About XYLIA

Timeline XYLIA is expected to be launched by late July 2020.

XYLIA refers to being in the forest, surrounded by nature which is its aim to integrate nature into everyday living. There are an increasing number of plant enthusiasts, living in the crowded cities, who are starting to turn their focus towards sustainable living especially homegrown herbs as sustainable living are being promoted in efforts of cutting down waste. However, herbs can be difficult to grow, depending on the humidity level, weather and so on. XYLIA acts as an combined humidifier and indoor garden ecosystem which can be place anywhere indoors. With an in-built humidifier and light, it not only promote the growth of herbs but also increasing the moisture level in the air to prevent our skin from drying.

Development 1

I took inspiration of the curled handle element in my vacuum cleaner and I developed my forms from there. However, given my brief outline, I realised I could not do those “elegant or small designs for my humidifier since I have to consider plants. For herbs, they need a minimum amount of pot size and depth in order to grow properly - min. 6cm diameter. I ended up with a similar size to my vacuum cleaner. I tried to follow the slanted shape of my previous vacuum cleaner for my pot lid area which resulted in a lot of space issues with my pots and water tank.

2

After adjusting the slanted area and tapering the base layer to make it less bulky, I ended up with a similar shape as my vacuum cleaner which is great since it is supposed to be under the same range. I kept the base layer separated from the main body (2 layers) to keep it consistent since my color scheme is white and grey.

Reflection As a whole project, I find it half a pity and a relief that we had to move our project online due to the pandemic. I found relief in this as model making is quite stressful when we have other submissions to rush as well. However, it was a pity too because I was kind of excited and I looked forward to see the outcome of the physical model. I actually started off confused at which direction I should be going for with my plant humidifier. But I ended up with the plant being herbs based as from what I observed, a few people have been starting to plant their own herbs or vegetables at home (eg. my mum). I was also able to see what kind of issues they face such as unbalanced sunlight.etc. After I proceeded with developing and researching, I felt that I kind of built my own grave as herbs growing are another topic of planting. They have their own requirements like frequent watering, preparation of the soil which can be affected by the pot. Some key points I took can be concluded here: https://www.hgtv.com/outdoors/landscaping-and-hardscaping/how-to-plant-a-kitchen-herb-garden. With my form like a cylinder hangbag, I hit another problem with my water tank as I could not have a removable plastic cap like normal humidifiers. I did visualised it as a pull out tray but I felt that it will disrupt the “flow or the look of the design. After consulting with Ka Wai, he suggested that a turning tray or I call a swivel tray, is possible as long as there is a stopper and a contact surface for powering. I felt that this project has been going quite well except for a few bumps here and there as mentioned above which led to me another issue of technology and software. Online classes mean we did not have the proper laptop systems to handle Keyshot rendering or the softwares required. It is sad but it cannot be avoided. :( Our conatct time together is short but I hope to learn under you again, Ka Wai!!!!! Thanks for teaching us and guiding us since the
