The Union budget for 2022-23 places a strong emphasis on infrastructure and building. The government's policies on roads and highways, as well as affordable housing, provide a significant and much-needed boost to the construction industry. In the Union Budget 2022-23, the Union Government emphasised the importance of infrastructure development. Under PM Gati Shakti's leadership, the National Highways will be expanded by 25,000 kilometres over the following year. To increase connectivity, the government aims to implement the National Ropeway Programme under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP). The government is encouraging the construction and infrastructure businesses in a variety of ways, including through new funds. The construction equipment industry will be directly impacted by the construction sector's push. The construction equipment sector in India is large and diverse, including both foreign and native firms. The proposed 'Parvatmala' scheme in the Union Budget has the potential to be a game changer. Eight ropeway projects totaling 60 kilometres will be built in hill states in the coming fiscal year. The initiative intends to strengthen modern forms of mobility in the highlands while also giving border villages in remote locations a boost. We hope that this budget would assist the construction and infrastructure industries in covering losses caused by COVID-19 in many areas. Budget 2022 is a well-maintained budget that addresses every area of the Indian economy, with a particular focus on roads and highways. Mining Equipment, Crusher Equipment, Road & Highways, Lubricants, and other topics are covered in this issue of Construction Mirror. In addition, our team has gathered the opinions of key industry professionals on the Union Budget for 2022-23.

Budget Quotes

Quotes on budget 2022-23 Mr. Sandeep Mathur Brand Leader, CASE New Holland Construction Equipment Pvt. Ltd “The Union Budget has brought the focus back on Bharat. Building further on India’s infrastructure requirements will have a tremendous effect on achieving sustainable growth for the economy and will have an exceptional positive social impact. The transformative approach for economic growth in the infrastructure sector driven by seven engines – roads, railways, airports, ports, mass transport, waterways and logistics infrastructure – is a smart move with an eye towards achieving long-term goals. The announcement regarding aligning National Infrastructure Pipeline with Gati Shakti Master Plan will certainly give an edge to the Indian economy, encouraging smooth and seamless urban development in the nation. Additionally, the government’s continuous investment in expanding the national Highway network by 25,000 km in 2022-23 by mobilizing INR 20,000 crore will also be enormously beneficial for the infrastructure sector.” CM

Mr. KE Ranganathan MD, Roca Bathroom Products Private Limited “The budget 2022 lays foundation for the next 25 years of sustainable growth and a right step towards making India ‘Aatmanirbhar’. The government’s continued impetus on urban planning, housing and overall infrastructure development will have a multiplier effect while putting emphasis on more job creation and inclusive growth. The allocation of ₹ 48,000 crore under PM Awas Yojana for developing 80 lakh houses in both rural and urban areas, availability of affordable housing for the middle-class and economically weaker sections and dedicating Centers of excellence for urban planning will form the bedrock of improving the standard of living of the people and address the demand and supply gap in the housing sector. The increase in capital expenditure will spur the demand for services and manufactured inputs by large enterprises and MSMEs, enabling speedy economic recovery and eventually result in increased disposable income. We are also looking forward to the unfolding of the PM Gatishakti framework as it will increase the supply-chain efficiency and reduce the logistics cost. Furthermore, the “Har Ghar, Nal Se Jal” has proved to be a major success in the last two years and a further push to the same is going to play a major role in the betterment of rural and semi-urban communities and will aid drinking and sanitation needs. In conclusion, an increased impetus on production linked incentive schemes, creation of jobs, digitization of the economy, modern infrastructure and most importantly a budget promoting inclusive development of all communities is going to help India move towards a futuristic growth path.” CM 8

Budget Quotes

Quotes on budget Mr. Deepak Garg Managing Director, Sany India & South Asia The major highlight of the announcements made in the budget for us is the Big infra spending boost of Rs. 7.5 Lac Crores in financial year 2022 - 23. Provision for Rs. 1 lac crores - 50 year interest free loans to state government over and above the current limit will surely put more money in the hands of the state government to increase spending on infrastructure development. Green bonds announced in the budget session also look very promising in order to reduce the carbon intensity of our economy.

Increasing impetus given on the 7 engines of growth in the Pradhan Mantri Gaati Shakti program shows the government’s commitment towards rapid 360 degree growth in the overall infrastructure sector. Some key measures announced in the budget are a definitive step towards this goal. Expanding highways by 25000KMS, which is nearly 83 kms a day, will prove to be a major growth booster for our economy. Similarly, Multi modal logistics facilities were previously not given the due attention it needed but thankfully today’s budget seems to have changed this trend with the announcement of construction of 100 cargo terminals in the next 3 years. With the allocation of Rs. 48000 crores for the Pradhan Mantri Aavas Yojana, we are hopeful that the Government's commitment towards providing affordable housing will soon turn into a reality. Besides housing, drinking water is an essential need for everyone and allocation of Rs. 60000 crores towards drinking water projects will not only benefit the common man but positively impact the infrastructure sector and pipeline industries as well. Other significant announcements like Modern Infra for India at 100 with multi modal approach, Energy Transition, climate action to fuel sustainable development etc. indicates that this year’s budget is dedicated to infrastructure development and is forward looking in every sense of the word. CM

Mr Lalit Beriwala Director, Shyam Steel Industries Ltd.

India’s micro, small and medium enterprises is second in number only to China. MSMEs are integral to our economy contributing 30% to the country’s GDP, 50% to the export and employment generation of over 100 million, next only to the Agri sector. Their contribution towards delivering social justice for containing regional disparities and equitable economic growth are no less important factors for the Government to take note of. Improved performance of MSME sector is vital for achieving global benchmark efficiency and quality of products being manufactured in India, as it supplies goods and services to big industrial enterprises. The Government, therefore, should invest in providing backend services to improve performance of MSMEs. Lack of technology-based production and low investment in research and development are bottlenecks for the sector to become globally competent. Government could subsidise internationally available technology for adoption by MSME players to improve their product quality, utilizing their existing resources. Hand holding by designated academic institutes of repute in the same geographical territory for product innovation can also support their cause. For a more equitable distribution of national resources, policy support to MSMEs also can help unleash their potential. For example, if the Government decide to roll out PLI schemes exclusively meant for MSMEs, it can provide them with a coverage against fierce competition with the bigger business houses to stake claims on incentives for improved performance. Growth of Indian steel industry has been driven by domestic availability of raw materials such as iron ore and coal. Consequently, steel sector has been a major contributor to India’s manufacturing output. For MSMEs to play a bigger role, Government may consider allocation of smaller mines of Iron Ore and Coal through the e-auction process amongst MSMEs alone, which will protect them from the competition with the bigger businesses. MSME sector, therefore, look forward to an enabling ecosystem provided by the Government in the manufacturing and steel industry domain, with budgetary and policy support, to emerge as an equal partner in making India self-reliant and transcending it to a $5tn economy. Budget Quotes

Quotes on budget Mr. Rajan Aiyer, Vice President and Managing Director, Trimble, South Asia Region “This year’s budget has opened wide opportunities for the infrastructure and construction industry, with a clear focus on building a modern and world-class infrastructure for India. We welcome the significantly increased allocation to infrastructure capex compared to last year, while the measures to speed up approvals for low cost housing projects and additional allocation to the PM Awas Yojna will together go a long way in delivering housing for all. Finally, we are glad that the government is looking to align the National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP) with the PM GatiShakti framework, with the larger goal of economic transformation through improved pan-country logistic efficiency. CM

Mr. Anil G Verma Executive Director and President, Godrej & Boyce “With the growing demand for housing and development, we are happy with the increased attention and budget allocated towards overall infrastructure of the country by the Honorable finance minister in her budget speech today. Additional public investment for modern infrastructure, be it roadways or housing development, is a big step in the right direction to creating a better and sustainable India. The increased investment also indicates that the government is actively looking for ways to improve the overall living conditions of people in the country and generate more employment opportunities in the process. Focused investment to create proper water supply channels and housing solutions will overall help in the sustainable development. We are looking forward to the implementation of PM Gati Shakti and the overall impact that this initiative will have. We are optimistic about governments focus to create provisions for improving water supply in rural areas that will aid drinking and domestic needs. ‘Har Ghar, Nal Se Jal’ is a very important undertaking and will get much needed impetus with the bulk of budget allocated to this initiative. CM

CM

Mr. Vivek Bhatia Managing Director & CEO, thyssenkrupp Industries India The Union Budget for the year 2022-23 will re-energize the infrastructure sector, including multi-modal transportations through the PM Gati Shakti. With Capital Expenditure at more than 4% of GDP and a renewed push in incentivizing various sectors like agriculture, manufacturing, health, digital education, and a big move for transition to clean energy, the budget will drive industrial growth in a big way. The creation of more efficient freight corridors through an additional 25,000 km of roadways, and the launch of a Unified Logistics Interface platform will not only be a major boost for the economy but iron out the gaps in both supply and demand. The renewed thrust on Make in India is expected to generate 6 million jobs, which is important in restructuring the economy with a digital push going forward. The additional allocation to the PLI scheme will certainly bring in more investments into the economy. Concessions in import duties on raw materials, and export incentives are the right moves to make India a global manufacturing hub. It is a very forward looking and progressive budget. CM 12

Russia: logistics industry is on the rise

The role of logistics industry significantly increased in Russia and currently attracts huge investments, pandemic changed the behavior of the people – e-commerce is on peak, lack of labor power pushes the producing and retail companies to implement automation solutions and robotize the processes.

In 2021, key indicators of the warehouse segment updated their record values - the volume of demand for warehouse space in the Moscow region exceeded 2 million sqm, and the vacancy rate reached a historic low (1.1%) says Colliers International report. A clear confirmation of these statements is the growth of exhibitions, including CeMAT RUSSIA, which are the reflection of the situation on the 16

Vedanta Aluminium to collaborate with construction industry for fly-ash and bauxite-residue utilisation

Vedanta Aluminium Business will collaborate with cement, construction and infrastructure industries for gainful utilisation of its by-products fly-ash (a by-product in thermal power generation) and bauxiteresidue (a by-product of producing alumina from bauxite). At a national-level webinar held with global experts and participants from the cement industry, the company also sought interest from cement manufacturers for setting up integrated cement plants or cement clinker grinding/blending/processing units adjacent to its plants in Odisha and Chhattisgarh. Since aluminium is a continuous process industry, proximity to the company’s operations will give cement manufacturers a continuous supply of high-quality fly-ash and bauxite-residue, save costs incurred on logistics, and provide access to emerging construction markets in eastern and central India. Vedanta Aluminium’s webinar was attended by almost two hundred executives from the cement, construction and infrastructure sectors. Renowned experts in this domain – Ulhas Parlikar, global

consultant, waste management, circular economy, policy advocacy, AFR & co-processing; Prof (Dr) Virendra Kumar Paul, head, department of building engineering and management, School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi; and Dr Amit Chatterjee, director, R&D, aluminium business, Vedanta, shared their insights. Rahul Sharma, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium Business, said, “Sustainable business practices form the bedrock of our operational excellence, as we generate long-term value for our customers and communities. We hope Indian cement producers come forth to work with us on this innovative solution, which is a true win-win scenario for the industry and environment.” Fly-ash and bauxite-residue, the two most voluminous by-products generated by the aluminium industry, can be used in cement and concrete manufacturing, providing cement manufacturers significant benefits in terms of quality output, cost and sustainability. Fly ash can partially replace cement in concrete (or be used to produce blended cement), significantly improving durability and workability of cement. In cement manufacturing, every tonne of fly-ash used can help save around 700-800 kg of carbon emissions, 4.2 million KJ of energy, and 341 litres of water. Bauxite-residue can be a very useful additive in raw mix for cement clinkers. The advantages of using bauxite-residue with slag improves properties of the raw mix, reduces energy consumption, and improves the strength of the final product. Both fly ash and bauxite residue being industrial wastes themselves, come with significant cost and energy advantages as well. CM || www.constructionmirror.com ||

processes, is the most frequent method for extracting non-fuel minerals, accounting for 97 percent of total production. Surface extraction is used by miners for minerals that are close to the surface. On the surface, there are three major ways to mine. Quarrying, open-pit mining, and strip mining are examples of these methods.

M i n i n g E q u i pm e n t

Miners may cut blocks of hard stone for decorative reasons, such as granite for construction, in quarrying. Quarrying, on the other hand, can refer to the extraction of gravel, crushed stone, and sand utilising procedures comparable to open-pit mining. Open-pit mining entails digging a big hole in the ground and extracting the required material from it. Miners may use this approach to recover silver from the soil. Underground silver mining is the other method. The initial stage in building an open pit is sometimes demolishing a hilltop with explosives to reveal the rocky materials beneath. For this process, rotary drills are used to create the holes that will be used to insert the explosives. Strip mining is the third sort of surface mining, and it involves extracting thin layers of coal from near the surface. Strip mining is included here to fill out the three types of surface mining utilised around the world.

The motor, whether diesel or electric, and the cockpit are both located here. • The loader is supported by a movable arm or mast. • Through cables and ropes, the loader is held vertically to the main arm and horizontally to the main framework. • Cables, ropes, and chains that allow the excavation process to be manoeuvred. • Because the tanks' wheels or caterpillars will sink, it has metal feet. Excavator Shovels: Excavator shovel or mechanical shovel is a self-propelled machine that excavates land or loads, lifts, rotates, and unloads materials by the action of the spoon, fixed to a set formed by boom and arm or rocker arm, without the supporting structure or chassis moving. Bucket Wheel Excavator: It is a continuous productionmachine in which the functions of starting, loading, and transport are divided inside it, with the first two being performed by an impeller and the last by a conveyor belt system. It has the capacity to extract 240,000 tonnes of coal or 240,000 cubic metres of wastewater each day, enough to fill a 30-meter-deep soccer field.

Mining Industry India In the steel and alumina industries, India has a competitive advantage in terms of production and conversion costs. Its strategic location allows for the development of export potential as well as fast-growing Asian markets. There are 1,531 active mines in India. Iron ore, bauxite, chromium, manganese ore, baryte, rare earth, and mineral salts are all abundant in the country. 95 minerals, 4 fuel-related minerals, 10 metallic minerals, 23 non-metallic minerals, 3 atomic minerals, and 55 minor minerals are produced in the country (including building and other minerals). but it is in the works. Although the initial cost is significant, firms should consider purchasing electric vehicles because they deliver a quick return on investment. Why? They have reduced operating costs and have been shown to be more efficient than typical fleets. What's better? Electric vehicles have virtually no emissions, making them a desirable option in a world that is becoming increasingly concerned about pollution. Boom trucks, LHDs, and mobile rock breakers are among the vehicles found in these electrified fleets. Regardless of how far we've gone, mining is still a hazardous occupation. Growth is being fueled by an increase in infrastructural construction and automobile manufacture. The power and cement sectors are also contributing to the sector's growth. Given the excellent development prospects for the residential and commercial construction industries, demand for iron and steel is expected to continue. Due to reforms such as the Make in India Campaign, Smart Cities, Rural Electrification, and a focus on building renewable energy projects under the National Electricity Policy, as well as increased infrastructure development, India's metals and mining sector is expected to undergo significant changes in the coming years. Union Budget 2022, A Big Push For The Construction and Infrastructure Industry The Union budget for the year 2022-23 has a big impetus on infrastructure and construction industry. The policies made by the government for roads and highways, affordable housing etc. is a big and much required push to the construction industry. We have passed hree COVID waves and their various interruptions appear to have been left behind. In light of this, the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has delivered a "nation-building Budget" that prioritises the development of core infrastructure, which is critical for economic growth, and allocates funds to critical sectors such as education and healthcare, as well as numerous initiatives aimed at achieving inclusive growth. PM Gati Shakti was kindled by the seven engines of roads, railroads, airports, ports, mass transportation, waterways, and logistics, according to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who presented the Union Budget 2022. According to FM, this will assist the economy advance. "In 2022-23, the PM Gati Shakti Master Plan for Expressways will be implemented, allowing for faster mobility. In 2022-23, the National Highway network

|| www.constructionmirror.com ||

would be developed by 25,000 kilometres, costing Rs 20,000 crore." What’s in budget 2022-23 for Real Estate? The Union Budget 2022-23 statements appear enabling and futuristic, with a major focus on affordable housing and infrastructure development. Due to the Coronavirus-related issues, India's real estate sector has suffered from a housing sales slowdown, reduced site visits, and project delays in recent years. Budget plans for 2022-23 have given a boost to the affordable housing industry and decreased anti-dumping duties on steel. Let's take a closer look at the recommendations and their impact on the real estate industry. The finance minister has advised that over 80 lakh affordable dwellings be built and delivered by the year 2023, in order to give the 'Housing for All' campaign a boost. These homes will be built as part of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, the government's flagship housing development programme (PMAY). It will give the economically disadvantaged a chance to acquire a home at a reasonable price.

In addition, the Finance Minister has requested an allocation of Rs 48,000 crore for stalled projects under the country's affordable housing initiatives. It will allow for the prompt completion of projects that are currently under construction. The real estate industry is not self-contained; it collaborates with other industries such as steel, iron, cement, and other linked products. The Finance Minister has cancelled the Countervailing Duty and Anti-dumping Duty on stainless steel, coated steel, alloy steel bars, and high-speed steel in the Union Budget 2022-23 announcements. The decision was made to provide immediate help to the steel industry, which has been hit hard by recent increases in metal prices. It will also limit Chinese imports while promoting domestic manufacturing. It will have a direct influence on the construction and related businesses, as steel and steel products are used extensively in house construction. The Union Budget for 2022-23 emphasised the importance of developing Mega Cities as well as a greater focus on Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. In the not-too-distant future, these cities will be transformed into economic powerhouses. The government seeks to assist and collaborate with states in the development of urban capacity. The Union Government has announced the formation of a high-powered committee to make policy recommendations and capacity building linked to urban infrastructure development in order to bring a could not be maintained. The Union Government has strengthened its attention on infrastructure development in the Union Budget 2022-23. The National Highways will be expanded by 25,000 kilometres over the next year under PM Gati Shakti's leadership. The government wants to implement the National Ropeway Programme in Public-Private Partnership to promote connectivity (PPP). Roads, Railways, Airports, Ports, Mass Transportation, Waterways, and logistic Infrastructure are the seven engines of PM Gati Shakti. The creation of 100 new freight ports will enhance the country's infrastructure and construction industries. The Union Budget 2022-23 is forward-looking, focusing on a long-term plan for the country that prioritises technology, urban growth, and sustainability." The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, which would see the construction of 80 lakh homes, has an allocation of Rs 48,000 crores

in the budget for the real estate sector. This demonstrates the government's commitment to constructing affordable housing stock once again. However, we would have preferred greater demand-side support, such as the extension and expansion of the credit-linked subsidy scheme What’s in Budget 2022-23 for Roads and Highways? The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways experienced a 68 percent rise in financial allocation for the next fiscal year, thanks to the Budget speech's emphasis on infrastructure development for economic growth and job creation. For the fiscal year 2022-2023, the Ministry has been given Rs. 1,99,107.71 crore, up from Rs. 1,18,101 crore in the previous year's Budget projection. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) would receive a substantial portion of the additional 81,000 crore awarded to the Ministry this year, with its allocation increasing by 133 percent (76,665 crore) to 1,34,015 crore. The Finance Minister, has also set a goal of increasing the country's National Highways network by 25,000 kilometres in 2022-2023, up from 12,000 kilometres in fiscal year 2022. However, this does not imply that the annual target for National Highways will be doubled. Ms. Sitharaman named the PM Gati Shakti programme as the government's top priority, out of a total of four, which included inclusive development, productivity increase, and investment financing. The programme, which was announced in October 2021, envisions a digital platform with a national

masterplan for various infrastructure Ministries by bringing together 16 ministries, including railways, roads, shipping, and aviation, as well as states, for integrated planning and implementation of infrastructure connectivity projects. The "PM GatiShakti Master Plan for Expressways" will be developed in 2022-23 to let people and products move more quickly. During the next three years, the programme will also permit the construction of 100 cargo ports. In 2022-23, a National Ropeways Development Program will be launched as a public-private collaboration to increase connectivity in mountainous areas, with eight ropeway projects totaling 60 kilometres to be granted. Ropeways "may also span congested urban areas where conventional mass transit systems are not practical.” The FM announced a 44,000 crore budget for the Ken Betwa River project. She also announced a 1 lakh crore 50-year interest-free credit to states to help them catalyse overall investment in the economy in FY 2022-23. In hill states, the 'Parvatmala' scheme proposed in the Union Budget could be a game changer. In the coming fiscal year, eight ropeway projects totaling 60 kilometres will be built in hill states. The initiative aims to improve modern modes of transportation in the highlands while also providing a boost to border villages in distant places. "The National Ropeways Development Program, 'Parvatmala,' is a gift to the hill states," said Union Road Transport and Highways

|| www.constructionmirror.com ||

Minister Nitin Gadkari. The project will provide pollution-free transportation as well as other benefits. Contracts will be given for four multimodal logistics parks (MMLPs) in Nagpur, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Indore. The Union Cabinet approved 35 MMLPs in 2017. The FM announced that Rs 1 lakh crore will be granted to help states catalyse overall investments in the economy, and that it would be used for PM Gati Shakti-related projects, PM Gram Sadak Yojana financing, and other productive capital. In 2022-23, the railways would be given a budget of 2.38 lakh crore for capital expenditure, with 400 Vande Bharat high-speed trains and 100 PM GatiShakti cargo facilities to be developed in the next three years. The national transporter will also expand on the "One Station, One Product" concept, which will aid in the development of efficient logistics for farmers, agribusinesses, and small businesses. Last year, it set a capital expenditure target of 2.15 lakh crore. The Budget has allocated Rs 19,130 crore for metro projects across the country. Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri said in November last year that 723 kilometres of metro network were operating in 18 cities, with another 1,000 kilometres under construction in various locations. The government's ongoing focus on agricultural and rural development is reflected in a 2% increase in budgetary allocation in FY2023 compared to FY2022, to $2.7 trillion. This is predicted to boost agricultural income and, as a result, demand for rural housing, which accounts for roughly 30% of total cement consumption. Furthermore, the target of 80 lakh houses being built under PMAY, both rural and urban, with a budgetary allocation of 480 billion and a 35 percent increase in capital outlay to 7.5 trillion, including an additional allocation of 1.0 trillion for state government projects, is expected to boost cement demand. The government is promoting the building and infrastructure industries in a variety of ways and with a significant amount of new funding. The construction sector's push will have a direct impact on the construction equipment business. India's construction equipment industry is broad and diverse, including both international and domestic manufacturers. With the construction of new roads and highways, as well as housing projects, the industry will experience an increase in demand and new development. CM || February 2022 ||

Roads and Highways; New Developments and Budget Allocation Road infrastructure is the most valuable of all public assets because it promotes economic activity between large cities and the towns they pass through. Economic activity can spread as a result of this connectedness, allowing underdeveloped regions to catch up and achieve balanced and equitable growth. Other sectors of the economy, such as steel, cement, automobiles, and real estate, benefit from road building. In the future years, a strong road network will remain a critical pillar in India's rapid economic development. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget 2022 in Parliament, and one of the major announcements was the proposal to expand the country's national highways by 25,000 kilometres between 2022 and 2023. While Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, has previously emphasised the importance of a strong road network in the country for economic success, the extension of the national highway network could hasten

|| www.constructionmirror.com ||

this process. A country's pulsing economy is dependent on the highways that act as its arteries. As a result, with a 4.8 percent share of India's GDP, road transport has emerged as a significant industry. The Indian government has announced the Gati ShaktiNational Master Plan, which will aid in the holistic and integrated development of infrastructure, resulting in a significant number of job opportunities in the country. FM Sitharaman stated that 25,000 km of national highways will be built as part of the PM Gati Shakti plan, which is one of the four critical pillars of growth. The Prime Minister Gati Shakti refers to a digital plan that attempts to bring together 16 Ministries for integrated planning and implementation of infrastructure connectivity initiatives. "PM Gati Shakti Master Plan for Expressways will be formulated in 2022-23 to facilitate the faster movement of people and goods," Sitharaman said in her Budget 2022 speech, adding that as a preferred ecologically sustainable alternative to

conventional roads in difficult hilly areas, the National Ropeways Development Programme will be taken up on the PPP mode. FM Sitaraman indicated during the presentation of the Budget 2022-23 that the seven engines will work together to move the economy forward. Seven economic transformation engines, as well as seamless multimodal connections and logistics, will be included in the Gati Shakti Plan. According to the Gati Shakti National Master Plan, the state government would also be accountable for infrastructure development. The four essential areas will be planning, speedier implementation, funding, and technology utilisation.

Growth of Roads and Highways in India

The new budget proposes a 35 percent increase in spending, primarily on infrastructure. The administration emphasised that putting a focus on construction will help the economy grow. According to a survey, the development of National Highways/roads has been steadily increasing since 2013-14, with 13,327 km of roads created in 2020-21 compared to 10,237 km in 2019-20, representing a 30.2 percent increase over the previous year. According to the survey, the considerable increase in road construction in 2020-21 was attributable to a 29.5 percent increase in public spending over the previous year, reflecting the government's support for a crucial industry that provides jobs and supports infrastructure during a pandemic year. Road infrastructure is widely recognised as a powerful tool for socioeconomic integration and is critical to the country's economic success. In October 2021, the government issued a notice on discounts under the Vehicle Scrapping Policy (starting April 2022) to encourage vehicle owners to get rid of old vehicles that use more fuel. In October 2021, the government began a conversion project for 15 major roadways in the Agartala smart city. The project would improve regional growth by converting these roadways to weather-resistant ones. Also, in the same month the government announced plans to improve road safety, including the requirement for commercial cars to have sleep detection devices installed and commercial truck drivers to have set driving hours.

In FY22 (until October), the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways constructed 4,450 kilometres of national highways, compared to 4,956 kilometres in FY21 (until October). Nitin Gadkari, has also inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for road projects worth Rs 4,160 crore in the Jaunpur and Mirzapur districts. In India, the road building business is undergoing a transformation. The face of the sector is changing due to strong demand, increasing investments, liquidity support, and major policy support. Significantly, the private sector has emerged as a key stakeholder in the development of India's road infrastructure. In FY21, India has 125 PPP projects worth a total of US$ 23.25 billion. With the government allowing 100 percent foreign direct investment in the road industry, various international corporations have formed partnerships with Indian players in order to profit from the sector's expansion. India is utilising innovative technologies to complete the most complicated road projects on schedule and in an environmentally sustainable manner, with the added benefit of reducing project lifecycle costs. Electric Highway

The Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has stated that India's first electric highway will be built between Delhi and Jaipur in the near future. Gadkari stated that his government is in talks with a foreign corporation to build a roadway connecting the

two cities. Aside from the Delhi-Jaipur route, talks with a Swedish firm are also underway for an electric highway stretch on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. Gadkari has advocated for foreign investment in the road sector and has already asked the EU to help India build an electric highway. He said that 22 green expressways were in the works, with seven of them having already begun construction. The Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has announced that India's first electric highway will be built between Delhi and Jaipur in the near future. Gadkari claims that his government is in talks with a foreign company to build a road linking the two cities. Nitin Gadkari had already assessed the construction of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, which is expected to reduce travel time between the two cities from about 24 hours to half. He further predicted that in the near future, the distance between Jaipur and Delhi will be completed in less than two hours. According to the National Highways Authority of India, the travel time between Delhi and Jaipur will be reduced by March of this year (NHAI). The NHAI expects the Sohna elevated road, which is currently under construction, and the Sohna-Dausa segment of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, which is also under construction, to be completed and signal-free for commuters by that time.

Skill Development in Road Sector

Given the anticipated large investments in the road industry, India's road sector skills development is more important than ever. Projects in the Roads and Bridges Sector are experiencing a severe scarcity of certified qualified employees in several trades for a variety of specialised operations. Unfortunately, most ongoing skilling projects are mostly focused on educating housing construction-related skill trades, such as masons, plumbers, carpenters, bar benders, and electricians, which is a century-old attitude. The majority of the skills shortages in the road sector are still unmet. Over the last few decades, governments at both the federal and state levels have taken ad hoc and fragmented approaches to this problem. For decades, research, skills development and || www.constructionmirror.com ||

hand, is fraught with geological dangers. Unforeseen circumstances must be addressed in the risk matrix. Late tunnel contract terms were largely adapted from highway contracts, which were unable to address the unique requirements of tunnelling in high-altitude geological layers. The use of improved construction materials, automation, and machine-control technology is constantly increasing. Project monitoring information systems, intelligent transportation management systems, advanced traffic management systems, real-time vehicle tracking, and incident management are just a few examples. Establishing a single archive of case studies, as well as a technical cell with a panel of specialists, will aid project development. India needs to issue a national policy mandating the availability of technological data on national servers, allowing parties to build their own ecosystem.

training in the road sector has been neglected. This strategy could be reviewed and analysed in a more holistic manner to develop the appropriate ecosystem for skills development for the roads sector. Through authorized Training Providers in the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) has taken the initiative for skill development of workers in the highway construction sector under Recognized Prior Learning (RPL) in projects worth $100 million and above. A dedicated fund of 0.1 percent of civil construction costs has been set aside for skill development, according to the scheme. Every contractor awarded a highway contract is required to train at least ten people for every one crore spent on the project. The government pays for all training and assessment fees under

this program. In addition, the system provides for the distribution of a stipend to trainees in order to compensate for wage loss throughout the training term.

Difficulties with Road Safety

The Government of India has placed a strong emphasis on upgrading and developing National Highways in the country over the previous few decades. High-speed corridors, including access control highways and expressways, are now being planned and built. Highways, particularly high-speed corridors, must be planned and equipped with suitable safety equipment in order to reduce accidents. India is without a doubt one of the countries with the highest number of traffic deaths. Accidents on the road occur for a variety of reasons, including interactions between road users and the road environment. The road factor,

|| www.constructionmirror.com ||

vehicle factor, and human factor are the three main contributing elements to accidents. It is our obligation as highway engineers to provide a safe environment for road users. To reduce accidents, engineering methods must be integrated with education, enforcement, and trauma treatment. A coordinated and determined strategy by all authorities is required to prevent accidents and fatalities on Indian roads and highways. Aside from enforcing traffic laws, there is much that can be done to educate, train, and improve the behaviour of road users. Highway engineers must also play a crucial role in the development of highways and roads in the country, ensuring that proper safety measures are taken.

All You Need to Know About the Drilling and Piling Machines A drilling rig is a kind of construction equipment that is used to drill holes in the ground. They can range in size from huge constructions to lightweight structures that can be handled manually by a single person. Drilling rigs can examine the physical qualities of rocks, soil, and groundwater as well as take samples from mineral deposits. They can also be used to construct underground structures such as tunnels, shafts, and pipes. Choosing a Right Drilling Rig A drilling rig could be used for a variety of tasks, such as drilling a well to access a natural resource (water, oil, geothermal energy, etc.), laying foundations, blasting holes in a mine, taking samples from the earth, and so on. It's important to figure out what the drilling rig will be utilised for and what kind of terrain it'll be working in. Different types of drilling rigs are available depending on the terrain: rotary drilling rigs, percussion drilling rigs, down-the-hole drilling rigs, top hammer drilling rigs (with high

|| www.constructionmirror.com ||

hammer), and so on. To make the best decision, you must first determine whether the drilling rig will be used for your core business or for occasional operations, and whether you want to take advantage of the most recent innovations or if a machine that has proven its worth over several decades would be more appropriate for you. Safety, dependability, and convenience of use are all critical factors to consider, and they are all intertwined. When operated according to the manufacturer's guidelines, a machine that is reliable and simple to operate promotes user safety.

Different Types of Drilling Technology Rolling Drilling: Rotary drilling digs a hole by grinding the rock with a tool under the weight and rotation of the drill bit. It is mostly utilised in the oil industry. Under the pressure of a drilling fluid pushed into the drill string, the cuttings are brought to the surface.

Drilling fluid also aids in the consolidation of the borehole's walls, removing the need to case it as the operation advances. Down-the-hole drilling (also known as rotary percussion drilling or rotary hammer drilling) involves using drilling rigs that use a rotary cutter (drill head) to drill the hole and a pneumatic hammer to hammer the bottom of the hole. Under the pressure of the compressed air used for the hammer, the excavated material rises to the surface. These drilling rigs are powerful and can drill at a rapid rate, particularly in rock. An air injection at the end of the drill pipe propels the water up the borehole for artesian wells (wells where water naturally rises to the surface under groundwater pressure) or geothermal drilling, allowing the operator to immediately evaluate the water flow encountered. This drilling method is utilised for hard and broken ground up to a depth of 4,000 metres. Top hammer drilling employs drilling rigs that use a percussion system as well, but one that is located outside the borehole. They're primarily utilised for small-diameter drilling, such as mineral exploration or tie rod installation in rock. Because the structure of the ground bored through might cause significant deviation, this technique is employed for shallow boreholes. These drilling

rigs, on the other hand, can work in any direction. Auger boring is a rotary drilling technique that uses a worm screw (the auger). Unconsolidated clay or sand terrain is best suited for this type of drilling. The worm screw transports the excavated material directly to the surface. Deep drilling may necessitate raising the auger on a regular basis to empty it of the excavated material. Percussion drilling entails shattering the rock with a tool, the drill bit, which is dropped by gravity. Vertical drilling is the only way to employ this sort of drilling. It is required to protect the borehole as it is drilled to keep it from collapsing. When the cuttings obstruct drilling, the drill bit is replaced with a flap valve bailer, and the cuttings are reassembled. The flap valve bailer is a tube that has a tilting flap at the lower half. This tilting flap allows excavated material to be loaded into the tube, which is then delivered to the surface. Pipe jacking is mostly utilised for horizontal pipe installation. The tube is progressively pushed by percussion, with the excavated material being removed either by water injection or an auger at the end of the drilling operation. This method is particularly useful for avoiding vibrations being transmitted to nearby structures while digging a trench.

Different types of Drilling Machines and Tools Drilling rigs are divided into two categories: autonomous crawlers and truck or trailer-mounted drilling rigs. Crawler Drills: If it needs to move at a low speed through uneven terrain or on very loose ground, you'll need to go for a crawler. The surface area of the tracks determines the drilling rig's stability. As a result, the drilling rig will be more stable if the tracks are broader. Wide tracks, on the other hand, will wear down and break down the ground more quickly when going, especially when turning. A crawler drilling rig travels at a pace of around 4 km/h. They are therefore better adapted for work that requires little travel. Truck Drills: Drilling rigs installed on trucks or trailers are not self-contained in terms of

movement or power, which can come from the transport vehicle or a separate generator. They are, nevertheless, far less expensive than crawler drilling rigs. Drilling Buckets: Drilling buckets are used to drill below groundwater level in both cohesive and non-cohesive soil. Drilling buckets can be used to shatter and shred hard soil as well as medium-hard rock. For drill rigs with striker plate, its design enables for a manual or automatic opening mechanism to be installed (for emptying). Soil Bucket: A bucket consists of a hollow, cylindrical part with a hatch on the bottom and a slit joined to one end of the cylinder by a hinge. Cutting teeth are welded to the slit's edge to assist in loading the soil into the cylindrical bucket and to keep it from spilling out when the tool is removed. The hatch is unhooked from the bucket body and the soil is evacuated once the drilling tool has been raised to the surface. The bucket is perfect for excavating loose, cohesion-less soil or soft clay below the water table because it is a closed drilling equipment.

Rock Drilling Bucket: Rock Drilling buckets are most commonly used to drill water-bearing sandy soil, sludge, clay, muddy sub clay, sandy gravel, cobble, and worn soft formations. According to bucket diameter, drilling rig type, and soil conditions, the bucket can be constructed as a cylindrical or conical type. The device for opening and shutting can be operated manually, mechanically, or in a combination of ways. Bucket teeth can be welded at various angles depending on formation conditions. The bottom cover is composed of high-strength plate, and the cutting edge is available in single-layer and double-layer configurations; the soil inlet is available in singlebottom and double-bottom configurations as well. Post Hole Driller: Digger for Postholes The Earth Auger is ideal for punching on land, frozen soil, and ice layers, and is frequently used in gardening, tree planting, geophysical research, and road construction, among other things. The drill is composed of synthetic manganese steel and is tougher, allowing it to perform on hard soil, extremely hard soil, clay, frozen soil, and || www.constructionmirror.com ||

as a result of growing digitisation and the data it provides. Surface models are increasingly being used in quarry or building site planning, as well as drill rig communication with third-party cloud services.

Piling Rigs

The major trends in drilling equipment are consistent, whether it's a massive quarry rig or a hand-held diamond coring tool: energy efficiency, autonomy, and ease of use. Because the end goal is the same: maximum output with a shrinking pool of skilled workers, this is the case. Electric drills are quieter than pneumatic drills, and the goal of decreasing noise on the construction site isn't new. While the sounds involved with real drilling cannot be completely eradicated, they can be decreased, as can the noise associated with the rig's motor. Drilling, like all other aspects of construction, is changing || www.constructionmirror.com ||

Piling Rigs with Retractable Crawler: In the primary winch of the most recent machines, single-layer rope winding is used. This prolongs the life of the rope. The model comes with a dedicated chassis that provides exceptional stability. A heavy-duty hydraulic retractable crawler is used on the chassis to provide transport convenience and good travel performance. An adjustable chair, air conditioner, internal and exterior lights, and a windshield wiper are included in the noise-proof operator cabin with FOPS capability (with water injection).

other conditions. It can choose drills with various specifications based on tree species to satisfy the user's requirements. It relieves people of heavy manual labour, is widely used in tree planting, fruit forest planting, fence construction, and fruit tree fertilisation in the autumn, and is suited for all types of terrain. It is also high in efficiency, convenient to transport, and operate in the field. It can be run by a single person or two people, and it is cost-effective.

Piling rigs, which feature an impact hammer and a long, columnar, and extendable component, or pile, are often used for drilling in silty clay and sandy soil. Auger boring, drilled percussion, impact-driven, and rotary drilling piling are all options. It has a wide range of uses, including foundation strengthening, cast-in piles, and diaphragm wall installation. Piling rigs in India are available with a variety of features that can be used to dig deep into the earth's subsurface, construct water, oil, or natural gas extraction wells, or install sub-surface fabrications. It is multifunctional in design and can be outfitted with appropriate kits for various foundation and geotechnical building approaches. The piling rig in India is anticipating increased demand for roads, metro railways, and other infrastructure projects. Manufacturers and distributors provide more durable machines that can pile to larger depths with more precision.

standard centralised lubrication system. Piling Rigs for Hard or Soft Soil: Modern piling rigs are capable of working in a variety of soil and hard surface situations. They can bore to a diameter of 3500mm and a depth of 135m. The retractable undercarriage for piling applications is being conceived and developed. The undercarriage provides support and stability. The main and auxiliary winches are mounted on the back of the rotating platform, reducing tipping loads and ensuring great stability when drilling 360 degrees around the rig. The winches use unique rollers that reduce the number of winding layers. Kelly bar is self-assembly and disassembly friendly. It works with a variety of drilling equipment. The spacious cabin improves operator comfort and allows them to work for longer periods of time with less weariness. Operational efficiency is improved because to the innovative intelligent control system. Static pile drivers, dual-purpose drilling rigs, hydraulic crawler drills, and tunnel boring machines are among the models that can be used in underground foundations. They can be used in segments such as urban infrastructure, metro and rapid rail connectivity, bridges and flyovers, and general construction.

For autonomous piling, Cruise Control is available, allowing settings such as pull-down speed and rotational speed to be programmed in advance.

Demand Drivers With renewed activity in the foundation and piling equipment industry spurred by projects in roads, metro rails, and other infrastructure developments, manufacturers and distributors are offering more robustly built machines for undertaking piling at deeper depths with greater precision and flexibility in application, and for working in all types of soil and hard subsoil. To accommodate more complicated constructions, the industry is also shifting away from old truck/ tractor mounted rigs and tripod methods and toward modern technology such as hydraulic rotary piling rigs. According to the industry, the modification will result in faster execution, more precise boring, better handling of larger diameters, and deeper bores. CM

Piling Rig For Drilling Large Diameter Boreholes: A Pull-down Cylinder is used on piling rigs to exert force on the rotary and is mostly used for drilling big diameter boreholes. The model's articulation system is based on a parallelogram. The control system aids in the monitoring of all working functions, diagnostics of working systems to ensure constant monitoring of sensor and component status, easy conversion in any drilling configuration, and friendly customization of working functions. Drilling with augers or buckets, drilling casings directly with rotary and via casing oscillator, Continuous Flight Auger (CFA), Diaphragm Walls, and Double Head drilling are all done with these sorts of piling rigs. For diverse piling and drilling procedures, the crane control system provides a variety of programme and control possibilities. On colour monitors, service and machine data are also displayed. As a result, the rig is easier to handle for the operator.

CONSTRUCTION MIR ROR

Lubrication Failure and Preventive Ways of Oiling and Greasing Many industries are encountering difficult operating conditions and a variety of business constraints in today's adverse economic climate. The expectation in the construction business is that operations maintain high levels of reliability, efficiency, and safety while also cutting costs and remaining competitive. Fuel is one of the largest operational expenditures for heavy equipment fleet managers; in the long term, even small improvements in fuel efficiency can make a significant impact to a company's bottom line. So, how can operators of construction equipment take advantage of the new oils? The function of lubricants in lowering upfront expenses has sparked a lot of discussion. Lubricants can help you save money on gas while also improving engine performance and protection. This is accomplished by lowering pumping and spinning losses while minimising metal-

|| www.constructionmirror.com ||

to-metal contact between moving components. Because the oil has a reduced viscosity, it takes less effort to go through the engine and hence flows more quickly. Newer engine types, which operate at greater temperatures, can put conventional lubricants under stress, speeding up the oxidation and degradation of the oil. When it comes to keeping your construction equipment running smoothly, the lubricants you use are crucial. Premium lubricants may cost a little more up front if your dealer or OEM advises them, but the benefits to your machines over time can actually save your operating costs. Lubricant Failure A failure occurs when an objective or expectation is not met. As a result, describing the lubrication goals that were not met is critical in defining a lubricant failure. These objectives are frequently attributed to the lubricant, but

they are backed up by the lubrication method, system, and procedures. Providing a lubricant film to separate moving parts to minimise friction, wear, and excessive heat generation; acting as a heat-transfer fluid to cool machine components; transferring force/executing work in hydraulic/hydrostatic applications; and allowing the removal of contaminants from the lubricant and lubrication system through a separation method are just a few examples. In addition, the lubricant should prevent varnish and sludge buildup in the system, stay in place even with certain clearances in the lubricated components, simplify/extend relubrication activities and inspections, and protect against rust and corrosion. Achieving these objectives will result in longer machine life and more reliable operation. However, if only one of these objectives is not met, you could call it a lubrication failure. This could refer to a number of different failure modes caused by a single cause or a combination of causes. The lubricant's characteristics and performance, the lubrication system, lubricant handling and application methods, the machine's operation, or pollutants in the environment can all contribute to these issues. Remember that if the lubrication fails, the machine will fail as well. When there is a catastrophic issue, machine failures caused by lubricant failure are usually straightforward to spot. The connection to the lubrication failure

may not be obvious in other cases, such as when it is combined with other mechanical/operational factors, when the lubrication failure has affected the machine's performance or efficiency but has not caused a catastrophic problem, or when maintenance practises mask ongoing lubrication problems, such as scheduling more frequent bearing changes to avoid catastrophic failures. A lubrication failure can be defined as a breakdown that occurs when attempting to meet your lubrication objectives. Any lubricationrelated malfunction that jeopardises the machine's reliability or longevity is a more practical definition. Remember that owing to excessive scheduled practises, inaccurate failure mode classification, or a lack of appropriate information to assess the issue, these sorts of failures may not always be tracked to their core causes.

Common Lubricant Suffering Points for Construction Operations Heat-sensitive greases can melt and run out of bearings, resulting in bearing failure. Contaminants can enter through grease that does not make a good seal. Some brands make greases that are very sticky and practically immune to water washout, and they can easily carry large loads. They also offers automatic lubrication systems that ensure the proper amount of grease is applied in the right place at the right time. If you're searching for extended oil life while still preserving your engine from the stresses of the job, superior, long-lasting engine oils and LEAP oil analysis will help you safely lengthen oil drain intervals. Water can get into the fuel of diesel equipment that is left outside, causing it to lose power. Soot builds up in injectors, making them unclean. Furthermore, due to environmental concerns, lower-performance diesel fuel is now used in on-road and off-road mobile equipment. Some brands sell diesel fuel improvers to help with these issues. They can clean your fuel pumps, injectors, and combustion chambers, restoring fuel economy, lowering pollutants, and lowering your overall cost per mile or hours of operation.

Lubricants

Different Greasing and Oiling Activities There are tasks in a lubrication programme for applying lubricants, analysing their state, and eventually disposing of them once their useful life have expired. Management actions are carried out in addition to these front-line jobs to guarantee that work is executed correctly. The usage of a grease gun is perhaps the most basic lubricating task. However, in recent years, these devices have developed and now include modern technology. Consider the task in respect to the various maintenance philosophies outlined earlier before using a grease gun. Reactive Greasing: "The squeaky wheel gets the grease," you've probably heard. When performing reactive lubrication, you wait until a problem occurs before applying grease to a bearing or machine. Greasing in response to a noise or a raised head, on the other hand, is quite reactive. Damage has already happened by the time these symptoms appear. Preventive Greasing: Greasing a machine according to a calendar date or number of operating hours is common in the industry, although doing so might result in the unit being overgreased or undergreased. Although it can help prevent some failures, maintaining the preventive maintenance (PM) programme will take a lot of work. Predictive Greasing: Greasing prediction systems have grown in popularity in recent years as a result of their ability to pinpoint accurate intervals and grease levels to add. Ultrasound is commonly used to listen to a bearing and determine whether or not lubrication is

64

CONSTRUCTION MIR ROR

|| February 2022 ||

required. This sort of greasing necessitates a trained crew and the appropriate gear, but it can drastically decrease, if not completely eliminate, the risk of overgreasing a machine. Grease sample and analysis are also becoming increasingly popular for determining the grease's and machine's health, as well as the best relubrication frequency. Proactive Greasing: You may be more proactive with your greasing by balancing all of the best practises. This starts with choosing the appropriate grease for the job. It may also include sampling the grease before to use to ensure its cleanliness in essential applications. Carry out the necessary bearing calculations to ensure the proper grease volume and to direct your future activities. Oil applications follow the same procedure. While you may rely on a machine's rotational motion to supply oil to various internal components, you have influence over a number of other parameters that can indicate success. The burden will vary significantly based on the individual's or organization's perspective. Reactive Oiling: An atypical inspection result, such as a sight glass displaying a low oil level or a chain that appears dry, typically necessitates manually applying oil from a top-up container or spray can. In these situations, fast action is required to guarantee that no long-term damage is caused. A low oil level in splash-lubricated devices might have disastrous consequences. This also would apply to changing the oil only after it has long exceeded its service life. Preventive Oiling: For most non-critical or low-volume equipment, changing oil based on a time period or operational interval is normal, but it can lead to replacing oil that is still excellent or going far too long between oil changes. This is inefficient in terms of both personnel and lubrication. Predictive Oiling: For big oil quantities and essential devices, using oil analysis to determine the optimum oil change interval is the ideal technique. When an oil sample is examined, many of its properties may be identified, || www.constructionmirror.com ||

66

allowing you to evaluate whether it should be kept in service and how much longer it may have. By planning for a shutdown or transferring to an auxiliary machine, you can substantially increase your decision-making abilities and reduce the impact of a lubricant failure. Proactive Oiling: You must eliminate the root reasons of failure to be proactive while oiling a machine. This is performed by ensuring that the correct oil is used, as well as that it is clean and free of defects. To ensure that lubricants are as clean as possible when they reach the machine, you should analyse and enhance your storage and handling processes. This includes purifying the oil prior to use and utilising hermetically sealed transfer containers. The number of failures at your plant will be reduced as a result of these procedures. Inspections are frequently disregarded as a critical component of a world-class lubrication programme. Employees that are exposed to machines on a daily basis are the best source of information for moving your programme forward. While I've discussed how to use the results of inspections to make better lubrication

CONSTRUCTION MIR ROR

|| February 2022 ||

decisions, the inspections themselves must be given more attention. It's not enough to have a checklist or do simple rounds. Examine what you notice about the machine, sight glass, or breather in further detail. Regardless of the ideology used, this will be a very beneficial activity that will bear fruit in all aspects of maintenance.

How Lubricant Helps in Lowering the Equipment Cost? Improved fuel economy: When it comes to engines, friction is one of the most crucial factors to consider. You want to reduce friction in the cylinders, bearings, and other moving parts, but you also want the oil to maintain its lubricating properties over time. Older oils have a tendency to degrade – they change quickly when exposed to heat, water, or air. As a result, you'll have to change the oil more frequently. Modern lubricants are far more durable and maintain their properties for a much longer time. They're also made to keep dirt in suspension so it can be absorbed by the filter, which keeps your engine cleaner. All of this means that the machine's overall performance can be maintained for the || www.constructionmirror.com ||

itself. Only 20% of the energy from the fuel is converted into meaningful mechanical work in the hydraulic system and wheels, resulting in total energy losses of around 80% for a typical construction machine. Lower viscosity fluids are easier to pump around, and you can reduce overall losses by lowering friction and heat by using them. Even minor improvements in each system can have a significant impact on total machine efficiency.

duration of the drain interval. The machine's better performance translates to fewer gallons burned per day. For example, corporations frequently utilise 15W-40 viscosity grade oils in their engines. It is conceivable, however, to utilise a lower viscosity engine oil while retaining engine protection and potentially reducing fuel consumption by 0.5 percent. You might enhance your fuel efficiency by switching from a 15W-40 to a 10W-30 oil, for example. Less Maintenance: The majority of premium lubricants are made expressly for the machinery they're meant to be utilised in. For example, Volvo lubricants are designed exclusively for Volvo machines. They're designed for the equipment's specific temperatures, loads, and speeds. Because they're matched, they lubricate better and last longer, resulting in fewer trips to the shop for routine maintenance and repairs.

Friction Optimization: Most lubricants are designed to reduce friction, but there are instances when you want to maximise it. In some circumstances, especially with clutches or a wet brake system, you may want to enhance friction. Obviously, you don't want to reduce friction in a brake system. You want the machine to come to a complete stop, but you also don't want any braking noise. Brake noise is a friction characteristic, and premium lubricants are designed to decrease or eliminate it by optimising friction. Understanding what lubricants are and how they work is critical for improving performance and lowering costs. A prevalent misconception is that an oil is simply something purchased off the market that is required to keep a machine working. Premium oils, on the other hand, go through a development phase with machine development – the two go hand in hand. They're built to operate together to provide superior performance, lower maintenance, and higher trade-in values in the end.

Less Machine Loss: Premium lubricants aid in the reduction of machine losses. When it comes to fuel consumption, it's not simply the amount of friction in your engine or the weight you're carrying that matters. It also refers to the quantity of energy used by the equipment || www.constructionmirror.com ||

Backhoe Loader: How They Work and Their Uses in Different Conditions The Backhoe Loader is a versatile machine that may be used for a variety of tasks. Due to its vast range of applications in numerous tasks, a backhoe loader is considered to be the first equipment to arrive on a project site and the last to leave. In India, backhoe loaders are still very popular. Backhoe loaders are popular because of their versatility, mobility, low ownership and running expenses, ease of financing, high resale prices, and widespread after-sales assistance. The backhoe loader is the most often used piece of infrastructure equipment in the country. Backhoe loaders are back in work as the infrastructure industry picks up, with new features and innovations being introduced to boost efficiency and production. India is currently the world's fastest-growing market for backhoe loaders.

|| www.constructionmirror.com ||

In terms of unit sales, India is one of the world's largest backhoe loader markets, accounting for the majority of all construction equipment sales. The Indian government's agreement to invest in infrastructure is projected to boost demand for backhoe loaders in the country. There are also initiatives underway to reform procedures and policies around infrastructure investment which should stimulate the sector further, as should new funding initiatives. Few primary factors are driving the backhoe loader demand in the Indian market. The backhoe loader manufacturers are optimistic about the thrust on infrastructure development. the market, depending on their needs. The backhoe loader has a 60-horsepower engine that may be upgraded to a 100-horsepower engine. The higher the horse power, the higher the machine's and fuel's average costs. So be specific about your requirements for a backhoe loader. The 76HP backhoe loader is the most popular product of any manufacturer or brand in India. As a result, we'll grade the backhoe loader based on its 76 horsepower.

Different Uses of a Backhoe Loader Backhoes for landscaping: For landscaping work, backhoes are an excellent machine to rent. These machines can not only dig new gardens, foundations, and pools, but they can also help transfer materials and carry plants, trees, and boulders back and forth on a landscape project, thanks to the digging arm on the back and the loader on the front. In fact, planting trees is an excellent application for a backhoe. The front of the truck has a huge loader bucket that can transport trees

Backhoes are available in a variety of sizes and can serve as a multi-purpose tool for landscape projects that require a bit of everything. Backhoes for Agriculture: Backhoes are a handy machine on farms because of the various attachments available. This machine's attachments include hydraulic hammers, rippers, sweepers, augers, and brooms, to name a few. Backhoes are fantastic farming machinery because they can be utilised in so many different ways. A single machine can be used for hauling hay, tilling soil, conveying material, erecting fences, and excavating holes. For farms, storage space and the capacity to rent a large number of machines are just not possible. The scope of projects and requirements is far too broad. Backhoes are a wonderful multipurpose machine for farms because of this. || www.constructionmirror.com ||

It's all about working smarter, not harder, with backhoe loaders. A backhoe loader's capacity to combine so many diverse functions into one piece of machinery is one of its most significant features. You can do a lot of different things, but you can also do two things at once. You can dig on one side, turn around, and raise on the other with the arms on either end. Adding attachments gives you a lot of options.

How a Backhoe Loader Works? A backhoe loader combines two common heavyequipment functions: excavating and moving. A loader bucket is on one side for pushing, lifting, and hauling goods, while a backhoe is on the other for excavating. Stabilizer legs, which reach out onto the ground and offer support for the machine during shaky digging jobs, are located between the two. A swivelling seat that faces the loader but can rotate around to handle the backhoe is typical of this equipment. || www.constructionmirror.com ||

What to Consider When Buying a Backhoe Loader Backhoes come in a variety of sizes, making them suitable for a wide range of tasks. They come in sizes large enough for large jobs and tiny enough to round tight corners and keep the landscape in good shape for minor work. The size range adds to their adaptability and allows you to locate the capacities you need for your job. With so many possibilities, whether you're looking for new or used backhoe loaders or rental backhoe loaders, finding the size you need is typically not difficult.

General Construction Projects: The backhoe loader is commonly used on construction projects to tackle short-term duties. While many construction businesses prefer to rent specialised machines for specific projects, a backhoe is ideal when activities vary often or when a single machine may be used for a variety of tasks every day. Having different construction rentals arrive and depart every day can be inconvenient and costly. The backhoe is an excellent machine if you require a machine that can tackle something new every few hours.

These multitasking machines save you money by reducing the need for extra equipment while streamlining your fleet management demands. Minimizing storage space, lowering maintenance costs, and reducing fuel use are all advantages. Because you may reduce the number of machines on-site, it's especially useful for job sites with limited space for equipment, such as close-quarters landscaping and remodelling work. A backhoe could be used to dig a trench, move rubble off a job site, or level a surface, all with a single tool. With balanced arms and stabilisers on either side, backhoe loaders have a particularly stable construction to prevent tipping. The enclosed cab can keep drivers safe on the construction site from rocks, dirt, and other hazards. Backhoe loaders are also capable of working on a wide range of terrain, from rocky soil to hard-packed earth on flat or inclined slopes.

Mini backhoe loaders: If you're working on a smaller assignment, such as a house remodel

or construction project, a mini backhoe loader can frequently do the job. They have a digging depth of 6-8 feet and are very agile. Full-sized backhoes: These standard-sized backhoes can dig up to 14 feet and are ideal for mid-sized jobs. They usually have a power output of 65 to 110 hp.

Backhoe Loader

Huge backhoes: For rougher terrain or larger workloads, a large backhoe can get the job done quickly. Backhoe loaders with a length of more than 15 feet have a horsepower rating of more than 127.

72

Bucket Size: The volume and weight of the loads you can lift are determined by the size of your back bucket. Compare this grade to the size of the load you'll be working with on a regular basis. Front Bucket width: Similarly, you'll want to think about the bucket's size and style to be sure it'll work for your project. For levelling work, a bucket with no sharp sides can produce a smoother surface, while multipurpose buckets can provide even more adaptability. Buckets come in a variety of styles, including ones

with side dumps or clamping jaws, just like attachments. Operating Weight: If you're working on terrain that needs to be kept in tip-top shape, such as a manicured lawn or golf courses, a reduced operating weight can be beneficial. It reduces the likelihood of the machinery trampling the ground and leaving marks. Digging depth: The digging depth of your backhoe loader varies depending on its size, and it's an important factor to consider depending on your line of work. For particularly deep or wide holes, you may require extended dippers. Hydraulic Flow: The hydraulic flow and pressure influence how forcefully a backhoe's bucket is pushed and dragged. The amount of hydraulic flow and pressure required varies depending on the application. Features and controls are one of the criteria used to determine which backhoe loader is the best. Many manufacturers update their backhoes on a regular basis over a period of time. So, while all manufacturers strive to deliver the best features to their customers, do they

actually make use of them? Multiple attachments, a rapid coupler for bucket detachment, automatic greasing, an equipment tracking system, power and normal mode, and fuel management are just a few of the features that manufacturers are offering for free or at a reduced cost to their clients. It gives you a better return on your investment, either directly or indirectly. Product Quality and Maintenance: Backhoe loader quality and maintenance are also important things to consider when choosing the best backhoe loader. The basic backhoe is made using the best brand and high-quality spare parts. Other manufacturers' spare parts must be purchased by the manufacturer. It is entirely dependent on the manufacturer's choice of high-quality components for the machine, such as the engine, gearbox, hydraulic pump, and axle. Spare parts and service Availability: Any backhoe loader owner or rental company must have access to service and spare parts. Backhoe's entire profit is dependent on the service he

receives. We'll need to observe how much time a dealer service technician spends on your equipment.

Check the availability of aftermarket replacement parts. Is a local mechanic capable of handling or resolving the issue? Different Attachment Options: Backhoe loaders are incredibly adaptable devices in and of themselves. Backhoe loaders are favoured by industry professionals all over the world. Being a fan favourite, however, does not prevent the gadget from being outmoded or obsolete. We live in a time where machines are expected to execute various tasks on their own. The tendency of the changing times is multifunctional machines. While the backhoe loader is adaptable, it must follow the trend in order to maintain its market share. Backhoe loader attachments are the solution to the multipurpose machine conundrum. A backhoe can be equipped with a variety of attachments, including an auger drill, a rock beaker, a pole erector, a pallet fork, and a multi-functional bucket.

These accessories make the backhoe a versatile machine that may be utilised for a variety of tasks according on the needs. Backhoes are an excellent platform for a variety of applications because to their extreme stability. Because of their steadiness, they can typically manage larger and more complex attachments than compact and tiny excavators. When turning, they have substantially less impact on surfaces than tracked devices because they are wheeled.

Some of the attachments you can use with a backhoe loader include: • Breakers and hammers: Backhoe loader hammer and breaker attachments can plough through asphalt, boulders, concrete, and other resistant materials, making them ideal for construction, mining, and excavation tasks. • Tamper or compactor: Compactor or tamper attachments make it easy to compact loose soil with more force than a hand compactor. They're great for minor spot-tamping jobs. • Tiger tooth: A tiger tooth attachment makes it simple to break through frozen ground or rocky terrain. If you work in colder northern areas, it's a great tool to have. • Thumb buckets: With the help of a hydraulic thumb on the other side of your bucket, move irregularly shaped items around the job site. It will keep material in the bucket and make working with a larger range of materials easier.

CONSTRUCTION MIR ROR

|| February 2022 ||

• Rippers: A ripper attachment might have just one tooth, like a tiger tooth, or multiple teeth in a row to cover more land. They're useful for breaking through hard or frozen terrain in both cases. • Brooms and street sweepers: Are you prepared to clean up the working site or the sidewalk after a storm? Cleaning duties can be completed quickly with the use of a sweeper. • Snowplows and snow pushers: These attachments make snow removal easier during the winter months and have enough power to handle even enormous amounts of snow. • Augers: Augers have a pointed tip that penetrates the ground and rotates dirt out of the hole using a helical spiral. They'll cut tidy holes for a range of operations, including post installation, tree planting, pipe laying, and footer drilling. • Fork pallets: Pallets can be supported by fork prongs in procedures involving materials handling. Many firms that want to move objects around the job site without using additional machinery may find these attachments useful. • Specialty buckets: Buckets having variable emptying processes, such as tipping from above or to one side, are beneficial to many tasks. V-shaped ditching buckets can also make digging a ditch a lot easier and less complicated. • Log grapples: These grapples fit the particular shape necessary for efficiently moving logs around and lifting them without leaving the cab in logging or tree removal activities. • Stump grinders: Is it possible to remove tree stumps using a backhoe? Absolutely. A stump grinder attachment can help with a variety of landscaping operations by swiftly removing the timber and levelling the ground for future tasks. • Crushers: Crushers can be mounted to a backhoe loader and pulverise a variety of materials, including concrete, masonry, asphalt, and rock. It can also be used to separate concrete and rebar. CM || www.constructionmirror.com ||

All You Need To Know About The Crusher Equipment All You Need To Know About The Crusher Equipment Most aggregate producers are familiar with the process of selecting crusher equipment and understand that it is feasible to choose a piece of equipment only on the basis of spec sheets and gradation calculations. Theoretical results, on the other hand, must constantly be assessed against practical experience with the material in question, as well as the operation, maintenance, and economic elements of various solutions. Material reduction is usually done in phases. Although few singlecrusher systems exist, the majority of systems include two or three crushing stages. In every quarry operation, choosing the right crusher, or any piece of processing equipment, is critical. Understanding what each crusher type is used for, as well as some basic efficiency suggestions and the right

|| www.constructionmirror.com ||

approach to feed these machines, will help every particular site achieve the best results. Each crusher is unique, and each is utilised to accomplish a certain output. Similarly, each type of crusher requires certain maintenance duties to keep it functioning properly in order to provide a specific output. Operators that can accomplish this, as well as maintaining a regular feed to the crusher, will be the most efficient and, more importantly, lucrative. Different Stages of Crushing Primary: The primary crusher's job is to make it possible for material to be transported on a conveyor belt. Although a gyratory primary crusher may be utilised in some aggregate crushing facilities, most aggregate crushing plants employ a jaw crusher for primary crushing. An impact breaker could be the ideal choice as a primary crusher

if the material is easily crushed and not too abrasive. The capacity and ability to absorb raw material without obstructions are the most significant properties of a primary crusher. A large primary crusher is more expensive to buy than a smaller one; as a result, primary crusher investment costs are weighed against the expenses of blasting raw material down to a smaller size. Trucks bring raw materials to a fixed location in the majority of situations. Fuel, tyre, and maintenance costs, as well as the return on investment, should all be evaluated. This could be a costly solution. When the producer is crushing at the quarry face, a pit-portable primary crusher can be a cost-effective alternative. It is frequently more cost-effective to utilise a mobile primary crusher in modern plants because it can follow the movement of the face where raw material is extracted. The most prevalent application for track-mounted primary crushers is in short-term contracts or when frequent moves are required. Crushing at the intermediate (secondary) stage: Intermediate crushing is used to produce coarser fractions, such as basecourse, or to prepare the material for final crushing. When making railway ballast with an intermediate crusher, product quality is critical. There are usually no quality criteria in other circumstances, albeit the product must be appropriate for fine crushing. In the vast majority of cases, the goal is to achieve the largest decrease at the lowest possible expense. Crushing to a fine (tertiary) level: The quality and quantity of fine products are determined during this crushing stage. The aggregate business, in particular, has high quality criteria for its final products. Capacity and quality (fraction/particle size) are key customer criteria in both the aggregate and mining industries. The aggregate sector includes additional quality requirements, such as particle form and soundness (cubicity). Fine crushing and cubicizing functions are frequently integrated in a single crushing stage.

The choice of a tertiary crusher necessitates both practical experience and theoretical knowledge. Producers should bring in an experienced applications professional at this point to ensure that the system is properly engineered.

Different Types of Crushers The majority of aggregate crushers fall into one of three groups or types: • • • •

Compressive crushers are machines that squeeze materials until they break. Impact crushers — which shatter material using the idea of rapid impact Attrition crushers shred the material using both impact and grinding. The compression principle is used by jaw crushers, cone crushers, gyratory crushers, and roll crushers. Impact crushers work on the basis of impact, whereas hammermill crushers work on the basis of attrition.

Compression Crushers Jaw crushers are commonly employed as primary crushers and are the most widely used crusher on the planet. They may be used with nearly any kind of material. A stationary jaw plate and a moving jaw plate crush the material. The pitman, which is provided a reciprocating motion, is positioned on the moving jaw plate. When the pitman moves toward the immobile jaw, it crushes it. A pitman is located on an eccentric shaft at the top of a single-toggle jaw crusher. A toggle plate holds the pitman in place at the bottom of the assembly. A positive downward push is generated throughout the crushing chamber by a combination of eccentric motion at the top and rocking motion at the bottom. There are two shafts in a double-toggle crusher. The pitman is suspended from one pivot shaft, while the other is an eccentric shaft that stimulates the two toggle plates. A simply swinging motion is applied to the pitman as it approaches the stationary jaw. Single-toggle jaw crushers offer a higher feed acceptance capacity than double-toggle counterparts. Oil-lubricated systems are preferable to grease-lubricated systems. Annually inspect and record the radial clearance of the main frame bearing to track bearing wear. The discharge setting should not be lower than full-load amps. Oversize material should not be crushed against the jaw's barrel. This portion of the crushing chamber is not regarded to be part of the crushing chamber. When utilising oil lubrication, sample the oil in the bearings on a regular basis. The crusher's discharge conveyor and hopper should be broader than the crusher's discharge width. To achieve good alignment, the toggle plate must be properly tensioned.

Roll crushers are a type of compression reduction crusher that has a lengthy track record of performance in a variety of applications. Massive drums that circle towards one another constitute the crushing chamber. The space between the drums can be adjusted, and the drum's outside surface is made up of heavy manganese steel castings called roll shells, which come in smooth or corrugated crushing surfaces. Depending on the material qualities, double-roll crushers can achieve a reduction ratio of up to 3:1 in specific applications. Triple-roll crushers

may reduce material by up to 6:1. The roll crusher is well suited to extremely hard and abrasive materials since it is a compressive crusher. To maintain the roll shell surface and reduce labour and wear expenses, automatic welders are available. Roll crushers are tough, dependable machines, but they don't produce as much volume as cone crushers. Roll crushers, on the other hand, give very close product distribution and are ideal for chip stone, especially when particles are a concern. Cone Crusher Both cone and gyratory crushers have gyrating shafts. They have a gyrating primary shaft that generates the crushing motion. The concave ring, a fixed outer crusher component, and the mantle, a moving inner crushing member, are installed on the gyrating shaft assembly and crush the material. A cone crusher with roller bearings works similarly to a cone crusher with a shaft. The revolving wedge that creates the gyrating motion of the mantle in roller-bearing cones is the main distinction. In comparison to shaft-type cones, it usually has a flatter angle in the crushing chamber.

regulated by level sensors. The unit should not operate if the oil temperature is too low. The crusher feed should be stopped and the unit allowed to cool down if the oil temperature is too high. Before the machine may be used again after it has cooled, more research of the high-temperature condition is required. The unit should not be unable to operate due to a lack of oil flow. If the condition arises while the machine is running, the feed should be halted immediately, and the crusher should be stopped 30 seconds later. Both a crushing/reduction performance indication and a liner wear indicator, the gradations of cone feed and crusher discharge must be checked.

To save money on maintenance, primary impactors should have strong rotors. Impactors should have enough connected horsepower to achieve a 110 percent usage rate. This is influenced by the crusher's application, speed, and setting The amperage drawn should be used to feed the impactors consistently. Impactors should be uniformly distributed across the rotor's whole width. To accomplish the proper material penetration

CONSTRUCTION MIR ROR

|| February 2022 ||

into the rotor, precise calculations are required. With the mass and size of the material, the efficiency of a secondary or tertiary horizontal-shaft impactor diminishes. The crushing is less effective as the size decreases.

Primary impact breakers Primary breakers are noted for large expansion chambers above one or two revolving rotor assemblies. As the rock falls into the rotor circle it is struck by manganese hammers fixed on to the outer surface of the rotor(s). The rock shatters upon impact with the hammers, sprays against the back wall of the impactor, and then tumbles back into the hammer circle. When crushed to size, material passes an adjustable bar to exit the crusher. These breakers are ideal for limestone quarries and are known to provide 20:1 reduction or even as much as 40:1 reduction in the case of a double-rotor configuration. The expansion chamber allows stone to shatter at its weakest fissures, minimizing fines while generating a high percentage of –40mm product with superior soundness. They are also noted for their ability to accept a maximum feed size much larger than other primary crushers. Primary impact breakers, while very productive,

may require additional maintenance expense relating to the hammers (blow bars). Some models offer limited access, and in the face of rising labour costs, maintaining an old impact breaker may be more expensive than a primary horizontal-shaft impact crusher. Horizontal-shaft impactors are noted for their accessibility with a housing that opens like a clam shell. Primary HSIs are generally equipped with two adjustable curtains (aprons) and a rotor assembly with hammers (blow bars) that are easily accessible and offer multiple wear surfaces. They are a low-profile design compared with primary breakers and have a limited expansion area above the rotor. Quarry shot material enters the crusher and, upon impact with the hammers, strikes the curtain(s) and immediately rebounds back into the hammer circle. In a typical two-curtain impactor, the initial curtain is often set at around 300mm followed by a 120mm gap setting on

the second curtain. Reduction ratios associated with primary HSI crushers range from 4:1 to 6:1, depending on the material characteristics. Maximum feed size varies with each model, but is generally limited to around 600–900mm. The output gradation of the primary HSI crusher is generally coarser than the primary breaker due to the lack of expansion above the rotor, which also affects the capacity. Primary HSI crushers are considerably wider than primary breakers at comparable capacity ratings.

Secondary horizontal-shaft impact crushers These crushers are characterized by a high 10:1 reduction ratio and by their suitability for generating a cubical product. They can also be used for a variety of applications. Secondary impact crushing is commonly used to improve product soundness and remove deleterious materials. As with primary HSI crushers, these secondary impactors, which open like a clam shell, are equipped with two or more adjustable curtains (aprons) and a rotor assembly with hammers (blow bars) that are easily accessible and offer multiple wear surfaces.

Crushers that use attrition Crushers with hammermills: In the upper chamber, where the hammer impacts the in-feed of material, hammermills are comparable to impact crushers. The rotor of a hammermill, on the other hand, bears a number of'swing-type' or pivoting hammers. In the lower chamber of the crusher, hammermills also include a grate circle. Grates come in a range of shapes and sizes. As the product exits the machine, it must pass through the grate circle to ensure controlled product size. Hammermills are most commonly used to crush or pulverise materials with minimal abrasion properties. For varied purposes, the rotor speed, hammer type, and grate configuration can all be changed. They have a wide range of applications, including primary and secondary aggregate reduction, as well as a variety of industrial applications. CM 84

Increasing use of Aluminium in High-speed trains

Guest Article

Mr. Deepak Mathur, Sr. Vice President, Global Marketing and Sales Jindal Aluminium Limited

Aluminium has let people move at breakneck speed, across the ocean, fly in the sky, and even explore space. From bikes and cars to spaceships, we see an increased use of Aluminium in various modes of travel. As transportation accounts for one of the largest pie of Aluminium consumption, rail-based transport systems are not far behind. The use of Aluminium in rail transport began almost immediately after the emergence of the mass production of Aluminium. Since its origins during the Industrial Revolution at the beginning of the 19th century, the evolution of trains as a mode of transport has been making steady progress, adding speed and incorporating technology.

in rail-based transport, especially high-speed trains. The availability of aluminium alloys has given the manufacturing of low-weight transportation systems using trains a boost, reducing environmental impact and offering a high-quality exterior finish. Less weight, more speed Among materials used in high-speed trains, Aluminium offers a balanced performance, with its characteristics of being lightweight, good corrosion resistance, good formability, high specific strength and relatively low cost. The

The push towards lighter and more efficient rail coaches has led to a significant change where steel has been replaced by Aluminium over time. Since first discovering that it could be used for rail-based transportation in the 1930s and its subsequent incorporation following field tests in a single specimen train and later many light metal trains, Aluminium has made its presence felt. However, the development of entire car shells has been recent and is increasing fast. Its lightweight properties, high strength, and durability put Aluminium ahead of other metals

density of aluminium alloy is only one-third of steel, and when structural optimisation due to material replacement is considered, the overall weight of rail car-body reduces significantly using Aluminium. This study on Aluminium and putting it to use in the manufacturing of trains began in the 1980s, leading to an increase in train speeds. Its use can be widely seen in train cars that operate above 200km/h. Railways in Germany, France, Italy, Japan and China have invested in using Aluminium in their respective versions of a high-speed car-body for their trains.

After being extensively used in freight and goods trains, the use of Aluminium in passenger cars has

|| www.constructionmirror.com ||

Offering Longevity Over time the use of Aluminium has increased the efficiency of the railways significantly. World over, railway companies have tried various means of lowering the amount of friction by reducing the weight of the rail cars using materials that also add longevity to their life. Today, Aluminium is found in constructing sideboards, roofing, floor panels, and connecting the sidewalls to the flooring. Since the early 1980's when the use of Aluminium began to be seen, a better understanding of extrusion cross-sections based on their physical properties has led to the creation of superior car shell designs using different shapes, dimensions and lengths. Using aluminium extrusions, the high-speed trains that operate today do not require any complex structuring but just a simple singleblock side. The advantage of using fast-paced advancements in technology has helped cut down costs of subsequent machining and production of elements that are lighter than steel and far more environmentally friendly. Besides, when a railway carriage reaches the end of its serviceability, Aluminium offers recyclability and waste reduction measures, both of which contribute to a high-speed train's exceptionally long working life. Given its above listed advantageous properties combined with technological improvements in the area of design and development in high-speed trains, the use of Aluminium is set to continue as a metal of choice for a long time to come. For instance, the vast expansion of high-speed rail lines across the world has also given birth to a host of new processes in manufacturing. Be it friction stir welding or laser welding coming to the development and application of aluminium alloys; they have both changed the workings of high-speed train systems over the last 25 years. Recognised as a continuous contributor to energy conservation and climate change, the aluminium alloys can also be increasingly seen across the entire rail transportation sector, including rail-based urban mass transit systems like metros. Since its success in high-speed trains, the industry has realised that lightweight materials mean faster acceleration and a lower running cost for rail operators. Combined with reduced wear and tear on cars and rails, lower maintenance costs in the long-term have led to the adoption of Aluminium witnessing a rise.

opened the doors for manufacturers to reduce a third of the weight compared to steel cars. In suburban transit rail systems with many halt stations, significant savings can be achieved as less energy is needed for acceleration and braking with aluminium cars, which are also easier to manufacture and are made up of fewer parts. In the area of high-speed rail systems, the use of Aluminium has led to travel at speeds of 360 km/h and more, while the new technology being developed promises speeds exceeding 600 km/h. Designers of high-speed trains prefer Aluminium also because it offers an aerodynamic shape with a minimal number of protruding parts, which is hugely beneficial in the train moving faster.

Commercial real estate: Hopeful and holding on 2022 The requirements of the present times are such that co-working spaces and hybrid working cultures have emerged as new concepts in the area of commercial real estate and office spaces. Understanding that they will replace traditional working stereotypes and work-from-home models, has helped commercial real estate and developers of such projects to be better prepared, ready to survive newer challenges and yet offer increased stability.

Baby Steps to Recovery

Guest Article

The new year started on the note of a fresh variant of the virus making headlines. Though work-from-home has been kicked back into action, it is expected to be temporary. The commercial real estate space, which saw worse over the past year, has evolved stronger over the pandemic and is brimming with the hope of positive growth in 2022. After a staggering response in the commercial real estate side last year, developers are now bullish as the segment is now gaining momentum with the net absorption of office spaces in India recording improvement. Some reports have positively forecast a net absorption of around 31-33 million sq ft for 2022, up by 20-25% year-on-year.

Stable Scenario

Learnings from the past two years indicate that compared to the volatility of 2021, which was caused by the second COVID-19 wave or even the jitters caused by the Omicron spread we are witness to right now, the Indian commercial real estate sector will be far more stable in 2022. Between 2020-21, we saw the demand for office spaces slow down as remote working became the norm. Digital workplaces led the transformation and commercial real estate revolving around physical offices took a beating. A report on the segment by CBRE is reassuring as it predicts healthy growth in the commercial real estate space. The report reveals that office leasing activity reached 13.5 million sq. ft. in Q3 2021 growing at about 140 per cent over the previous quarter. The demand for flexible office space and hybrid models has witnessed a notable upward tick due to the pandemic. And this demand has been seen to move beyond the metros into the Tier II markets as well indicating increased overall stability to commercial real estate. Demand for Grade A office spaces has witnessed an increase. An aggressive push by way of government policies, business ecosystems developing, expansion plans being executed sans further delays etc. will see this demand for such office spaces continue through 2022 and beyond. The impetus for infrastructure by the government has led to the coming together of commercial real estate, coworking spaces, and Grade A offices.

CONSTRUCTION MIR ROR

|| February 2022 ||

The year 2022 will see more real estate players adopting new business models by making use of advanced technology and smarter offerings. The strict nationwide lockdowns across the country of 2020 are not expected to make a comeback as the world adapts to live around it. And hence, office spaces are not going away at all. They will take baby steps to make a full recovery. A recovery that is backed by a Phygital concept – where space is created so that the physical and digital worlds come together. This is a trend proving to be the new norm to be back in the office. The pandemic has put the sector to a test through which the office space has only emerged stronger. Phygital office spaces are believed to provide a safe and collaborative working environment. As valuations have remained stable, investments towards the office space are bound to improve. Hence commercial real estate will continue to remain essential to innovation and organisational development. Beyond office spaces, the other aspects of commercial real estate – retail spaces, malls and hotels – too have shown improved business as families ventured out meeting friends and engaging with retail and dining at restaurants etc. In the travel sector, both the leisure and the business traveller also made comeback and this trend has only taken the brakes off stalled plans. On the path to recovery, we can expect a progressive expansion on the back of consolidation in commercial real estate. Emerging trends suggest that the demand for office or dispersed commercial portfolios will follow a hub and spoke model and witness an expansion of satellite offices. Given its tremendous growth possibilities and the economic returns guaranteed, investing in commercial real estate is certain to be a preferred choice for many an investor in 2022. Both individual and institutional investors find commercial real estate as a tempting asset class. The steady increase in the private equity inflows into the commercial real estate market is there for everyone to see. Also, with recent listings of Indian REITs lending a thrust to the ability and desire of developers in creating more properties through increased liquidity inflows in commercial real estate, the segment is certainly set to be a far more stable asset class that will consolidate itself going forward.
