Ragazzi e building that sounds when it rains ThInternazionale News | Star It’s called Neustadt Kunsthofpassage and it’s in Dresden, in Germany. It’s a genial work of art created by the sculptress* Annette Paul and the designers Christoph Rossner and Andre Tempel. The facade* of the building, which is an intense sky blue colour, is covered by a complex system of pipes and funnels* for the water drainage*. Every time it rains, the water that passes through these tubes produces a symphony of sounds. It’s a real concert and the whole building transforms itself into a huge musical instrument. So when there’s bad weather, you just have to stop and admire this show.

Glossary drainage: a system that carries the water away when it rains facade: the external part funnels: cones in which liquid is poured sculptress: a female artist that makes things out of wood, marble twinned: has political, economic and cultural ties with

Dresden is also known by the nickname “Florence of the Elba” (which is the river that crosses it). In fact since 1978 the city has been twinned* with the Italian city of Florence.

WHO SAID IT? Music and architecture are two forms of art and communication which are composed of harmony, balance and proportion. With these words, two centuries ago, a German writer explained the strong relationship that unites them. Who are we talking about? Music is liquid architecture. Architecture is frozen music.

Happy Birthday to….. Beyoncé

(4 September 1981) th

This month Beyoncé Knowles, one of the most popular and wellloved superstars who is often imitated by others, will celebrate her 35th birthday. Last year she celebrated her birthday in Italy together with her husband, the rapper Jay-Z, her daughter Blue Ivy and a group of friends. And this year, who knows where she’ll be spending her special day. Wherever she goes in the world, she’ll be accompanied by the affection of her fans and the tweets that will arrive with the hashtag #HappyBirthdayBeyoncé.

Zac Efron

(18th October 1987)

The good looking boy with the blue eyes from High School Musical, who’s the idol of millions of teenage girls, has grown up and has come a long way since 2006. For his long-term fans he’s still Troy Bolton, the character that made him famous. But in the last few years, Zac - actor, singer and dancer -has appeared on the big screen next to actors like John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Nicole Kidman and Robert De Niro. On 18th October Zac will blow out 29 candles, but for us he will always remain a teen idol!

Bruno Mars

Not everyone knows that his real name is Peter Gene Hernández: “Bruno” was inspired by the wrestler Bruno Sammartino, while “Mars” refers to the singer’s personality that is out of this world! However, when he was young, his nickname was “Little Elvis”, because he always sang the songs of Elvis Presley. His most important musical inspiration was Michael Jackson and among his most important hits* are Just the Way You Are and Locked Out of Heaven. Happy Birthday, Bruno!

Katy Perry

British Traditions

Did you know…..? It’s believed that this pudding dates back* to the 18th century as the first ‘published’ recipe can be found in a 1728 book called ‘The Complete Housewife’. Ingredients • 25g butter • 350ml milk • 8 thin slices of bread • 50ml cream • 50g sultanas • 2 eggs • 2 teaspoons of cinnamon powder • 25g sugar

Bread and Butter Pudding Nowadays everyone seems to love cooking or baking! We’re ‘invaded’ by TV programmes such as Masterchef, Bake Off and other various cookery programmes and as a result everyone wants to become an amateur* chef. In this new feature,we’re going to take a look at some classic British recipes* that have been passed down from generation to generation. So what are you waiting for? Let’s get cooking!

Preparation

Grease a pie dish with butter. Cut the crusts off the slices of bread and spread one side with butter. Cut the slices into triangles and then put them at the bottom of the pie dish. Put some sultanas on top of the bread and sprinkle on some cinnamon. Repeat the layers* until all the bread is finished.

Bread and Butter Pudding is a very simple but tasty British dessert. As you can imagine, its two main ingredients are ‘bread’ and ‘butter’. Maybe to you it sounds like a typical sandwich, but thanks to the other ingredients that are added, it’s a sweet pudding.

When it’s ready, pour this mixture over the bread layers. Leave it to stand for 30 minutes. Finally put the dish in the oven (180c) and bake for 30/40 minutes or until the custard has set* and the top is golden brown.

Did you know…….?

Bread comes in all different shapes and forms, and people around the world eat it more than any other type of food. It’s also very old - it has existed for at least 30,000 years!

Report The world of cinema, fashion and music is ready to welcome the socalled “celebrity kids”, who often – but not always – follow in their parents’ footsteps*. Will they be future celebrities too? Without a doubt, we’re going to hear something about them in the next few years … here are some to keep an eye on*!

Celebrity Kids ‘Important’ surnames

Having famous parents in the world of showbusiness* certainly means living in a privileged situation, but it isn’t always so easy. Talent isn’t automatically transmitted from generation to generation and not all the children of famous stars are able to put up with* the comparison with their parents. Some of them develop different interests and dedicate themselves to alternative projects. Others, however, try to repeat the success of their family members. In your opinion, who will become a star out of these listed below? Who will manage to honour the surname that they have?

Like mother, like daughter!

Kaia Gerber, 15 years old, is practically a mini version of her mum Cindy Crawford, one of the highest paid top models of the 90s. Like her mum, the young Kate is ready to become a catwalk* star. She always appears at ease* in front of the photographers, on the red carpet and on the covers of magazines (she’s even appeared on the cover of Vogue Paris). Her face was used for the advertising campaign for the Versace brand Young and she was a model for Alexander Wang’s Spring/ Summer collection 2016.

The new names in the world of fashion

Georgia May Jagger is a perfect example of a combination between her father Mick Jagger (singer of the Rolling Stones) and her mother, the supermodel Jerry Hall. Distinctive traits - a small gap between her teeth that makes her smile unique. Where have we seen her? In different ads of lipstick and mascara for Rimmel is just one example. Another new star of the fashion world is Iris Law, daughter of the actor Jude Law. She’s recently taken part in her first photo shoot* for the English brand People.

though. His mum Victoria, after being a famous pop star, has created her own clothing and perfume line.

Fashion or music? What will Lourdes choose? Football? No, thanks!

His dad was captain of the English national team and one of the most talented footballers. But it’s unlikely* that Romeo, son of David Beckham and Victoria Adams (one of the five Spice Girls) will follow in his footsteps on the football field. The youngster* has made himself known thanks to the christmas Burberry ad from a few years ago and it seems that he will continue his career as a model. After all David has posed* for names such as Emporio Armani, Adidas and Gillette. Fashion runs* in the family

There’s no doubt: being the daughter of the “Queen of Pop” opens up many opportunities for the future. Madonna and Lourdes Leon, nicknamed Lola, almost seem like sisters and it’s said they have the same strong and decisive personality. Lourdes has been working for years in the fashion world and she appeared in the advertising campaign for the new perfume of the English fashion designer Stella McCartney (she’s also the daughter of famous parents). Who knows if sooner or later she will decide to follow in her mum’s footsteps and move towards the world of music. Let’s wait and see!

Chanel’s muse*…… at the cinema

Honey coloured hair and a sweet smile, Lily-Rose is identical to her mum Vanessa Paradis, but at the same time has something of her dad, the fascinating Johnny Depp, too. At only 16 years old she has debuted as a model for Chanel and then also as an actress acting side by side with her dad in the film Yoga Hosers, and in Planetarium, where she played Natalie Portman’s sister. The fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld said that he finds her «Enchanting*: a young girl of the new generation with all the qualities of a star».

The Beatles legacy

John Lennon’s two sons (Julian and Sean), Paul McCartney’s son (James), George Harrison’s son (Dhani) and Ringo Starr’s (Zak Starkey), who are all musicians, some years ago came up with* an incredible idea - form a band called The Beatles Next Generation to relive the songs of the most influential pop/rock group of all time. Unfortunately the “Beatles 2.0” never happened. However, we can console* ourselves with their solo albums, which will always have a taste of the Beatles in them!

There’s an incredible resemblance between Dhani and George Harrison - he’s an exact copy of his dad at his age. Zak Starkey, a drummer like his dad Ringo, has played with the band Oasis and is currently a member of the legendary group the Who.

WHO IS IT? Now that we’ve met the children of different famous stars, read the clues below and guess who it is!

Interview with…

future forms/past simple/gerunds

She’s got a sweet, angelic face, is not yet twenty years old but is in big demand* in Hollywood. She has very clear ideas about herself and her work, and shares these thoughts with us in this interview. Let’s find out all about her!

Chloë

z t e r o M e c Gra You started your career when you were very young. What was it like being a child actress? Starting to work at a very young age in the world of cinema means having to organise yourself with school and acting. In some periods it was really hard trying to do both things that were equally fundamental for me. At nine years old I started studying at home with a tutor and finally everything was simpler.

You were also lucky to have the complete support of your family, weren’t you? Definitely yes.I have four older brothers, Brandon, Trevor, Colin and Ethan, and Trevor looks after me

full time. He’s an actor too and he’s my acting teacher. I discovered my interest for the theatre thanks to him when I was very young. He accompanies me everywhere, I never travel alone.

Soon you’ll be playing a very dark and problematic role. Is it like you in any way? I feel totally different from many characters that I play, but I have to say that’s it’s really fun and stimulating to become someone that you’re not, it allows me to live other lives. But above all it puts me to the test and allows me to overcome my limits. This is the most important thing for an actor. I want to grow also through my characters.

always ask her for advice about new roles I have to play.

Chloë was born in Atlanta (Georgia - USA) on 10th February 1997. She made her film debut at 8 years old in Amityville Horror. On the screen she has been a superhero martial art expert (Kick-Ass), the best friend of the main character in Hugo Cabret, even a vampire (Blood Story). In 2012 she was directed by the master of the gothic* Tim Burton in Dark Shadows, where she had the chance to act with Johnny Depp, one of her favourite actors. In The Fifth Wave (2016) she’s a courageous sister who fights for the future of mankind* in a world invaded by aliens.

You’ve worked with directors such as Tim Burton and Martin Scorsese, on the red carpet you wear dream dresses, and you’re only 19 years old. Is it difficult to remain a “normal” girl?

Soon you’re going to play Ariel in the eagerly-awaited* film The Mermaid out next year. Can you tell us something about the film and the characters?

the strength that she’s always had, even in difficult situations. As far as work is concerned, Julianne Moore is the actress that inspires me the most. I know her personally and I

In contrast with the 1989 animated Disney version, the film will be based on the original Hans Christian Andersen version. It’s the story of a mermaid who wants to become a human being and fall in love. She’s ready to abandon forever her life in the sea. But Andersen’s fairytale doesn’t have a happy ending. The only thing I can say is that she’s a ‘modern’ mermaid…..

People admire my simplicity* but I’m exactly like that. I’ve seen many young talent lose themselves along the way and this frightened me. I don’t want to be in their place. By now I know the star-system and I’ve learnt that it’s a world full of dangers. The only thing that interests me is giving my all* in my films.

Lately* you’ve become interested in many different themes that are socially important like for example the role of women. Who are your female reference points? The person that I admire the most is my mum. She’s a nurse and I admire

WHAT DID SHE SAY? Chloë declared that when she met Johnny Depp for the first time, she didn’t know what to say. She started laughing nervously and said……..

«It’s really nice meeting you, Mr. Depp!» «I still can’t believe that we’ll work together!» «Hi Johnny… do you know that I like a lot …your necklaces?» The answer is on page 15.
