PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Boomer Sooner!

L

et me start out by saying Happy New Year! Hopefully 2018 will start out with a big win in the Rose Bowl for the Dawgs, followed up with a trip to Atlanta for the National Championship game! It has been 37 years since UGA played in and won a National Championship. I was a freshman at the University of Georgia back in 1980 when we beat Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day 1981 to be crowned National Champions. I love to tell people that from my freshman year in 1980 I didn’t see the Dawgs lose at home until the LAST game of my senior year when Auburn beat us 13-7. That’s just another reason I will always hate Auburn! This year, I’ll be in Pasadena for the Rose Bowl when my Bulldawgs meet The University of Oklahoma Sooners for a chance to play in the National Championship game. This is the first ever match-up between the two teams and it takes on a special meaning for me. Both of my parents were born and raised in Oklahoma and graduated from The University of Oklahoma, a.k.a. OU. I grew up a big OU fan. As a kid, I wore OU football t-shirts while my buddies all wore UGA shirts. As a senior at Glynn Academy, I applied to four schools: OU, Chapel Hill, Vanderbilt and UGA. Chapel Hill and Vanderbilt quickly let me know I was barking up the wrong tree, so to speak, so it came down to OU and UGA. Unlike today, it wasn’t quite as difficult to get into UGA. Looking back, I can’t remember exactly why I decided not to go OU. I knew I wanted to major in journalism and UGA had an excellent journalism school, so maybe that

10

played into the equation. That, plus the fact that my sister was attending Vanderbilt at the time, which I’m sure was a considerable financial obligation for my folks. In fact, my mom said that when she and my dad received the first tuition bill from UGA for me, they thought it was missing a comma because it was so cheap compared to Vandy! There’s something to be said for staying in state! My sister married a Bulldawg, and since the two teams have never played each other, as a family we have never been forced to choose sides when it comes to OU vs. UGA. When it was announced that we would be playing OU, my mom texted me to say that since 1980 she has ALWAYS pulled for the Dawgs, but will of course be pulling for OU come New Year’s Day 2018. The people of Oklahoma love their football as much as we do here in Southeast Georgia! I’m planning on meeting up with some of my cousins at the Rose Bowl, and I’ll be thinking of my favorite “aunt” Joanie Fox, who was a huge OU fan. She attended OU from 1953-1957 and never saw her Sooners lose during her entire time in college! At the end of her funeral a few years back, as a tribute to her, the entire congregation sang the Sooners fight song. So, Joanie, this one’s for you: Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner Boomer Sooner, OK U I’m a Sooner born and Sooner bred And when I die, I’ll be Sooner dead Rah Oklahoma, Rah Oklahoma Rah Oklahoma, OK U!

aughter really is the best medicine! While this section focuses mainly on medical and physical treatments, we believe that keeping a positive attitude and a sense of humor is just as important to your health. Dr. Gulshan Seth of University of Arizona’s Center for Integrative Medicine explained, “Laughter activates the body’s natural relaxation response. It’s like internal jogging, providing a good massage to all internal organs while also toning abdominal muscles.” The constriction of muscles that occurs when you laugh increases blood flow and oxygenation, thus stimulating the heart and lungs, triggering the release of potent endorphins. These feel-good chemicals created by our bodies make us feel both physically and emotionally relaxed, and induce euphoria. Science has proven that laughter reduces stress, aids healing, fosters closer interpersonal bonds, and promotes a general feeling of well-being. Knowing that, we prescribe a visit to the Saint Simons Storytelling Festival at Epworth by the Sea in February to receive a healthy dose of hilarity. Storytellers have a penchant for humor, and this year’s featured speakers are no strangers to making audiences laugh. Kevin Kling has been dubbed a “lightning struck, freight train hopping, hilarious fel-

low” and anyone who has ever seen Andy Offut Irwin knows that “equal parts mischievous school boy and the Marx Brothers, peppered with a touch of the Southern balladeer” is an apt description indeed. What does Irwin say about Kim Wietkamp, a new speaker at the festival this year? “When she begins, you’ll laugh at her. Then, you’ll laugh at her characters. Then you’ll turn around and care about her characters and root for them. And then she’ll sing, and you’ll say, ‘where did that come from?’ That milk and honey voice.” Donald Davis, the “Dean of Storytelling,” who returns again this year to round out the festival lineup, has been praised by the New York Times: “His stories often left listeners limp with laughter at the same time they struggled with a lump in their throat.” Between these four creative individuals, they have been featured on NPR, received recognition and numerous awards both in storytelling and in the arts, recorded albums, written books, and made appearances worldwide. When it comes to the medicine of laughter, they aren’t just doctors, they are specialists! These incredibly talented tale spinners and humorists will provide hours of entertainment in group and individual sessions on Saturday and Sunday, February 17-18 at the beautiful Gascoigne Bluff setting of Epworth by the Sea. THE TOP QUESTIONS YOU SHOULD ASK Before Considering Dental Implant Surgery

T

he team at Coastal Oral Surgery knows that many people dislike going to the doctor’s office; however, they strongly believe that they can make it a pleasant experience for you. Because Dr. Capes and his staff see you as a person, and not as a Jeff O. Capes, DMD, MD

Capes training and experience that then allows him to treat you properly and successfully. From simple crowns to complete teeth replacement, dental implants are changing the way people live. Dental implants allow people who are missing teeth to regain the ability to eat normally and have the confidence that their teeth appear natural and their normal facial contours will be preserved. If you are considering dental implants, Dr. Capes says there are some key questions you should ask before proceeding.

1

First and foremost, who will be performing your surgery, what is their training, and do they live where you are being treated.

procedure, they aim to do everything they can to take care of you and make a positive difference in both your overall dental health and your life. Jeff O. Capes, DMD, MD, has the rare distinction of having both a Doctorate in Dentistry and a Doctorate in Medicine. He is licensed in Georgia to practice both dentistry and medicine. You may ask why he has trained so hard and so long? Surgery is a complex process. You see, it is not about only performing a procedure, it is about taking care of you as a whole. So many different factors determine what procedure will be right for you. It is Dr. 18

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

At Coastal Oral Surgery, Dr. Capes will be performing all of your surgical care. While studying at Case Western Reserve University, Dr. Capes trained under Dr. Charles Babbush, one of the early pioneers in implant dentistry. This opportunity provided him with a wealth of knowledge, training, and experience that gave him a solid foundation in implant dentistry. He also completed one year of general surgery. However, the learning didn’t stop there! Dr. Capes continues to participate in national meetings, study clubs, and various learning opportunities to make sure his practice is up to date and current on procedures and technolo-

gies to provide you with the best care. Lastly, and most importantly, Dr. Capes lives locally and is always available to take care of you after your procedure. For further peace of mind, he will even provide you with his cell phone number after your appointment. Don’t let a traveling doctor complete your surgery and then be unavailable should an issue arise.

2

How many implants has the doctor placed? Do they do it every day? In what environment?

You’ll want to consider the doctor’s experience doing implant surgery, as well as the setting in which the surgery takes place. Dr. Capes placed his first implant in 1993 and since that time he has placed over 12,000 implants. He and his team at Coastal Oral Surgery place dental implants every single day of the week. The office has a dedicated area with hospital-style operating rooms for your procedure. Dr. Capes and his staff feel that experience, a state of the art facility, and personalized care are what you deserve.

3

Is the person performing your procedure capable of handling any issue that may arise during or after your procedure?

The goal at Coastal Oral Surgery is that everything goes perfectly during and after

your surgical procedure. However, Dr. Capes and his staff understand through experience that there can be deviations in procedures. With Dr. Capes’ training you can rest assured that he can handle any issue that may arise. Your care at Coastal Oral Surgery never ends with the procedure, Dr. Capes is always available for you throughout your healing process.

FREEZE OUT the Fat

D

o you feel like that no matter how healthy and low-fat your diet and no matter how much you exercise, there are still areas of your body that stubbornly hold fat? Let 2018 be the year you finally get rid of that unwanted fat permanently. DiPreta Dermatology invites you to celebrate the New Year by taking advantage of their January CoolSculpting special and welcoming a new, more confident, you. There’s a difference between losing weight and losing fat. After dieting and weight loss, fat cells get smaller, but do not decrease in number. CoolSculpting takes advantage of the fact that fat cells freeze at higher temperatures than the tissues that surround them. By delivering precisely controlled cooling, CoolSculpting gently and specifically targets the fat cells underneath the skin, causing them to crystalize and die – actually reducing the number of fat cells in treated areas by 20-25%. There is no surgery required, and you have no down time. Over time, your body naturally processes the fat and eliminates the dead cells entirely, so they don’t migrate to other parts of the body, and leaves you with the more sculptured physique you desire. This FDA-cleared procedure provides proven results that are noticeable and

lasting, so you’ll look and feel great. While you may not weigh less after treatment, your body will in fact appear thinner. Getting rid of the stubborn fat bulges also means your clothes will fit better, feel better, and look better, making for a happier, more confident you! CoolSculpting isn’t just for body shaping either. This non-invasive treatment is an excellent way to reduce fat under the chin and contour the neck. Just think, you can get rid of that double chin without the need for surgery! Results in this area can often be achieved in just one or two visits. Freeze away those fatty deposits under your chin that make you look years older than you are and be happy with what you see in the mirror from every angle! Whether you’d like to target one specific problem area or reshape your body, DiPreta Dermatology’s CoolSculpting specialists can help you create an individualized treatment plan tailored to your body, your goals, and your budget. During the month of January, patients can purchase one cycle of CoolSculpting and receive the second cycle for half price. Now is your chance to welcome a slimmer you in

the New Year. To schedule your free consultation, contact DiPreta Dermatology and allow a member of their friendly staff to schedule your appointment with a CoolSculpting specialist. DiPreta Dermatology, the ones you know and trust. They offer a full range of comprehensive general dermatologic services for children and adults, including Mohs Surgery and Skin Cancer care at their new state-of-the-art surgical center in Brunswick. olden Isles Olive Oil understands and recognizes that eating for a healthier lifestyle doesn’t need to be boring. Adopting an improved new you can be easy and delicious. Take control of your health while enjoying yourself along the way. By making a few simple lifestyle adjustments and adopting a Mediterranean approach to your diet, you can learn to makeover your meals and reap the health benefits. It is fuel for your body. You will feel better, have more energy and live longer. The Mediterranean Diet has long been supported by the medical community as the world’s healthiest diet. Research shows that those that follow a Mediterranean style diet have about a 20 percent increased chance of living longer compared with their non-Mediterranean-eating counterparts. This means in practice that older people who eat a Mediterranean diet live an estimated 2-3 years longer than those who don’t. This lifestyle features fish and poultry, lean sources of protein over red meat. Red wine is consumed regularly but in moderate amounts. It is abundant in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and Extra Virgin Olive Oil. A cornerstone of this diet is the intake of Extra Virgin Olive Oil. People in the Mediterranean consume an average of 20 liters of olive oil a year. In contrast the average American will consume +/- 1 liter per year.

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

Extra Virgin Olive Oil is loaded with health benefits. It contains the highest level of antioxidant polyphenols and oleic acid. It is rich in monounsaturated fats. Monounsaturated fats are good for your brain and heart. People who use high-quality, extra-virgin olive oil in place of other fats have lower rates of heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, cancer, and asthma. Additionally, according to the FDA, consuming about two tablespoons of olive oil daily may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Who wouldn’t want the benefits of all that? If the idea of overhauling your entire way of shopping and eating seems daunting, start small. Wiping the slate entirely clean may not be necessary. Instead, take steps toward eating more in the Mediterranean-style. Choose a strategy and make it a habit. First, swap oils. Replacing hydrogenated or saturated fats from animal products with extravirgin olive oil when possible can help many Americans take the right steps toward a healthier life and heart. Take advantage of low-calorie add-ins and creative options to keep things from getting stagnant. With over 60 flavors of fused and infused Extra Virgin Olive Oils and beautifully aged Balsamic, Golden Isles Olive Oil offers plenty of variety and experimentation. A perfect pairing awaits for every dish.

Use our olive oil in homemade salad dressings and vinaigrettes. We use it as wonderful marinades for our protein. Drizzle it on finished dishes like fish or chicken to boost flavor. We carry a vegan, non-GMO and non-dairy Butter Olive Oil. Swap butter for our olive oil sprinkled over roasted vegetables, mixed with mashed potatoes, pasta, and more. Have fun with it. In addition to our oils and balsamic, we offer a wide selection of healthy gourmet products. Come on in and taste the difference. Cheers to a healthier new you!

Mixing Business with Pleasure

W

ho says you can’t mix business with pleasure?! When it comes to work and travel, that might be just the right combination. LifeStyleSandbox.com gives us a glimpse into the new travel trend being led by savvy business travelers, Bleisure: blending business and leisure. It can be tough for anyone to find the time for a vacation. If you are focusing on building a career or working to get a new business off the ground, making time for a break may seem nearly impossible. However, there are some savvy trend setters that are doing just that. According to a FoundersCard survey, many entrepreneurs are extending business trips to Rachel Berg, Founder Lifestyle Sandbox make time for some leisure. FoundersCard (a membership community for founders of start-ups and senior executives) randomly selected 334 of its 20,000 members to find out how affluent business executives planned to spend their downtime in 2017. 81% of respondents said they had taken trips in the past that combined business and leisure. 51% said that they planned to add leisure to a business trip in 2017. Additionally, 23% of respondents said they planned to travel specifically for a change of scenery while working, which FoundersCard calls a “workcation.” This trend isn’t limited to career driven executives or entrepreneurs. The rise of virtual tools

makes it easier for everyone to manage personal and professional obligations remotely. It is now much easier to put a couple of days of personal travel around a business trip. So many professionals are opting to use this approach that the travel industry has given the phenomenon a name: “bleisure.”

A recent study by Expedia Media Solutions found that 43% of all business trips, both international and domestic, are extended to include leisure activity. This is especially common with people who are traveling to another country for work and considering the expense and time commitment of international flights. According to the Bleisure Report by Bridgestreet Global Hospitality, more than half of those who extended a business trip brought family members or a significant other with them. This trend is especially relevant for Americans, since the Bureau of Labor reports that the average employee receives only 8 vacation days in the first year of work. One of the biggest time investments employees make on their vacation is the time it takes to get to the destination. It can sometimes take a full vacation day just for travel. By tacking one or two days to the end of a business trip, travelers avoid taking the precious time off necessary for a traditional vacation scenario. If the company is already paying for the plane ticket, the traveler only needs to pay out of pocket for part of the expense of taking the vacation days. The economics of this actually works for companies. In a Booking.com survey they found 30% of employees would even accept a lower paid job if it meant they could travel for work. Companies are finding bleisure travel can be

a recruiting and retention tool for top talent. This trend extends to mainstream employees. GBTA (Global Business Travel Association Foundation) reported in their Bleisure Study that 37% of North American business travelers extended a work trip into a leisure vacation in 2017. 42% hold middle management positions and have children at home. 44% brought someone for the leisure portion of the trip.

lifestylesandbox.com At the Lifestyle Sandbox on St. Simons Island, bleisure travelers can find a place for a workcation. Wall size white boards and smart TVs for business brainstorming and a beach for barefoot walking just outside the door. EXCELLENCE in Health & Fitness

W

hen the Dineen family purchased Charter Health Club 17 years ago, they changed the name of the game for local health and fitness. Becoming the new St. Simons Health and Fitness Club was no easy task – renovations to the facility were the priority and updating the building came first. Continuous improvements have been made over the years in order to keep up with the changes in the industry. The impressive list of renovations to the facility include recent overhauls of the weight rooms and a full expansion of the yoga studios and programming– rebranding as The Club. “Wow. What can I say? I’ve been coming here since the days that this place was called The Klubhaus. I met my wife here and I just love

it. This is my family away from my family,” shares Ken Amiano, original member. Mary, his wife, is one of the original group swim instructors; they met at the club in 1986 and the rest is history. The Club is all about family. Members of the staff and members of the facility quickly become extended members of The Club’s family – which isn’t small by the way. With thousands of members, The Club continues to grow – while maintaining its charm of a small island family-run business. “One of my favorite things about this place is the fact that we are a great community within our Golden Isles community,” shares Catherine Fleming, Director of Membership.

The focus on family fitness has driven many of the improvements for the facility. The Cub’s Club is a dedicated area for childcare, with staff certified in children’s CPR and separate areas

for infants and older children, so your kids will be entertained safely while you work out or take classes. Dale Tankersley manages the childcare facility and is truly the heart and soul of that program. Hundreds of kids have grown up with Ms. Dale over the years and life comes full circle when they come back with kids of their own. She has been a part of The Club family for over 28 years now. In contrast, something new to The Club, is the expansion of the yoga classes with The Clouds Yoga Studio. The entire yoga floor was renovated this year, giving The Clouds more than 4,000 square feet of dedicated space. The Clouds also offers a separate hot yoga studio and pilates studio. More than 40 classes are offered each week, including prenatal yoga. Numerous yoga workshops are scheduled for 2018, including a teacher training workshop in partnership with the Amrit yoga institute for a 200-hour yoga alliance certification.

Ray Arens, longtime member shares, “I’ve been a member here for 17 years and I can’t imagine my life without this health club. It keeps me going and I can truly say that this club is responsible for my good health.”

Connie Brogan, Director of Yoga Programming for The Clouds Studio is pleased with how much the yoga practice has grown. “We have made The Clouds the premier place to practice in the southeastern part of Georgia. With classes that appeal to a range of ages, our yoga family is expanding,” shares Connie. “There truly is something for everyone.” There are memberships to suit everybody including Corporate memberships. The Club is located at 2929 Demere Road on St. Simons Island and is open 7 days a week. For more information, call 912.638.5600 or visit theclubssi.com.

So what do Endodontists do? You probably know that Endodontists perform root canal treatments, but you might not know that they also handle many other Endodontic treatments and surgeries, like treating traumatic dental injuries and placing dental implants. An Endodontist’s primary goal is to save your natural teeth. They’ll work to do that whenever possible; however, they will consider all treatment options for your individual situation to determine the best course of action for you. Where a general dentist may only perform a couple root canal treatments a week, an Endodontist’s practice is limited solely to Endodontic treatments, and he or she generally performs an average of 25 or more root canal treatments a week. You’ll receive the best outcome from such specialized treatment, and this generally also means faster healing. Who doesn’t want that?! To make sure you receive the benefits of that specialized care, dentists and Endodontists often work together so that each specific issue relating to your teeth is handled by the member of your dental team best equipped or trained to handle it.

BUILD A LIFE of Recovery

D

epression is a serious and wellrecognized mental health problem that can interfere with all aspects of a person life. Fortunately, there are many evidenced based effective treatments to help people regain full functioning and satisfaction in their lives. Anxiety is the most common mental health problem in the U.S., but is not as easily recognized. Seth Eisenberg, M.D. So many people suffer from anxiety and stress disorders without getting appropriate diagnoses and treatment. Depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorders can also contribute to overuse of alcohol and drugs as individuals with these problems try to find a way to feel better. But the use of alcohol and other drugs frequently makes people’s lives worse. Not only do they have a profoundly negative impact on the mental, physical, and spiritual well-being of the individual who is suffering directly from their detrimental effects, but they also have an indirect adverse impact on surrounding families, workplaces, and society in general. Addiction to opioid substances, such as pain pills and heroin is now recognized as a national crisis and affects young people at an ever-increasing frequency. Overdose from these drugs exceeds deaths from automobile accidents and many other causes of death.

Seth Eisenberg, M.D. and Douglas Cooper M.D. are pleased to introduce the coveryMD psychiatric practice, where they are able to provide medication and counseling for these complicated problems, including medication-assisted treatment (MAT) with buprenorphine and naltrexone for pain pill and heroin addiction. Both Dr. Eisenberg and Dr. Cooper are experienced in the treatment Douglas Cooper, M.D. of behavioral health medical disorders, but the main focus of their practice is on building a life of recovery. They help people and families develop the coping skills to manage everyday life stress, as well as more serious mood and anxiety disorders.

e

Both doctors are also able to provide treatment for PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), another common and mental health problem. Pursuant to his family history of military service, along with his stint as the Director of Mental Health for New York City’s two veterans residential treatment (PTSD/Chemical Dependency) programs, Dr. Cooper has had an enduring close personal connection with the VA (Veterans Association) population, working to aid those who have served to overcome difficult issues related to past military duty. In addition, Dr. Eisenberg and Dr. Cooper both have extensive experience working with adolescents

and believe that addressing mental health problems in young people, and the family of origin, is critical to prevent serious life difficulties in adulthood. Dr. Eisenberg and Dr. Cooper believe that recovery from mental health and addiction problems is possible for everyone, and that there are many paths that can be followed to get there. Their practice framework is “All Recovery, All the Time.” Everyone wants to feel happy, fulfilled, and proud of how they live their life, and to have a meaningful connection to others. This isn’t easy in the modern world, but can be more and more attainable every day. The doctors specialize in anxiety, mood and substance use disorders, and provide medication assisted treatment, counseling, recovery support, and referrals for additional needs. They endorse the importance of treatment that encompasses mind, body, and spirit to achieve personal realization, and strive to help patients work to overcome barriers to recovery and to create a life that supports health and wellness. MAKE 2018 Your Beach Year

L

et Georgia Coast Surgical and Power Spa help you work toward obtaining that beach body you’ve always wanted in the New Year! Georgia Coast Surgical is the exclusive local provider of both the “Fire” and “Ice” non-surgical body sculpting techniques, which include CoolSculpting, Vanquish ME, Flex HD, and Cellutone. These techniques require no surgery, anesthesia, or needles. There is no down time, so you can get a treatment and return to your usual activities without any limitations.

Unlike lasers, techniques used at Georgia Coast Surgical destroy many of the fat cells in targeted areas so that they are no longer present to store fat. The fatty acids in these cells are used by the body as fuel, the ketone part of fat is excreted, and the other cell components are naturally disposed of through by the body. This results in the decrease in size of pockets of fat, thus minimizing the size of fatty bulges. Human beings don’t make new fat cells after adolescence, so no new cells can form in the treated area to store fat. However, we advise our patients to not gain

weight after their treatments, since weight gain will make any improvements less noticeable. A patient’s weight is taken at each visit, in order to monitor progress and help them obtain their best results. In the “Fire” stage of treatment, the Vanquish ME machine treats large volumes of fat by radiofrequency ablation, which heats the fat cells to 46 degrees Centigrade. The treatment wand doesn’t even touch the patient. With four weekly 45-minute treatments, (continues)

some patients see a reduction in their waist circumference of one to four inches. Vanquish ME can be performed on the front of the abdomen and then on the back, along with the Cellutone device--the “Silhouette” process-to deliver even more amazing results. The Flex HD attachment can also be used to treat thigh fat (in women) and upper arm fatty deposits. During the “Ice” stage, two CoolSculpting machines, which cool fat in the treatment area to approximately -14 degrees Centigrade, are utilized to sculpt smaller fatty bulges to refine the results of Vanquish treatments. Having two machines means that a patient can be treated to transformation twice as fast as they could be treated with only one machine. Four staff members are graduates of CoolSculpting University and are experienced in this treatment. Currently there are at least nine different body areas which can be treated by CoolSculpting: the inner and outer thighs, fat around the abdomen on the front and back of the body in several different areas (including “bra fat”), upper arms, and the fatty pocket under the chin. There are multiple sizes of applicators to conform to areas of concern in most patients. Treatments range from 35-75 minutes depending on areas treated and applicators used. There are some areas where two treatments are recommended from the start, and there are times when treating the same area two or three times will be required to get the desired results. After either of these treatments, results can be enhanced by applying the Cellutone device. This device uses sound wave pulses to further pulverize fat cells, and increases blood flow and lymphatic drainage in the treated area as well. The Cellutone device can also be used as a stand-alone treatment for cellulite.

All of these technologies are FDA approved and treatments are done by the trained staff at Georgia Coast Surgical, the only practice in this area to offer these three different treatment options in one place. Consultations can be scheduled and are always free. A sequence of treatment will be recommended that is designed you the best results. This may mean that you would get a package of treatments which include all of the different technologies. Prices vary according to what the patient wants to accomplish, and an estimate can be provided after your consultation. Additionally, Georgia Coast Surgical can help guide you toward financing your treatments. “You deserve it all, so get it all done!” Visit georgiacoastsurgical.com for more information about the practice and services offered, or call Georgia Coast Surgical and Power Spa at 912.264.9724 and get a head start on your beach body while it’s still winter. You’ll be glad you did!

“Music can heal the wounds which medicine cannot touch.”

J

MUSIC Rx

- Debeasish Mridha

ust as laughter is good for your health, music too has positive effects on your well-being that are supported by science. It’s good for your brain, your body, and your state of mind. And it all begins when we are just babes. Lullabies are universal and date back several thousand years. Mothers through the ages from across the world have been singing lullabies to calm children and ease them to sleep. Studies have found that while the words and themes of lullabies may vary, the same tones and shared patterns of rhythms are used. And babies respond. Research shows that infants remained calm twice as long when listening to a children’s song (even an unfamiliar one) than they do when the same words are merely spoken. Live singing was also found to be more effective than recorded song. Lullabies aren’t just beneficial to the child either; they also have a soothing effect on the adults doing the singing and are helpful in forging stronger bonds between caregiver and child. Maybe it’s this early interaction that causes music to stimulate such widespread regions of both sides of our brains. Music engages not just the auditory areas of our brain, but areas that deal with motor and limbic (relating to emotions) function too. Ample research over the years has demonstrated that music enhances reading, literacy, math, and other reasoning skills. There’s also evidence that listening to relaxing music improves concentration for all ages. Listening to instrumental music has been shown to improve memory performance and facilitate the recall of information. And learn34

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

ing music is an even more powerful tool for the brain than just listening. Children who are taught music develop a better memory than children who do not receive musical training. Music also heals the body. It can help reduce the sensation of pain and distress associated with chronic pain. Hospitals are increasingly using music therapy to complement the use of anesthesia during surgery, to reduce the need for medication during childbirth, and to decrease post-operative pain. Music has been shown to help reduce blood pressure, boost immunity, decrease levels of stressrelated cortisol, promote post-stroke recovery, normalize heart rate, and even (perhaps surprisingly) help people suffering from chronic headaches, migraine, and early stages of tinnitus. A 2014 study has revealed that there’s even a particular sonata by Mozart that has an anti-seizure effect on children with epilepsy. Powerful medicine indeed!

Just as music soothes the savage beast, it can soothe the soul as well. Bright, cheerful, upbeat music is known to chase away the blues, reduce negative emotions, and calm anxiety. Slow, quiet classical music reduces stress for all ages and often induces sleep. Research has shown that listening to just 45 minutes of relaxing music before bed can make for a more restful night and help with insomnia. Bach, especially, has been found to aid in sleep, muscle relaxation, and slowing heart and respiratory rates. On the other hand, bouncy pop, hard-hitting rock, and upbeat dance tracks, can energize you and help you fight fatigue, making it a helpful pick-meup for long runs and workout sessions or during monotonous drives or work shifts. And speaking of work, studies have also established that music in the workplace improves productivity. So, cue up your favorite playlists, or dust off some vintage vinyl, and let the music play on. It’s good for your body, mind, and soul.

Antiques Show to Host Award-Winning Speakers

A

t the 29th annual Thomasville Antiques Show on February 22-25, attendees will have the chance to learn from four award-winning design authorities with international reputations: Bobby McAlpine, Ashley Woodson Bailey, Eddie Ross, and Beth Webb. The Thomasville Antiques Show Foundation (TASF) raises funds annually for non-profit organizations focused on children’s programs in Thomasville, Thomas County and the surrounding areas. Designer, architect, author, and entrepreneur Bobby McAlpine envisions home as a timeless, graceful and emotionally evocative place. Since 1983, when he founded his firm, he has expressed these ideals in an array of traditional styles and regional vernaculars for clients all over the world. Today, known simply as McALPINE, the firm embraces a family of architects and interior designers with offices in Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia and New York. They have been listed on Architectural Digest’s AD100 and Elle Décor’s A-List. Bobby’s popular furniture line, McAlpine Home, is available nationwide. After a harrowing car accident left this highprofile florist bedridden, Ashley Woodson Bailey channeled her love of flowers into a healing new venture. A self-taught photographer, Ashley’s signature florography art prints launched in 2014, and her brand naturally expanded to include wallpaper, fabrics and limited-edition products. Woodson’s work has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, Luxe, Domino, Atlanta magazine, Cobb Life, and Savannah Magazine.

Recognized by design aficionados for his inventive approach to high-style decorating and entertaining on a budget, Eddie Ross is known for re-imagining the aesthetic possibilities in secondhand finds and imbuing them with a chic and colorful sophistication. Ross has worked as a design, decorating and food editor for House Beautiful, Martha Stewart Living and the Food Network. A trained chef from the Culinary Institute of America, Ross has styled parties featured in House Beautiful, Southern Living and InStyle. His design work has been published in Vanity Fair, Country Living and The New York Times. He has also appeared in Bravo’s interior design competition series “Top Design.” Ross lectures widely on the living arts, from food and flowers to decorating, gardening, and entertaining. Through her sensory-driven design approach, Beth Webb creates what she calls style sanctuaries – natural compositions designed to provide lasting and transformative physical beauty. With a Master’s degree from Sotheby’s in London, Webb began her career as an art dealer. Today, as founder and Creative Director of Atlanta-based Beth Webb Interiors, she has completed projects throughout the Southeast, as well as in California, Connecticut, Michigan, the Bahamas and Costa Rica. Webb’s work is often featured in Elle Décor, Veranda, House Beautiful, s and Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles and has been included in books such as Veranda, The Art of Outdoor Living, and Creating Home: Design for Living.

a dream come true when we moved to St. Simons Island to raise our family. After looking from South Carolina to the Florida Coast, we could not find a better community to live and raise our family. A Detroit Banker’s Winter Retreat

T

he January 21, 1927 issue of the Brunswick Pilot announced that Detroit banker Eugene Lewis had purchased Hamilton Plantation on the Frederica River as his winter home. Lewis’ interest in Coastal Georgia can be traced to Detroit’s automobile industry. Prior to becoming a banker, Lewis had been an organizer of the Timken-Detroit Axle Company. Through this connection to early automobile manufacturing, he and Howard Coffin of Hudson Motor Company had become friends. Coffin, founder of Sea Island Company and The Cloister, also bought most of Sapelo Island in 1912, and Lewis was a frequent guest there. When Coffin began acquiring property on St. Simons and Sea Island, Lewis served as his financial advisor. According to Harold Martin’s history of Sea Island, This Happy Isle, it was Lewis, an avid golfer, who urged Coffin to create a golf club at Retreat Plantation on St. Simons Island. Not a golfer himself, Coffin asked Lewis to supervise construction of the course for Sea Island Company, beginning in 1926.

The Brunswick Pilot article also included an abbreviated history of Hamilton Plantation. Scotsman James Hamilton, business partner of John Couper of Cannon’s Point, owned the property in the first part of the 19th century and cultivated sea island cotton. After the Civil War, the plantation became the site of a prosperous lumber mill, owned by the Dodge family of New York, which later merged with the Hilton Lumber Company of Darien, Georgia. After the mill closed early in the 20th century, a syndicate of railroad men bought the property, and then sold it to E.C. McLean of Florida and C.G. Justice of Pennsylvania, who established a successful commercial farm. When Lewis acquired the 400-acre property in 1927, 150 acres were cultivated in lettuce and peppers. The article concluded with a prediction that Lewis’ winter home would be “made into one of the most magnificent estates in the South.” Lewis and his wife Margaret spent the next decade restoring, improving, and

beautifying their property. They continued commercial farming until 1937, when the Depression brought an end to the enterprise. During the years just before World War II, Lewis operated a dairy, which closed when the labor force went to war. In the late 1940s, Lewis sold the property to Sea Island Company, which then sold 43.5 acres at a much reduced price to the

Methodist Church for a conference center. Epworth-by-the-Sea opened in 1950. Sea Island Company later donated an additional 100 acres to the center. This month’s images show Eugene Lewis in his office at Hamilton Plantation and the gardens he and his wife Margaret created next to their home.
