The pleasure of fatigue I
J
guess that almost all of you who read these observations know that I love cycling. I really like it. It’s something I love doing. Perhaps not everyone knows what it is that cyclists love when they get in the saddle. We’re bored on the flat bits, descents leave us cold, but going uphill, that’s what we live for. Why? I’ve wondered about that a lot of times, exhausted at the top of the hill that goes up to Porcarella hidden in a hailstorm with my friend Sauro, or in the middle of the terrible Giau Pass along with another ten thousand crazy people. Why? There isn’t any rational response: I think it’s because I love overcoming difficulties and looking back on the result of my work from the top, from the end of the climb. In the company, it’s the same. I love to face up to difficulties and take them on. Here in Elica, many many many challenges lie ahead of us. One in particular: changing the organization, changing how we work. Breaking down the bureaucracy of the cost centres and everyone’s own little personal backyard and accelerating on the market with clear and coherent responses to all. So, women and men of Elica, make up your minds whether you want to press your feet down on the pedals and pick up speed with me, or change direction and head downhill to the flatlands.
ust a few days left to the summer break and there are still a hundred things to do to properly close the first half of the year. It’s a moment when I feel duty-bound to make an assessment. The market trend is, as we hoped, heading in a positive direction, despite some alarming situations at a macroeconomic and political level that continue to create anxiety. The development of our strategy has enabled us, so far, to make the most of our strengths. Our most recently launched products have been liked, our brand is appreciated and all our “back bone”-sustaining activities are providing the right kind of contribution to development. As I said, however, there’s still a lot we have to deal with in the coming months. Out of all the things going on, two are, for me, particularly important. First, we have to further valorise the Gutmann brand. Our German brand is highly appreciated by consumers and distributors, so we have to invest in it even more to be able to fully exploit its real potential. Gutmann should be next year’s star and, in order for that to happen, we all have to start putting in some intense work right now. Second, but not in terms of importance, in a few days we will be activating the new organizational structure. Whatever the various details regarding positions and who reports to who, the key thing to recall is the spirit that inspired it. It’s designed to bring more empowerment to our structure, increasing delegation within the organization so that it is more “responsive” to market needs – reaction time, as we know, has to be increasingly rapid. The important thing is that everyone gives all they’ve got in order to facilitate the start-up and to make sure that it valorises individual potential in the way we intend. I’d like to round off this message with my own personal best wishes to you and your loved ones: I hope your holidays are full of joy and tranquillity. Come back rested and raring to work! Go, Elica, go!

interview
MAURIZIO LANDINI «the Italian word for union, sindacato, literally means together with justice.»
Maurizio Landini, 54, after working as an apprentice welder in a cooperative in the engineering sector, became an official in the Reggio Emilia branch of FIOM, the metalworkers’ union of the Italian General Confederation of Labour (CGIL). He then became its General Secretary and in 2005 he was elected to the union’s national secretariat. As national secretary he was responsible for the household appliance and two-wheeled vehicle sectors. He led negotiations with companies such as Electrolux, Indesit and Piaggio. In 2011, Bompiani published his book (written together with Giancarlo Feliziani) “Change the factory to change the world – FIAT, the union, the absent left,” a book-length interview in which he recounts the whole FIAT affair, his relationship with Marchionne, with other unions and with the world of politics.

GABRIELE PATASSI Internationalism was the main objective of the left and the labour movement, but today only the internationalisation of capital is truly global. Is it still possible today to create an alternative model of society? Solidarity between the workers of the world remains the basis and starting point for any movement whose aim is to provide freer and fairer employment conditions. Moreover, solidarity and joint action become an even more pressing need in the era of globalisation; one only has to consider how large multinational companies place employees in different countries in competition against each other and .....................................................................
«how the competitiveness of industrial capital today is primarily based around the cost and conditions of work, with a tendency to constrict these as much as possible.» ....................................................................
The transformation of vertical conflict – between companies and workers – into a series of horizontal conflicts – between workers – is now the main force of capitalism, along with the weight of finance on the international economic system. It is no coincidence that ....................................................................
«Sergio Marchionne has repeatedly explained that today’s companies are fighting each other “for survival and that this is a war that involves every person in the company: workers, office staff, executives, managers, who have to fight as one man against the workers, office staff, executives
and managers of their competitor.»
..................................................................... This is the main problem to be addressed, starting with the trade unions in different countries – for those of us here in Europe in particular – who have to overcome the divisions and particularism which our opponents can exploit in order to confirm and extend their dominance in the workplace. With a globalised economy and the speed that information moves at, can a critical response to globalisation really take place through the affirmation of a shifting movementism that gives national responses to international problems? You cannot give simplistic answers to complex situations. Nor is it possible to have national solutions in a globalised world like the present. The crisis of political representation that characterizes our democracies is also explained by the growing influence of financial markets and the economy on the policies of national states. That’s why we have to address the problems at a global level, at least as far as we at a European level are concerned. In your opinion is it true, as some say, that today’s trade unionist has to be an expert in industrial trends and company law rather than in the organization of strikes? A trade unionist must always – today as well as yesterday – know how to listen to and represent workers, understand what their needs and expectations are. From this perspective, things are certainly more complex in terms of the working situation than they were in the past, you have to study and know what workers are faced with and what they have to deal with. But the main point of reference for a trade unionist, the people we have to answer to on a daily basis, are the workers, because without them the trade unionist doesn’t exist. And the strike continues to be a fundamental tool to enforce the rights that it must represent.
Doesn’t submitting an agreement to a referendum delegitimize the representative function of the union? Absolutely no. The union brings its own culture to the negotiations, the opinion of its members and leaders, its own particular point of view; it formulates hypotheses and – where possible – solutions. But the mandate is in the hands of the workers and they are the ones who have the last word on the agreements and contracts that affect them, because it’s their conditions and their lives that are at stake. The union’s job is to find a synthesis between the interests of all the workers and present it to them for judgment, as the very meaning of its name dictates: because
Isolation, loneliness, fear – these are conditions that are increasingly widespread. The people who have to work to live are getting weaker because they are abandoned in the face of huge upheavals, because access to information and technology is far from egalitarian and does not guarantee greater freedom. That’s why collective subjects are so fundamental. It’s no surprise that the history of the labour movement really began when the right of coalition was first practiced and then recognized. And in recent years this has been questioned and placed under attack in the name of market freedom, which they said would guarantee the freedom of the individual. But that’s not how things turned out and that’s not how things are going.
.....................................................................
«the Italian word for union, sindacato, literally means together with justice.»
.................................................................... Should an enterprise that stops creating value be closed or be kept going no matter what the market says? You have to look at what that enterprise means for the communities in which it operates and also what are the causes of its crisis. Closures are too often decided from above regardless of the social value of an enterprise or are purely speculative operations that lead to the closure of businesses that are really still healthy. In this context the role of public bodies (local authorities, governments, community institutions) should be to monitor, intervene and support: the so-called laws of the market are not a state of nature – just the opposite. Easy-to-use technology makes it possible for everyone to be in possession of a lot of information and allows them to create moments of sharing, but don’t you think that, in the absence of strong figures of representation, this is likely to lead people to a state of isolation and therefore to grow weaker? 3

rom 1st July in Russia – in the metropolitan areas of Moscow and St. Petersburg, to be specific – you can use our official website shop.elica.ru. to order an Elica brand cooker hood from the comfort of your own home. The Russian e-commerce project went online recently after months of work, in collaboration with colleagues in the Moscow and St. Petersburg offices. It can’t be denied that it was a difficult project in several respects. Dealing with a web portal from Fabriano for a market so different in terms of consumption habits, language and culture has been an interesting experience for me, but it has also meant a lot of hard work. Moreover, this is the first time we’ve experimented with trying to use the (virtual) market to offer our products directly to end consumers without
identity based, on the one hand, on the painstaking care taken with design, and, on the other, on attention to people. This year the Fondazione Ermanno Casoli has decided to award the XV edition of the Ermanno Casoli Prize to a Chinese artist, Yang Zhenzhong, who created a work involving more than 50 employees at the Shengzhou factory, showing the company’s willingness to export its way of doing business to China. Our customers, in the presence of a large number of journalists and prestigious guests such as the Italian Consul in Shanghai Stefano Beltrame, Shengzhou City Mayor Sun Zhejun, and Shengzhou City Economic Zone Chief Wang Zhefeng, all admired our products and the artist's work. With a 3D printer, Yang Zhenzhong created masks designed to reproduce the appearance of the participants: the latter then had to wear these masks during their usual work shift. This in-company “performance” provided the material for the production of a video which, along with the 50 masks used by the employees and Elica products, was the focus of the exhibition in the Shanghai showroom, which reproduced the atmosphere of the industrial reality in which the work was created. China, where Elica has been present since 2010, represents an important part of the company’s growth
and internationalization. That’s why a targeted development plan been defined in order to valorise the brand and its products, both those imported from Europe and those produced on site. In March 2015, the “Made in China” line was inaugurated, specially designed for the high-end Chinese market, conceived and engineered by an Italo-Chinese team that took the needs of the local cuisine carefully into account: the whole line was produced in the Shengzhou factory.
commercial intermediaries. That’s what I call a challenge! Elica Shop Russia reflects the structural aspects and web design of our e-commerce in Europe, where (in Italy, Spain and Germany) we sell hood accessories, extended warranty services and Marie and accompanying fragrances. Its operation and contents, however, are different. First, Russia has wanted to focus specifically on cooker hoods (with a range that is just a small part of the vast Elica catalogue), though this doesn’t mean that it won’t go on to sell other product categories in the future. As for shipping, that’s the responsibility of a local courier, who has to make sure that the hood gets to the consumer’s home ready for installation on the date and at the time chosen by the buyer. Backoffice operations, order management and content loading will be managed
on site by our Russian colleagues. All in all then, a great team effort that has involved a large number of participants. But that certainly doesn’t mean the work ends there! If anything, we’re just at the beginning... At this very moment, while you are reading this article, we are working hard on making sure that Russian consumers can find us, developing a web marketing strategy. If the site doesn’t pick up much traffic, then the project isn’t likely to be successful. Internet breaks down barriers and has an enormous potential for companies, but it requires structured and ongoing work. And it’s certainly never boring!

IN BARCELONA, ELICA INAUGURATES NEW OFFICES AND A NEW SHOWROOM OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
ARIANUOVA IN BARCELLONA E
lica has taken another step forward in its internationalization process, this time in the significant Spanish market. Elica has been present with distributors in Spain since 2005 and then, since 2010, directly, with Elica España, which employs a network of agents. And now the company wants to get even closer to its Spanish customers. Hence the decision to open new offices, which will be deal with commercial activity throughout the Iberian Peninsula, and a showroom, where the company's leading products can be seen first hand. The offices and showroom are located in the elegant residential district of Sant Just Desvern. The showroom overlooks
the street with four large windows and has a surface area of 270 square metres dedicated to the exhibition of Elica’s stand-out products. These include the cooker hoods Ye, Nuage, Om Air, Amelie, Seashell, Edith and Etoile, and also Marie, the elegant fragrance diffuser that neutralizes odours in the kitchen and naturally perfumes the air in all the rooms throughout the house. ELICA’S UNIVERSITY TOUR IN SEARCH OF 10 TALENTS FOR THE INTERNATIONAL SCENE JULIA SCIUTO
O
n June 3rd, the On Air Academy Tour, Elica’s university talent selection process, set off. The initiative, organized in collaboration with on-line recruitment leader Monster.it, will be stopping in several Italian and foreign universities in order to identify and select ten talents to be brought onto the company staff for international training. After 2014’s positive experience
with the first Talent Day, which involved more than 200 young people, and alongside the other initiatives implemented, which led to more than 30 people joining the company over the last six months, Elica is once again investing in talent through visiting universities. Young graduates will be given the opportunity to directly engage in interviews and selection procedures with Elica HR staff and also to meet
the company’s top management, demonstrating how it can be possible to bring the world of Italian industry and university training together in a truly effective way. 10 graduates will be picked from this selection process for the first step of their development path, which will initially take place at the company headquarters in Fabriano, and then continue at their offices worldwide. The starting point of the tour, which, echoing the historical journey that Elica has followed in its international expansion, will start off locally and then head abroad, will obviously be Ancona. Thereafter, before the summer, it will call in at the Politecnico di Bari and the universities of Aquila and Padua. With the September reopening, it will be the turn of the University of Trento and the Federico II University in Naples and then subsequently the search will move abroad for two days in Poland and Germany.
“Elica has decided to undertake a rather unique kind of selection project – one that reflects the soul of the company,” said Elica HR Director Emilio Zampetti. “Young talents will be able to work in a flexible and highly motivating context, where growth and professional development are constantly accompanied by a solid basis of merit and excellence.” In addition to a 500 euro reimbursement of expenses, Elica will offer the ten selected people the opportunity to stay at a campus in the Fabriano area and allow them to make use of both the company gym and canteen.

"Loft Story" is on air – the new web series in 4 episodes that will star famous Tuscan chef and television presenter Simone Rugiati, engaged in an exciting search for the “right inspiration” to set up an exclusive location to host a large international culinary event. A team of ultra-faithful and entertaining friends is on hand to help out, taking turns dishing up a selection of gags, irony, good food 6
and conviviality. But it will be the advice and guidance of the great international designer Karim Rashid that will illuminate and inspire Simone throughout his journey... The launch of Elica’s new web series has been planned through both digital and traditional media and previewed with an engaging “trailer” on May 15th at the company’s Milan showroom in Via Pontaccio. For the occasion, Simone threw
himself into some spirited showcooking, offering a taster of the magical atmosphere that permeates the story. It’s a multichannel communication project that shows Elica once again demonstrating its willingness to try out new languages and attract a young audience with a keen interest in new media, a confirmation of its innovative mettle and thirst for challenge. Evidence of this
is the extraordinary journey the company has undertaken, which sees it involved not only in the international cooker hood market but more generally in the field of air treatment.

Great success for the inauguration of Breathe Difference - Aria Nuovo from the Third Paradise, the project conceived by Michelangelo Pistoletto and Love Difference for Elica’s Milan showroom. The space was transformed into a place of great visual and sensory impact, thanks to the work New Sign of Infinity, specially created by the artist, and a series of workshops that enlivened our showroom for over a week. The event opened with a talk between Michelangelo Pistoletto, Elica President Francesco Casoli and project curator Marcello Smarrelli, artistic director of the Fondazione Ermanno Casoli. themes that EXPO 2015 is dealing with but also to Michelangelo Pistoletto’s own particular poetic, his constant consideration of food as a factor that, while valorising difference, is also capable of uniting. The New Sign of Infinity is the symbolic synthesis of the Third Paradise of Michelangelo Pistoletto, a concept on which the artist has for years been basing his path as an artist-activist. The artist explains: “The first paradise is where human beings were totally integrated into nature. The second paradise is artificial, developed by human intelligence through a process that has now reached globalizing proportions [...].The Third Paradise project is to lead artifice – that is science, technology, art, culture and politics – to give life back to the Earth, together with the commitment to re-establish common ethical principles and behaviour, on which
the actual success of this objective depends [...]. Third Paradise means the transition to a new level of planetary civilization, essential to ensure the survival of the human race.” And these ideas were also the inspiration behind the series of workshops promoted and coordinated by Love Difference over the week following the opening. The program of activities, aimed at cocreation and the active involvement of participants, touched on “sensitive” and highly topical issues: living space, food and nutrition, sustainability and the development of creative thinking –all themes that Elica and the Fondazione Ermanno Casoli have energetically supported and promoted, in the belief that innovative processes are the very lifeblood of doing business.
