Report 7 Art takes to the streets

The famous Statue of Liberty arrived in New York, 130 years ago. It was built in Paris to a design by sculptor Bartholdi and entitled “Liberty Enlightening the World.” The French donated the statue to the United States of America as a sign of friendship between the two peoples, and in memory of the American Declaration of Independence of a century earlier (1776). It was transported by sea, and because there was insufficient money to construct the base, the New York Times launched a public collection fund.* They

reached the target within a few days! For years, the statue was a symbol of hope for millions of immigrants arriving in the United States and today it remains one of the most famous monuments in the world.

Yosemite National Park is best known for its waterfalls*, but inside the 3,026 square kilometres, you can find deep valleys, grand meadows*, ancient giant* trees, and vast* wilderness.

Yosemite National Park, California

California’s treasure

Yosemite National Park is located in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains. It’s famous for its enormous trees, and iconic* panoramas. You can go camping, hiking and climbing in the valley year-round. When you have finished enjoying nature, visit Yosemite Village, where you can go shopping, have lunch at a restaurant, or visit the Yosemite Museum. The Ansel Adams Gallery is also very popular with visitors. It sells prints of the Ansel Adams’ famous black-and-white photographs of Yosemite.

A popular destination

Yosemite Valley represents only one percent of the park area, but this is where most visitors arrive and stay. Photographers love Yosemite. The Tunnel View is the first view of the Valley for many visitors and is the most popular spot to take a photo. Climbers also love the park. El Capitan, a prominent granite* cliff*, is one of the most popular rock climbing destinations in the world.

The high country of Yosemite contains beautiful areas of meadows, encircled by high mountain ranges. Mount Lyell is the highest point in the park, standing at 4,000 metres. The Lyell Glacier is the largest glacier in Yosemite National Park and is one

of the few remaining in the Sierra Nevada today. Yosemite is a ‘must’ for anyone who loves trees. The park has three groves* of ancient giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) trees. These trees are enormous – the giant sequoia grows larger than any other tree, and it lives a very long time!

Art takes

to the streets

Street art has demonstrated its importance and cultural value over recent years. Who are the main figures behind this innovative art form?

Free the art!

Street art is becoming increasingly visible and valuable, for art lovers and critics. Its creators are true masters, able to carry out large-scale works with a strong visual impact*. Some street artists create their works to convey a critical social or political message, others to expose their art in open spaces, where everyone can see it. The rule is: Free the art!

Street art: from America...

Street art (or urban art) includes all forms of art that are created in public places. There is a range of techniques: spray cans, stickers, stencils, video, and sculpture. It differs from graffiti,

which is only done with spray paint and always starts with a letter (tag). Street art began in American in the 80’s, as an underground phenomenon, and today it’s so loved that even advertisements and marketing copy it! 7

The strong messages

Two of the most famous street artists in the world create works with messages that are very critical of society and the world’s problems: ROA and Blu. ROA is Belgian and paints in black and white. He mainly depicts giant animals, from the local area, that are suffering*. This is to remind us that our animal friends should not be mistreated, but respected. Blu, on the other hand, is Italian and his works express his thoughts on war, capitalism and pollution – they are very direct and raw*.

... to Banksy

Banksy, the English artist whose real name nobody knows, has spread street art throughout Europe. His art, done with spray paint, first appeared in Bristol and now can be found across the world (even in the cages at Barcelona zoo!). His stencils tell of his thoughts on politics, culture and ethics*. His works convey messages of freedom and pacifism, often through slogans, but his most notable creations are Rats (an anagram* of ‘arts’); the rodents that Banksy has painted all around London.

Art transforms churches

Okuda San Miguel is a Basque* artist, renowned for his originality, who brings abandoned buildings back to life. For example, he has filled some former churches in Spain and Morocco with colourful murals. After he transformed Kaos Temple, an old church in Asturius, into a place that is loved by skaters from around the world, he took part in the Truck Art Project, together with other street artists. 100 trucks were transformed into travelling museums that now travel Spanish roads to spread the message about culture and pop art. 8

Dubai Walls

The first street art festival in the Middle East, takes place in Dubai and is an exceptional event. Dubai Walls aims to introduce innovative art to a very traditional country. Last year, Frenchman Blek le Rat and American Ron English took part. Many say Ron is the heir to Andy Warhol. Known for mixing the faces of famous people with historical paintings into his works, Ron English has exhibited his own version of Guernica by Picasso. His version included Mickey Mouse and Tony the Tiger from Kellogg’s cereal!

What artists do you love, and what inspires you when writing your songs? I love many artists, including Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz and Jay-Z, although I don’t listen to any one genre in particular. I like many different styles. I owe thanks to Justin Bieber, who gave me the chance to play guitar and open his concerts in 2013. Today, we’re good friends, after performing a few singles together, like Home to mama, as

a duet*. My songs come from everyday life, from things that happen to me – I’m always full of ideas! Is it true that you were bullied as a child? It is very true. L At school, the bullies* were very cruel* and they made fun of me because I wanted to become a singer. In their opinion, everyone had to have the same interest – playing rugby – while I only loved music. Today, I’m committed to the fight against bullying and cyber bullying. I also support Build-a-bear and the right of all children to play. What advice would you give to your fans? I know how difficult it is to suffer at the hands of bullies, but when you manage to win against them you will feel much stronger and mature. Don’t worry about what others think of you!

Do you feel very close to your family? Yes, I like to spend time with my brother, Tom, who is 12 years old; my sister Alli, who’s a year younger than me; and with mum and dad and my beloved dog. Do you miss your Australian friends? Of course, now that I live in Los Angeles, I miss them a lot. Luckily, we can communicate via phone, Facebook, email and other ways, although it’s not the same. I am a tactile person*, who likes hugs. Actually, to meet up with them... I’ve made many 16 hour trips to Australia. J
