PUBLISHER’S LETTER

It’s Spring Cleaning Time Spring cleaning supervisory crew hard at work.

W

ith the warm weather making itself known here on St. Simons Island, it’s time to tackle your spring cleaning, so you can relax and enjoy the summer. Let’s face it, spring cleaning is a chore (no pun intended). You don’t get paid for it, and it usually takes up hours of your weekend. Since it’s such a dreaded task for most of us, I decided to collect a few spring cleaning quotes to “inspire” you!

I’m not going to vacuum until Sears makes one you can ride on. If you want to get rid of stuff, you can always do a good spring cleaning. Or you can do what I do. Move. I’m going to start spring cleaning my house today. And by cleaning, I mean drinking wine and spraying everything with Febreze.

And my favorite: Instead of cleaning house, I just watch an

episode of Hoarders and think, “Wow, my house looks great!”

Dust is a protective coating for fine furniture. My idea of housework is to sweep the room with a glance.

IT’S ALSO TIME TO VOTE! May is the month to cast your votes for

Here in the Golden Isles,

the month of May is when spring turns to summer, with Memorial Day Weekend kicking off the start of our vacation season. In our feature, we’re embracing the transition from the rainy days that made our flowers bloom into sun-soaked beach afternoons and vacation mode.

Fashion, food, and fun await.

O

ne of the first things we think about when getting ready for summer is trading in the shoes and boots that got us through the cooler, wetter months for cute flip flops and strappy sandals. We want to kick up our heels and show off our pedicures. Bright colors and bling look fabulous against our tanned skin and we’re tired of hiding our feet away. Time for toes in the sand and on the dance floor too. The Pampered Foot, located at 3419 Frederica Road on St. Simons Island, has been an island staple for footwear for more than 20 years, and has chic styles that will cushion your feet in comfort and turn heads too. Owner Martha Banister says, “We’re ready for the warmer weather and the biggest trend right now is comfort. We’re seeing more designers than just traditional stand-bys like Cole Hahn or Pliner focusing on comfort in women’s shoes, which made the trip to market very fun!” She also says that fresh colors and metallics continue to be very popular. “From well-made comfortable casual shoes like Flex and NAOT to classic evening looks by Louise et Cie and Stuart Weitzman, we can help you find your perfect pair for any occasion.”

Pep in Your Step TOP: These bright multicolored sandals from Spanish footwear designer Bren-

da Zaro accessorized with this green fringe-covered clutch are perfect for the spring into summer transition. You can use this combo to add color to your LBD or as a complement to white pants and a sunny yellow top. Available at Shackelford Shoes, 28 Market Street, Suite 122, St. Simons Island. RIGHT: For a wild and whimsical touch that calls to mind nights in Marrakesh,

slip into these jeweled P-Araminta sandals by Yellow Box from Wild & Personal Boutique, located at 214 Redfern Village on St. Simons Island.

Brush aside the boots, grab some new sandals, and put your best foot forward! 22

n the movie What a Girl Wants Amanda Byne’s character tells her royal father played by Colin Firth “Mom says if you can walk on a beach and you have a steady hand with nail polish, there’s no reason to ever pay for a pedicure.” While we agree in principle with this statement, we also know that the foot and leg massage that generally accompanies a good pedicure is worth every penny! So whether you choose to have someone else pamper your feet or decide to give your toes some TLC yourself with a little foot scrub and some new polish, we’ve got some tips about what’s on trend this season as you slip into your sandals. Pinks and reds are never out of style. Neutral shades from Essie’s Sheer Silhouette collection offer long-lasting benefits of a gel polish with minimal need for touch-ups and nude-like colors that will complement anything. To bring out the warmer hues in your skin, choose a shade of red with a slight hint of orange, like poppy. If you want to make a feminine statement in bright pink, Chanel’s Camelia is a designer look that’s as iconic as the name itself. Sugar Daddy by Essie offers up a cotton candy pink. A cute trend for spring and summer brides who want to be sure to wear “something blue” is to do it with a baby blue or sky blue pedicure. On the runway, glitter has been on point, with models in Kate Spade’s Spring 2019 show sporting flecks of gold courtesy of Essie. Sparkling shades of emerald green are also on trend for the bold. We think that anything that catches the sun and makes you smile is perfect for your personal pedi.

ith more hours of sunshine and more time spent on and around the water comes the need to protect our eyes. We dropped into Millican Eye Care to see their spring/summer inventory and learned about choosing lenses that suit your environment from one of their topselling brands: Costa Del Mar. Costa offers polarized lenses in seven colors to optimize vision and eye protection in light conditions that range from low-light like dawn to extremely bright light with blinding glare. Costa’s gray and gray silver mirror lenses are the best choice for everyday activities on land and water. For offshore fishing and boating, blue mirror lenses are the best to handle glare from harsh sun and open reflective water. For freshwater and inshore treks, green mirror and copper are great options because they offer high contrast and reduce glare, with the copper also being extremely versatile and excellent for cloudy days. For performance (but not driving) at low light at dawn or dusk, the high contrast offered by

Costa’s sunrise silver mirror extended wear lenses is perfect. You’ll want to make your choice based on the environment you’ll be wearing your sunglasses most. The Millican Eye Center staff is happy to help you with your selection and can discuss prescription lens needs as well. Something else that makes Costa stand out from other brands is the way they interact with our coastal environment. Their Untangled Collection features sunglasses with frames made from recycled fishing nets. Costa joined forces with Bureo, who works with fishermen to prevent discarded nets from polluting our oceans and harming marine life by collecting discarded nets from commercial ports in Chile and recycling them into pellets. These pellets are then molded into the Untangled Collection sunglass frames. Brilliant! Additionally, near and dear to our hearts, Costa also offers an OCEARCH Collection with frames, colors and gear featuring designs inspired by sharks as their tribute to the crea-

tures that help keep our ocean ecosystems balanced. Each purchase helps fund research expeditions for our friends aboard OCEARCH and their mission to protect sharks. Whether you choose Costa or Ray Bans or any of the other sunglasses available at Millican Eye Center, remember it’s always important to protect your peepers and you can do it in style. Millican Eye Center has an office at 1626 Frederica Road on St. Simons Island and locations at 149 Altama Connector and 2500 Starling Street, Suite 104 in Brunswick, or visit their website at millicaneye.com.

Lighten Up With the warmer weather also comes the desire to change up our diets and eat lighter, healthier dishes. Take advantage of fresh produce and make dishes using lots of fruit and veggies. Salads, simple stir-fries, and smoothies are all seasonal favorites. Strawberry & Mixed Green Salad INGREDIENTS:

Whisk until dressing doesn’t look like it’s separating. Season with salt and pepper. In a large bowl, place greens, strawberries, cheese, and nuts. Pour as much dressing as you want over salad mixture and toss to combine. Serve immediately.

2 Tbsp. ketchup 2 to 3 garlic cloves, minced 1/2 tsp. each marjoram, basil and oregano, rosemary, dried 1-1/2 lbs. beef top sirloin, cut into 1" cubes 2 medium onions, cut into wedges 1-1/2 c. zucchini or yellow squash, cut in large cubes 2 small red, yellow or orange peppers, cut into 1-inch pieces 1-2 carrots, cut into thick slices

Pour remaining marinade into another large resealable plastic bag and do the same with vegetables. . Refrigerate both bags 8 hours or overnight. Drain beef and discard marinade. Drain vegetables and reserve marinade for basting. Place beef and vegetables, alternating as desired, onto 6 metal or soaked wooden skewers. Grill kabobs, covered, over medium heat, or broil 4 in. from heat 10-15 minutes, or until beef reaches desired doneness and vegetables are crisp-tender. Turn occasionally and during the last 5 minutes of cooking, baste with reserved marinade.

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

T

he best way to have your own ready supply is to grow then at home. And don’t worry if you don’t have garden space in the yard, a windowsill herb garden adds a lovely touch to any kitchen.

Start with a sunny windowsill. The ideal window would be south or southwest facing, away from drafts, and gets at least six hours of sun per day. If you don’t have a reliably sunny window, you can install suitable plant lighting. Basil, mint, dill, cilantro, chives, oregano, parsley, lavender, rosemary, and thyme are all good selections for a windowsill garden. You’ll want to decide whether to start from seed or purchase small plants. Annual herbs are easy to start from seed. For perennial herbs, it’s often easier to start with plants because they take longer to germinate. If starting seeds, fill container with commercial seed-starting mix or potting soil, or an even combination of the two, designating individual pots for each herb so each plant can be given the specific conditions it needs to flourish. Check seed packets to determine planting depth. If you want to a variety of herbs in a single container, make sure they all have the same requirements to grow. It’s important to know what conditions each plant needs; for exam-

ple, basil prefers warmth, while sage and rosemary thrive in cooler temperatures. Make sure all containers have drainage holes and waterproof saucers. Water your herbs to keep soil moist but not soggy, and drain saucers after watering. Feed with a halfstrength solution of all-purpose fertilizer monthly. To avoid damage to foliage, make sure to keep leaves from touching windows. Once plants are at least six inches tall, don’t be afraid to use them. Snip and use your herbs

frequently to encourage their growth. The more you snip, the fuller and bushier they’ll become, so here’s to fresh chives on your potatoes, fresh dill to garnish your cooked fish, fresh oregano in your spaghetti sauce, fresh rosemary in your breakfast potatoes, and fresh parsley garnishing your cheese omelet. We hope this helps you put some spring in your step as we head into summer. Those lazy, hazy days will be here before we know it!

ome celebrate the best that Coastal Georgia has to offer with fresh seafood, local culture, boating and shrimping, arts, crafts, and live music. May Fair, celebrating the 81st Annual Brunswick Blessing of the Fleet, will be held at Mary Ross Waterfront Park on Saturday, May 11 from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. with the actual blessing taking place at 2:00 p.m. The festival will feature fun and games for the kids, fabulous food, great family entertainment, and a variety of artists and craft vendors. The blessing tradition was first begun around the time of WWII by Portuguese immigrants who introduced the ceremony to their new American home in coastal Georgia. The event is held on Mother’s Day weekend to honor Our Lady of Fatima, the patron saint of Portugal. During the blessing, freshly painted and decorated shrimp trawlers circle the waterfront, with “working” boats usually joined by recreational watercraft. In a procession, the boats pass by a boat with local clergy and honor guard on

The boats then move up the East River to St. Simons Sound, where a flower anchor is laid upon the water in memory of local fishermen who perished at sea. Gates to May Fair will open at 10:00 a.m. with arts & crafts and food vendors, commercial displays, an education area that includes the UGA marine life touch tank, a children’s area, and the Southeast Georgia Health System Wellness Mobile. Musical and other family fun entertainment will begin on the stage at 10:00 a.m. Performers include soulful saxophonist/singer Michael Hulett, 80s cover band Squirt Gun, and rockers CP & the Shockers. If you had asked me 10 years ago, even 5 years ago, my thoughts on Chilean wines, you wouldn’t have been able to print my likely profane response. As an old school sommelier with a penchant for Old World wines, for me to accept, much less celebrate, the juice of Chile would have been absurd! But here I am leading the huasos to the new horizons of South American vino! In March, our Heathen Wine Tour group visited nine winery owners and winemakers in

Chile, from classic producers who have paved the way (Casa Silva, Koyle, Casa Marin) to big gun award winners (Clos Apalta), to the new “little guys” who are doing things their way and making wines in styles that most don’t recognize in this part of the world (Villard, Amayna, Clos De Luz). After living in Argentina’s shadow in the wine world for much of the last 30 years, Chile has finally found its own niche and is now pushing above and beyond with high elevation, coastal vineyards and New World thinking that has nothing to do with Malbec!

Chile lies on the west side of the Andes, the highest mountain range in the southern hemisphere, sequestered by the Atacama Desert in the north, the Pacific to the west, and Patagonia to the south. Over the years, Chile has done much to hinder their own viticulture success with laws on imported/exported wines, government that let’s just say was not exactly “user friendly,” and sometimes not even knowing what they had planted in their own back yard. When Carménère, a grape originally from Bordeaux, was brought to Chile in the (continues)

removed the “animal stitching.” Who knew for only 100 pesos you could get stitches twice in the same seating in Chile?!

1850s, it was thought to be Merlot. It wasn’t until 1994 that DNA testing showed it to be Carménère, a grape thought to be virtually extinct in the rest of the world. In 1998, Chile’s Department of Agriculture finally recognized the grape as Carménère and claimed this previous treasure as their own. While most of our group had never been to Chile, I had already taken previous jaunts here and fallen in love with the food, culture, some of the wines, and, most of all, the people. There’s seafood from a 2600 mile coast, veggies that would rival those from California’s central coast, and meats (lots of meats) from a culture cherishes their barbeque (asado) as much as their polo matches. To top all that, Chilean people are some of the most kind, respectful and genuine of any country I visit, and the vino scene here has really taken off. From Santiago, we headed south to the Colchagua Valley for three days of visiting wineries known for Carménère, Cabernet Sauvignon, and other full-bodied reds. We took full advantage-for the harvest season, spending hours frolicking in vineyards and playing in the grapes. Our first afternoon was spent in the small village 42

of Santa Cruz enjoying the “Vendimia” or the festival of the new harvest. Locals flock to the town square for “cueca” (national dance competition), crowning of the “harvest queen,” lively bands, streets lined with open fire grills of meats, empanadas, beer, and, of course, wine, lots and lots of wine. The local wineries come out to pour their goods on this weekend of harvest joy. It’s reminiscent of homecoming weekend in the South plus the state fair and all of your moonshining neighbors converging on town square at the same time! The heat, dancing, and asado made drinking rosé as refreshing as cold water from the hose in the yard on a summer day. Back in the emergency room, the veterinarian stood proudly admiring the stitches he had given our “hot tubbist” as the surgeon appeared. With a look of disbelief, the surgeon promptly

Over the next days, we enjoyed lunch in the polo fields at Casa Silva after tasting wine from barrels, cable car rides to the top of the mountain for tribal traditions at Vina Santa Cruz, and walks in the organic vineyards at the foot of the Andes at Koyle with the winemaker as his sheep grazed in the vines. We visited Clos Apalta for private “al fresco” lunch at the owner’s residence in the vineyards and tasting with Diego the assistant winemaker. There we toured one of the most awesome cellars I’ve ever seen (and that’s a lot of cellars). The wine making facility is seven floors built into the side of a mountain, with each floor playing its own integral role, and the bottom 2 floors built directly into the granitic stone. An unassuming oval “tasting table” in the barrel room opens up like the Millennium Falcon in Star Wars and this stairway to heaven leads to

the owner’s private cellar. At breakfast the next morning another resort guest overheard our conversations about the cellar and proclaimed, “I worked for the family and have never been allowed in the cellar!” Guess he should have gone on a Heathen Wine Tour! Wednesday morning we were off to the coast of Casablanca to find the next generation pumping out crisp wines in high elevation

vineyards. Four miles from the Pacific, these grapes relish cool breezes that provide a scintillating backbone of zesty acidity. The wines leap from the glass with wafting aromatics and are almost salty from the sea breeze, making them the ultimate complement to the fresh mussels, ceviche, sea bass and octopus heaped upon us at every turn. We then stopped in Almahue Valley to visit one of the top surprises of the trip, Clos De Luz winery, where we strolled through the oldest Carménère vines in Chile (planted in 1945) hearing tales from Senor Gabriel. The charming and handsome father of the winemaker delivered us to an impromptu tasting on a nook surrounded by vines and mountains in the valley. The Grenache and Syrah (produced in 500 case increments) dazzled as we feasted on fresh bread and local cheese. A tour of the family hacienda, meeting their polo horses, and lunch in the vineyards, was followed by a long nap on the way to Casablanca. The next morning, our quest was to meet JeanCharles Villard in San Antonio Valley. Truth be told, would be just as happy catching waves in Hawaii as he would making fine Chardonnay on the coast of Chile. He and his mother know

free labor when the see it and put us to work assisting with pump overs in the winery. We escaped bottling to enjoy local seafood paired with richly balanced chardonnay and pinot noir on the porch. The afternoon was spent in Leyda Valley, minutes from the coast, where our friend Anthony runs the Amayna and

Boya wineries, making Pinot Noir and Syrah. We started with a tasting overlooking the entire valley, then glasses of older vintages with the winemaker in the cellar, and ended the day by celebrating a tour member’s birthday with pisco sours, pizza, and champagne on the beach in Santa Domingo. Our last visit was to the minuscule town of Lo Abarca put on the map by Casa Marin, a

winery founded by the leading lady of wine in Chile, Maria Luz Marin. While tasting bottles from her cellar, we listened to Ms. Marin’s story of twists and rejection as she clawed her way to the top of the industry. A 19th century horse-drawn carriage carried us through the village before lunch in the vineyards where we drank Pinot Noir from 2011 while the 2019 Pinot Noir grapes was being picked from the vines surrounding us. On our ride back to the resort, I called to see if a doctor could ensure our “hot tubbist” had clean gauze for the flight home. When we arrived, owner Rodrigo met us with the sad fact that there was no doctor available, but he had “very good news.” Jokingly I replied, “Let me guess, you’re a veterinarian?!” Rodrigo incredulously replied, “How did you know?!” It seems he was a University of Florida graduate as well! The name of our “hot tubbist” and resort have not been stated for obvious reasons. No animals were injured during this trip, however I do feel they would have been in GREAT hands! Join Heathen Wine Tours for an excursion. We have upcoming trips to Italy, Oregon, Portugal & Spain, and Virginia with space available. Visit heathenwine.com for information.

We Are the Village

s the saying goes, it takes a village. Local businesses in our village have come together to help preserve the character and charm of St. Simons Island in partnership with St. Simons Land Trust’s 1% for St. Simons voluntary giving program. The program is turning pennies into protected acres. For example, if your bill comes to $20, a voluntary 1% (0.20) donation is added. Proceeds from the program are used by the land trust for land acquisition, land management, education and outreach, public access to waterways and wilderness preserves, and to ensure the protection and preservation of historic properties forever. The 1% for St. Simons program is a diverse 46

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

and growing partnership of more than 30 participating businesses from restaurants like Certified Burgers and Beverage, graphic design services such as Commonground Creative, and locally-owned hospitality and lodging businesses such as Village Inn and Pub.

Commonground Creative Commonground Creative, owned and operated by St. Simons Island native Clay Caldwell, provides graphic design and branding that expertly clarifies each client’s mission and unique offerings to the community. Clay refers to this as “finding Commonground” with island residents and visitors. He serves local mainstays like Fuse, Coastal Georgia Histori-

cal Society, and the St. Simons Land Trust from his office in Aviator Plaza. “I grew up with the natural beauty and easy pace of St. Simons,” he says. “That’s something I want to preserve for my children and grandchildren. Joining the Land Trust’s 1% program made perfect sense.” Commonground has been a member of the 1% program since it partnered with the Land Trust in 2018. Clay notes that his company and the St. Simons Land Trust were born of the same love for the local area and culture. “We both want to maintain the character of St. Simons. The Land Trust’s goal is to preserve the natural beauty

of the land. My goal is to serve the brands that speak to that character and history through the execution of thoughtful design.”

Certified Burgers and Beverage Grinder to griddle is Certified Burgers and Beverage’s approach to the hamburger. This locallyowned establishment, located at the corner of Frederica and Sea Island roads, serves only wholesome, fresh, and local food ranging from hand-cut fries to fresh ground patties and thick, luscious

milkshakes – all made in house. Chef and owner David Carrier, along with his wife Ryanne, who is “director of booze and donuts,” have created a warm environment with excellent service, delicious food including specialty sweets, and memorable drinks. Not only does the restaurant have a following for their mouthwatering burgers, their donuts have

become just as popular. Certified donuts are available at 11:00 a.m. on Sundays. The donut list changes every week and is posted on the restaurant’s front door and on social media. Get ready to wait in line, however! When you take that first bite, you’ll realize what all the hype is about. The Certified donut demand has even spread to weddings and corporate events, and the restaurant is now venturing into cakes. The Carriers also have big hearts and want to help preserve St.

Simons for locals and visitors alike. “As a business it is very important to support the community that supports you,” says David. “That community not only consists of the wonderful people around here but also the beautiful island that we make our home. The protection of green space here helps maintain its authenticity and preserves our island for years to come.” Village Inn and Pub The Village Inn and Pub has the unique distinction of being a quaint inn designed around a restored 1930s beach cottage

nestled under stately live oaks in the heart of St. Simons Island’s popular oceanfront Village. “We built The Inn around the original property and the old live oaks,” says Stella Johnson, daughter of George Stewart, the owner of the Village Inn and Pub. They very purposefully integrated the design of the inn with the façade of the cottage and the architecture of the surrounding neighborhood. Instead of traditional pavement, they utilize “grass and shell pave” for parking in order to avoid disturbing the root systems of the trees and to promote environmentally safe water run-off.

For taking this kind of care when constructing the inn, George Stewart and his wife Michelle were the honored with the first time ever “Good Developer Award” given by the island’s grassroots environmental group, Residents United for Planning and Action (RUPA). As 1% partners, that same dedication to preserving the character of the island continues. Stella adds, “some of our favorite compliments are about these oaks and the 88-year-old building that houses the Pub. Our guests are eager to help us protect the charm and history of this island and appreciate our participation in this program.” To see the entire list of 1% for St. Simons partners, visit sslt.org. Eugenia Price Discovers St. Simons Island

A

s the Island’s busy season begins and many tourists arrive to discover the magic of the Golden Isles for the first time, we look back on one of our favorite author’s accounts of her memorable first visit. Eugenia Price was already a bestselling non-fiction writer and novelist when she “accidentally” happened on St. Simons during a book tour in 1961. She wrote in her St. Simons Memoir that she had spent Thanksgiving with her mother in her hometown of Charleston, West Virginia, and had miscalculated the resulting driving time to their next destination of Jacksonville, Florida. Price and her companion, author and best friend Joyce Blackburn, thus had two days to spare to explore the Southeast. Price suggested they visit the coast of Georgia. She had never done a book signing or spoken there and figured “No one will recognize me. I can just … be me.” The two discarded the idea of visiting Sea Island as too posh for their current purposes (“I want a place where I don’t have to dress up for a change.”) and thus settled on St. Simons Island. Their AAA guidebook led them to Craft’s Ocean Court, where the Coast Cottages are currently located. Their first night was filled with an eerie “early winter darkness” as

they drove “along between arching trees, their ghostly strands of gray Spanish moss waving visibly and then invisibly in the low clouds. The next morning they took the long drive along Frederica Road, stopping to admire “the wild tangles and wonder” of the island. It was then that Price found

the inspiration for her famous St. Simons trilogy of novels: Christ Church. She wrote, “No trouble believing in Eternity here.” Price eventually made the island her permanent home and became an ardent supporter of Coastal Georgia Historical Society

and the St. Simons Lighthouse Museum. This month’s image from the Society’s collection shows Eugenia Price admiring the foundations of the original St. Simons Lighthouse, uncovered during an archaeological excavation in 1972, which served as the inspiration for her novel Lighthouse.

Our monthly images on this page are from the vast archives of the Coastal Georgia Historical Society. The Society’s mission includes the “administration, restoration and maintenance of historic facilities and resources … preserved as a living part of the historical and cultural foundations of our coastal community.” Society facilities include the St. Simons Lighthouse and Museum, the A.W. Jones Heritage Center, and the World War II Home Front Museum at the Historic Coast Guard Station. To learn more about the Society, its diverse programs, and the benefits of Society membership, please call 912.638.4666, or visit coastalgeorgiahistory.org.
