Robert Samuel, a businessman from New York, has invented an unusual job but by some it could be considered a useful one. His very original idea consists of waiting in a queue for other people and earning money. All those people who don’t have time

September 2nd 1666 The Great Fire of London

On 2nd September 1666 a huge fire started inside a baker’s shop in Pudding Lane, London. The fire spread* quickly because of the wind and also because the houses and building were made of wood. The fire destroyed * the medieval centre of the city and burned down 13,200 houses and 87 churches. One of these was the magnificent St Paul’s Cathedral that was completely destroyed. The social and economic problems caused by the fire were huge, but fortunately the rebuilding of London eventually began and the original street plan was used to rebuild the city as it was before the fire.

September 11th 2001 The World Trade Center

One of the most recent significant events that has happened in modern history was the attack on the World Trade Center in New York. On the morning of September 11th four airplanes flying across America were hijacked*. Two of the planes were flown into the two towers of the World Trade Center in New York, which a short time later collapsed. A third plane crashed into the Pentagon,

(the headquarters* of the United States Department of Defence) and the fourth plane, which was heading for Washington, crashed in the countryside of Pennsylvania. Almost 3,000 people were killed in the attacks including airline passengers, people working in their offices, people on the ground and people working in the rescue services such as the police and fire fighters. In 2006 building of a new tower the One World Trade Center started and will open this year.

October 14th 1964 Martin Luther King gets the Nobel Peace prize

Martin Luther King, who was born in Atlanta in 1929, was a civil rights leader. He fought for the rights of black people in America. At that time black people didn’t have the same rights as the whites and one of these ‘laws’ was that black people had to sit at the back of the bus, not at the front with white people. In 1955 King organized the first major protest of the civil rights movement and that was the ‘Montgomery Bus Boycott’. He believed in non-violence and he was influenced by the Indian leader, Mohandas Gandhi. On this day in 1964 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize at the age of 35. He became the youngest man ever to receive the important prize. The money that he won with the award, around $54,123, he gave to finance the civil rights movement.

The Future is Here Have you ever dreamed of being the star of a science fiction film or having the power of a superhero? Many things that now seem impossible will be a part of our daily life a few years from now. Here are some of the more revolutionary innovations that are about to change our lives!

The clothes printer This is the original invention that the designer Joshua Harris proposed during the Electrolux lab, a recent design competition - the possibility to create jumpers, skirts and trousers in 3D using old clothes, easily at home thanks to a ‌ printer! All you have to do is select a digital design, insert the clothes you want to throw away and the printer will do all the work in real time. It will obtain new thread* from your old clothes and make new models, using the initial image. It’s a very useful idea also for recycling creatively.

The driverless* car Many car companies (Audi, Nissan, Toyota) have announced that the car of the future is almost ready and will soon be available. It will have a particular system of video cameras, radar and laser scanners that can monitor the surrounding space at 360° looking for obstacles, and recognising dangerous situations in order to avoid an accident. A special navigator system will give the car instructions to arrive at the set* destination in a completely automatic way.

The invisible cloak It’ll make us feel like Harry Potter but it won’t use magic formulas. The prototype* has been made by a team of researchers at university in Austin, in Texas. It’s ultra thin and flexible* and works perfectly with small objects. This cloak can ‘hide’ things, making them transparent (and therefore invisible) through magnetic fields that deflect* the light. It’s based on a very advanced type of technology and it’s still in the test phase* but the experts say it’s a real possibility for the near future.

“Electric” clothes Do you know that each part of our body has a different temperature?

Well, The Wake Forest University (North Carolina, USA) is studying a kind of material that’s like a small electric power plant! It’s able to transform the heat from our body into energy and can even make an MP3 player or mobile battery work. And seeing that the difference in temperature can vary as much as 10 degrees, electrical equipment can be recharged just by sitting down and not moving!

A flying suit Jeb Corliss, a 38-year old American, got the inspiration for his suit ‘with wings’ from observing bats and flying squirrels. Corliss, who is a professional jumper, hopes to use it to enable* him to

land without using a parachute, after a few minutes of free fall. It will be another great feat* after his famous jumps from the Eiffel Tower, the Seattle Space Needle and the Petronas Tower in Kuala Lumpur, some of the tallest buildings in the world.

Complete the table. New inventions - what you will be able to do in the future.

Kid | Interview with … What does being a fashion blogger mean to you? Without a doubt it’s an opportunity to set free all my creativity, to get inspiration from everything that surrounds me. In addition, it’s a way to get in touch with* a lot of interesting people. It’s nice to see that the others appreciate* what you do. I’m lucky because my passion is now my ‘work’. What’s your typical day like? In the morning I answer my emails and the comments on all my social network pages ( I’m also on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram), check what’s happening online, read and study the history of art. In the afternoon I organise photo shoots* for the blog – I choose the subject that I want to follow, I work on it and then call a photographer.

Miss Louise Ebel is a young Parisian with a great passion for fashion and the history of art. She unites her two great loves in her blog and proposes a romantic style which is both retro and at the same time very rock.

10

Why did you decide to start a blog? I’ve always been a very shy person and I liked the idea of opening a blog with all my world inside it. It became a sort of therapy*! In the photos there’s only me and publishing them helped me to come out of my shell, to increase faith in myself and overcome* my insecurities. I’ve learnt to get to know myself.

How does a photo shoot work? Usually I deal with everything but when the shoot is more elaborate* my team of collaborators (hairdressers and make up artists) help me. I wear the clothes that I have in my wardrobe and I try to match them in an original and personal way. Also the set is prepared with a lot of care. Everything can take several hours and requires time and energy, but it’s also a lot of fun. What do you like doing in your free time? Visiting museums. Drawing. Writing. I publish one article a week on different topics*. I think it’s a great way to share the passions that get me inspired. Transmitting something to

phrases with get/infinitives and gerunds/nouns

my readers is fantastic, knowing that they get interested in something that I love. Do you ever feel sad or dissatisfied? Certainly, it happens to everyone. When I’m feeling down, I take refuge* in art and in music and I immediately feel better! Who is your favourite painter? That’s a good question! It’s difficult to choose… I love Dante Gabriel Rossetti, I like how he paints women in his paintings.

How do you see yourself in 10 years’ time? I want to become a writer and dedicate myself to art and the history of fashion. I hope to travel and visit New York one day…..but I’ll never leave Paris. I’m in love with this city.

The word “blog” comes from “web-log”, and means “online diary”. www.misspandora.fr

Now you ask the questions! Read Louise’s next two answers and write the most suitable question for each one. ...................................................................................................................................? It’s the visual impact that interests me most about a photo, the emotion that it can bring about*. Physical perfection isn’t important. Beauty is all around us, in art, nature but also in our personality. ...................................................................................................................................?

Glossary appreciate: (here) enjoy bring about: cause to happen elaborate: complicated, detailed get in touch with: connect with, get to know overcome: manage to control or defeat a problem refuge: a place that is safe shoots: (here) take photographs of something therapy: a cure for something topics: subjects

First of all it’s a place to share and exchange things. My blog exists thanks to the advice, encouragement and criticism of my followers. It’s very useful for me to know your opinions in order to better myself and offer a quality product.
