The More You Look, The Better We Look! “My wife loves jewelry

and ever since we have been married, she has hoped for a pair of diamond earrings. Each birthday, Christmas, Valentine’s day, and anniversary she secretly hoped I would surprise her with a pair. Yet, our 25th wedding anniversary came and went and the only jewelry she ever received from me was her wedding ring from the day we said ‘I do.’

The problem was, I have always been intimidated by the idea of purchasing jewelry. First, the price, it just all seemed so expensive. Second, I always felt like I was being taken advantage of by paying a high price for a sub-quality item. How did I really know what I was getting? Who could I trust? As an educator and coach for 29 years, I worked very hard to make an honest living. We have two kids in college and normal bills to top it off. The thought of spending money on jewelry was almost incomprehensible. Or so I thought … Until I met Zoe Herrington, from Noble House Jewelry, and that all changed. Unlike any other jewelry store I have ever stepped foot in, she highly encouraged me to shop and compare prices. Apples to apples. She wanted me to see the authentic value of my purchase. In addition, Noble House Jewelry had a huge inventory to choose from, no matter the type of jewelry I might be considering. Zoe was kind, courteous, and took a great deal of time with me to help me pick out just the right item for the long-awaited gift to my wife. Diamond earrings. A pair that was top quality, fit my budget, and was less expensive than I ever imagined. I was the most confident I have ever been in a jewelry store. Needless to say, the diamond earrings were a big surprise and a huge hit. Once opening the box, my wife’s exact response was ‘I absolutely love them! But how can we afford these beautiful diamond earrings?’ I assured her that it was only possible because I finally met someone in the jewelry business that I could trust. As a result, I was able to purchase her dream earrings at a price we could afford. It was a win-win! From here on out, even if we move away from Saint Simons Island, Ga, there is only one place I will ever buy jewelry from again, and that is from Zoe at Noble House.” – Coach Trent Mongero, 3/24/2022

PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Congrats Super Seniors!

I

t’s practically an evolutionary trait: older generations chide younger generations, and younger generations push back. According to the U. S. Census Bureau, there are some 76 million baby boomers. When it comes to generational divides, boomers and Generation Z might be miles apart age-wise, but both groups can appreciate some classic words of wisdom. Here are some great quotes for both high school seniors and older seniors to live by. “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.” – Henry Ford “Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game.” – Babe Ruth “Tough times never last but tough people do.” – Robert H. Schuller

“Life is ten percent what happens to you and ninety percent how you respond to it.” – Charles Swindoll “Remember that the happiest people are not those getting more, but those giving more.” – H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

“Dream big and dare to fail.” – Norman Vaughan “Everything you’ve ever wanted is on the other side of fear.” – George Addair “The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” – Nelson Mandela “It’s never too late to be what you might have been.” – George Eliot “You will face many defeats in life, but never let yourself be defeated.” – Maya Angelou “Give every day the chance to become the most beautiful of your life.” – Mark Twain

And my personal favorite: “It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice.” – John Templeton

So, whether you’re 18 or 80, here’s to living your best life!

There’s no doubt that we have our fair share of seniors living on St. Simons Island and more retire here daily. The Golden Isles and St. Simons Island are often described using superlatives and regularly rank among top beach towns and places to live on the coast by popular magazines like Coastal Living, Southern Living, and various travel publications, making it an attractive spot for people to live – especially retirees. According to an October 21 story in the Atlanta JournalConstitution, St. Simons Island was ranked one of only three Georgia cities on a list of the 50 best places to retire on the East Coast, compiled by data analysis website Stacker. The website explained that they used Niche’s 2020 Best Places to Retire (released in 2020) as a guideline and developed a list of what’s important to people thinking about retiring. Those variables include weather, safety, housing expenses and access to places like eateries, golf courses, recreation facilities and health care. Of St. Simons Island’s population of just under 15,000, 15% of the residents are 55-64 and 35% are 65+.

They’re also part of a monthly Book Club and attend Sunday worship services that feature various local preachers delivering the sermon. She adds that they often join friends before dinner to have a glass of wine in the bar where conversation is very lively and interesting. They’re also fans of the fun monthly Signature Event. Frances explains, “It could be any theme from Downton Abby to Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Activities that week follow the theme with a special dining experience one night. One recent event was Miami Vice, complete with the opportunity to play Black Jack or the Roulette Wheel and win Marsh’s Edge dollars, good for a drink or dessert.” When asked if there are any programs or amenities at Marsh’s Edge that they haven’t yet availed themselves of, but would like to, Frances replies, “Natalie Dixon heads up a Wellness team that gets high marks but we have not really taken advantage of all the classes offered. There are also frequent outings to events both local and in Jacksonville and Savannah that we have not participated in but hope to in the future. We opted not to go on the ‘Indoor Skydiving trip but were surprised at how many residents wanted that experience.” The McCrarys also agree that the reputation Marsh’s Edge has for its excellent dining Catherine McCrary visits with her parents Frances and Dennie at their home in Marsh’s Edge.

Pack Your Picnic

I

t’s outdoor concert season! This May marks the eagerly awaited return of music in the gazebo under the St. Simons Island Lighthouse. For 25 years, the Coastal Georgia Historical Society has been hosting residents and visitors on the oceanfront lawn beneath the Lighthouse for the Little Light Music Concert Series. Pack a picnic, grab your family, and meet your friends to enjoy a great lineup of bands while you support the Historical Society in this annual fundraising event. In addition to the Lighthouse, the Society maintains the A.W. Jones Heritage Center and the World War II Home Front Museum at the Historic Coast Guard Station on St. Simons Island. As the only American Alliance of Museums accredited history institution in the coastal region, the Society reaches more than 250,000 visitors annually through museums and programming. You can help them to continue to have an impact while you sit back and enjoy some great music with friends and neighbors in a picturesque setting.

Concerts take place on select Sunday evenings from 7:00-9:00 p.m. and feature popular regional bands that have a proven ability to get people up dancing. Tickets are $15 for adults; children under 12 and Keepers of the Light are admitted free of charge. It’s recommended that you purchase tickets in advance in the Lighthouse Museum Store or online at coastalgeorgiahistory.org. Present your receipt at the ticket gate the evening of the concert to receive an admission sticker. No cash will be accepted at the gate. Tickets are non-refundable. Concerts are cancelled for inclement weather, so be sure to follow the Society’s Facebook page and check its website for news and weather updates during the concert season. We’re excited that on MAY 15, the THE TAMS are opening the concert series once again. They have been entertaining and exciting audiences for over

50 years! Known for such hits as “Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy,” the Tams have had four #1 songs at the national and international levels. While their style of music is often called Beach Music, it’s also a mixture of smooth Soul, Motown, and R&B. Their show is always fresh, fun, and appealing to audiences of all ages and musical tastes. Joining the lineup again this year for the JUNE 12 concert is THE MICHAEL STACEY BAND. Grab your hat and kick up your heels with this high energy Country band that plays Party, Classic Rock, Southern Rock, Motown/Oldies and Variety songs. On JULY 10, welcome MAINSTREAM BAND, a dynamic group from Valdosta that performs all your favorite Southern Rock, Rock n Roll, and Classic Rock hits through the decades from the 50s to today. The Mainstream Band plays something for everyone! The season will wrap up on SEPTEMBER 4 with THE SENSATIONAL SOUNDS OF MOTOWN. These

perennial crowd-pleasers and 20+ year veterans of stages across the Southeast are always a local favorite. The energetic band is comprised of six veteran musicians with an impressive list of touring and performance credits under their belts. You’ll hear Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, and Sly Stone – and that’s just in the first set! And no matter how many times you’ve seen them before, these talented artists will thrill you like it’s the first time. Elegant Island Living is proud to again be a sponsor of the Little Light Music Concert Series. The Society would also like to express their gratitude for the support of the additional 2022 concert sponsors: Ameris Bank, Brown-Rose Wealth Management Group at Morgan Stanley, Coastal Greenery, GardnerKeim Coastal Realty, Moore Stephens Tiller, Peach State Staging, and Taylor Odachowski Schmidt Crossland LLC. HEART Contributions Expand Health Care Services

Y

ou have to pay state taxes, but do you know what your tax dollars are used for? It’s your money, and whether you’re taxed $50 or $50,000, you should have a choice on how it’s used or who it benefits. You do have that choice when you participate in the Georgia HEART (Helping Enhance Access to Rural Treatment) Hospital Tax Program. Turner & Associates Insurance, along with Ameris Bank, Southeastern Bank and more than 30 individuals/couples have already chosen to redirect a portion of their 2022 tax dollars to the Southeast Georgia Health System Camden Campus. “Georgia is the only state in the nation which is afforded the opportunity to financially support its rural hospitals – at no cost to the taxpayers,” said Glenn Gann, R.N., MSN, vice president and administrator, Southeast Georgia Health System Camden Campus. 54

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

“Georgia taxpayers, both individuals and businesses, can receive approval from the Department of Revenue to redirect their 2022 state taxes to a hospital enrolled in the Georgia HEART program. The most important thing? Time is of the essence. An application for approval is necessary now, when the credits are available. 2022 credits are expected to run out by July 1 this year.” Georgia’s rural hospitals have been facing a financial crisis for years due to demographic, economic and industry challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic has imposed a whole new set of unique challenges on the state’s rural hospitals. The Georgia HEART Hospital Program administers the Rural Hospital Tax Credit, which was enacted by the Georgia General Assembly in 2016 to increase rural hospital funding and to further the hospitals’ ability to care for the thousands of Georgians who live in the communities they serve.

ABOVE: Robert C. Turner, CPCU, president, Turner & Associates Insurance and Glenn Gann, R.N., MSN, vice president and administrator, Southeast Georgia Health System Camden Campus.

Through HEART, Georgia taxpayers can make contributions in exchange for a 100% state income tax credit, up to specified limits, to qualified rural hospitals of their choice. “C” Corporations and Pass-Through Entity business owners who participate may also qualify for an additional federal business expense deduction. Essentially, individuals and businesses have the unique opportunity to pay their state income taxes--an expenditure they are required to make anyway – through contributing to rural hospitals. Turner & Associates Insurance, a local insurance agency that has been serving the southeast Georgia region since 1950, recently took advantage of the HEART program and graciously contributed $60,000 to the Southeast Georgia Health System Camden Campus. “We are pleased to support the Southeast Georgia Health System Camden Campus and hope that other companies will join us,” said Robert C. Turner, CPCU,

president, Turner & Associates Insurance. “This Georgia HEART program is a win-win for local businesses and is one of the easiest, but potentially the most impactful, decisions one can make as we work together to help our communities thrive in these challenging times.” In addition, Ameris Bank and Southeastern Bank have redirected $350,000 and $100,000, respectively, to the Health System’s Camden Campus. “Having quality, local health care is a vital asset to our community. Through our participation in the Georgia HEART Program, we are essentially redirecting tax dollars to remain in our community supporting those health care needs,” stated Southeastern Bank President Jay Torbert. “We are very grateful for our community’s participation in Georgia HEART. The support has been crucial in helping our hospital make important and necessary improvements so that we can offer the best care for our patients,” stated Scott Raynes, president and CEO, Southeast Georgia Health System. “Contributions received during the past three years have allowed us to add a new Wound Care Center, the ROSA robotic knee replacement system and 3D mammography technology to our Camden Campus.”

tax credits are still available. Applications are submitted and approved by the Georgia Department of Revenue on a first come, first serve basis. Tax credits are limited to $60 million for 2022. The cap was reached in September of 2021 and is anticipated to be gone even faster this year. Follow these easy steps to sign up for the 100% tax credit: • Complete and submit your 2022 HEART Tax Credit Form at GeorgiaHeart.org (takes 30 seconds) • Georgia HEART will submit your tax credit preapproval form on your behalf to the Georgia Department of Revenue (DOR) in the order in which it is received. • After you receive DOR approval, submit your contribution via check made payable to Southeast Georgia Health System to Georgia HEART for deposit to the hospital’s account by the deadline (six months following DOR approval or December 31, 2022, whichever is soonest). • Georgia HEART will report your contribution to the DOR on your behalf and will send you a tax receipt. • You may reduce your tax withholdings or estimated tax payments to reflect the approved contribution. • Claim the credit when you file your 2022 tax return.

Southeast Georgia Health System is a not-for-profit health system comprised of two acute care hospitals, two long term care facilities, two comprehensive Cancer Care Centers and multiple specialty care centers, including orthopaedic and spine care, joint replacement, breast care, maternity, outpatient rehabilitation, sleep management and wound care. The Brunswick Campus Cancer Care Center is accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and is one of the few centers in Georgia to offer CyberKnife® M6 with MLC. Additionally, the Southeast Georgia Physician Associates medical group includes more than 160 providers working in 20 different medical specialties at more than 50 locations. The Health System is part of Coastal Community Health, a regional affiliation between Baptist Health and Southeast Georgia Health System, a highly integrated hospital network focused on

Currently, 55 rural hospitals are eligible to receive HEART contributions from individuals and businesses across the state. As Gann noted, the decision to participate in the program should be made early in 2022 while

IF YOU WANT A SLICE OF AMERICANA, YOU NEED ONLY HEAD TO THE VILLAGE ON ST. SIMONS ISLAND ON OPENING DAY for the youth baseball and softball rec teams. The celebratory occasion begins with a parade, each team holding their banner and making their way down Mallery St. to Butler Field where the first games will be held. It’s quite a sight to see. This year, longtime rec league coach and supporter Jim Bailey tossed out the ceremonial opening pitch, actually three—one to each of his playing age grandsons—and then he tossed a stuffed ball meant for the youngest, who was held by his dad, Brent. While EIL has shared pictures from the parade in the past, this year, we captured more of the teams assembled at the field so you can get an idea of just how big an event this is for our little island and why the celebration of this day is such a well-loved tradition and holds many cherished memories. 64

HOSPICE OF THE GOLDEN ISLES RECENTLY HONORED AND THANKED ITS 2021 DOVE SOCIETY DONORS WITH A SPECIAL RECEPTION AT VILLAGE CREEK LANDING. RAIN KEPT THE FESTIVITIES INSIDE, BUT GUESTS STILL ENJOYED COCKTAILS, HORS D’OEUVRES, AND EACH OTHER’S COMPANY. As the only non-profit hospice serving our area, HGI offers care for all eligible patients who need and want their services, regardless of their ability to pay. For this reason, generous donations made by members of our community, including Dove Society members, are crucial to continuing HGI’s mission. (Photos provided.) 74

Most Likely to Hit His Target: Hall of Famer Fred Missildine

T

his May, Glynn County’s institutions of learning will celebrate the graduation of a new group of students. It is noteworthy that several alumni from this region have achieved fame, especially in the field of sports. One remarkable Glynn Academy graduate from the 1930s is Fred Missildine. Born in Glynn County in 1915, Missildine achieved international fame in the field of skeet and trap shooting. His skill with a shotgun was self-taught at a time when there were few instructors of competitive shooting. In his mid-twenties, he became manager of the Sea Island Gun Club and launched his career as a competitive shooter. He competed in his first tournament, the National Skeet Championship, in 1941 and broke 249 of 250 targets to win the professional class. Later that year, the United States entered World War II, and from 1942-1945 Missildine served in the 8th Air Force as a shooting instructor to train Army Air Corps pilots.

After the war, he returned to competitive shooting and won over 35 national and international championships. Throughout his career, Missildine missed only 327 out of a total of 28,425 targets, and his lifetime average was an astounding 98.6. He was at one time ranked the No. 1 teacher in the country and among his students were many world champions. In addition to teaching at the Missildine Shooting School at Sea Island, he wrote three instructional books, including Score Better at Trap and Score Better at Skeet. These books, though out of print, are still being read and credited with improving scores.

During his lifetime, Missildine was inducted into three halls of fame: the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, the Georgia State Skeet Association Hall of Fame, and the National Skeet Shooting Association Hall of Fame. A lifelong resident of Glynn County, Missildine

died in 2000. He was inducted into Glynn County Sports Hall of Fame in 2013. The month’s image from the Coastal Georgia Historical Society archives shows a youthful Missildine with his dog.

Coastal Georgia Historical Society presents this article and images from our archives as part of our mission “to connect people to Coastal Georgia’s dynamic history.” The Society operates the iconic St. Simons Lighthouse Museum and the World War II Home Front Museum, housed in the Historic Coast Guard Station at East Beach.
