The design for the Amir Shakib Arslan mosque in the village of Mukhtarah, Lebanon, occupies a renovated cross vaulted space with the addition of a steel structure and a plaza in front.

The slender minaret is formed of thinly sliced steel plates, angled in the direction of Makkah, and linked horizontally through a canopy to a curved wall delineating the entry to the mosque. Atop the minaret, the word Allah (God) is folded biaxially from the minaret, becoming a structural calligraphy rather than a traditional ornamental applique. Seen from one side, Allah is read as solid, from the other side, Allah is read as a void.

Below, at the entry to the mosque, the word Insan (Human Being) is added to the steel plates, to create a Hegelian dialectic of God/Man, putting humanity as an integral part of the equation with God, as a reminder of the humanistic tradition of Islam.

Nestled in an L-shaped site at a busy traffic junction, the development creates a new high quality public space sheltered from the traffic and a new focal point for the high-density F&B, retail, office and residential environment.

The building volume is formed as an extrusion of the site creating a sharp edge to the chaotic urban fabric around it. Carved out of this solid volume is a contrasting soft public space with a series of terraces and courtyards. The new public space allows maximized exposure of the program at ground level while also maximizing natural daylight and ventilation for the offices and residential apartments.

Using computational modeling and analysis tools, the pixelated massing was studied under various programmatic and environmental parameters to create a comfortable external public space by allowing controlled wind infiltration and solar radiation.

Located on a prominent hill in Beirut, the site benefits from an overlooking sea view to the north and a vast view on a unique garden to the west.

The project consists of a mixed-use program with various typologies of residential units, flexible office spaces, an exhibition gallery, a café/ restaurant, a rooftop and a garden.

By extending the vegetation on the facade and connecting the different levels with outdoor circulation, the project celebrates nature and offers a healthy lively environment.

In addition, the apartments benefit from generous terraces, shifted between floors, avoiding repetition, optimizing shade and allowing interaction.

BAOBAB is a residential development and mixed-use project aiming to create a fresh definition of urbanity and sustainable living in the centre of the Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

The distinct urban form of BAOBAB introduces a new level of sustainable design to Abidjan. Its five fingered form is developed to maximize the buildings environmental performance and, like the branches of a Baobab tree, expose each of its apartments to a maximum of daylight, panoramic views and natural ventilation.

The facade has three distinct layers: an outer perforated solar shading screen frames a green inner layer, a continuous veranda for rich planting, balconies and terraces in front of a generously glazed and porous inner facade.

The project consists of allocating accommodation for the staff, managers and supervisors of the Oberoi Hotels beach resort in Ajman.

In order to blend its high density with the surrounding and minimize the impact of the large building, careful design and attention was given on the massing and facade.

A lower block creates the transition with the surrounding buildings, while the higher ten floor block recesses back to form a linear bar, minimizing its impact on the road.

As for the facade, a layer of framing modules is added, creating depth and shadows, reducing the long flat facade into small varied pixels, and randomizing the repetitive openings.

The design for the new art gallery is an adaptive reuse of a historic theatre which is converted into a space dedicated to showcasing prominent as well as up and coming Lebanese and Arab artists.

Located mostly underground, the attempt was to create a smooth transition from the street level to the lower gallery levels while bringing natural light to the buried space.

The new staircase, also reminiscent of theater promenade staircases, cascades its way down to the underground main gallery space from the ground floor, going through secondary office spaces. The cascading nature allows visual continuity between upper and lower levels, and daylight to pierce its way down to the basement.

From the mezzanine floor, the administrative offices, and that of the gallerist, have a full view of the gallery space.

Remomero is an experience created by an Italian couple based in Beirut, sharing their passion for the Mediterranean art, food and wine.

The design challenge consisted on giving shape to remomero's vision, reflecting and translating its components into space, materials, colors and light.

Following the space triangular shape, three zones were defined: The right corner hosts the art gallery and exhibition wall. The left corner presents the food lab with its open-kitchen bar and products display background.

And the central space, facing directly the entrance, offers a long shared table where art and food meet.

The product display wall is a square grid where modular wooden boxes are inserted and can be easily relocated according to the display needs.
