Elisavet Kazerou a r c h i t e c t To my mind, Architecture is the realized result of a long, deep and systematic intellectual process. My aim is every project to arise from a theoretical approach and a research that expands in various sectors beyond architecture, such as sociology, psychology and philosophy. In this way, architectural composition is not superficial and accidental. On the contrary, it has a deeper meaning and a reason to exist.

Refugees’ Memorial Museum in Drapetsona, Athens Graduation Thesis Elisavet Kazerou
6
Professors: Sofia Tsiraki, Kostas Tsiampaos
The refugees’ memorial museum is a place that hosts historic elements, facts and memories regarding the refugee question, both of the past and the present years. The aim of the museum is to sensibilize people and to eliminate racism, fact that is really important to my mind, especially this period since large amounts of people are obliged to emigrate due to the war and the financial crisis. This aim is achieved by presenting not only the story of modern immigrants that come from middle east but also narrating the experience of older Greek immigrants that were obliged to abandon their own home country (Minor Asia) during the decades of 10’s and 20’s. The museum consists of three different unites: the archive, the exhibition and the workshops. 1. the archive: hosts all the historic documents and elements. Moreover, it is connected with other archives or libraries. We could say that archive is the spatial expression of history. 2. the exhibition: is a narration of the experience of a refugee through variant means of representation. The elements of space and its atmosphere combined with the exhibit, invite visitor to perceive the tragedy that refugees experience and to create their personal version of collective memory. 3. workshops: events, that contribute to the exchange of different ideas, culture and experience between refugees and locals, are organized at the cafe of the museum. As a result, in the end of narration, the visitor has the opportunity to meet refugees and to interact with them. This unit expands the educative role of museum and connects it with society.

The museum is suggested to be placed at Drapetsona, a refugees’ quarter close to the port of Piraeus, where a large amount of Greek refugees, came from Minor Asia, settled in, in 1922. Thus, Drapetsona is strongly connected with refugees’ memory and as a result is the ideal place for hosting such a museum.
8
A refugees’ museum is not only a space of knowledge and an exhibition center but also a monument through which collective memory and empathy are developed. Therefore, except functionality, this museum must have a symbolic character as well. For this reason, I emphasized in the form and the means of expression. As far as the form, the structure of labyrinth is chosen as the most ideal option since it creates variant negative feelings such as the feeling of being trapped, melancholy, dramatization, disorientation, impasse, anxiety.

The form of labyrinth, combined with the absence of light, the height of space, the limited amplitude and the deafening noise of water make negative feelings and melancholy even stronger. As a result, visitor’s experience of this uncanny atmosphere is a metaphor of the tragedy that a refugee passes when he abandons home country.

The boarder illustrates the narration of the exhibition and the different elements that are used in each part. The intensity of narration is being culminated gradually as the space is becoming darker and limited. This route reaches in a climax at the central and lowest point of strusture. Then, visitor follows the way until the exit where he finds mercy.

Redesigning Klathmonos Square
redefining the relationship between public space and water Stella Athanasiou, Elisavet Kazerou Professors: Bouki Babalou, Thanos Pagonis
The main purpose of the solution is the maintenance of public space as an urban vacuum in the overcrowded center of Athens. Square can be used in various ways: as a meeting point, as a green oasis or as a public space which hosts events connected to the museum of the city of Athens. Moreover, through the architectural design, a lot of elements that were covered in the underground level such as the ancient wall and Iridanos river are emerged.
24
25
The Concept: According to the proposal, the square is considered as an urban vacuum. Therefore, it consists of a first layer, that lays over the ground. Due to the difference of the altitude, this basic layer is divided into two parts, above of which every other element is placed: the event platform, plants, lighting, seats.
26
Under the main layer of square, one can visit the ancient wall or can have bath and swim in the swimming pools or the private baths. The stairs that lead to the baths can be used as an open theatre as well.

A more profound analysis of Klathmonos Square: Klafthmonos square, due to its position and its historical significance, consists of many different layers. Under of current urban layer, there is the ancient wall that was surrounding the ancient city of Athens. Furthermore, river Iridanos flows underground.

The Composition of the elements: The objects that exist on the square are placed in such a way in order to intensify the basic architectural intension. That is to say, the ramp and the lights underline the view on the Academy, while the floating platform is an extension of the museum. Moreover, this platform covers the baths that are proposed and the ancient wall makes visitor turn and get in baths space.

Block of Flats in Metaxourgeio Stella Athanasiou, Elisavet Kazerou Professor: Bouki Babalou
Metaxourgeio is an urban neighborhood in the center of Athens, near Kerameikos and Omonoia square. It is frequently described as a transition area since it is transformed from an abandoned industrial zone into an artistic and fashionable neighborhood. In the area, one can find a large variety of different and contradictory activities; some old small industries that have remained from the previous phase of the city are adjacent to galleries, modern cafes and bars, or immigrants’ shops. The same variety characterizes the population of this area as well; old people that were working in the factories in the past, artists, students and young couples or immigrants. For this reason, the proposal focuses in the design of small apartments of 60 and 40 m2 that can be adjusted in the various necessities of habitants. Moreover, a small cafÊ and a kid garden are created on the ground floor.
36
37
Principal Idea
The block of flats is located at a corner lot. Therefore, it is chosen to let the corner free as a semipublic area that is used in order to enter to the building. On the ground floor there are a cafĂŠ (front part) and a kid garden (posterior part). Moreover, a pilotis is created as an extension of the cafĂŠ. At the upper floors, there are the apartments of 60 and 40 m2.

The subject of the competition ‘3 ostelli 3 citta’ was the design of two hostel rooms, one for 2 persons and one for 4, and their bathrooms. The solution had to be flexible and furniture should have had the possibility to be adjusted in different rooms of three hostels that are located in 3 cities. The project proposes the design of a modular that can be adapted easily to the various necessities of visitors. Therefore, it is created a microcosm inside the empty hostel room that combines both the idea of familiarity that one feels at home and the curiosity or the sense of adventure that characterizes travelling. This modular is a small metal container, coated with wood in the internal part that includes all the necessary comforts such as a bed, a night table, a desk, a wardrobe, a mirror and a coat rack. One of the positive aspects of this container is the possibility of privacy that the visitor has. Whenever he wants, he can be isolated by closing the steel sliding panel. Moreover, there is the possibility of uniting the beds or placing them one over the other. The construction is moved easily because it has wholes, fact that facilitates the cleaning of the room. On the magnet boarder of ‘roof’ visitor can let posts, notes, photos and a word of advice for next visitors. This connects every room and each modular with the city, where it is placed. 44

Museum of the city of Athens constructional design
Styliani Kazamia, E lisavet Kazerou, Konstantina Koukoulioti Professors: Maria Kafritsa, Panagiotis Vasilatos
The Concept In this project, we were asked to design the new museum of the city of Athens at an empty allotment that is placed at the center of Athens. For this reason, the basic principle of the project is the design of a museum that except of the exhibitions, can host other functions such as, a library, a restaurant and a theatre that can function independently. Moreover, underground there are the traces of the ancient wall of Athens. Thus, another purpose is the emergence of this element.

Architecture of Transparency glass house + psychology Theoretical research project Elisavet Kazerou, Stergios Koutsanitis Professor: Panayotis Tournikiotis
Glass constitutes a useful architectural tool because it offers valuable space features, such as more light and unobstructed view. However, the application of transparency, especially in the case of housing, raises various concerns. Although glass can provide many architectural advantages, one may wonder if the resident of a glass house can feel comfortable and safe in that space. The subject of this lecture is to explore the psychological changes that the life in a glass house provokes. In addition, it is studied the impact that such an architectural option has and the consequences that can bring in public space and society.
54
To begin with, a residence must be primarily a shelter for human; it must separate and protect him from the environment and the dangers of the outside world. However, a glass house cannot create the feeling of safety, since the boundary between the outer and the inner space is fragile. As a result, transparency raises insecurity and transforms the warm and familiar atmosphere of a home in a hostile and uncanny space. Except of the fear that the resident feels, he loses his privacy as well. The glass is converted into a screen and the private life is on display. The stranger can ‘enter’ to his intimacy life fact that makes him to be continuously under surveillance. This situation is by far more intense when this house is in the center of the city. Nevertheless, even in a secluded natural environment, there is always the probability that someone is over there and stares at you, fact that urges resident to an eternal control of himself and his behavior. Therefore, he loses his spontaneity and he puts himself in a continuous inhibition, like in public space. That is a really hard blow for the resident. The home is the only place where one can be completely spontaneous and authentic. Consequently, when this holy space changes or is abolished, human loses the basic means that contributes to the definition of his identity. Thus, the architectural design, in this case, is a control tool that imposes discipline. Gaston Buchelard in Poetics of space, approaches the abstraction of ‘home’ as the shelter of human’s soul. Indeed, house is the place that hosts not only our everyday life but also our memories from past, and our dreams for future. Therefore, an invasion at this holy space is deeper invasion at the mere existence. Glass destroys the serenity of the resident and disrupts his psychological balance. Another crucial question that is raised is whether public space can still function normally and if society can accept the exposure of private life in public space. The structure of society is based on the separation between private and public space and the application of completely different behavior code in each one. Transparency disrupts completely this separation and discountenance society, since a behavior that tends to be hidden inside house is extended to public space. The glass is transformed into a theatrical scene and neighbors into the audience. Furthermore, a strange relationship is created between the person that is being watched and the observer that is watching him. The curiosity for the intimacy life of the neighbor is building up to voyeurism. In conclusion, what should be the role of architecture? Contemporary architecture should follow the traditional standards of home, respecting the current cultural background or should experiment new forms and ways of homing?

Experimental Architecture ‘shell house’ Elisavet Kazerou
For our house is our corner of the world. As has often been said, it is our first universe, a real cosmos in every sense of the word. If we look at it intimately, the humblest dwelling has beauty. Gaston Bachelard, Poetics of Space
The ‘dream house’ of Bachelard is an imaginary structure, where our unconscious finds a shelter. It is a nest that hides all our dreams, our memories, our deeper thoughts. It is a non-real space, an image that represents the archetype of home. Influenced by the study of Bachelard (the poetics of space) and the metaphoric language that uses, – home as a nest, home as a closet, home as a shell – I tried to explore how the real space could reach the unreal one, the space of unconscious. Bachelard cleaves to archetypes that preexist of society and civilization, and can be found in nature as well. Indeed! Ηome, in an imaginary level, is a nest that protects our soul and our existence. In the same way, shell hides a world of dreams, memories and emotions. But shell is more than a nest; shell is the spatial expression of dialectics between inside and outside, between concealed and evident. We can never discover what is hidden in the center of it. We can just enter until a certain point, because there, in the center, it is hidden the most holy part of this structure.
