Southern Entrance

We would like to remind parents and carers that the gate at the southern entrance will be locked at 08:23 each morning. Students arriving after this time should enter via the main entrance in Cricklefield Place.

Safeguarding The welfare and safety of our students is our priority. We do everything possible to ensure our students’ safety, both within the school community and outside of school, including working with relevant agencies to address any issues related to child protection. Students are informed of who they should go to should they have a concern about their own safety or the safety of others. At INA, all staff have regular safeguarding training to ensure that they are able to meet their statutory responsibilities. We also have a number of staff who are designated to respond to any child protection concerns and to liaise with social services: Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) Leanne Abbott-Jones Assistant Principal Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) Tam Broadway Primary Headteacher Sugra Alibhai Head of Sixth Form Designated Child Protection Officers Gabriel Ayerh Patrick Ball (Online safety) Pardeep Chaggar Jody Lapish Gareth Marshall-Jones

You can find the INA Safeguarding policy, Child Protection policy and other related policies and procedures on the Academy’s website.

Dear Parents and Carers, On Thursday last week the BBC Concert Orchestra & the Guy Barker Big Band came to INA for the day to rehearse for their live show on Friday at the Cheltenham Festival. Seventy musicians arrived, along with their instruments, to do a full day’s rehearsal in the Key Stage 3 hall. Our GCSE and A level music students were really fortunate to be able to go in to watch the musicians rehearse. It was a real privilege and great learning experience for them to see a professional music rehearsal.

The first written GCSE examinations start on Monday next week. We know how hard the Year 11 students have been working in preparation for these important exams and we wish them every success. Monday 4th June is the last Independent Learning Day of the academic year. All secondary students will be expected to use the day to revise at home for their forthcoming exams, except for those who are required to come in for an examination on that day. Further details can be found later in the newsletter. With all best wishes,

Jo Spencer 11 May 2018

We are pleased to welcome the following new staff to Isaac Newton Academy Ade Barber Pastoral Leader Year 7 I am really excited to have joined a great team at Isaac Newton Academy as the Pastoral Leader for Year 7. My parents used to live in Ilford many years ago, and my family is originally from the East End of London, so I feel at home already, and lucky to have the opportunity to give something back to the local community. I was drawn to INA because of its strong sense of BRIDGES values and the focus on taking time to develop the personal, emotional and social skills that young people need, in order to succeed in today’s fast-paced and technological society. I believe strongly in ensuring that every student in the school is supported in their journey to adulthood, and becomes a caring, responsible and confident young adult, who will leave INA with a determination to achieve his or her goals in life, seize the opportunities that education provides, and be a responsible local and global citizen. I grew up in south Essex, not far down the river, where my family are still based. I have always had a passion for literature and this led me to study my English degree at the University of Leeds, before moving on to Glasgow to train to become a teacher. I have always had a passion for education and travel, and have spent the last 20 years combining the two – working overseas in international schools in Colombia and Thailand, where I was Pastoral Leader for Years 8 to 10, and also carrying out volunteer teaching in the Solomon Islands for the charity VSO. London has always felt like home, and I have also previously taught in Camberwell, Bethnal Green and Eltham, where I worked for the past few years. I am looking forward to working closely with students, parents and the wider community to ensure that the students at INA feel happy, supported and empowered to achieve whatever goals they may set themselves in life.

Ramadan and Summer Exams We are aware that the public GCSE exams fall during Ramadan this year as they did last year. Subsequent year groups’ GCSE exams will also be affected. The INA internal summer exam season will also fall during Ramadan. We appreciate the benefits that observing Ramadan brings to individuals and communities and the obligation to fast under Islamic tradition when a child becomes an adult. We understand that the decision to fast is very personal. We are also aware that observing the fast and late-night prayers may lead to tiredness, low energy, dehydration, reduced focus, memory or concentration. Islamic law does offer the flexibility for a person to delay or exempt themselves from fasting and late-night prayers if they believe their performance in exams could be affected. We would advise students that it is important not to spend all night praying during the exam period to avoid tiredness. If your son/daughter will be fasting during this period, you will need to write a letter to confirm it. Please send the letter for the attention of Ms Chamberlain by Monday 14th May so that we have an accurate picture of numbers and are able to prepare food in appropriate quantities. Your son/daughter will be excused from lunch and will not be expected to go to the dining hall during Ramadan. Your Wisepay account will not be charged for school lunches if we receive written confirmation that your child is fasting. Our Prayer and Contemplation rooms are available during lunchtime for students who wish to pray. Please note that, during Ramadan, students are expected to participate fully in all lessons and enrichment activities as normal, including PE. Mr Ball Acting Assistant Principal

Attendance and Punctuality At Isaac Newton Academy every student is expected to maintain 100% attendance. Each form group across each year are competing to ensure they are top of the attendance league table for their year. Please ensure your child catches up with missed learning. Our pastoral and teaching staff are working hard to ensure students are taking responsibility for going to collect missed learning from their classroom teachers. Punctuality All students need to be present on site and ready for line up no later than 8.25am each day and as such we advise students to be through the school gates (side entrance and southern entrance) no later than 8.20am. The form with the highest attendance at the end of every term is awarded the attendance trophy. Each week we will update you with the year to date attendance figures as seen below. We apologise for the recent problems you have been experiencing with Wisepay following a change in our Management Information System. We have been working hard to rectify this with Wisepay and they have now confirmed that they are now able to update the information required. However, this will involve your child’s school meal history being deleted from the system. They have been instructed to do this on Monday 14th May so if you want to review any history, please do so before this date. We have been reassured that any top ups and balances will be retained. If, however, you have any concerns following the update, please e-mail us at info@isaacnewtonacademy.org Many thanks for your patience. Ms Chamberlain

Physical Education during Ramadan Since Isaac Newton Academy opened it has been an expectation that students continue to participate in P.E. throughout Ramadan despite fasting. In years gone by, it has been great to see students who have continued to show high levels of effort during this period. This expectation will continue during the coming weeks. In instances where possible, P.E. teachers will adapt learning in order to be sympathetic to these conditions but this cannot be done at all times. Thank you, Team P.E. 11 May 2018

INA Sixth Form Students In the summer INA celebrated our first GCSE results. The results were so strong that we were ranked amongst the very top schools in the entire country – a huge achievement! The students above are celebrating on the day that they received their results. Of course, their success is a result of lots of different factors. However, one key reason they were so successful is because of the revising and practising they developed throughout Year 7 to Year 11.

TOP TIPS: Students

• Plan time to revise and practice before assessments and performances. • When revising, make sure you are clear on what you need to know for each subject. • Create a revision timetable so you know what you have to revise and when. • Use your techniques from the revision sessions you have completed. • Meet INA’s expectations of time spent on I/L, reading and your musical instrument. • Use the music practice rooms, ICT room and library at lunchtime and after school.

Parents

• If you know that your son/daughter has a test or exam coming up, ensure that they have a quiet place to revise and support their learning by testing them. • Listen to your son/daughter playing his/her instrument, reading aloud or watch them practising a sports technique. • Talk to your child about what makes effective practice. • Support your child in a healthy revision schedule which includes scheduled breaks and healthy food

Elanah is revising for her GCSEs and, like all of the Year 11s, is doing a great job. As part of her geography revision Elanah has made some condensed notes for each topic that she has covered. These notes are formatted in a very visual and creative way so they are memorable.

Sakinah and Eashar played key parts in the school production of Bugsy Malone. As lead characters, they had to put in countless hours of practice to learn their lines. This was very demanding but it was well worth it, as the production was such a success. Great example of practise in action.

INA BRIDGES 11

Year 11 Study Leave - Summer 2018 The exam season starts on Monday 14th May and ends on Friday 15th June. Half term is 28th May – 1st June. Normal lessons for all students will continue until and including Friday 11th May. From Monday 14th May until Friday 25th May all Year 11 students will be in school all day and expected to attend their normal lessons if they are not in a GCSE exam. This will include pm lessons where they have an am exam, am lessons where they have a pm exam and lessons between am and pm exams, where applicable. Morning exams Each morning exam session will start at 8am. A 30 minute revision session (usually based in the dining hall) will occur from 8-8:30. At 8.30am a free breakfast will be provided for all Year 11 students taking the GCSE that morning. Afternoon exams Each afternoon exam session will start at 1pm (following KS4 lunch). A 30 minute revision session (usually based in the KS4 hall) will occur from 1-1:30. If a student has a lesson between a morning and afternoon exam, he/she should go to the lesson but the teacher will allow him/her to study for his/her afternoon exam rather than take part in the lesson. Teachers will continue with their Year 11 lessons right up until the final exam for that subject has been taken. Once the final exam has taken place, the student coming to the lesson will be allowed to get on with independent study for upcoming exams. The teacher will supervise and ensure that there is an atmosphere conducive to private study. From Monday 4th June, there will be study leave for Year 11 students. There will be a programme of revision lessons offered in the subjects where exams have not finished. Students will be expected to attend revision sessions that apply to them (although for some students who are good at revising independently these sessions will be optional and for others an invite will be issued and they will be required to attend.) There will be signing up arrangements so that staff know who they are expecting in advance of the session. Students will sign in and out at reception. At times when they do not have a revision lesson or an exam they will be expected to leave site to go home to revise. The last exam is on Friday 15th June. We are planning to hold a pm Year 11 assembly on that day. Mr Crowther-Green, Assistant Principal

Big Band

residential weekend Fifty-three Isaac Newton Academy musicians attended the 'PGL Big Band' residential weekend May 4-6 in Swindon. Morning rehearsals covered the music and choreography of Michael Jackson’s song “Thriller”. Afternoon sessions included outdoor activities such as zip wire, vertical challenge, Aeroball and trapeze. Students and staff really enjoyed building upon some BRIDGES dispositions including courage, concentration, collaboration and understanding. The PGL facilities were excellent and everyone enjoyed making music together. Many thanks to the students for all of their efforts and to the staff, Mr Coughlin, Ms Morten, Mr Chapman, Ms Epler and Mr Beasley, for making the weekend possible.

Praise and Recognition

At INA, we aim to provide a stimulating, challenging and rewarding learning environment which supports learning, celebrates achievement and encourages everyone. Awarding merits, informal praise in class and the end of term awards assemblies are all part of this. Please speak to your child/children on a regular basis to see how many merits they have and how they are working towards the different awards at school.

Merits Each merit you gain will increase your individual total and also your form’s overall total. So make sure you are keeping up the fantastic work to gain merits!
