PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Make July Digital Detox Month

W

hether you know it or not, you’ve been phubbed. “Phubbing” is snubbing someone by looking at your phone rather than at the person who’s talking to you. I’m guilty of phubbing, especially during EIL production. And the fact that there’s a word for this makes me think that maybe our digital habits have gotten a little out of hand. Georgia recently passed a new law that makes it illegal to text on a cell phone while driving. That is the general description of the law. Actually, it is not a “new” law, but the expansion of an already existing law that makes it illegal to engage in any action that distracts the driver from the safe operation of a motor vehicle. The July 1 law now reads that one can be convicted under this statute “based upon the use of a mobile telephone for writing, sending, or reading a text-based message or other purpose unrelated to engaging in spoken communication.” So, basically, it is now illegal in Georgia to use a cell phone while driving for any purpose other than making or receiving phone calls, and even that must be done in a hands-free manner because the law also prohibits “holding or supporting with any part of the body” your wireless phone or other electronic devices. If texting and driving wasn’t a bad enough idea before, it is now.

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

Maybe what we all need is a digital detox. And July on St. Simons Island is the perfect time and place! A real digital detox means turning off your phones, tablets, and computers for at least 24 hours. If that seems totally overwhelming, it’s okay to take baby steps. Start by turning your phone off during lunch. Smartphone withdrawal is real, and it has actual physiological effects. Think how anxious you get when you are driving and realize you left your phone

at home by accident. Do you shrug it off or turn back and drive home because you are afraid you’ll miss something on your Facebook feed? Here are a handful of great reasons to go on a digital detox. 1) It will cure your insomnia. The blue light emitted by all those screens can mess up your sleep cycle. 2) You’ll be less stressed. Social media can stress you out. The stress is more than just unpleasant, it’s bad for your health. 3) You’ll kick your addiction. For some people, dependence on their smartphone isn’t just a bad habit; it’s an addiction. People can get so hooked on their smartphone that just the idea of not having it can cause anxiety. 4) You’ll get more exercise. Use that free time you would have spent on social media to take a walk, jog or bike around the island. 5) You’ll increase your attention span. A study conducted by Microsoft found that goldfish now have an attention span longer than humans do. The cause? Too much media too often and too quickly. In fact, research suggests that some digital-free downtime may increase span as much as 50 percent. When you combine the improved mood, better sleep, additional time, sharper focus, and physical well-being that come with undertaking a digital detox, maybe you’ll find that in July you’ll become the “BEST OF” YOU!

Southern Sweet Tea:

THE RULES

Yes, if you’re doing it like a true Southerner, there are rules for making sweet tea. 1. No powdered stuff. Use real tea in tea bags. Whether you use the Southerner’s preferred choice of Luzianne tea bags, Lipton, Tetley, or another brand is purely a matter of personal taste.. Depending on the strength you prefer, use 6-8 single cup tea bags or 2-3 family style tea bags per gallon. 2. Don’t put the tea in the water before it boils. Wait for the water to reach a low boil, then remove it from the heat and place the tea bags in to steep for a minimum of 10-15 minutes. The longer you steep, the stronger the tea, but be aware that over-steeping makes for bitter tea. 3. Sweeten with real sugar. You can add your sugar directly to the hot steeped tea before adding water or you can mix a simple syrup and add that to the tea. For simple syrup, dissolve two or more cups of sugar in three cups of hot water for a gallon of tea and stir until clear. 4. Mix and cool appropriately. Pour steeped tea and simple syrup (or sugar and water) together in a clean pitcher. Stir and add enough water to make a full gallon. Taste test for sweetness, adding sugar if needed. Cover and let stand until room temperature. Don’t just add ice to warm tea and put in the refrigerator, because this can make cloudy tea that will sour quickly. It’s recommended by the CDC that tea be stored no longer than 8 hours. Serve chilled over ice, and garnished with lemon or mint, if desired.

PRIDE

It is a well-known fact that Southerners take pride in their culture and heritage. That pride shines extra bright here each year during Sea Island’s Southern Grown Festival. This fabulous foray into all things Southern will return on Friday, August 31 through Sunday, September 1 and anticipation is building already. This fourth annual commemoration of the distinctive culture of the South gives guests ample opportunity to taste, sip, learn about, and experience this region’s unique cuisine, craftsmanship, music, and tradition. Past years’ festival events have brought the very finest musical talent, culinary genius, and unparalleled art and craftsmanship to the grounds of our own storied pillar of Southern hospitality: Sea Island Resort. This year will be no different. Chef Kenny Gilbert and Gena Knox will be dishing up deliciousness. The musical entertainment for the weekend will be provided by Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors and NEEDTOBREATHE, two Southern bands who have amassed large and loyal followings. On Friday, the festivities begin at 7:00 p.m. on The Cloister’s Black Banks Terrace with the Garden & Gun Kick-off Dinner and a Show. This evening steeped in Southern tradition will feature the culinary stylings of guest chef Kenny Gilbert, prohibition-styled libations, and the fabulous music of Nashville-based band, Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors with the gorgeous setting of the Black Banks River as the evening’s backdrop. On Saturday, the Southern Grown Marketplace presented by Southeastern Wildlife Exposition will be open between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Artisan vendors celebrate nature and wildlife through fine art, education, and sport. Vendors include fine accessory makers Kingfisher Leatherworks, Hook n Hide, Brackish, clothiers Grady Ervin and Tom Beckbe, jewelry designers Christina Jervey and Mark Lexton, artists C. Ford Riley and Jane Ingols, among many other unique Southern artisans and purveyors. It’s the “How to be a Southerner” workshop sessions taking place between 10:00 a.m and 2:00 p.m. on Saturday that Southern Grown Festival organizer Sandra Porter was most excited to tell us about as an added element of fun this year. These workshops and demonstration sessions could be considered a primer on the finer points of being a Southerner. They touch on the very keystones of Southern culture: bow ties and booze, hounds and hospitality, sporting and Southern cooking. This is your chance to learn Southern heritage and culture from the best. At the time of print, the planned Sea Island and Garden & Gun inspired sessions included the following: “A Culinary Show and Tell with Chef Kenny Gilbert” will feature the talents of former Sea Island chef and Top Chef season seven contestant Kenny Gilbert. Although he was born and raised in suburban Cleveland and received his degree in culinary arts from The Pennsylvania Culinary Institute, Chef Gilbert has a passion for the cuisine of the Deep South. He’s no stranger to Sea Island or the Southern Grown Festival, having showcased his skills at the Meat & 3 Dinner in 2016. In his session, you’ll be able to learn how to create one of his favorite recipes and have ample opportunity to sample and savor the flavors as well. Sea Island’s star mixologist, Nic Wallace, one of the highest ranked bartenders in the United States will teach you how to “Pour the Perfect Bloody Mary.” A classic libation to kick-off 34

Flip-flops for men are a no-no. “That’s why there are Sperrys.”

Last, but not least, Sea Island’s newly named fulltime historian, Wheeler Bryan, Jr., the quintessential Southern gentleman will demonstrate “How to Tie a Bow Tie and Other Southern Mannerisms.” A Southern style guide and pointer on proper etiquette for gentlemen, this workshop promises to touch on those little details that add the perfect polish. We had a chance to chat with Wheeler and asked if he could share some tips with us without giving away what was under his hat for the presentation. Wheeler’s smooth reply: “Every good Southern gentleman knows that no hats should be worn inside the house, so there’s nothing to keep under one.” He knows his game!

Another way to embrace your identity as a Southerner is through cooking traditional Southern fare. To this end, Sea Island is pleased to announce the release of their new cookbook Soul of the South to celebrate its 90th anniversary. Written by Sarah Anschutz Hunt, the cookbook is part of a two book set, with the companion being Spirit of the West, celebrating The Broadmoor and its centennial anniversary. The cookbooks feature more than 50 recipes and traditions inspired by the distinct culture of each award-winning resort and also examine their rich histories as well. The Anschutz family has placed Sea Island and The Broadmoor into a 100-year trust to

preserve these uniquely American experiences for generations to come. In Soul of the South, Sarah shares her experiences visiting Sea Island and enjoying suppers overlooking the marshes on Rainbow Island. It is from these fond family memories and the celebrated kitchens of the resorts that the recipes for the cookbooks were compiled. Describing the resorts as treasured gathering places for families and friends, Hunt said, “I hope that these cookbooks inspire readers to celebrate time with their loved ones and rekindle fond memories of their times at these beloved resorts. “ The cookbook set can be purchased for $85 at Sea Island’s retail outlets and on the website at shop.seaisland.com. Sea Island has generously shared with us two of the classic recipes from the resort that are included in the cookbook, so you can add them to your recipe book of Southern staples. Flatter Yourself If styled correctly, stripes can be one of the most flattering prints. Ronne’s on Market Street owner, Ronne Lebow who has been dressing island locals and tourists for years agrees, stripes are both classic and always on trend. For the contemporary crowd, Ronne’s new arrivals that feature a stripe down the side of the leg have been a hot trend seen in name-brand fashion this summer for labels such as Chloé and Gucci. The look has come to the coast via these adorable two-piece sets. To complete the outfit, head next door to Shackleford and pick up a pair of Eileen Fisher platforms and a fun clutch. Femininity shows up again in the frilly tassel trend that has made its way onto nearly every item of clothing and accessory possible this season. Bright tassels or pom-poms make you want to give three cheers for summer with their enthusiastic nature. This light and fun white dress with tassel trim (see inset) at Ronne’s is no exception. It can be styled simply and elegantly for a casual, breezy look.

Easy Breezy Fabrics have been cool in more ways than one this season. Not only because of their moment of fame at Westminster Abbey, but literally, according to Merrill Edens, manager at Maggie’s Boutique, centrally located on Frederica Road. Their Lulu-B line is a favorite among customers for its easy-travel, little-wrinkle texture that can keep you cool even in the blazing months of July and August. The bright tints that Maggie’s has in stock pair perfectly with their most desired Krazy Larry pants that combine comfort and professionalism with a light fabric that breathes well in the island heat.

Mix it Up Although adding brand new styles and accessories to your closet is fun, they come at a price. Buying something that may not be right out of the warehouse but is still new to your own collection is just as exciting and much less expensive. At Mixed Nuts Consignment near Sal’s Neighborhood Pizzeria on Frederica Road, you can purchase Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Valentino and many more authentic name-brand items, a variety that is not offered anywhere else in the Golden Isles. Store owner Charlene Stahl said that they have seen an increased desire from customers for Chanel and Louis Vuitton bags this year as well as colorful beach coverups and of course, tassels. Many of the items available at Mixed Nuts come from boutiques near and far such as Highlands, North Carolina, Valdosta, and Augusta. By popular demand, Mixed Nuts now carries brand new pieces at a lower price such as Umgee and Current Air clothing brands. The girls at Mixed Nuts work hard to guarantee 100% authenticity in all items they sell. One thing their customers look for no matter the time of year is shoes. All sizes, brands and styles are always being updated for a broader selection.

A Pop of Color On the theme of bright colors, fun shoes are a great way to make a statement with a white dress or jeans. The orange sandal with its layered, multi-colored strap by Donald Pliner is fashioned in such a way that if summer was a shoe, this would be it. The classic Jack Rodgers sandal is an iconic islander shoe and looks beautiful on girls from two to 102. With the versatile shades of gold and brown, Jack Rogers can be worn as long as the weather allows. For some people, comfort always comes before style and while it may seem like it has to be a compromise, Martha Banister, owner of The Pampered Foot located on Frederica Road, said just the opposite. Her new Beautifeel line of shoes that take the freedom of a sandal and combine it with the comfort of a sneaker are perfect to complete a breezy summer look. Martha also sticks to lower heels and wedges when buying for the store to maximize comfort. I know I speak for all of us when I say that it is with thankful hearts that we welcome the dress with sneakers trend back into our wardrobes. It really is a dream come true for busy bees everywhere.

It’s All In the Details Simplicity is a common theme among local stylists this summer. Laura Latham, manager at the Tibi outlet also on Market Street shares some of the line’s keys to maintaining their unique combination of femininity and functionality. They are staying fresh by strategically placing cut-outs in every-day styles for an artistic flare on closet staples such as shell tops and classic blazers. Latham says their favorite way to style these funky threads is with their bright and edgy PVC belts. Adding a fun element to an everyday style, like a balloon or bell sleeve on a classic white blouse, is an area of expertise for Tibi. Another trend we can thank Tibi’s stylists for re-introducing to our wardrobes is the classic art of pleating. The versatility of the line’s pleated pieces allows them to be worn anywhere from a textured top at dinner to The Royal Wedding. Yes, that happened!

Sassy and Chic For those of you who value comfort more than what’s hot and what’s not, the dress and sneakers trend may be your best friend. Butler’s Stash on Market Street, has dresses that can be easy to accessorize and wear anywhere. They also have the summery whites with a little pom-pom flare and stripes that can be dressed up or down. The best part about a simple airy dress is that you can’t over-accessorize. Whether it be a chic sun hat or a pair of sassy earrings, Butler’s Stash has what it takes to personalize your look and take your ensemble to the next level.

WHEN CONSIDERING the latest patterns and colors, the best option for your own personal style is the one that gives you the most confidence. Ronne Lebow agrees, saying that fashion can truly change you and your outlook. That’s why they call it retail therapy, of course! Whether you’re looking for resort wear or everyday casual, these island trendsetters can help you find the most flattering fit in the most up-to-date styles. Our local business owners take pride in expertly outfitting residents and tourists alike, always keeping us au courant and chic. We encourage you to stop in the island’s boutiques and see what looks are best suited for you!

Fireworks & Family … It’s the most exciting time of the year, y’all!

Y

es, the fourth is with us. July fourth, that is. The time when we get to spurt whipped cream straight into our mouths, right out of the can, while we lovingly layer the berries in our red, white and blue trifles. Plans have been made. Beach towels are fluffed, packed and unpacked. Deep coolers are filled with ice and stocked full. The flags go up. The patriotism is shared and real. The unity of “us” is deeply felt. We, on this day especially, are one. Then there are the little things, the things that make it that much “realer.” Family ascends, personalities abound. Sunburns and scrabble games run hot and family is … well, family. Some of the most important lessons that I have learned have happened when every single one of us is stockpiled together over the fourth with nowhere else to go. It’s a small street. A cul-de-sac of life, per se. It goes around and around, but there’s no exit. You have no choice but to sit down at the dreaded picnic table, right smack down in the uncomfortable middle, break the bread and get over yourself.

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

For those of you who don’t know me, I grew up in Augusta, GA. For my whole life, until recently, fireworks were outlawed in Georgia. Lighting a Roman candle, just for fun, needed prior vetting and permission that would still not allow you access to outer space.

The spontaneity, okay, yes, the danger, the joy, and the jacked-up excitement of it all was thought to need a certain amount of control and legislation. Cool heads prevail, I guess? I’m not so sure. One of the “perks” of growing up in Augusta was that you could drive five minutes across the Savannah River and buy copious amounts of potassium nitrate and sulfur encapsulated into a tight tube. Then all you needed to do was light a match and have a lot of fun in your driveway. As children we believed that fireworks were the equivalent of life itself. If we could make something small and simple explode all over the sky, well then, the sky IS NOT the limit. It’s simply only the beginning. It’s just the starting point to something scary, but still something worth starting FROM, nevertheless. The essence of fire created a viable and productive, yet highly temperamental earth that powers through even today. We forget sometimes the stillness, the time when life was quiet and so very unassuming. But then we celebrate the innovation, the bigness, the child-like wonder of our progress and finding ways to relate to one another. The very thing I love about sitting or standing and watching, setting off, and enjoying this pyrotech-

by L a u ra Pa c ka rd

nic phenomenon is that it’s truly one of the purest ways we can all relate, no matter our age, religion, race or gender. It’s the absolute awe. The wow. The wonder. When you watch fireworks explode for the first time, it can be unsettling. Uncomfortable. Loud. The noise, the sheer power, the BANG of it all. It can be dangerous if directed in the wrong way. Your heart races and the adrenaline flows to the point that you put your hands over your ears. You may even look away. But, still, you cannot. Because then comes THE AWE! That’s the unexpected payoff. It’s the something you didn’t even know you were looking for. The wonder you feel when facing the very thing that scared you in the first place. And that – the moment that follows the work, the noise, and the scary parts – is when you can finally look up and see the good stuff. It’s the explosion of pure joy, togetherness, family, community, and unity, that comes despite annoying traffic, cranky kids, disagreements, fatigue, and the “hangry”-ness and weariness which plagues us all at the end of a long, crazy day. That moment will always make the rest fade away like magic. And it too is gone just as fast. So just remember to look up. Happy Fourth, everyone. Much Love. Mean it.

“With roots going back more than 100 years as well as being a lifelong resident, I know how special St. Simons is, the importance of green space, and balance of development” The newest 1% for St. Simons partner is DeLoach Sotheby’s International Realty. “With roots going back more than 100 years as well as being a lifelong resident, I know how special St. Simons is, the importance of green space, and balance of development” says Frank DeLoach, owner and broker of DeLoach Sotheby’s International Realty, whose company has been a leader in the local real estate market serving the Golden Isles since the early 1990s. The firm is a full-service real estate company offering comprehensive and personalized support to both sellers and buyers. “I’m delighted to have DeLoach Sotheby’s join 1% for St. Simons,” says Sara Baker, manager of the program. “We appreciate Frank’s willingness to participate and give back to the community and to be the first in his industry to join the 1% for St. Simons program.” Buying or selling a home, or any other type of property for that matter, is a much more involved process than many people realize. For home owners, it can also be an emotional and stressful time. DeLoach Sotheby’s International Realty recognizes this and is committed to supporting their clients every step of the way, using both modern practices combined with personal attention. With a team of real estate pros, and with decades of local knowledge, the firm works to ensure that the home buying and selling processes are smooth and enjoyable experiences. DeLoach was born on St. Simons Island, lived his entire life in this community and is a University of Georgia alumni. Opening his real estate brokerage and development company in 1992, he quickly grew the company into one

of the area’s largest and most well-known businesses. He is also a community leader, serving on the Board of Directors of the St. Simons Land Trust, as a Commissioner on the Glynn County Airport Commission, and has served as Deacon in the St. Simons Presbyterian Church. “Frank is blazing the trail for other real estate companies and organizations to get behind and support this worthy cause” says David Pope, St. Simons Land Trust Executive Director. Money raised by the 1% for St. Simons program, allows the Land Trust to undertake projects that are carefully vetted against a set of criteria that include ecological value, public access/benefit, and fundraising feasibility. Their current focus areas include: 1) The large amount of acreage available for protection north of the Lawrence Road roundabout, including Musgrove and Cannon’s Point. These properties are wooded, feature maritime forests and wildlife habitat, and are among some of the most ecologically sensitive in the world. The north end also faces the largest threat of development, and therefore represents the largest impact on our rare ecosystems and quality of life. 2) Numerous opportunities for greenspace on the south end of the island. ho would have thought that a whimsical Facebook post, Hurricane Irma evacuation, and an MLB charity program would come together in a perfect storm of events to make some items on a birthday bucket list come true? But that’s exactly how it came to be that Chad Goehring stood on the mound at Rogers Center on May 12 to throw out the first pitch in the Toronto Blue Jays game against the Boston Red Sox.

54

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

You may know Chad Goehring through his position as a principal at Harrison Design, or from seeing him out with his lovely wife, Tara, at local community events, or as the devoted dad to two beautiful and fun-loving little blonde daughters. Maybe you attend church with them at St. Simons Community Church. He’s certainly no stranger around the island. But you might not have heard the story behind this very cool opportunity.

It all began last September, as Chad reflected on the last hours of his 30s. He took to Facebook and posted a “bucket list” detailing 30 things he hoped to accomplish in the next 40 years of his life. Some were silly, others quite attainable, and a few were admittedly pipe dreams. In it, he says, “Haven’t cared much about birthdays – but this one seems different!” Little did he know how true that was. Hurricane Irma came to visit shortly after his birthday and the Goehrings evacuated to a friend’s home in Atlanta. Chad explains, “One night, over a bottle of wine, my buddy brings up that ‘bucket list’ and says, ‘Hey, you want to knock some things off of that list? I think I can take care of a couple. How would you like to go to Toronto?' ” You see, Chad’s list said he had never been to Canada or Mexico. He also said he hadn’t done anything with a professional sports team. His friend had won a First Pitch Package at an auction supporting the Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by former MLB player and manager

and current MLB chief baseball officer Joe Torre and his wife, Ali, in 2002. The charity provides services in schools to help children who have been traumatized by exposure to violence including domestic violence, child abuse, teen dating abuse, and sexual assault, in order to empower them to live healthy lives free of violence. Their mission is to educate to end the cycle of domestic violence and save lives. The First Pitch Package provides the opportunity to throw out a first pitch in each of the 30 stadiums over a period of 3 years. Chad’s friend, Joel, offered him the experience of doing that in Toronto. On January 8, Stephanie Wright of the Blue Jays confirmed the game and date. Chad would get to show off his arm on May 12 in a game against the Red Sox. And so, the pressure was on. Chad says, “I was never a baseball pitcher or player. I practiced for the first time on February 11 at Mallory Park with a friend and his son. I put in a total of about six Sunday practices at Mallory Park, a few beach practices on Sea Island, and had a couple ‘instruction sessions’ at Halyards’ bar.” He adds, “I wasn’t that

nervous until people, including my pastor, David Yarborough, who is an athlete himself, started sending me first pitch fail videos! I didn’t want to let everybody down with a bad pitch.” As the big day got closer, the Blue Jays treated Chad like a king. He was given 4 free tickets to the game and also arranged for other friends and family members to come out, so he had a crew of 13 people there to cheer him on. In early May, Laura Spratt, the coordinator and head of game entertainment gave him some instruction about what to expect on game day. And on May 12, Chad got to attend batting practice on the field with Tom Robertson of client services, and David O’Reilly of the corporate partnership division. He was presented with a personalized Blue Jays jersey, with a number of his choosing (a sweet anniversary nod to Tara) and a team cap, as well as video and photographs of the first pitch. “I loved Toronto. Everything about the experience. They welcomed me and made me feel very comfortable.” At 4:00 p.m. the first pitch announcement was made, and Chad made his throw. Not only did it make it to the plate … it looked like a strike. Perfect!

s the celebration of graduation season comes to a close and the reality of getting prepared for the next adventure sets in, it is normal to feel overwhelmed as a new college student and especially as a parent. As a rising senior in college, I have had time to weed out the lesser of the “must haves” and pack lightly from year to year. Although there is no such thing as being too prepared for leaving home, there are a few things that I can say I’m glad that I had, wish I’d had, or would be a suitable gift for your favorite graduates. The typical first trip home for most college students includes at least three loads of dirty laundry. If you have ever lived in campus housing, you understand that the laundry room feels as though it’s located in a different time zone than your dorm room, and the haul is hardly worth the fresh clothes. Dur-

ing my freshman year, a friend of mine had a rolling laundry hamper that I envied every time I piled up a week’s worth of dirty clothes and arrived out of breath at the building’s shared laundry space. To

make those trips easier and hopefully more frequent, do yourself or your college student the favor of purchasing one of those rolling hampers. They’re available at Target, Walmart and of course, Amazon. Something we all realize as we get older is just how much our moms do for us in general. This is especially true regarding laundry. Another item that I could not get through a week without is a hand-held steamer. Trying to fit in with the crowds of people all sharing your confused emotions is intimidating, but at least you can be confident with your freshly pressed linens. I purchased mine from Target, but like all other good things, they can be purchased on Amazon. Being away from home is a major adjustment, so giving a gift that encourages your loved one on their next adventure can provide the comfort they’re missing in their new home away from home. The personalized pillowcases from

PillowGrace can be printed with a favorite quote or bible verse to serve as a reminder for college students of what can get them through the long nights of studying. I have given these to friends for graduation and they always seem to love them. PillowGrace can customize your pillow case by thread color, size verse or quote, and they even have cases that are themed by team mascot and sorority or fraternity colors. One of the hardest things about having everything you own in an unusually small space is knowing where your things are when you need them. Something I had that made this a little bit easier was a keychain wallet. These can range anywhere from a simple card holder from Target or TJ Maxx to a designer brand such as Tory Burch. For many campuses, you are required to carry your student ID with you to permit entry into dorm rooms, dining halls and exercise facilities. For those who don’t want to carry a wrist wallet accessory, rubber phone wallets that stick to a case and are sized specifically to hold cards work perfectly as an alternative. One of the most useful things I received when I left home was a first-aid kit that my mom had put together herself with medicines to treat colds, aches and pains, flu symptoms and everything in between, including bug spray and (continues)

sunscreen. The kit was made complete with a thermometer to be able to distinguish my feelings of exhaustion from actual sickness. On a college campus, illness spreads like wildfire and something that may come as a surprise when you dash to CVS is that there are a thousand pills and liquids to treat your symptoms and they are all much more expensive than you would have ever thought. Not only did I use this gift frequently, but my roommates, friends, and sorority sisters also came to me with all that ailed them. Everyone needs a first aid kit like this, no matter how strong you think your immune system. I think everyone in my shoes can agree when I say college students like to eat. Despite the meal plan that is convenient, paid for and

decently tasty, at some point everyone gets tired of the same options day in and day out. A gift that is guaranteed to be used and appreciated are gift cards. While you may think “Oh, but a gift card is so impersonal;” speaking from three years of experience, nothing makes a college student happier than having a meal or groceries paid for. To a college student, receiving a gift card to the best local grocery store in the area, a favorite restaurant or even a trusty Walmart is like unwrapping Willy Wonka’s golden ticket every time! For the gals in your life, a gift card to a clothing store may be a nice

treat when they are adjusting their wardrobe from high school to college. If you are reading this as a recent high school graduate, the most important thing I have realized that everyone needs through this time of transition is each other. I never appreciated the people on my home team like I did during these times of change. As I mentioned, my mom got me through the preparation for going off to school. If I had to pick a most valuable thing to take with you, it would be your relationships with those who raised you, encouraged you, and helped build the foundation of who you are as you spread your wings. These people know you to your core and are always cheering for you to do your best. For parents, friends, and family members, remember that the role you have played for the last 18 years may begin to look and feel different, but you are needed now more than ever.

DON’T GET HOOKED In this age of cyberspace we increasingly rely on technology and the internet for communication and transactions, and with that comes the increased risk of security issues.

60

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

I

t seems we hear regularly about confidential information being accidentally released or databases being hacked, not to mention all the spam we receive in our own inboxes daily. EIL turned to the Golden Isles’ largest network and IT service provider, Coastal Computer Consulting, LLC., to see if they would offer some guidance on keeping your information safe in the digital age. Owner Adam Casgar said that phishing is a very popular topic to address because new scams pop up daily and they’re becoming more convincing. It’s not just businesses

that are targeted, simply surfing the net from an unsecured location or taking what seem to be harmless quizzes on Facebook can put your personal information at risk. Teaching people how to recognize phishing and deal with it is an important first step. What is phishing?

Scammers have several ways to infiltrate your privacy. Most of us know to watch out for fake emails that pretend to be from friends or legitimate businesses, but phishing also takes other forms. You may get phone calls claiming your computer is infected or stating that there’s some other emergency requiring immediate action for which you need to provide personal account information. Phishing is also widespread in social media with fake customer support accounts and links sent through direct messages. What do they want?

The goal of phishing is to acquire your personal information. Cyber crooks want account numbers, login credentials, answers to questions that may be linked to your passwords and security questions. Some are quite sophisticated about collecting that data, and something as simple as verifying addresses, dates of birth, or your mother’s maiden name can come back to bite you. Be very wary when you are asked for this type of information by phone or via email or direct message. Many scammers will attempt to secure access to your computer so they can install malware, gain control of your equipment, obtain information, and then use it as their own IP address and mask their identity. Scammers may also try to install ransomware that can lock down all or parts of your computer until you pay up. Beware of messages that tell you to install free malware detectors, anti-virus protection, or software to clean up your computer. Often once that so-called “freeware” is installed, BANG! NOW you have malware on your computer and they’re only willing to fix it for a fee, and that is anything

but free. Always go to a trusted professional if you suspect your computer may have been exposed to malware. How do I recognize phishing?

Phishing also uses messages that trigger an emotional response, especially fear, that creates a sense that you need to act quickly. Pause to calm that urge and take some time to investigate the source of the message. How did you receive it? Did it flash on a website screen while you were browsing? Is it promoting a product or service? To which of your email accounts was it sent? Do you have accounts or information with the sender? Did the message actually come from the sender? Pay careful attention to “package can’t be delivered” or “we need to update your account information” emails especially. Phishing scams are often disguised as fake contests by retailers, big ticket prizes and giveaways, free travel offers, etc. Businesses can also often be targeted through false customer inquiries. You know the old saying, “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.” How can I keep my information safe?

Be suspicious of everything … even if it looks totally legitimate! The paramount rule: don’t click on links or open attachments unless you are 100% certain that they are from a trusted source, they are something you are expecting to receive, or you can verify they were sent by the sender and they are the type of file indicated (video, document, image file). If you are not 100% sure, go to the website instead

of opening the link through your email. To identify the target website, hover your mouse over the included link. If this website address doesn’t match the name of the sender or has an unfamiliar extension (or denotes a foreign country), that should be a red flag. Watch for subtle mispellings (Did you even catch that

one?). Always remember that major entities like Microsoft, banks, the IRS and other governmental agencies will NOT ask for personal information in an email, phone call, or social media. Do not hesitate to call a business to confirm they sent correspondence if you are in doubt. A few other important rules of thumb that many users forget: don’t allow others to use your computer to access the internet, keep your company and family networks secure and safe from outside access with passwords, when traveling make sure you are using secured and trusted wifi networks and servers if you are transmitting personal information. Beach Lessons for Life

halk it up to overconfidence. Perhaps it was Sunday brain – the phenomenon pastors experience after long mornings of worship. Maybe it was a kind of denial, which is a form of stupidity, I suppose. Whatever it was, I knew better, and still got a sunburn. I rationalized my choice not to put sunscreen: I was sitting under a tent on the beach. Surely the tent’s shade would protect me. Of course, it didn’t. Despite camping out under the canopy for the duration of the visit, all the still-pale winter bits of skin were bright red the next day. I’d say it was a rookie mistake, but I’m not a rookie anymore, and plenty of locals still get sunburns too. I just hope I don’t get a chunk of skin carved out by my dermatologist later in life as a result.

of our beach accoutrement. We each carry our own beach chairs using shoulder straps, and we typically have a beach bag and a small cooler.

In truth, our beachgoing has gotten more routine, organized, and easier over the years we’ve lived here. When we first came to St. Simons, we could have rented sherpas to carry all our beach items. Granted, the kids were small, meaning they couldn’t carry their own chairs and sand toys, but we still took too much stuff. I recently sold my beach carts, because I realized we hadn’t used one in years. We now operate under the “if you can’t carry it, don’t bring it” mentality. This includes the pop-up canopy, although the tent isn’t a regular part

We are pretty routine in our beach destination too. We tend to go to the Coast Guard beach more often than not. It is the largest parking area, which means it can have the largest crowds too. We’ve learned, however, that if you simply walk a little north (easy to do when you’re traveling light) the crowds thin out quickly. There’s also a lot more sand north of the Coast Guard entrance than there used to be a few years ago.

64

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

Traveling light to and from the beach makes it much more likely that we’ll actually go to the beach. If the process is too hard, it can be difficult to work up the motivation needed to load up and trek out to the sand. Not going to the beach seems like a terrible waste of one of our best natural resources. Combine that with the restorative effects of surf and sun on the soul and going to the beach becomes a necessity. It was once a part of our Sunday afternoon Sabbath keeping and, although we let it get away from us, we’re recommitting to regular beach time, especially on Sunday afternoons.

Some locals cluck their teeth when I tell them we go to the Coast Guard beach. It’s considered

by some to be “the tourist beach.” That may be; it’s certainly one of them. I can usually find parking in the lot, though, or in a parishioner’s nearby driveway, and I can’t say the same for other beach entrances. Add in the bathrooms and showers, and it becomes an easy choice. I think my beachgoing learnings are paying off in other parts of life too. The concepts of traveling light and seeking restorative practices, in general, could be the building blocks of a life well lived. In my world, they fit perfectly into the teachings of the church. Christian tradition warns us off from accumulating too much stuff, or at least letting our stuff take center stage in our lives. When it comes to seeking the restorative, most of us are not very good at it most of the time, as we may lose sight of what’s important for our souls when we’re prioritizing time and navigating lists of competing obligations. When we fail to follow our routines or fail to answer the call to restore our souls, and when we get weighed down by the stuff of our lives instead of living life fully, there’s a chance we’re going to get burned. We know better. We might be naïve, overconfident, or just in denial. But it will catch up with us one way or another. Me? I’m going to go sit in my beach chair and ponder this for a bit. With plenty of sunscreen on, of course.

SUMMER CLASSIC FILM FESTIVAL RETURNS TO RITZ The Summer Classic Film Festival returns to The Ritz Theatre July 13-15 with a full weekend of films from 1939. The weekend kicks off Friday with a discussion of “1939: The Year of the Movie,” followed by a screening of the ground-breaking western, Destry Rides Again. On Saturday at 3:00 p.m. watch the catty, brilliantly acted, fast-paced farce The Women, while you enjoy cookies and punch. Then take a break to grab a special film dinner at one of the participating downtown restaurants, then return for The Wizard of Oz at 7:00 p.m. Set aside Sunday

afternoon for a trip to Tara, complete with the option of having a “Taste of the South” intermission meal serviced up by Indigo Coastal Shanty, as part of the 3:00 p.m. screening of Gone With the Wind. Go to goldenislesarts.org to see pricing information and order tickets.

SOUNDS OF SUMMER On July 22, bring your chair, a blanket, and a picnic dinner with your favorite beverages to Neptune Park for an evening of melodies by sassy

songstress Annie Akins. This month’s Sounds by the Sea concert presented by Golden Isles Arts and Humanities will feature this local treasure crooning some favorite tunes from her extensive repertoire that spans everything from jazz and blues to rock standards, and she’ll keep the audience on their toes with her humor and quick wit. Music begins at 7:00 p.m., so come out early to get a good spot and catch the ocean breezes as you wait on sunset and the stars to appear. Tickets are available at the gate: $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6-12, and children under 6 are admitted free of charge. It’s always a great way to wind down a summer weekend.

Summertime in the Village

S

ince the 1890s, the Village has welcomed summertime visitors to St. Simons Island. Before the F.J. Torras Causeway was built in 1924, ferry service provided transportation to the island, stopping at the Village Pier. To accommodate those seeking ocean breezes, sand and surf, small hotels sprang up along the water’s edge and shops were built on Mallery Street. Islanders opened boarding houses, sold handicrafts and took visitors on tours of colonial and plantation ruins. In the early 20th century, the Pier Hotel was a popular establishment, offering food, drinks and bathing suits, as advertised in bold letters on the building’s exterior. For a short time, the hotel operated a particularly enticing amenity – a water slide. This three-story wooden structure whisked intrepid swimmers, seated in small sleds, down a steep ramp into the water. This month’s images from the Coastal Georgia Historical Society archives show visitors strolling in front of the Pier Hotel in 1907 and the short-lived water slide.

Our monthly images on this page are from the vast archives of the Coastal Georgia Historical Society. The Society’s mission includes the “administration, restoration and maintenance of historic facilities and resources … preserved as a living part of the historical and cultural foundations of our coastal community.” Society facilities include the St. Simons Lighthouse and Museum, the A.W. Jones Heritage Center, and the Historic Coast Guard Station. To learn more about the Society, its diverse programs, and the benefits of Society membership, please call (912) 638.4666, or visit coastalgeorgiahistory.org.
