Dear Parents and Carers, I hope that you enjoyed a good break over half term. We have had a busy week with internal exams for Years 7-10 and Year 12 starting and GCSE exams continuing. Students have conducted themselves really well and shown real focus and determination. I would like to advise you of the arrangements for the start of term in September which are as follows: Monday 3rd September Tuesday 4th September Wednesday 5th September Thursday 6th September
INSET INSET INSET Years 7 & 12 in from 8.25am
Friday 7th September
Years 8-11 & 13 in from 1.30pm All students in from 8.25am for the full day
Finally, many of our families will be celebrating Eid next week. In the event that Eid falls on Friday 15th June, a leave of absence will need to be completed (and submitted to the school in advance) by any parent who would like their child to be granted time off school for religious observation for part or all of this day. Year 11 students will need to attend school to sit their exams if they have GCSE Physics or Combined Science on Friday 15th. Please also note that internal exams are scheduled for Years 7 and 10 for Friday 15th June; these exams will go ahead regardless of when Eid falls and any student who misses an exam will take it on their return. I would like to end by wishing Eid Mubarak to all of our families who are celebrating Eid next week! With all best wishes,

Attendance and Punctuality At Isaac Newton Academy every student is expected to maintain 100% attendance. Each form group across each year are competing to ensure they are top of the attendance league table for their year. Please ensure your child catches up with missed learning. Our pastoral and teaching staff are working hard to ensure students are taking responsibility for going to collect missed learning from their classroom teachers. Punctuality All students need to be present on site and ready for line up no later than 8.25am each day and as such we advise students to be through the school gates (side entrance and southern entrance) no later than 8.20am. The form with the highest attendance at the end of every term is awarded the attendance trophy. Each week we will update you with the year to date attendance figures as seen below. Last term, the Humanities and English departments took 180 Year 7 students to the medieval town of Rochester, which is more than 800 years old. This was a chance for students to visit one of the best-known Norman cities in England. The annual trip, which is now in its sixth year, seems like a rite of passage for INA students. It has given students the opportunity to discover the magnificent cathedral and dominating castle up close. Students were able to walk in the footsteps of religious pilgrims and were able to explore the ruins of the castle and castle grounds. Students were given a creative writing task during the day which linked directly with the learning they are completing in their English lessons which is the Canterbury Tales. The students had to complete a diary entry which described their journey which they went on. This activity was led by the students’ Pastoral Leader, Mr Barber and the learning produced from the students was fantastic. Thank you to all the staff and parents for their support in making this a great trip for the students.

Student reviews We went to Rochester Castle and I was able to experience a medieval castle. It was cold and very tall. We also went to the cathedral which was also very old. We were set a task to find religious items which was very interesting. The cathedral building was very large. I enjoyed the trip! - Ruby Bird 7C The Rochester trip was very fun. We did lots of activities and we learnt lots of different facts about Rochester Castle such as the fact that pig fat was used to blown up the castle during Norman times. We climbed a very narrow staircase in the castle. It was very tiring, and it was hard to imagine how soldiers would run up these stairs. We went to the cathedral and I found the floor very uneven. My favourite part was the castle tour which was led by Mr Smith as we learnt interesting facts about King John. If I was to go back again I would spend more time in the castle. - Anon When I got to Rochester I was amazed by the sounds. I could hear the birds tweeting a melodious tune whilst we looked up at the towering castle. A cool fact that I learnt was that the castle was blown up by pig fat instead of gunpowder because pig fat was easy to access and highly flammable. We also went to an old-fashioned sweet shop to buy sweets which you would not find in a standard sweet shop. It was fascinating. - Zahra Sagir 7S Rochester is a beautiful and quiet town. It has a castle and a beautiful cathedral. Everyone was very excited on the coach and could not wait to see the area. When we arrived, we could smell the fresh air. We had lots of fun learning about intruders and how they tried to invade the castle. One example was the use of pig fat which is flammable. The cathedral had stunning architecture and was developed by the Normans. It was very interesting to hear the priest say prayers when the bell rang. I really enjoyed the trip and I hope I can go again with my family and friends. - Hishaam Mosehraf 7I 8 June 2018

Dandapani Hindu priest and meditation teacher, Dandapani is of Sri Lankan descent. Raised in Australia, he graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering. At the age of twenty-three, he chose to live as a monk. Thus he followed his guru, Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami to Kauai’s Hindu Monastery in Hawaii. After being initiated as a monk he studied a wide variety of Hindu teachings that focused on meditation, yoga and spiritual philosophy. Dandapani’s spiritual journey has led him to become a master of concentration. He has worked extremely hard to develop this disposition, and below are his 3 key pieces of advice:
• Try to clear you m requires a high le this technique so overcome a diffi • Try to avoid distr you find it difficu • Identify a task th extended period how you have yo • Learn a complex one you have jus • Close your eyes were meditating and forget about this technique so overcome a diffi

1. We need to learn how to concentration from a young age, this should be taught in schools. 2. We need to practise concentrating every single day. The best way to practise concentration is to simply do one thing at a time during the day, giving it all your attention no matter how simple it is. 3. Smartphones are a wonderful and powerful addition to our life, but we need to take back control and use willpower to decide what information we really need and choose to engage with. 10 Secondary Newsletter

Studying art develops a huge range of creative and practical dispositions, including concentration. The current Year 11 GCSE Art students demonstrated immense levels of concentration as they produced beautiful works of art over their two-day examination period. They are an inspiration to us all.

Praise and Recognition
At INA, we aim to provide a stimulating, challenging and rewarding learning environment which supports learning, celebrates achievement and encourages everyone. Awarding merits, informal praise in class and the end of term awards assemblies are all part of this. Please speak to your child/children on a regular basis to see how many merits they have and how they are working towards the different awards at school.
Merits Each merit you gain will increase your individual total and also your form’s overall total. So make sure you are keeping up the fantastic work to gain merits!

Ahmed Al-Khafaji Award
(Peer Commendation Award)
Ahmed was well known for being kind, for helping others and for being extremely polite. He was also someone known for his hard work and absorption; the idea, therefore, is that the winner should be someone who encapsulated one of these qualities in that week. Year 7: Aidah Al Madiha 7C Year 8: Sahil Vohra 8A Year 9: Jannat Ibrahim 9W Year 10: Jaskaran Singh 10S
Good Deed Feed Every week we ask teachers to nominate students who have been role models by carrying out good deeds for others and the INA community. A big well done for those who have been nominated this week! Eleanor Brant 9N for handing in a student’s lost lanyard – great citizenship, thank you! - Ms Lapish Dominikas Krisnickas 7A for helping up a Year 7 student who had fallen over and providing support to help him to medical. He didn’t pause for a moment before rushing over to help. Well done Dominikas! - Mr Barber Theresa Nassar 8A and Aatika Nawaz 8C for being very helpful in Humanities lessons - volunteering their time to help others that are struggling with activities and for helping to tidy up and return resources at the end of the lesson.
