CULTURAL CUISINE Come to Taste of Gullah to enjoy live entertainment and mouthwatering Gullah cuisine, both authentic and modern, prepared by local restaurants and caterers, and tour the one room school built in the 1920s for African Americans on St. Simons Island. This fundraiser for the Historic Harrington School Cultural Center takes place on Friday evening, June 17, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. One of Charleston’s
most recognizable and accomplished chefs, Kevin Mitchell, CFSE, MA, SC Chef Ambassador and co-author of Taste the State: South Carolina’s Signature Foods, Recipes, and Their Stories will be a special guest. As a chef instructor, culinary historian and scholar of historical foodways of the American South, Chef Mitchell works tirelessly to preserve southern ingredients and champion the historical significance of African Americans and Gullah Geechee people in the culinary arts. Tickets can be purchased for $30 on Eventbrite. CELEBRATING JUNETEENTH The McIntosh County Shouters will present a special Juneteenth celebration event on Sunday, June 19, at 5:30 p.m. in the McIntosh County Academy Auditorium, exactly 157 years to the day from the very first Juneteenth. Following an address by Dr. Amir Jamal Touré, professor of Africana Studies at Savannah State University, the Shouters will perform the traditional ring shout. The McIntosh County Shouters are 1993 recipients of the National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and have performed at JFK Center for the Performing Arts, Library of Congress, Smithsonian Institution, and the opening of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and thousands of other venues. Funding for this free community event has been provided by Georgia Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities as part of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.
WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER These words from Disney’s High School Musical couldn’t be more fitting, as you’ll see when the Golden Isles Penguin Project performers bring this engaging story about breaking stereotypes to life on stage at The Ritz Theatre. The Penguin Project® was conceived to give children with special needs an opportunity to participate in the performing arts and our
Golden Isles performers and their mentors have wowed us with their shows every year! This summer’s production is High School Musical, Jr, where a basketball team captain and a brainiac break out to follow their
dreams by auditioning for the school musical. Shows take place at The Ritz at 7:00 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets can be purchased online at goldenislesarts.org or at the box office by calling 912.262.6934.
