Sharing means dividing the use of resources or space, like a car or a house. Sharing is also a very important value which reminds us of the values of generosity, love and friendship. If there are moments of economic crisis in the world, people unite to help each other and feel closer! Let’s look at some positive examples of the economy of sharing... Your car... The first idea of organised sharing was invented in San Francisco for sharing cars. If you don’t want to have a car in your garage, a car-sharing service allows you to book a car to use only when you need it. This is different from car-pooling, which is when you travel with other people who make the same journey as you, with just one car. In both cases, you can save energy and money and you certainly pollute the environment less! 6

It’s called couchsurfing, which is like a hospitality exchange* of houses of people who are registered on the website www. couchsurfing.org. If you want to have a holiday in a new place, you’ll find someone who can offer you their sofa in the place you want to visit!
... and food too! In Germany there is a new, very original web platform*: it’s called food-sharing and do you know what it offers? Yes, that’s right: sharing your food! If your fridge is full of things that you can’t manage to use because you are going away or you have leftovers* from a dinner, rather than throwing them away, you can give them to someone else! The only rule
What about our clothes? Sharing clothes isn’t possible, unless you share them with your brothers or sisters! But you can exchange clothes and accessories* with other people. You just need to organize a meeting online or at home and follow the philosophy of swapping! This way you can have a wardrobe makeover* without spending any money! The idea comes from Manhattan and it has become popular all over the world, and its aim is to recycle clothes which no longer fit or are out of fashion.

Edinburgh Castle This famous tourist attraction dominates the capital city of Scotland. Let’s find out more about Edinburgh Castle. It is probably the most well-known structure in Edinburgh and it is certainly one of Scotland’s most visited tourist attractions. This historical landmark is situated high up, on Castle Rock, in the centre of the city. Castle Rock is part of an extinct* volcano! The site has been home to royalty since the 12th century and since then the fortress and castle have
changed and grown into what we now see today. In 1861 a “Time Gun” was placed in the north side of the castle. This was a large cannon which was fired every day at 13.00hrs to let sailors in Leith Harbour know the precise* time. It is still fired at the same time every day, except Sundays and Good Friday* and Christmas Day!

Dear Tot, My name is Charlie and I’m 15 years old. I’m writing to ask for advice about something very embarrassing. When I meet new people for the first time, I’m very shy and I turn very red. I really want to be more confident and fun when I meet people, but I just can’t. Even when my teachers ask me questions at school, I turn red and I can’t answer! How do you think I can stop turning red and start being more relaxed with people? Please help!

Maybe you don’t realise, but there are so many teenagers just like you who are shy and turn red! We always look at the people who are fun and confident, but not everyone is like them! You could take an acting course to learn to become a little less shy: you know, a lot of famous actors were really shy teenagers like you! An example? Justin Timberlake! Acting helps you feel more confident and less embarrassed. But remember that shyness is not a bad thing, it’s just a part of your character, which some people like a lot. Many people prefer to have a friend who is shy because shy people are often very sensitive and are good listeners who understand others easily. So really … you are an ideal friend!

In this edition of Tot we look at a very useful invention for the winter season. That’s right …. It’s the invention of the umbrella!
Samuel Fox Samuel Fox was born in Bradwell, Derbyshire in Great Britain on 17th June 1815. Samuel became a successful businessman and industrialist and opened a steelworks* in a nearby town called Stocksbridge. In 1851, with his company Fox Umbrella Frames, Samuel Fox developed the “Paragon” umbrella frame, which was made from steel. Of course, the umbrella was invented many years before that, in fact it was a very common item even in Ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt where it was generally used to protect people from the sun, rather than the rain. However, Samuel’s design and production was quite unique* and it became the most famous and most common type of rain umbrella. It was sold worldwide and continued to be produced until 2002! Umbrella Facts Did you know? • Umbrellas were first used by women in Ancient Greece in the 5th Century BC. Men did not use them as they were considered a female accessory! • In the 1700’s umbrella frames were not made from steel, but from whalebone! 16
