PUBLISHER’S LETTER

How To Be a Local “If you are visiting here, consider yourself lucky. If you live here, consider yourself blessed!”

T

hat was a phrase once shared with me by a “local” when I was skiing out in Vail, CO. And like Vail, St. Simons Island is an outdoor mecca for visitors. The July issue is filled with wonderful suggestions for shopping, dining, real estate, and outdoor activities to keep you busy from sunup to way past sundown. In keeping with the July theme, I thought I’d offer a few tips on how to be a “local” while you’re here enjoying your summer vacation. Slow down! You’re on Island Time now. When you cross over the Frederica Bridge onto St. Simons, your BP drops, and a feeling of relaxation should start to come over you. You have nowhere to be and no hurry to get there so R-E-L-A-X. Rent a bike or a golf cart to get around the island. You’re only 10 minutes away from most everything and you won’t have to deal with traffic. If you do rent a golf cart, be sure to pull over occasionally and let cars behind you pass.

The best times to enjoy a walk on the beach are 6:30-8:30 a.m. and after 7 p.m. Lots of locals enjoy watching the sun rise while walking on the beach. Also, dogs are not allowed on the beach from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., so walking your pup early in the morning while it’s cool is a good idea. Bringing a bottle of wine, some snacks and a beach chair to the beach after 7 p.m. is the perfect way to end the day! IMPORTANT TIP: Be aware of rip currents when swimming in the ocean. If you find yourself in a rip current, swim sideways parallel to the beach and you will get out of

the rip current. And do NOT swim or walk out to the sand bars. The tide comes in FAST and it’s easier than you think to get stranded. Another great way to end the day is to watch the sunset on the pier in the Village. There are plenty of park benches and great restaurants right there so you can watch the sunset and then walk to dinner. A great time to shop at our many wonderful retail stores is between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Folks are at the beach, so you can get the best deals! Some retail stores have extended night hours during the summer, so it’s fun to stroll after dinner and find that perfect gift. So, in short, slow down, eat, drink, and play. Enjoy your time here and remember: if you’re visiting here, consider yourself lucky; and now that you’re a “local,” consider yourself blessed!

Everyone wants their summer vacation to be perfect, even if you’re simply planning a

Golden Isles staycation. Not only should it be filled with lots of fun and plenty of memory making, you’ll want to snap some selfies and find special spots that are worthy of Instagram feeds and digital travel blogs. EIL can help with that. We’ve styled a vacation vision book right here that features pics, panoramas, and places worth a visit as highlighted by our own Elegant Islandgram posts. If you live in this wonderful place, like we do, maybe it will remind you to get out and visit some places you haven’t been in a while. We encourage you to take pictures anywhere and everywhere, whether you use a camera or snap by phone, because beauty surrounds us in the Golden Isles and there are hidden treasures to be found around every corner! The Best of Times

by Emily Ellison St. Simons Land Trust

uly in Coastal Georgia is without a doubt among the best of times for locals and vacationers. It’s the month when summer has taken up full residency in the Golden Isles, with National Picnic Month kicking off on July 1, followed by all the flags and

flares and other festivities of Independence Day on the 4th. It’s the month when freshly picked corn is so sweet it tastes like dessert, when the ice cream churn is pulled out of the garage, dusted off, and filled with cream and peaches. When the kids run and play and swim so hard that they drop like sacks of sand at bedtime, with noses and shoulders kissed by the sun and healthy glows across their faces. Occasionally, though, July can also feel like the worst of times – creating a tale of two islands – evidenced by the “celebration” of World Snake Day on the 16th and mass quantities of bug spray being sold at Island ACE Hardware and the local drugstores.

legant Island Living recently had the opportunity to speak to Dr. John Imhoff, Ophthalmologist, Founder and Medical Director of SouthEast Eye, about his nearly 40 years of practice and the newly opened Laser Surgery Center. Dr. Imhoff began the conversation by admitting that he’s sentimental about his career and life’s journey. Dr. Imhoff opened his first Ophthalmic practice in 1983, here in Brunswick, just three years after graduating from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine and completing his residency at the

Dean A. McGee Eye Institute. Dr. Imhoff is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American College of Eye Surgeons, American Medical Association, American Society of Contemporary Ophthalmology, and the Medical Association of Georgia. He is a fellow of the McGee Eye Institute and Oklahoma Eye Institute. During his career, Dr. Imhoff, with others, pioneered modern cataract surgery, and he has performed more than 80,000 of those procedures successfully to date. He says, “I love what we do, and I truly believe it’s

not just a job, it’s preserving and restoring God’s precious gift of vision.” SouthEast Eye, formerly known as Imhoff Eye Center, is southeast Georgia’s premier ophthalmic provider with skilled physicians and friendly staff dedicated to providing the highest quality eye care to each patient using the most sophisticated technology available. Since the practice was opened in 1983, it has expanded to serve patients in 10 different locations throughout southeast Georgia and northeast Florida. Dr. Imhoff explains that his goal is not just to provide the patient with good vision, but to provide them with the very best vision possible using the best technology available and based on the overall health of the eye. To do that, he says, “you need: 1) the best and newest physical facility, 2) the best and most technologically advanced equipment, 3) the best lasers, hardware and software, and 4) the best staff, one that is focused exclusively on surgical eyecare.” Dr. Imhoff says that these three things are exactly what the new SouthEast Eye Laser Surgery Center provides. The facility at 3215 Shrine Road, Suite 8 is an outpatient surgery center dedicated entirely to ophthalmology outfitted with state-of-the-art surgery

Experienced ophthalmologist and surgeon Dr. Kent Price joined SouthEast Eye in 2019 and has more than 25 years of experience with ophthalmic producers that include Laser Vision Correction, Laser Cataract Surgery, Implantable Collamer Lenses for Myopia (ICL), Presbyopia Correction, and Glaucoma Management. Dr. Price attended medical school at Northeast Ohio Medical University and completed his residency at University of Missouri – Kansas City. He is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and the American Board of Eye Surgery. In addition, he is a diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners and has a faculty appointment at Mercer University College of Medicine. Together with Office Manager Jeri Harper, who’s been with Dr. Imhoff almost since the beginning, and Surgery Center Director Sandra Nemetz, RN,

who brings 36 years of ophthalmology specific surgery center experience, they are unquestionably the most experienced laser eye surgery team in Georgia. Dr. Imhoff takes great pride in the fact that his staff is not only knowledgeable, but “a truly loving, caring, and nurturing team that wants to provide the best patient Dr. Kent Price, Surgery Center Director Sandra Nemetz, RN, experience with the very and Dr. John Imhoff best results.” When asked specialists. Dr. Johnson strives to integrate preventative medicine to maintain optimal health with a goal to maintain long-term healthy, happy bonds between people and their pets. He has special interests in internal medicine, soft tissue surgery, dermatology, gastrointestinal disease, and geriatric care. Dr. Johnson has a strong following already!

ability to accommodate more pets who need care and shorter wait times for appointments.

They have also partnered with Dr. Steven Neihaus, a board-certified surgeon who previously worked for Capital Veterinary Specialists in Jacksonville, FL, in order to offer his expertise and services in orthopedic, oncology, soft tissue and other wound treatment on a limited basis. Dr. Alan Weldon comes to Seaside about once a month to perform ultrasound diagnostics. Dr. Weldon’s primary interests are internal medicine, neurologic disease, gastrointestinal disease, cardiology and diagnostic imaging. He has been published in various veterinary journals and is a courtesy professor in the University of Florida’s Practice Based Equine Clerkship program. The Seaside team knows that St. Simons Island residents want the best care for their pets as well as the convenience of staying close to home and these types of relationships with other doctors provides that.

Seaside also offers pet owners the ability to schedule technician appointments with their own dedicated team for cold laser therapy sessions. Cold laser therapy is an effective drug-free and non-invasive method to treat pain and Dr. Bill Johnson inflammation from joint issues like arthritis, tendon and ligament injuries, and help surgical wounds and other injuries heal faster. Their team has gone through a certification program for this that many other hospitals don’t require. Another step Seaside took in 2022 to streamline the system for clients was implementing Pet Health ID Cards. The cards include your pet’s shot record, microchip number, and a photo of your pet (if you choose to submit one), so that you can have the information in your wallet everywhere you go. This is especially helpful for frequent travelers and in situations like hurricane evacuation!

The Seaside team states that they will continue to hire talented doctors to meet the needs of the community. They also are planning a renovation that will expand their lobby and add several additional exam rooms. More rooms and more doctors mean the

Itchy pets and parasites are some of the most common problems pet owners deal with. Just like humans, pets can be sensitive to irritants and suffer allergies. The Seaside team can diagnose and offer treatment for skin-related problems, so they don’t

develop into serious health concerns. Fleas and ticks are not only uncomfortable for your pet, if untreated, they can also cause severe illness. These pests can also be a real hassle if they move into your home. Seaside offers several safe options for year-round treatment and prevention of these and other parasites, including heartworm. Their team is happy to consult with you to see what the best option is for your pet and your lifestyle. Healthy, happy pets and happy owners are the best kind of recommendation. One recent testimonial from a family whose French bulldogs have been treated by Seaside since they moved here from Atlanta three years ago, says: “The staff is always compassionate, knowledgeable, and accommodating. Thank you, Dr. Lieske, Dr. Taylor, Dr. Blount, Dr. Raver, Amanda, all the Vet Technicians and office staff, who treat our pets as if they were their own, always greeting us with a smile!” The team at Seaside Veterinary Hospital would love to meet you and see how they can help you and your pet enjoy the best and longest life together. C

ertified Concepts’ owners, Chef David Carrier, Bo Chambliss, and Jess Snyder have been very busy. Not only do they own the popular burger joint Certified Burgers & Beverage on St. Simons, last year, they opened Certified Pantry & Provisions just steps away from the restaurant. Certified Pantry is a five-star approach to grab-n-go, with cold prepared meals, a hot bar, daily family meals and an impressive deli case featuring beautiful cured meats and fresh cheeses from local farms/ dairies, as well as some favorite imports. And to add to the convenience, there’s a drive-up window for call-ahead orders! The inspiration for Certified Pantry & Provisions was the need for those wanting the convenience of a prepared meal without

54

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

sacrificing the quality that comes from a high-end kitchen. Family meals change weekly and a new international dish, like chicken tikka masala, is incorporated each week. The hot bar changes daily and offers two meats, like grilled tri tip and roast chicken, and two or three sides, like macaroni & cheese, colorful grilled vegetables, or roasted potatoes, all by the pound. Picanha, a cut of beef popularized in Brazil, can often be found on the hot bar, in a mixed grill family meal, or in the deli case if you’d prefer to take it home and grill it yourself. In the deli case, you’ll find delicious cheeses such as Mimolette (France), Idiazabal (Spain) and Robiola (Italy) alongside local favorites Thomasville Tomme and Asher Blue from Sweet Grass Dairy in Thomasville, GA. There’s also a superb spread of delectable

charcuterie, including Italian salumi (not to be confused with salami!) like culatello, guanciale, mortadella and soppressata, house-made pastramis and house-smoked ham. There’s plenty here to put together an impressive charcuterie board as well – or you can have The Pantry do it for you! They stock a variety of flatbreads, crackers, crisps and breadsticks to round it all. If you’re in the mood for a sandwich, choose from the ones on the board, like bahn mi or muffaletta, or create your own from the bountiful choices in the case. Grab one of their house-made boba teas, in flavors like Thai iced tea, mango oolong or matcha green, to wash your sandwich down – or save it for dessert! The refrigerated case is filled with grab-n-go favorites such as Dan Dan Noodles, Tuna Poke Bowls, and Chopped Salad, as well

as house-made items like salad dressings, pimento cheese and smoked fish spread. You’ll also find fresh pastas and even more charcuterie along with local and imported butters and pickled vegetables. In the reach-in freezer, there are dashi and shrimp, mushroom, chicken and veal stocks alongside frozen house-made soups like red pea & ham or turkey-andouille gumbo, some pastas and large ice cubes and spheres for your craft cocktails. The array of beverages is an eclectic mix of alcoholic and non-alcoholic choices. You’ll discover spritzer-style ales and craft beers from Creature Comforts Brewing Co. in Athens, and choices from Anderby Brewing in Peachtree Corners and 3 Taverns Craft Beers in Decatur. The wine selection runs the gamut of white, red, rosé, sake, and vermouth. There are ready-to-drink premium non-alcoholic cocktails from Mocktail Club and artisan sodas from New Creation Soda Works just outside Athens. CP&P’s pantry items are a step up from what you’re likely to see in a local grocery store. They carry their own Certified Blend from St. Simons’ Wake-Up Coffee, flavored with dark chocolate, cherry, and almond. There are imported pastas, sauces, “00” flour and olive oils from Italy, regional jellies, jams and honeys, and mustards and jams from France. In addition to the Valrhona chocolate chips and couvertures, you’ll find fine chocolates from Thomas Keller + Armando Manni and

candies from Candy Club and Mexico’s Sugarox. Non-food items include beef tallow soaps from Hunter Cattle Co. in Brooklet, GA – the same folks who supply Certified Burgers & Beverage with their beef. (You’ll also find their bacon in the deli case.) Certified Pantry carries a wide array of cookware from Made In, including sauciers, stockpots, pans and casserole dishes, along with knives and dinnerware. Catering was another inspiration for the opening of Certified Pantry & Provisions. Chef Carrier enjoys the freedom of crafting client-specific menus for all kinds of occasions. Let him break out his custom shawarma rig from Sea Island Forge, and he’s a happy chef. Likewise, having a grill and griddle brought to your home can make for a memorable poolside cookout. Catering for both Certified Pantry & Provisions and Certified Burgers & Beverage is being handled out of the Certified Pantry kitchen. Catering director Amy Debreceni is onsite Tuesday – Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., but it’s best to call for an appointment if you’d like to meet. She can assist you with putting together an intimate dinner party, wedding weekend welcome dinner, family reunion or real estate caravan. Any event you can dream up, she and Chef

can make happen. Amy can best be reached by email at certifiedcateringssi@gmail.com. Whatever you’re looking for, Certified Pantry can fit the bill, whether you need a grab-ngo meal or to plan a backyard burger bash, cocktail party or lowcountry boil. If you love to cook, they have unique items that will elevate your next meal. And if cooking just isn’t your thing, pick something up and serve it as your own creation – your guests will never know! Similarly, if you need a hostess gift, call ahead and have them curate a gift basket for you or pop in for a bottle of wine on your way to the soiree. Certified Pantry & Provisions is located at 24 Midway Square on St. Simons, just south of the intersection of Sea Island and Frederica Roads. They’re open Tuesday – Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. You can reach Certified Pantry by phone at 912.771.8659.

Steps Toward Early Retirement

R

etiring early is a goal for many people. However, according to findings from the Boston College Center for Retirement Research, the average age of retirement has risen to 65.7 years old for collegeeducated men, 62.8 years old for college-educated women and around 62 years old for people whose highest level of education is a high school diploma.

The early retirement dream really centers on gaining control over your time. You may equate retirement with the idea of collecting Social Security benefits, but some Silicon Valley tech millionaires are retiring by 40 and younger. The key to early retirement is creating a financial plan. Set a target savings value that is equal to the amount of money you’ll need in order to retire early. Taking into consideration your current and future income, in addition to analyzing your current and future expenses, can help you determine how much money you’ll need to have in order to retire securely and comfortably. Plan now to better position yourself for the

56

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

future. Retiring early requires that you pay attention to your current spending habits and align your behavior with your longterm goals for the future. In addition to your current job, what additional means of income could you take on? Invest in income-generating assets such as rental properties or a small business. Take on a part-time job or start a side hustle to create another income stream to help cover your current cost of living. That way, you can save more money and put it toward your retirement fund which creates more flexibility. Here are six tips to adhere to if you want to achieve an early retirement: • Contributing to your workplace retirement plan means you’ll essentially earn free money if your company is willing to match your contributions. Surpass the value of your employer’s match and increase the value of your contribution by 1% every year at the very least. If possible, set up automatic deposits. Make an appointment with a financial adviser to seek advice about your best alternative option if you either aren’t eligible for an employer-matched retirement plan

or a workplace plan isn’t offered. Your options could include saving in other ways, such as via an individual retirement account, a Roth IRA, or a simplified employee pension plan. • Avoid making withdrawals from your retirement savings account. The longer you allow your assets to be invested, the greater is your long-term potential for growth. You’ll also avoid the 10% penalty from the IRS for withdrawals taken out of a savings account prior to the age of 59.5 years old. That way, you will not have to pay income tax on the amount that you withdraw. • Pay off your current debt and avoid accruing more. Every long-term loan jeopardizes assets that could be used for retirement. You’ll increase your costs by having to pay interest, which is a completely unnecessary and avoidable expense. • Start investing early and make it a habit. Over time, your money will compound, so taking advantage of the growth offered by investments is crucial.

L I G H T I N G

P A T H S

F O R

• Strongly consider opening a health savings account. Health care costs will become a main concern as you age, so don’t overlook the importance of an HSA, many of which are offered alongside high-deductible health care plans. You’ll be able to contribute to your HSA tax-free, your assets will grow in a tax-deferred manner, and you’ll be able to make withdrawals for qualified expenses without paying taxes on the money you take out. Contributions carry over from one year to the next, even if you change employers. Refrain from withdrawing from your HSA as much as possible when you are still employed. The greater the amount of money remaining in the account when you retire, the more you can put towards qualifying healthcare needs. • Take advantage of stock plans offered by your employer. If an employer stock purchase plan is offered to you, don’t hesitate to take it. You’ll either have the opportunity to purchase the stock at a discounted rate or receive a matching contribution from your employer.

I

Know Before You Go

dropped my oldest daughter at camp last week. One of the things I love about her camp is that I drive up, they grab her trunk, I answer a few questions, hug my daughter and I’m off. It was not always like this but, COVID started many new things. This is one of the new things I actually like. Knowing I was not going to be able to go into camp last summer, I talked with Eloise about a few things I wanted her to remember. I thought these same things might be helpful for you as you send your child or grandchild to day camp or sleep away camp, to grandma’s house or around the corner to swim. I call this the “Know Before You Go” list. It’s a great list for young people and good reminders for everyone. While we are never going to remember to tell children everything, these would be my top twenty: 1.

3. Say “please” and “thank you,” and “yes, sir” and “yes, ma’am.”

13. Brag about others and not about yourself.

4. Pick up after yourself and never expect someone to do it for you.

14. Look people in the eye when speaking. Acknowledge others.

5. Don’t take the last piece of anything.

15. Know how to write a letter and write one daily at summer camp

6. Keep your area neat and clean. 7.

Don’t look at your cell phone while walking down the street, the beach, the sidewalk. Stop and read or text.

8. Don’t show off. Don’t cheer on people that do. 9. Don’t allow others to be bullied. Speak up for them.

16. Know when to put on a cover-up. Don’t wear a wet swimsuit anywhere except the pool or beach area. 17. Keep volume low when playing music or a game while others are around. Remember that other people are outdoors for calm and quiet. 18. Offer to help. Always offer to help if you see someone who needs assistance.

10. Chew with your mouth closed. 19. Wait for others. Be patient and wait. 11. Use a napkin.

Introduce yourself to new friends and try to introduce others. Example, “Hi Jenny! It’s great to see you. This is my friend Susie. She takes tennis lessons with me.”

2. Be a great sport. This can be hard and will take genuine practice at a young age.

12. Let everyone get to the table before you begin eating. Say a blessing.

20. If given a gift, smile and say thank you. Hug the people with whom you are close.

FOUNDATION FOCUS

Saluting the Military and First Responders In this issue of Elegant Island Living, the Davis Love Foundation (DLF) begins a new series of highlights focused on The RSM Classic and its impact on our community.

n the Golden Isles, we are in the unique position of having each branch of the armed services – Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard - within the surrounding area. These men and women who serve and have served our great nation devote their lives to protect our freedoms. From the very first RSM Classic in 2010, we knew we wanted to recognize and show our appreciation for the military. We are also fortunate to have a specialized group of firefighters, paramedics, EMTs, police officers, rescuers and many other first responders who are dedicated to serving our community 24 hours a day. Just consider, the EMS division of Glynn County Fire-Rescue alone responds to an average of 972 calls per month.

Many of these same people are instrumental in the success and safe operation of The RSM Classic each year. They deserve our thanks as well. So to honor and support both the military (active and retired service members) and local first responders, The RSM Classic offers complimentary Patron Pass tickets to the tournament, as well as access to the Heroes Outpost. The Heroes Outpost is a covered hospitality venue providing front-row golf viewing alongside Seaside’s #9 green, featuring complimentary food and non-alcoholic beverages provided by Sea Island Resort. This is all made possible through the efforts of the Davis Love Foundation and RSM, along with long-time venue sponsor,

Heritage Plastics, plus other supporting sponsors such as Henshaw Companies, AT&T, American Exchange, SERVPRO and Chick-fil-A. “It is important for us to show respect and to honor military members and first responders for the commitment and sacrifices

In its first twelve years, The RSM Classic, hosted by Davis Love III, has raised nearly $29 million to support local and national charities. ATTENTION BRAVES FANS Come see the Atlanta Braves World Series championship trophy at the St. Simons Casino Theatre and take pictures to commemorate your part of this special moment in Georgia sports history. YOU wore the lucky pearls, the hats, the jerseys, now take a moment with the trophy. The Glynn County Recreation Department is proud to host this stop on the World Champions Trophy Tour presented by Truist Financial Corporation on Wednesday, July 13 from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Access is free and open to the public. Celebrate the spectacular winning season experienced by the longest continuously operating franchise in Major League Baseball.

FUN WITH THE BARD You won’t want to miss the Apex Theatre of Jacksonville’s production of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged at the Historic Ritz Theatre on Saturday, July 30. Three madcap performers in Elizabethan dress (and sneakers) weave their way through all 37 of Shakespeare’s tragedies, comedies, and histories at a breakneck pace. Originally premiering in London, this irreverent rollercoaster ride through all the Bard’s plays went on to become its longest running comedy. The Today Show declared, “If you like Shakespeare, you’ll love this show. If you hate Shakespeare, you’ll love this show.” One show only at 7:30 p.m. Tickets at goldenislesarts.org.

MEMORIAL DAY ON ST. SIMONS ISLAND IS A TRULY SPECIAL OCCASION. The Rotary Club of St. Simons Island has been hosting the Taps at Twilight program for more than three decades. This service of remembrance honors our nation’s fallen heroes and pays tribute to all those who serve. The program included patriotic music and a keynote address from Lt. Col. Steve Bolton, Hunter Army Airfield Commander. It’s heartwarming to see so many veterans in attendance and the large crowd that comes out to support them. This tradition makes you proud to be a part of this community and to be an American. 70

Bella Vista

We’d like to introduce you to John and Ophelia Bevilaqua, the new owners of Bella Vista located at 907 Beachview Drive. The Bevilaquas purchased this home from Joe McDonough, who ran it for years as the Beach Bed and Breakfast. While they won’t be operating it as a B&B, they will be offering their home for rent through Real Escapes Properties Vacation Rental Program. John and Ophelia were drawn to this home for the expansive ocean views, the high-end finishes and attention to detail. Two oceanfront wrap-around porches front the house with forever views from the living room and the master bedroom. The ground floor offers a garage and theater room that double as a bunk room for the kids. The garage is home for bikes, kayaks and beach toys for guests’ use. The second level features a chef’s kitchen, oceanfront living room, fireplace, queen bedroom with en-suite bath and a back deck with a pellet fueled grill. The top floor will WOW! you with the best master suite on St Simons Island – king-size designer bed, huge living room with unparalleled ocean views, fireplace, large flat panel TV, wet bar, garden tub, walk in shower, and bidet.Additionally, there is a second bedroom on the third floor with a set of twin beds. The large laundry room completes the 3rd floor. A small private pool in the back courtyard will help you cool down from a day at the beach. While in the courtyard you will be able to enjoy the murals painted on the courtyard walls and the back screened in porch. The interior stairwells have murals depicting scenes from St Simons Island. These are just some of the features the Bevilaquas fell in love with. Book Bella Vista for a weekend or a week and we are sure you will fall in love with it, too.

Trains and Automobiles: A Reflection on Early 20th Century Travel

T

his summer, vacationers are flocking to the Golden Isles via air and interstate. While today’s travelers might think nothing of a long weekend trip to our beaches from Savannah or even Atlanta, it’s interesting to reflect on how difficult those same journeys would have been a hundred years ago. A “Reflection” by prominent attorney and Georgia legislator Charles Gowen, preserved in the Coastal Georgia Historical Society archives, describes the various travel experiences. After the turn of the 20th century, an efficient way to travel from Atlanta to Brunswick was on a Southern Railway overnight train carrying “Car 51.” This Pullman, or sleeping car was equipped with twelve upper and lower berths, a ladies’ lounge, and a gentlemen’s smoking

lounge. With Car 51 attached, the Kansas City Special departed Atlanta at 10 p.m. bound for Jacksonville, Florida. When the train reached Jesup, Car 51 was transferred to a local train, arriving in Brunswick at 7:30 a.m. the next morning. At that time, according to Gowen, a trip by car from Atlanta could take “at best a matter of days. High water on the Altamaha and the Ocmulgee might make it impassable.” Trips to Brunswick from Savannah or Jacksonville by rail involved taking a Seaboard train to Thalmann in northwest Glynn County, then connecting with an Atlanta, Birmingham & Atlantic train. While the schedules were arranged for efficiency, trains were often delayed, causing long waits between transfers. Travel by car presented different challenges. Before World War I, a trip from Savannah to

Brunswick involved putting one’s car on a ferry at Darien to cross the waterways to the south. In 1914, the Georgia Coast & Piedmont Railroad, which had been built to transport timber from the interior of the state, extended its line by 18 miles to Brunswick. An automobile could then be transported by flat rail car from Darien for a charge of $5. To reach Brunswick from Jacksonville, one had to take an unpaved road and use ferries. Over the next two decades, paved highways, bridge construction, and even the advent of passenger air service forever transformed travel to Coastal Georgia. This month’s image from the Society’s archives shows a postcard featuring a Georgia Coast & Piedmont train at Darien, loaded with cars for the trip across the Altamaha River Delta.

Coastal Georgia Historical Society presents this article and images from our archives as part of our mission “to connect people to Coastal Georgia’s dynamic history.” The Society operates the iconic St. Simons Lighthouse Museum and the World War II Home Front Museum, housed in the Historic Coast Guard Station at East Beach.
