WEEK 6 READING: SURFACES THAT CAN BE BUILT FROM PAPER IN ARCHITECTURAL GEOMETRY Question 1: What are the three elementary types of developable surfaces? Provide a brief description. (Maximum 100 words) The three elementary types of developable surfaces are cylinders, cones and tangent surface of space curves. There are two reasons why they are all developable surfaces. First of all, these three surfaces have the same characteristic which is they have “a tangent plane is always tangent to the surface along an entire ruling and not just in a single point (546, Pottmann). Last but not least, each of their spherical Gaussian image is a curve which means they all have vanishing Gaussian curvature. In conclusion, parabolic surface points or flat points are the only thing that on a developable surface.

Question 2: Why is the understanding of developable surface critical in the understanding of architectural geometry? Choose one precedent from Research/Precedents tab on LMS as an example for your discussion. (Maximum 100 words) Developable surface can create a sense of space, which architectural geometry is also a final outcome of treatment of space, the relationship between them is developable surface is an experiment of architectural geometry. It is important to understand the characteristic of the geometry which is an unrolled result of developing a surface into space in order to understand the shape of the architecture. Huyghe+Le Courbusier Puppet Centre can be an example of the study of this relationship which it was created by combining panels that can refer to the two of the elementary types of developable surfaces, cylinders and cones.

WEEK 7 READING: DIGITAL FABRICATION Complete your reading before attempting these questions:

Question 1: What is digital fabrication and how does it change the understanding of two dimensional representation? (Maximum 100 words) Digital fabrication is an innovatory approach by using modern technology to model industrial product or architecture in three dimensional instead of using two dimensional representation. It provides a 3D visual platform which contains its restraints and possibilities for designer to bring their imagination further into play and document their design process. Digital practices have more potential narrow the gap between virtual and reality and digital fabrication gives a more visualized three dimensional representation than just two dimensional representation. Two dimensional representation is integrated into digital fabrication and build three dimensional digital model base on two dimensional representation.

Question 2: Suggest two reasons why folding is used extensively in the formal expression of building design? (Maximum 100 words) One of the reason why folding is used extensively in the formal expression of building design is that a three-dimensional space can be created by folding, it is a way of creating forms and structures. Moreover, folding can spontaneously turn a flat surface into complex geometric form by morphing and distorting briefly. It is used from industrial product to huge architecture designs, from small model to architecturally scaled work. Folding has a great potential in varies area. Most of the constructing methods is by unfolding to two dimensional template in order to produce material and combine them together.
