September October

Welcome to our new monthly feature What’s on in the UK? where we take a look at some of the fascinating and unusual events that take place during the year in the UK. You can find festivals and traditions that are rich in history and based on ancient customs and rituals. Read on to find out more!

Murder mystery

Scary spooks

Do you like intrigue* and suspense? Then, this is the event for you! It’s the Agatha Christie Festival that takes place every year in mid-September in Torquay in the South-west of England. The famous murder mystery writer was born in this town in 1890 and the festival is on during her birthday. Her fans come from all over the world to take part in a week of events and performances based on Agatha Christie, her life and her books. You can watch films based on her works, live performances by the Agatha Christie theatre company, visit her house and participate in murder mystery parties and dinners. Sounds fun?

Row*, Row, Row your boat

The annual Great River Race takes place every year on the River Thames and is 34km starting in Ham, London and finishing in Greenwich. There’s just one rule – boats have to be moved using oars* or paddles, not with an engine or sails. It’s a fun and colourful spectacle as participants often wear fancy dress* and each boat has to carry a flag. About 300 boats take part and the public can watch from the bridges along the Thames or from the river bank. Since 2008, all participants are given a GPS tracking system* so that their progress can be monitored by logging onto* the Great River Race website.

If you like being scared out of your wits* then this is the place for you! Nine days of spooky* events at the Ghost Hunts Festival at Oxford Castle. The castle itself is over a thousand years old and has been used in many different ways throughout its history – for example, it’s been a prison, a royal household and is now a hotel. The festival takes place in the original underground dungeons and tunnels of the castle and you can participate in events such as ghost hunts, seminars about ghost hunting, demonstrations by clairvoyants*, psychics and paranormal detectives. Prepared to be scared!

In the town of Perranporth, in Cornwall, in the South-west of England there’s the annual festival of traditional Celtic music, songs and dance. Performers come from Cornwall but also Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Brittany in France and the Isle of Man, which all have links with Celtic traditions. The public can participate in events such as concerts by Celtic bands, storytelling of traditional tales, a costumed parade and a Ceilidhs (pronounced kay-lee) which is a traditional Scottish or Irish gathering* of traditional music and dance.

Historic cars

Goodwood used to be the UK’s most important racetrack (1948 – 1966) and major events were held there including Formula 1. Participants who want to take part in the show must bring a car or motorbike that dates from 1948 to 1966 and they must dress in the fashion of that period. Kid | Report

Is it possible to live without the Internet? It’s called a “digital fast” and means completely giving up smartphones and tablets and living without the ease* (and distractions) of the Web.

Us … and the Web We can’t deny* it: by now we use the Internet to get information, to study, work and play, to chat with friends, to watch films … the Web is a fundamental part of our lives, but someone has tried to give up* all this in order to detoxify the mind and body and demonstrate that you can survive without.

Paul Miller’s experiment Paul Miller is 27 years old and he has spent at least 15 in front of the computer: first as a web designer, then as a journalist specialised in technology. Then, one day he decided to stop. On 1st May 2012 his year without the Web began. He bought an old mobile (just for phoning and texting) and cancelled his internet subscription*.

Life “offline” The first few months without Internet connection were liberating. He had

6

lots more free time for reading, going out and seeing friends, doing sport outdoors and going for bike rides……. he also started writing a book! But with the passing of time he began to feel isolated, bored, depressed. «I felt out of sync* with life», he admits.

Online again On 1st May 2013 Paul went back online, and described his experience on his blog. He’s not the only one to try life without the Internet. Those that, like him, went back online have recounted* the experience. Who knows, however, how many have completely detoxified and no longer use the Net. Their stories will definitely tell a different tale.

gerunds/adjectives/conjunctions

The French: offline and happy For more than 1.7 million French people, living without the Internet is better. The news comes from a study published by the newspaper Le Parisien. In France, above all, young people between 25 and 49 choose to disconnect: the people interviewed affirm that they use the web less than an hour a week and very often for work.

Internet addiction* is extremely widespread* these days. These addicts feel that they can’t do anything without the Web. When we don’t know a word we google it or look for it on Wikipedia. Social Networks absorb a lot of our attention and concentration and we spend hours reading people’s posts and sharing links.

If you also want to try and detoxify yourself from the Web for a while…… To start, you need order and organisation. Here’s what you can do in a few easy steps: block the connection on your iPhone or smartphone, cancel your profile on Facebook and Twitter, turn off Wi-fi, put your iPad in a drawer and pull out the plug*. Trying can’t hurt!

Can you….? Back in 1984 the American psychologist Craig Brod discovered that a prolonged exposure to technology can cause real health problems. The symptoms? Headache, stress, anxiety and agitation, little concentration and physical ailments. Brod gave a name to this new “illness”, and called it … resolve the anagram to find out!

Kid | An anniversary to remember Forty years ago on 2nd September 1973, John Ronal Reuel Tolkien died. He was a valued professor at Oxford University and author of immortal books such as Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. His literary works are read and well-loved throughout the world and continue to be great inspirations for artists and directors.

J.R.R. Tolkien The man and the writer Born in 1892, Tolkien is considered to be the ‘father’ of modern fantasy novels. During his studies he got interested in classical languages (Greek and Latin) and old English. When he was 18 he fell in love with Edith Bratt, who he married in 1916, just before leaving for the First World War. Years later, on a hot summer’s day he got his inspiration – on a blank* piece of paper he wrote “In a hole in the ground lived a hobbit”. This sentence was all he needed to start writing the story and adventures of Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit from the Shire in Middle Earth.

A legendary saga* After the Hobbit in 1937, Tolkien wrote the trilogy of the Lord of the Rings (published between 1954 and 1955),

probably his most important work. The “professor” invented a fantasy world populated by men, wizards, trolls, elves, dwarves and hobbits. He also created a language for his characters - Elvish (with its own grammar and pronunciation), very similar to Finnish. Since then his book has sold more than 100 million copies and has been translated into more than 50 languages. It has been made into a cartoon and since 2001, also a film trilogy.
