Things like, “It’s a layover to catch meddlers,” or “Scat cat, your tail’s on fire.” As a nod to him, I thought I would share some funny phrases you might find a way to slip into your conversations in 2019. Always remember: you’re unique. Just like everyone else. A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.

L

et’s start it out on the right foot by focusing on our health and well-being. We know everyone is busy, but we want to remind you that it’s important to take some time for self-care. In this section, we share some information about health care, fitness, and medical services offered locally that can help you on a path to better health. (continues)

epending on one’s stage of life, there can be many amenities that make a community stand out as offering exceptional quality of life, from employment opportunities to a great education system, affordable housing to economic development. But one service that nearly everyone considers to be important is quality health care. Since 1888, Southeast Georgia Health System has ensured that coastal Georgia residents and visitors have access to the highestquality medical care, close to home. From

the original 40-bed hospital, with the support of our communities, the Health System has evolved, progressed and expanded, introducing new services and technologies, increasing the number of patient beds, and expanding services to five counties. As our community continues to grow, Southeast Georgia Health System is also growing. Construction crews are currently hard at work expanding and updating the Emergency Care Center (ECC) and will soon begin construction on a new Surgical Services Tower and new Inpatient Floor. The ECC expansion will add

15 exam/treatment rooms, for a total of 50, including 2 trauma rooms, allowing for more patients to be served than the current average of 153 patients per day. With need projected to grow by more than 10,000 patients by 2020, this expansion is critical to help minimize wait times and allow more patients to be seen and treated each day. Comfort and privacy is important, especially when you’re in need of medical care, and the new Surgical Services Tower and Inpatient Floor are being constructed with that in mind. The Surgical Services Tower will include 16

operating rooms, additional post-anesthesia and pre- and post- recovery bays with greater privacy, as well as a new canopied main entry at Parkwood Drive with a twostory lobby. The rooms on the 4th and 5th floors of the St. Simons Tower will be converted to 64 spacious private patient rooms. Construction of those areas will begin in Spring 2019, with the Surgical Services Tower slated to open in Summer 2020 and the New Inpatient Floor scheduled to open in 2021. The $130 million project includes 74,000 sq. ft. of new construction and more than 140,000 sq. ft. of renovated space, and incorporates infrastructure upgrades to accommodate that growth. Southeast Georgia Health System President & CEO Michael D. Scherneck says, “Everyone needs health care at some point and we’ve seen patient volumes increase dramatically in recent years. This project dem-

onstrates our ongoing dedication to providing the health care and medical services needed in our community. We are committed to maximizing available resources, and adding advanced technologies and treatments to expand those services as needed.” The project is made possible by tax-exempt revenue bonds and the generosity of donors; however, it isn’t totally funded yet. This is where the 20-20 Vision Campaign, launched by the Health System’s Foundation in March 2018, comes in. Although more than $5 million of the $8 million goal has been raised so far, as

throughout the Health System’s history, the growth and expansion of the hospital requires the support of our communities.

Wedding Services, Casual Parties, Elegant Dinner Affairs, In-Home Chef Services, Cooking Demonstrations, In-Flight Catering, Drop Off Services.

“We sincerely appreciate all our supporters,” says Krista Robitz, director of Development. “And we hope that everyone who values a strong community hospital that meets the health care needs for future generations will contribute to our 20-20 Vision Campaign. Giving is easy, and one-time and ongoing gifts are appreciated. Naming opportunities are also available.” Visit sghs.org/give or wearethefoundation.org or call 912.466.3360.

peril of living on an island in the sun in South Coastal Georgia is the development of skin cancer from prolonged exposure to the sun. Regular checkups are highly recommended by our local dermatologists to catch and remove any skin cancer as early as possible. Mohs Micrographic Surgery, a staged procedure, is the optimal way to remove most skin cancers. Luckily, we have an expert in Mohs surgery right here in our community. DiPreta DermotolEdward DiPreta, MD ogy’s lead physician, Dr. Edward DiPreta, is the only local full-time practicing Mohs surgeon in the BrunswickGolden Isles area. A board-certified dermatologist, Dr. DiPreta has more than 10 years of experience performing Mohs surgery. In that time, he has completed more than seven THOUSAND successful Mohs surgeries. Dr. DiPreta graduated from Notre Dame in 1988 and earned his medical degree from Chicago Medical School, and then completed a Dermatology residency at Walter Reed Medical Center

in Washington, D.C., known as one of the nation’s top dermatology programs. He is a member of the American Society of Mohs Surgery and the American Society for Dermatology Surgery and is a Fellow with the American Academy of Dermatology. Typicially, Mohs surgery is performed as an outpatient surgery at Dr. DiPreta’s office. On the day of the procedure, a sample is taken and examined under the microscope by Dr. DiPreta. Additional pieces will be removed as required until skin is clear of cancer. Although the patient is awake during the entire procedure, discomfort is generally minimal. It is recommended that the patient be prepared to be in the office for several hours, however. The benefits of Mohs surgery are a reduction in healing time, decreased scar size, and an increased cure rate that nears 99.5%. DiPreta Dermatology is a locally owned clinic that has been serving the Golden Isles and surrounding area since 2008. They have a friendly, experienced, and dedicated team, state-ofthe-art facilities and a dedicated MOHS Center in Brunswick at 114 Northpark Drive in addition to regular practice offices at 3008

It is a syllable that is chanted at the beginning and/or end of Yoga Practices. The “Om” sound is vibrational in nature and relates to form and creation, which emanate from vibration.

well as “series” classes, to instruct students in the various yoga practices. It is their intention that their students and teachers continue to learn, to hone their skills, and to dive deeper into both the practice of yoga and the philosophy of yoga. The Clouds Yoga Center is the only yoga studio in the Golden Isles that offers aerial yoga, an authentic practice that is supported by a soft hammock, allowing the student to go deeper into yoga poses. While aerial yoga may be intimidating to some, the center’s highly trained instructors have introduced a beginner series of classes that have quickly become popular and will train students to be confident on the silks so that they are able to then join the regular aerial yoga classes on the schedule once they have completed the beginner aerial training. S{om}e of the Best Instruction The Clouds Yoga Center offers the most diverse classes in the area and has a staff of highly trained and educated instructors. While all of the center’s teachers hold 200 hour yoga teaching certifications, many have advanced training with 500 hours of yoga teacher training as well as thousands of hours of instruction under their belts. Teachers at the center hail from many areas of the country and have received some of the best instruction from world renowned Yoga Masters. Incredible instructors, who teach globally, have been welcomed to train and teach at The Clouds Yoga Center. Max Strom, Dennis and Kathy Lang, and Lauren McRae have all been a part of the center’s programs and will return for future workshops. r. Diane Bowen of Golden Isles Center for Plastic Surgery is pleased to introduce a new business focused on disease prevention and wellness to the community. Centered on Wellness, her new partnership with Drs. James Greene and Sage Campione and Nurse Practitioner Lauren Koncul, introduces a “whole person, well person” approach to wellness. These like-minded providers have a passion and mission to provide whole person care to help patients achieve wellness and beauty inside and out. Our lives are increasingly stressed and hectic resulting in imbalance and ultimately disease. At Centered on Wellness, areas of imbalance are identified based through lab results, which allow for a personalized treatment plan to be developed specifically for each individual based on his or her needs. The current medical model is organ-focused and based on treatment of sickness. While that model has been successful in trauma management, life threatening infections and surgical services, it has generally failed in optimizing the global health of our country. The goal of Centered on Wellness is to be on the forefront of prevention and a leader in this community for wellness. Wellness is a lifetime journey with no quick fixes. Sometimes the path is well-paved and

sometimes it’s an uphill climb. Centered on Wellness and its highly trained staff can help you along this journey. They offer a variety of services including nutritional evaluation and management, Nutrient Infusion Therapy (AKA IV nutrition), dietary counseling, stress reduction therapies, and hormone balancing. They also offer individual consultations and group educational seminars. One of the elite services at Centered on Wellness is Nutrient Infusion Therapy. With Nutrient Infusion the body receives vitamins and minerals directly into the blood stream to help neutralize nutrient deficiencies. There are various options, depending on what your body needs. Myer’s Cocktail (named for Dr. John Myer) contains several vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that are great for general nutritional supplementation. Key ingredients include B-complex, magnesium, methyl cobalamin (B12), pyridoxine (B6), and Vitamin C. This is the ideal choice for maintenance therapy, athletic training, migraines, fatigue, fibromyalgia, acute muscle spasm, common colds, and seasonal allergies. With cold and flu season upon us, Centered on Wellness can also give your immune system an extra boost. To help fight off colds, Super

Immune Therapy infusion contains extra immune boosting ingredients including TriAmino Blends with the add-ons of zinc and lysine. Lysine is an anti-aging ingredient that helps with collagen synthesis. It also has three powerful B vitamins along with a strong dose of the body’s most powerful antioxidant, glutathione. This is an excellent general nutritional supplement and year-round immune system boost. It’s also an added boost for cancer patients to aid them during their cancer treatments. Centered on Wellness also offers Infusion Therapies to help with post-surgery recovery, stress and anxiety, hormone balancing and Vitamin C intake. To learn more about services available at Centered on Wellness, follow them on Facebook @wholepersonwellperson, visit their St. Simons Island office on 1015 Arthur J Moore Drive, or call 912.638.0034 to make an appointment.

usic moves us all. We can soar away on the notes of a melody to different times and faraway places. Music has the power to transport, transform, transfix, and even translate emotion. In choosing this year’s theme for the Symphony Society’s Cabaret fundraiser, event CoChair JoAnn Frick says she selected “Music of the Night” because of her love for Phantom of the Opera and its music. It also appealed because it harkened back to the early days of the Coastal Symphony of Georgia when their major fundraiser was a cozy gathering with that same name. EIL decided to draw on that idea of nostalgia we all feel for beloved musicals and the songs that stay with us. On these pages, in addition to JoAnn’s choice of Phantom of the Opera, you’ll find favorite Broadway musicals chosen by members of the Symphony Society, Coastal Symphony of Georgia as well as from EIL staffers. No matter what the music performed at Cabaret, we’re sure it will be wonderful, beautiful, and some enchanted evening!

his beloved musical based on the French novel by Gaston Leroux features music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Charles Hart. The central plot focuses on a mysterious, disfigured

Fun Fact: The real-life Belva Gaertner on whom Velma Kelly was based was even tougher than she was portrayed on stage. “No woman can love a man enough to kill him. They aren’t worth it, because there are always plenty more. Walter was just a kid — 29 and I’m 38. Why should I have worried whether he loved me or whether he left me? Gin and guns – either one is bad enough, but together they get you in a dickens of a mess, don’t they?” – Belva Gaertner

retelling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, West

Side Story is set in an ethnic, blue-collar neighborhood in the Upper West Side of New York City. The dynamic and exciting show about star-crossed lovers and rival gangs featured a score with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim (his first Broadway production). West Side Story has been called Bernstein’s greatest triumph in the popular field.

Could it be? Yes it could. Something’s coming, something good. If I can wait! Something’s coming, I don’t know what it is. But it is Gonna be great! Lyrics from “Something’s Coming”

Fun Fact: Gang rivalry was real! In order to amplify on-stage tension, choreographer Jerome Robbins separated actors playing the Jets and the Sharks, held their rehearsals in different rooms, and forbid them talking to each other or mixing off-stage. The result? Shark actors played real-life practical jokes on the Jets.

he 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow was the inspiration for this American musical with music, lyrics, and book by

Lin-Manuel Miranda. In a refreshing and inventive twist, the era of this country’s Founding Fathers and our fiery revolutionary past is told through song and rap.

Let me tell you what I wish I’d known When I was young and dreamed of glory You have no control, who lives, who dies, Who tells your story? Lyrics from “Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story”

Fun Fact: In 2015, the US Treasury announced plans to replace Alexander Hamilton on the $10 bill with Harriet Tubman. However, due to the overwhelming success of the musical and the resulting revitalized interest in Hamilton, the Treasury decided to change the $20 bill instead.

2019 What good is sitting alone in your Room? Come hear the Music Play Life is a Cabaret, old Chum Come to the Cabaret!

T

he Symphony Society invites you to heed the call from that popular 1966 Broadway classic and come to Cabaret 2019 on February 2 at The Greenhouse on St. Simons Island. Your patronage of this event supports the Coastal Symphony of Georgia and its goal of providing world class music to the Golden Isles. The night will include a sumptuous three-course catered dinner and a sureto-be-memorable musical performance in an intimate setting. The night’s entertainment will be provided by California recording artist Nick Palance, who has been hailed by critics as the new “American Bocelli” for his vocal talent. No stranger to Broadway productions himself, Nick starred in the lead role of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and has also toured with the Canadian Tenors. He will be performing a wide array of songs that will appeal to music lovers and stir those feelings of nostalgia. There’s even a very special and dramatic

tribute to Phantom of the Opera planned that you won’t want to miss. Of course, the live and silent auctions are always a huge attraction and highlight of this annual event. This year, the silent auction includes unique and eclectic offerings that include wonderful works of art, generous gift certificates, wines of the world, and a collection of top shelf bourbon that will allow you to take a trip down the Kentucky Bourbon Trail from the comfort of your own home. If real travel is what you’d prefer, there are trips to Tuscany and Capri in the live auction, as well as a “glamping” trip on Little Nick Palance, Guest Performer Raccoon Key. Reserve individual or patron seating by visiting coastalsymphonyofgeorgia.org and join your friends in this evening of fun, fine food, and fellowship presented by the Symphony Society. With your support, the music of the night will continue to live on through the Coastal Symphony of Georgia. Softly, deftly, music shall caress you Hear it, fear it, secretly possess you …

The Historic Coast Guard Station, which was active from 1937-1995, is a fitting home for the new Museum, as the Coast Guard became an active part of the U.S. War Department in 1941 and played its own role in World War II. Visitors can try their hand at spelling words in nautical code or tying knots, just like the “Coasties” who were stationed here.

Glynn County’s unique and multifaced home front story is detailed with galleries of immersive exhibits and interactive experiences in this museum developed by the Coastal Georgia Historical Society and designed by Gallagher & Associates. The World War II Home Front Museum not only shares an important chapter in Georgia’s history when residents of small communities in Glynn County worked together and sacrificed for the greater good, it tells the story of the brave men and women on America’s home front who supported those on the battlefields in the fight for freedom and democracy. Shipbuilding had the greatest impact on Glynn County during the war, and artifacts from the J.A. Jones Shipyard are on display in the Liberty Ship gallery. The loss of thousands of merchant ships made the speedy construction of replacement cargo vessels that provided vital supplies to battlefields around the world essential to Allied victory. These were dubbed “Liberty Ships.” In less than three years, more than 16,000 men and women, 80% of whom came to Brunswick from towns throughout Georgia, built 85 Liberty Ships. Visitors can build and launch one of five of Brunswick’s Liberty Ships and follow them on their most treacherous voyages around the world.

The Naval Air Station Glynco gallery conveys the massive size of Navy airships and their hangars. Brunswick was home to the airships of Squadron ZP-15, which took part in hundreds of anti-submarine patrols in relay-style coordination with four other stations stretching from Maine to Florida. Once the system of airship escorts was fully implemented, the U-boat threat to shipping ceased. This was considered a critical lynchpin to winning the war.

LUXURY at The Lodge

I

f you recently attended the RSM Classic events that took place near The Lodge and Golf Performance Center at Sea Island Resort, you likely noticed the beautiful new guest cottages and putting green area. The six cottages, 18-hole putting course, oceanfront pool and pool house, expanded driving range tee, and new putting green and short game area are newly opened key components of the resort’s $25+ million enhancement project at The Lodge, which began in December 2017. Built on the western side of The Lodge, five guest cottages with two bedrooms and a living room, and one larger cottage featuring four bedrooms and living room, offer stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. The living spaces boast a cozy atmosphere created by wide plank hard-

wood floors, beams, iron lighting and fireplaces. Elegant furnishings adorn the bedrooms and charming details include paintings by local artists, custom framed television cabinets, and white marble bathrooms. Complete with personal butler service, the cottages are ideal for golf groups, corporate groups, couples or multi-generational families. To further enhance the guest experience, Sea Island has added an oceanfront pool and pool house that embodies the look and feel of The Lodge, with double fireplaces, a wrap-around porch, food and beverage service, and indoor and outdoor event space. Designed by Love Golf Design, the recently opened 18-hole Driftwood putting course on the ocean side of The Lodge provides a new dimension to the golf experience during the day and evening, perfect for both golfers and non-

golfers alike. In the next phase of enhancements, Sea Island will soon unveil an all-new state-of-the-art 17,000 square-foot Golf Performance Center to replace its existing facility, which is widely recognized as one of the finest golf centers in the country. It will feature industry-leading technology, six instruction and club fitting bays, a putting studio designed by Sea Island’s Director of Putting Instruction, Phil Kenyon, a world-renowned putting instructor, a full-service golf club workshop, fitness center with locker rooms, spacious retail area, and indoor and outdoor meeting and event spaces. Love Golf Design is also embarking on a full redesign of Sea Island’s Plantation Course. The Loves intend to draw on the history of the course, using classical architectural features and historical hardscape and landscape elements. They will create new and interesting strategic

elements while retaining the course’s character and routing, passed on by previous architects, beginning with Walter Travis’ original 1928 design of the first nine holes. Plantation Course is expected to reopen ahead of the 2019 RSM Classic. “We are very excited to play a role in the enhancements taking place at The Lodge,” said Davis Love III. “Mark and I have been redesigning Plantation in our minds for over 20 years as we have played it.” These enhancements come on the heels of the completion of three new guest rooms with adjoining parlor in The Lodge’s main building, and the expansion of the Trophy Room, a special event space that celebrates Sea Island’s rich golf history through unique memorabilia. Reminiscent of an English manor, The Lodge at Sea Island exudes warm Southern charm and hospitality. The intimate boutique hotel, now with 57 rooms,

has received top accolades including twice being named the #1 hotel in the country by U.S. News & World Report, and receiving the Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five Diamond awards since its opening in 2001. Scott Steilen, President and CEO of Sea Island says of the enhancement project, “Rather than resting on our laurels of being consistently ranked among the top hotels in the country, we are taking these steps to transform the overall experience and expand the appeal of The Lodge. When combined with the additional recreational amenities and access to all that Sea Island has to offer, we believe The Lodge will become an unequaled destination for a luxury golf experience or couples getaway.” For additional information about Sea Island or to book a reservation, visit seaisland.com or call 1.800.SEA.ISLAND.

DEDICATED DONORS PROVIDE STRONG FOUNDATION

O

n the night Hospice of the Golden Isles (HGI) celebrated the holiday season and honored lost loved ones with thousands of lights, bright smiles also lit the faces of the many guests who attended the Lights of Love Dove Society Reception. On this special occasion, HGI unveiled its new Friends of Hospice Donor Recognition Wall. This permanent tribute to legacy gifts and generous contributions hangs in the HGI

every year the gift is received. A minimum donation of $50,000 to either the Endowment or directly to HGI will be permanently

recognized in the Benefactor’s Circle and updated every year of the donation. This is a wonderful way to honor those who support the non-profit mission of HGI to provide the highest quality, most compassionate care to all in need throughout the five counties HGI serves, including the Golden Isles community. Several major contributors and founders were in attendance for the unveiling, including the Benefield Family, Hugh Nunnally, Helen and Pep Peppiatt and Johnny and Joyce Thomas. Since 2005, Johnny and Joyce, along with their family and friends, have raised nearly $250,000 for HGI by hosting the R.E. Thomas Memorial Benefit each year. The Thomas Family received special recognition on the wall for their dedicated annual fundraising efforts. Such support is vital to HGI’s commitment to provide expert care and compassion regardless of ability to pay. The annual cost for unfunded and underfunded hospice care is approximately $700,000. There are many ways to support HGI through charitable gifts, donations, Auxiliary membership, and volunteerism. Visit the Giving section of their website at hospice.me to learn more about giving opportunities. Another way you can show your support of our only non-profit hometown hospice is by attending fundraisers that benefit HGI. On Saturday, February 9, ladies can look forward to an exceptional afternoon of sipping and shopping when Wine Women & Shoes returns to The Cloister on

Sea Island with a White Party! Mingle with the always charming Shoe Guys while enjoying fine wines and a delicious lunch, shopping designer fashions, and bidding on incredible live and silent auction items. And make sure to don your most fabulous footwear with those winter whites for your chance to be named “Best in Shoe.” Once again, guests will have the opportunity to win the Key to the Closet and there will be a little friendly fundraising competition amongst Shoe Guys to be named “King of Sole.” For more information and to purchase tickets, visit winewomenshoes.com/ events/goldenisles. We’re also pleased to announce that the St. Simons Food & Spirits Festival will be back this Spring. That’s right! The festival has been moved out of hurricane season in the hope that there will be less problem with inclement weather threatening or cancelling outdoor events. Set aside March 23-24 to sample scrumptious seasonal fare and sip creative cocktails and craft beverages. We hear there will be more live music this year too! Can’t wait to see what the organizers have up their sleeves! For updated information and tickets, visit saintsimonsfoodandspirits.com From event dinners to Dove Society membership, every dollar coming in to benefit Hospice of the Golden Isles is valued. HGI simply couldn’t provide the comprehensive and award-winning level of services that they do without these generous gifts and community fundraising efforts.

HAVE A HEART When you or a loved one is in need of health care, travelling to get that care can be a heavy additional burden. This is a real issue in rural areas of Georgia, where several hospitals have closed or significantly reduced services since 2013. Understanding the urgency of protecting rural health care, the Georgia General Assembly enacted the Rural Hospital Tax Credit Program. Now Georgia taxpayers can make a direct impact on local health care and receive a rare dollar for dollar tax credit. Here in our community, Southeast Georgia Health System Camden Campus qualifies for the program. Without spending any extra money, individuals and businesses can direct their tax dollars to benefit local health care. Applications are available online and only take a few minutes to complete. For more information about the Georgia Rural Hospital Tax Credit program, visit the Georgia HEART website at georgiaheart.org.

Glynco’s Legendary Hangars

T

his January marks the 76th anniversary of a significant World War II event in local history. On January 25, 1943, Naval Air Station Glynco, located north of Brunswick, was commissioned as one of five airship bases strategically located between Massachusetts and Florida. During the war, these facilities launched airship patrols to protect the thousands of Allied cargo ships that were stalked by German U-boats as they travelled along the East Coast. When commissioned, the Glynco base was still under construction; however, the most imposing structures had been completed: two massive airship hangars, each measuring over 1,000 feet long and almost 300 feet wide. Due to demand for steel to manufacture war material, the han-

gars were constructed of wood. They were prefabricated in Tacoma, Washington, using Douglas fir timber from Oregon. After being assembled at the timber company, each piece of wood was carefully numbered before the structures were dismantled. The pieces were sent by rail to various fireproofing plants around the country and then delivered to Brunswick for reassembly. Concrete pillars 150 feet tall supported the doors at either end of the buildings. With an overall height of 182 feet, the hangars could be seen above the trees and served as memorable landmarks for residents and visitors alike, until they were demolished in 1971. The site of the former Naval Air Station is now the location of both the Brunswick Gold-

en Isles Airport and the headquarters of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. This month’s images from the Society archives show one of the hangars and the cover of the March 1944 base newsletter, The Bungee Bugle. For more information about Naval Air Station Glynco, visit the new World War II Home Front Museum at the Historic Coast Guard Station on St. Simons Island. We thank Leslie Faulkenberry, author of the Glynn County Airport Commission’s booklet Project Glynco (available online), for historical information used in this article.

Our monthly images on this page are from the vast archives of the Coastal Georgia Historical Society. The Society’s mission includes the “administration, restoration and maintenance of historic facilities and resources … preserved as a living part of the historical and cultural foundations of our coastal community.” Society facilities include the St. Simons Lighthouse and Museum, the A.W. Jones Heritage Center, and the World War II Home Front Museum at the Historic Coast Guard Station.
