Southern Entrance
We would like to remind parents and carers that the gate at the southern entrance will be locked at 08:23 each morning. Students arriving after this time should enter via the main entrance in Cricklefield Place.
Safeguarding
The welfare and safety of our students is our priority. We do everything possible to ensure our students’ safety, both within the school community and outside of school, including working with relevant agencies to address any issues related to child protection. Students are informed of who they should go to should they have a concern about their own safety or the safety of others. At INA, all staff have regular safeguarding training to ensure that they are able to meet their statutory responsibilities. We also have a number of staff who are designated to respond to any child protection concerns and to liaise with social services:
Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) Jo Spencer Vice Principal Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) Tam Broadway Primary Headteacher Eleanor Seale Office Manager Designated Child Protection Officers Leanne Abbott-Jones Assistant Principal Gareth Marshall-Jones Primary Deputy Headteacher Patrick Ball Pastoral Leader
You can find the INA Safeguarding policy, Child Protection policy and other related policies and procedures on the Academy’s website.

Dear Parents and Carers, This week we welcomed the Year 6 children who will be joining INA in September and their families to the school for a transition evening. We had nearly seven applications for every Year 7 space this year, making INA one of the most oversubscribed schools in the country. Already there is a new Year 7 waiting list of over 300 names! The school’s popularity is, I know, a result of all the fantastic dedication and hard work of our staff and the great role modelling of our students, so thanks go to all of them! The GCSE exams continue to progress well and I should like to commend the students in Years 7-10 for their support and understanding in moving around the building quietly when exams are in progress. Earlier in the week the Physics paper proved to be a tough one and I know that students up and down the country will have left the exam hall feeling that some of the questions were impossibly hard. However this is where our BRIDGES programme is so important, as it has taught the Year 11s what to do when they don’t know what to do. I am confident that they will have used skills of resilience and determination to tackle even the most tricky and unorthodox questions. As you know, there are no lesson in the secondary school on Monday 5th June as it is an Independent Learning Day. Students will come in only if they have an exam (further details are included later in the newsletter). And finally, I wish you all a great half term break and a much needed rest before our final half term of the year. With all best wishes,
Rachel Macfarlane 26 May 2017

On Saturday 20th May 2017 Dawud Bukhari 7C and Musa Bukhari 9N competed in the London Open Judo Championships, where the standard is such that the top clubs from around the country were there in force. Musa started doing Judo just under two years ago, as an enrichment. His commitment to the sport led him to join the Heart of Oak Judo Club and soon after his brother Dawud also joined. His sisters were not going to be left out, so Khadijah and Ramaysa have also joined. Their developments over the last 18 months have been amazing. Musa lacked confidence at the start of his learning but the wonderful thing about him is that he has the courage and willingness to try. As a result he has been making technical improvements both in terms of his skill set and strategies. To watch Musa perform of Saturday was a pleasure because his development has been outstanding for such a short period of time. Well done to him. Dawud aka Diplomat (running joke with him and the other members)on Saturday was paid a compliment by his Coach Marvin, who claimed he had the nine lives of a cat. He walked out to the arena nervous. He could see the calibre of fighters he was up against and feel their experience. He did extremely well. The next event for the boys will be London Youth Games at Crystal Palace on the 17th June. Ramadan and Summer Exams
We are aware that the INA internal summer exams and the public GCSE exams fall during Ramadan this year. We appreciate the benefits that observing Ramadan brings to individuals and communities and the obligation to fast under Islamic tradition when a child becomes an adult. We understand that the decision to fast is very personal. We are also aware that observing the fast and late-night prayers may lead to tiredness, low energy, dehydration, reduced focus, memory or concentration. Islamic law does offer the flexibility for a person to delay or exempt themselves from fasting and late-night prayers if they believe their performance in exams could be affected. If your son or daughter will be fasting during this period, you will need to write a letter to confirm it. Please send the letter for the attention of Mrs Chamberlain by Tuesday 6th June so that we have an accurate picture of numbers and are able to prepare food in appropriate quantities. Your son or daughter will be excused from lunch and will not be expected to go to the dining hall during Ramadan. Your Wisepay account will not be charged for school lunches if we receive written confirmation that your child is fasting. Our Prayer and Contemplation rooms are available during lunchtime for students who wish to pray. Please note that, during Ramadan, students are expected to participate fully in all lessons and enrichment activities as normal, including PE. If your son or daughter is in year 11, has a morning and afternoon exam, and wishes to stay for lunch, they can do so. Year 11 students will only be charged if they choose to have a school lunch.

Praise and Recognition
At INA, we aim to provide a stimulating, challenging and rewarding learning environment which supports learning, celebrates achievement and encourages everyone. Awarding merits, informal praise in class and the end of term awards assemblies are all part of this. Please speak to your child/children on a regular basis to see how many merits they have and how they are working towards the different awards on offer.
Merits
We are at the half way stage of this term’s inter-form merit race, and it is very tight so far. Well done to all the students who have achieved 25/50/100 merits so far this year. The totals below are how many merits your form has achieved in this term so far. So keep working hard so that you can achieve your personal bronze/silver/gold/platinum merit award, and also help your form climb up the merit league towards the top! YEAR 7

Optim “A winner is a dreamer who never gives up”
Nelson Mandela [1918-2013]
Nelson Mandela was
a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, politician, and philanthropist, who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the country’s first black head of state. Mandela was arrested for conspiring to overthrow the state and sentenced to life imprisonment. He served 27 years in prison in solitary confinement. He said “I am fundamentally an optimist. Part of being optimistic is keeping one’s head pointed toward the sun, one’s feet moving forward. There were many dark moments when my faith in humanity was sorely tested, but I would not and could not give myself up to despair.” During his incarceration, Mandela remained positive and optimistic. Despite poor food, inadequate clothing and heavy labour, he remained unbroken. ‘The challenge for every political prisoner is how to survive prison intact, how to emerge from prison undiminished, how to conserve and even replenish one’s beliefs.’ Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.
Optimism Having a positive and hopeful outlook to life and learning
Behaviours Adopting a ‘glass half full’ attitude towards your learning, always looking on the bright side even when things don’t go as planned, always looking for the best outcome and taking something positive from every learning situation.

• Talk to your son/daughter about a time you experienced a loss, setback, or hardship and were able to find a silver lining of some sort. Talk about what you did to bounce back from it. • Share with your son/daughter an optimistic picture of your day/week and what you learned from your experiences. • Use optimistic and growth mindset language with your son/daughter. • Complete an ‘Optimist’s Diary’ with your son/ daughter at the end of each day
• Before each exam, visualise yourself getting the great results that you are aiming for.
