Story Corner

My favourite season

Today, the Ready friends are enjoying the end of the summer at Forest Farm. They are playing in the sun, but Charlotte is a little sad. What’s the matter Charlotte? Don’t cry!

I’m sad because summer is ending. I love the sun.

Charlotte cries and Robby tries to make her feel better.

10

Which is your favourite season, my friends?

Hattie explains that there are four seasons in the year.

I don’t like summer very much… I’m too afraid of storms!

You’re right, Hattie! I prefer autum, when the sun plays hide-and-seek with the clouds.

Hattie tells Charlie why she doesn’t like summer very much.

So… Hattie doesn’t like winter, summer or autumn.

11 Illustrator: Laura Deo

Hattie doesn’t like winter because it’s too cold.

Gracie, I don’t like bad weather so… Hattie, do you prefer autumn or spring? Dylan is very hot and he loves water. But what’s he doing?!?

Well done Charlie! In winter it’s too cold, in summer it’s too hot, but in spring … the weather is good!

… so her favoutite season is spring!

Well done, Charlie! You’re right!

Robby is very hot. He drinks an orange juice in the shade under the tree. … a multi-coloured rainbow appears. It’s beautiful!

I love it when it rains, because then…

And you, Robby? Which is your favourite season?

I like winter, when it snows and the wind blows through the trees.

H is for‌ Harvest Festival! Every autumn towns and cities in the U.K. celebrate something called Harvest Festival. Let’s find out more‌ Harvest is the time when food like fruit, corn and vegetables are collected, usually at the end of the summer. During a Harvest Festival people usually bring gifts of food, like fruit, vegetables, pasta and rice, to schools or churches in their town. food is then divded and distributed in the commuity to sick and poor people. Many schools also collect money for charities. In schools, children learn about food and the importance of good nutritian, and they talk about life in countries where food is difficult to grow and what they can do to help. Children

Do you celebrate something similar in your country? also learn which fruit and vegetables are typical during the different seasons and why it is important to use ‘seasonal’ fruit and vegetables. For example, in the U.K. typical winter fruits and vegetables are apples, onions and leeks, but in spring carrots, strawberries and spinach are common. Summer fruit and vegetables are lettuce, peas and blueberries, and in autum we use more cauliflower, sweetcorn and pears … and pumpkins, of course! Many other countries around the
