Music

Pharrell He’s the latest musical sensation! With his song Happy, he has become world-famous. Pharrell is a musician and music producer all-in-one.

The secret to his success? Friendship and... a little luck Pharrell has had a great passion for music since he was a child. At the age of 12 he met Chad Hugo, who is now also a famous music producer. The two boys attended different schools, but met in jazz class: Pharrell played the drums and Chad the saxophone. A few years later, with two other friends, they created a band called The Neptunes. The group won a local music competition and got noticed by Teddy Riley, the famous rapper. Even though he was still very young, Pharrell produced some of Riley’s songs – and so his career, as a music producer and musician, began.

Interesting facts • Date and place of birth: 5 April 1973, Virginia Beach (Virginia) • Nickname: Pharrell or Skateboard P • Musical instruments: the drums, electric keyboard and guitar • Family: In 2013 Pharrell married Helen Lasichanh, his childhood sweetheart. The two have a son, called Rock Man Williams. • Video: In the video Last Night, Good Night, Pharrell appears as a manga comic character.

Guess! Which of these artists/groups didn’t want to use Pharrell’s songs? A

Beyoncé

What do you want to do?

Do you want to be a journalist? Do you want to write about your school life? Here are five tips for writing a class newspaper.

6

six

1

Do you want to write? Do you want to take photographs? Do you want to draw pictures? Choose what you want to put in your newspaper – but, first, ask your teacher for help.

2 4

What do you want to write about?

Print or online?

Every newspaper has its own characteristics. For example, you can include articles about lessons, student experiences, fun news, sport, or useful information. First, you must choose your topic.

Do you want to write a printed newspaper or an Internet blog? Decide and then choose the number of pages or the number of articles. Then, decide how often you want to publish. Once a month? Once every two months? Consistency is very important: this is the only way to get readers.

3

Organise meetings

Write an article

During meetings you can discuss your own ideas and find out about those of others. This is very useful and you can learn a lot this way.

When you write an article, make sure that the story is clear. You should always answer the following questions: Who? What? Where? How? Why?

5

Word order in questions – use of question words and auxiliaries – the verb ’to have‘ – the present simple – the imperative – adjectives – adverbs of time – the verbs ’to want‘ and ’to be able to‘

................................................................................................................

Write!

................................................................................................................

Use the suggested topics below to write a brief article. Think of a name for the newspaper and a title for the article. Beyoncé • concert • London • July • UNICEF
