Year 11 Study Leave - Summer 2018 The exam season starts on Monday 14th May and ends on Friday 15th June. Half term is 28th May – 1st June. Normal lessons for all students will continue until and including Friday 11th May. From Monday 14th May until Friday 25th May all Year 11 students will be in school all day and expected to attend their normal lessons if they are not in a GCSE exam. This will include pm lessons where they have an am exam, am lessons where they have a pm exam and lessons between am and pm exams, where applicable. Morning exams Each morning exam session will start at 8am. A 30 minute revision session (usually based in the dining hall) will occur from 8-8:30. At 8.30am a free breakfast will be provided for all Year 11 students taking the GCSE that morning. Afternoon exams Each afternoon exam session will start at 1pm (following KS4 lunch). A 30 minute revision session (usually based in the KS4 hall) will occur from 1-1:30. If a student has a lesson between a morning and afternoon exam, he/she should go to the lesson but the teacher will allow him/her to study for his/her afternoon exam rather than take part in the lesson. Teachers will continue with their Year 11 lessons right up until the final exam for that subject has been taken. Once the final exam has taken place, the student coming to the lesson will be allowed to get on with independent study for upcoming exams. The teacher will supervise and ensure that there is an atmosphere conducive to private study. From Monday 4th June, there will be study leave for Year 11 students. There will be a programme of revision lessons offered in the subjects where exams have not finished. Students will be expected to attend revision sessions that apply to them (although for some students who are good at revising independently these sessions will be optional and for others an invite will be issued and they will be required to attend.) There will be signing up arrangements so that staff know who they are expecting in advance of the session. Students will sign in and out at reception. At times when they do not have a revision lesson or an exam they will be expected to leave site to go home to revise. The last exam is on Friday 15th June. We are planning to hold a pm Year 11 assembly on that day. Mr Crowther-Green, Assistant Principal

Prefect trip to Mulberry Youth Conference The Isaac Newton Academy Prefect Team recently attended the Mulberry Youth Conference 2018. The conference brings students together from a range of backgrounds to explore issues of common concern, including equality, social justice and cultural identity, showing that young people have the power to make a difference in their communities and on the world stage. Through bringing schools together from across the UK, the aim is to consider the means of young people becoming active in their communities. Students are given the opportunity to take the floor to share their points of view on the topics raised. We were very proud that Jainna Bhalla (10A) gave an inspiring speech on the refugee crisis. This was a very proud moment for Jainna and all of INA. The Prefects are now in the process of visiting form classes across the school to share their learning from the day. Lima Uddin (10T) has reflected on the day: “The Mulberry Youth Conference was an invaluable experience which I really enjoyed overall. My favourite part of the day was listening to what the panellists do and their experiences. Some of their stories were quite inspirational, for example supporting refugees or fighting racism in the UK through spoken word. As well as that, the workshops we took part in were useful as they allowed everyone to voice their opinions on certain matters. So overall, it was a very enjoyable trip and experience. ”

Awarding merits, informal praise in class and the end of term awards assemblies are all part of this. Please speak to your child/children on a regular basis to see how many merits they have and how they are working towards the different awards at school.

Sports Report ISAAC NEWTON ACADEMY YEAR 11 BADMINTON TEAM THE BEST IN LONDON! London Youth Games Finals INA progressed through the borough championships just before Christmas, to then go to the London Youth Games, where the best of all the boroughs competed to reach the last eight. On Tuesday 20th March, INA went to the London Youth Games to battle it out against the best eight boroughs in London. The team were fully aware of the competition and challenges that faced them but supported, communicated and congratulated each other through every single point, won or lost. In our group we played against Hounslow, Brent and Waltham Forest. We progressed through each of these games, winning the games 4-1. We came through victorious in our group stage and that put us into the semifinals against a school called Wilsons. This school had previously knocked us out at the same stage two years ago (at the KS3 event), so we knew it would be a tough game. The team played out of their skin and we won the game 4-1. This put us through to the final against Coopers Company from Havering. This school had qualified for the finals in both KS3 male and female, and KS4 male and female and had their KS3 boys in the final on the other court. With the final being played over two courts and with a big crowd gathering, the boys had one final team talk and were ready to go.

With the first 3 matches INA were 2-1 up which left us with 2 doubles games on both courts at the same time to decide the winner. We needed to win at least one game; they had to win both. Esher and Ekonkar were trailing 6-1 at the start of the game and Akhil and Neel were also behind by two at the mid-point of the game. Both games were extremely close and a great watch for the neutral (not Mr Healey!). With matches up to 15, Esher & Ekonkar had pulled it back to 12-12 after being 6-1 down, but Akhil and Neel had lost 15-13 leaving everything riding on Esher & Ekonka. Esher and Ekonkar came from 6-1 down to win the game 15-13 and the team were delighted, shocked and ecstatic about their victory. None of them wanted to be named or shown but here goes‌

Spring Celebration next week! The Spring Celebration will take place on Wednesday 28th March at 6:30pm. It promises to be a fantastic festival of music making, with over 300 students from Year 1 up to Year 12 performing pieces they have been rehearsing this term. The students have worked incredibly hard and the standard promises to be higher than ever! There will be music from all over the world, sung and played on different instruments. We also have an exciting cameo in store for you.

Tickets for the event will be £1 for adults and 50p for children under 18. Tickets will be available at Secondary KS3 Reception and at Primary Reception. Performers will have first priority and tickets will go on sale for the whole school community from Monday 26th March. Please contact the school with any queries around costs of tickets and potential group discounts at info@isaacnewtonacademy.org.

Spring

The performance will run until approximately 8:30pm, although owing to the unpredictable nature of a large-scale event like this I’m sure you will understand that this time isBACKGROUND only an estimation! If your child is performing, they should wear all black with a splash of red. We really hope you are looking forward to this event and can make the time to come and support our students.

Year 10-12, The Oxford Scientist Schools Writing Competition Deadline 27th April 2018 Calling all budding science writers in UK schools!

Are you currently a school, sixth form or college student in the UK in Year 10, Year 11 or Year 12 (or equivalent)? Are you fascinated by science and want to communicate it to those around you? Would you like to see your work published in the next issue of The Oxford Scientist AND win a £50 Amazon voucher? If you answered YES to all of the above, then all you need to do is write a 700-word article about a “scientific discovery” of your choice by 27th April 2018. There are no right or wrong topic choices, so your article could discuss anything from early scientific discoveries such as Darwin’s theory of evolution, to more recent scientific discoveries such as the observation of gravitational waves. Once you have written your article, you can upload it on our website at www.oxsci.org/schools/ Articles must be submitted by 27th April 2018. Articles will be judged by our panel of experts, and the winning article will be published in the next issue of The Oxford Scientist. The winning entrant will also receive a £50 Amazon voucher, sponsored by Oxford Sparks. The runners-up will have their articles featured on our website. If you have any questions about the competition, please email competition@oxsci.org.
