Southern Entrance

We would like to remind parents and carers that the gate at the southern entrance will be locked at 08:23 each morning. Students arriving after this time should enter via the main entrance in Cricklefield Place.

Safeguarding The welfare and safety of our students is our priority. We do everything possible to ensure our students’ safety, both within the school community and outside of school, including working with relevant agencies to address any issues related to child protection. Students are informed of who they should go to should they have a concern about their own safety or the safety of others. At INA, all staff have regular safeguarding training to ensure that they are able to meet their statutory responsibilities. We also have a number of staff who are designated to respond to any child protection concerns and to liaise with social services: Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) Leanne Abbott-Jones Assistant Principal Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) Tam Broadway Primary Headteacher Sugra Alibhai Head of Sixth Form Designated Child Protection Officers Patrick Ball (Online safety) Pardeep Chaggar Jody Lapish Gareth Marshall-Jones

Dear Parent/Carer,

Re: Secondary School Day from September 2019 I would like to share with you a change to the secondary Academy day from September 2019. From September, the Academy day for secondary students will end at 3pm on Fridays. We have made this difficult decision in response to the need to set a balanced budget for 2019-20 in the context of very challenging financial pressures, an issue which is facing all schools nationally. This decision has been made in agreement with INA’s Chair of Governors and the Governing Body. It is part of a wider cost-saving exercise, including reducing the secondary Senior Leadership Team by one member. By making these changes, we have been able to retain smaller secondary class sizes and all of the essential elements of INA’s ethos and character, including BRIDGES, Big Band and Harkness teaching. Teacher loading will remain the same. To facilitate the reduction of taught periods by one, we are reducing the time allocated to design technology at KS3 by one period. Part of the rationale for reducing time allocated to the DT curriculum is the national shortage of DT teachers which means we have been unable to recruit high quality DT teachers for some time. Art and Design will continue to be taught for two periods a fortnight at Key Stage 3. We remain committed to providing a broad and balanced curriculum at INA with quality first teaching leading to outstanding outcomes. The time allocated to other subjects, including the core subjects and humanities is unchanged. In summary, from September all days will continue to start with line up at 8:25am. The secondary Academy day will end at 4pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and at 3pm on Tuesdays and Fridays. The library is available to students every day until 6pm. Students can also book the music practice rooms. In addition to this, a range of enrichments and some interventions will be on offer on Fridays between 3-4pm. A supervised quiet study room and supervised ICT rooms will also be available for students to complete their IL and pre-learning.

Sadiq Khan

“If you can’t be honest and candid with our best friend it’s not really our best friend.” - Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London The big story in the news last week was President Trump’s state visit to the UK. A state visit is when the Queen, activing on the advice of the government, formally invites a leader from another country. Some people have the view that President Trump was democratically elected by the people of the USA. With this in mind, and considering the UK and USA are close allies, they see the state visit as justified.

Students w

Other people think that President Trump should not have been invited. This is because they disagree with his views and policies, arguing they are discriminatory or divisive and go against our British Values. The situation raised questions about honesty. A big part of honesty is saying what you think and know is true, but doing so with good intentions and with respect. The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said that he respected the USA as a close ally and wanted good relations with the country. But he said a state visit may give the impression we accept the views of President Trump. Read on to find out more about honesty. It is vital we reflect on and grow this important disposition.

INA Attendance and Punctuality Regular attendance is a crucial factor in students’ educational development and success in achieving their full potential. Missing out on education and learning leaves students vulnerable to falling behind, putting them under unnecessary pressure. At Isaac Newton Academy every student is expected to maintain 100% attendance.

Punctuality All students need to be present on site and ready for line up no later than 8.25am each day and as such we advise students to be through the school gates (side entrance and southern entrance) no later than 8.23am.

Reporting of child’s absence In line with INA attendance policy it is the parent/ carer's responsibility to phone the school by 8.15am on each day of an absence. If you fail to contact the school to inform us of your child’s absence we may take the necessary steps to ensure your child is safe. Please take the time to familiarise yourself with the INA Attendance policy.

Absences immediately before or after a school holiday If your child is absent before or after a school holiday we must see evidence for the absence. This may be medical evidence if your child is unwell, or evidence of flight delays or circumstances beyond your control. We cannot authorise any absences before or after a holiday without this evidence and you risk being issued with a penalty notice.
