Discovery

Isle of Mull What do you know about the Scottish islands? Let’s travel to Mull to meet some of the wildlife and see the sights! Mull is the fourth largest Scottish island and is situated just off the west coast of Scotland. It has a truly ancient history and was first inhabited in the Ice Age!

8

Tobermory is the capital of Mull and its main street is full of houses which are all painted in very bright colours! This island is particulary famous for its natural beauty and the amazing wildlife. For example, you can take a boat trip from Tobermory in the North of Mull to see wonderful sea creatures like whales, sharks, dolphins and seals. Or while you walk along the sandy beach of Calgary Bay, just look up to see a golden eagel or a puffin flying above you!

School life UK: homework clubs What do you do after school? Do you do your homework at home or at school? Lots of kids in the UK attend homework clubs. Let’s find out more. How much homework do you do every day and where do you study? In the UK many children do their homework at school in afterschool homework clubs. Why? There are two main reasons for this: Schools in the UK generally finish at around 4p.m. and often parents finish work at 5 or 6p.m, so it can be a big help for some families if children stay at school

12

a little later; Also, some children simply prefer to study in a place where they can ask for help or support with their homework, or use the library or internet to research things that they are studying.

What? Homework clubs are generally open from when school finishes at 3:30p.m. until around 6:30p.m. You can study for a test, make a model, do Maths or English, Geography or Science, and research information for projects. But that’s not all! Many clubs also organise other activities for kids to do, like sports,

Activity

music, arts and crafts, technology and computer work, and also social games and activities to help children to socialise and have fun. What kids say about their homework clubs... “I like going to homework club after school because I can ask for help if I need it” – Jessica, aged 10 “I prefer doing my homework at home. I can concentrate better when I study alone.” Rebecca, aged 9 “We enjoy our homework club because we help each other. And after we finish our homework, we can play in the playground or read books in the library.” Alfie and Jack, aged 8 and 10

The little road safety code

Road signs

Illustrazione: Cristina Spanò

Do you know the rules for travelling around your city? There are a lot of road signs: coloured circles, triangles, squares and rectangles everywhere.

A red circle tells you what you can’t do: for example, you can’t turn left or right.

A red triangle means there is danger: for example you have to be careful, maybe there is an animal or some children crossing the road.

A square or rectangle give information: there is a pedestrian crossing, a hospital, a train station...

Tassa Riscossa/Taxe Perçue

A blue circle means you must go straight ahead, turn right or turn left...
