Southern Entrance

We would like to remind parents and carers that the gate at the southern entrance will be locked at 08:23 each morning. Students arriving after this time should enter via the main entrance in Cricklefield Place.

Safeguarding The welfare and safety of our students is our priority. We do everything possible to ensure our students’ safety, both within the school community and outside of school, including working with relevant agencies to address any issues related to child protection. Students are informed of who they should go to should they have a concern about their own safety or the safety of others. At INA, all staff have regular safeguarding training to ensure that they are able to meet their statutory responsibilities. We also have a number of staff who are designated to respond to any child protection concerns and to liaise with social services: Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) Leanne Abbott-Jones Assistant Principal Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) Tam Broadway Primary Headteacher Sugra Alibhai Head of Sixth Form Designated Child Protection Officers Patrick Ball (Online safety) Pardeep Chaggar Jody Lapish Gareth Marshall-Jones

You can find the INA Safeguarding policy, Child Protection policy and other related policies and procedures on the Academy’s website.

Dear Parents and Carers, Students in Years 7 to 10 are currently receiving feedback on their summer exams. It’s really important that they use the feedback provided by their teachers to gain a clear understanding of the gaps in their knowledge and the questions/question types that they find the most challenging. From this, students will gain a clear picture of the topic areas they most need to revise and work on further. We recommend that students devise an independent study/revision programme over the summer. This is important for all year groups but absolutely vital for Year 10s who need to consolidate their learning from Year 10, delve deeper into some topics they have studied and complete pre-learning in preparation for Year 11. We will be supporting this by providing plenty of high-quality summer IL. I will provide more details of this next week. This week the Year 10s are out on Work Experience in a wide range of professions and businesses across London. From our visits to them and from talking to employers who have generously offered them placements, it is good to hear that they are being challenged and inspired and that their BRIDGES dispositions are being put to the test. Meanwhile on Tuesday we welcomed back our Year 11s and their peers from across schools in Redbridge for their KS5 Transition Day. They experienced life on the top floor, ate in the Terrace Café, took part in sample lessons and engaged in some team building activities. It was a great day and we’re very much looking forward to enrolling them into the sixth form on 22nd August. exam results day. On Wednesday, Team PE organised and ran KS3 Sports Day. We were blessed with sunny weather and a great time was had by all. Many thanks go to Mr Beattie and Team PE for organising the events, to staff for supporting and to parents and family members for coming along to cheer the children on. And finally, please remember to complete the parent questionnaire. The deadline is Friday 12th July.

With all best wishes,

At the assemblies we will be presenting awards in recognition of students’ academic progress and attainment, personal progress and the development of their BRIDGES dispositions. Excellent attendance and punctuality will also be celebrated. We believe that it is important that every student is represented by a parent at the Awards assembly for their year group. Tickets will be distributed in the lead up to the awards assemblies. Due to limited capacity, we are unable to accommodate very many additional family members. However, if you would like additional places, please notify the school office and we will do our best to allocate an additional ticket. I look forward to seeing you during these special celebrations. TOP TIPS: Students

Josephine Baker [1906–1975]

8

Josephine Baker was an American-born French entertainer, activist, and French Resistance agent. Throughout her career Baker transferred knowledge and skills from one area of performance to another, thus creating a truly unique style. Her dancing was rooted in popular Jazz Age dancing like the Charleston. However, she used her understanding of different dances (such as of ballet, tap and African dance styles) to create a unique blend. In addition to this, Baker was renowned for incorporating comedy and singing into her performance to create a style truly unique. This was only possible as she learnt to apply skills and knowledge from one performance area across to another. Baker also made a stance against injustice, refusing to perform for segregated audiences (when an audience is separated based on race) in the United States. Furthermore, during World War 2 she supported the Resistance Movement to fight against the Nazi occupation of France. She smuggled messages in sheet music, housed refugees in her own home, performed in hospitals for the wounded and gathered information for the French intelligence services. Secondary Newsletter

Praise and Recognition At INA, we aim to provide a stimulating, challenging and rewarding learning environment which supports learning, celebrates achievement and encourages everyone. Awarding merits, informal praise in class and the end of term awards assemblies are all part of this. Please speak to your child/children on a regular basis to see how many merits they have and how they are working towards the different awards at school.

Merits The inter-form merit competition is heating up – with more and more merits being given out each week. Each merit you gain will increase your individual total and also your form’s overall total. So make sure you are keeping up the fantastic work to gain merits! Also if you are owed a merit go and collect it and make sure it gets recorded on your form’s spreadsheet! YEAR 7

INA Attendance and Punctuality Regular attendance is a crucial factor in students’ educational development and success in achieving their full potential. Missing out on education and learning leaves students vulnerable to falling behind, putting them under unnecessary pressure. At Isaac Newton Academy every student is expected to maintain 100% attendance.

Punctuality All students need to be present on site and ready for line up no later than 8.25am each day and as such we advise students to be through the school gates (side entrance and southern entrance) no later than 8.23am.

Reporting of child’s absence In line with INA attendance policy it is the parent/ carer's responsibility to phone the school by 8.15am on each day of an absence. If you fail to contact the school to inform us of your child’s absence we may take the necessary steps to ensure your child is safe. Please take the time to familiarise yourself with the INA Attendance policy.

Absences immediately before or after a school holiday If your child is absent before or after a school holiday we must see evidence for the absence. This may be medical evidence if your child is unwell, or evidence of flight delays or circumstances beyond your control. We cannot authorise any absences before or after a holiday without this evidence and you risk being issued with a penalty notice. 5 July 2019
