The Artists city It is, perhaps, the craziest gathering* in the world and takes place in the stunning* landscape of a pre-historic lake, The Black Rock Desert in Nevada. People come from all over the world to The Burning Man Festival (named after the rite* of burning a large wooden figure) to meet in a city which only exists for one week, every year. The city is divided into areas, which have a theme. Each area has artistic and social activities, installations and works of art. Everybody is free to express themselves. It is like a big party but also a social experiment. There are no spectators, everyone participates and expresses their own creativity. www.burningman.com

How animals help us all
It is easy to love some animals, puppies, kittens, even lion cubs. We know that the preservation of all types of animals and plants in our world is important for the survival of the Earth. Each animal and plant in the world is essential to the world’s ecosystems. Here, we discover some particular ways animals help.
Vultures Vultures are not very beautiful animals and in films and books they usually do not have a positive image! They are ugly grey scavengers* who live on the carcasses of dead animals. However, vultures are vital for cleaning up decomposing animals. The vultures’ digestive systems can neutralize dangerous bacteria that they eat and stop infections spreading*. So vultures are recyclers. That’s not something most of us know! www.bbc.com/future 4

A vulture Sea Otters Now let’s look at a more attractive animal, the sea otter. Sea otters are found on the seashores* of Alaska, Canada, Russia and Japan. They are a keystone species, which means they are a species which is more useful to their environment than other species. Sea otters live, sleep and eat in the kelp* forests. Kelp forests absorb* a lot of carbon dioxide. Sea otters eat sea urchins* which eat and destroy the kelp forests. They love sea urchins. Most other sea animals find sea urchins too difficult to eat. So, sea otters eat their favourite food and also protect the kelp forests and the environment! www.bbc.com/future Animals Helping Man Finally, a great story about how Giant African Rats help to find
unexploded mines. Rats are not normally seen as useful. This story could help you change your mind* about rats. A humanitarian organization has trained Giant African Rats to find mines in

A carbon footprint is a calculation of how much carbon dioxide you make and how much energy you use. Do you travel to school by bicycle or by car? You can use the carbon footprint website to see how you can help stop global warming. Good luck helping the planet! www.cooltheworld.com

Penultimate If you like to use notebooks to make notes and drawings, you will love this app. You write digitally with a stylus* on the screen; as if you were writing with paper and ink. This fantastic app helps you to make notes, write your thoughts and ideas or drawings. You can do this anywhere, in class, on the sofa or when you travel. It is simple to use and it organizes your notes separately into moleskin notebooks*. The notebook pages can be divided by subject and you can look through the pages quickly and zoom in on detail. You can write or draw in black, white or coloured gel ink. Also, you can move images onto the pages or create your own

\ REPORT A new school year begins and you would like new pencil cases and backpacks! What if this year, instead of buying everything new, you try recycling and brightening up* your school materials? It’s time for some imagination and creativity!
Get creative for school
It is the same old story, every September. Your backpack is dirty and ripped* and also your pencil case is covered in doodles* and ink stains, but your Mum and Dad do not want to buy everything, again! Today, I would like to teach you how to recycle your school materials, with a little imagination and handiwork*: Let’s start!
What do you need? • a ruler • coloured markers • a hot glue gun • scissors and adhesive tape • tape and coloured paper • material of your own choice (checked shirt, jeans, coloured material, canvas…)

\ report Washi Tape Have you ever heard of Washi tape? At the moment, it is very fashionable for recycling and handicrafts. It is a simple decorative tape which comes from Japan and is made of different types of paper. It comes from Asia; wa means Japan and paper, which is rice paper and the colour effect

is almost transparent. The main advantage is that you can reposition it. Also, the objects you decorate are completely transformed and brightened up by the tape’s wonderful colours. You can use Washi tape on your diary and any school materials and they will look unique!
Backpacks A worn out* backpack looks well-loved. However, if it is broken, you could lose something! Firstly, wash it, then, use pieces of material to cover the damaged parts. Use a hot glue gun to stick* the material on. You can use jeans, old skirts and shirts, to create a completely original looking backpack. Covers and notebooks Would you like new, fun covers for your books and notebooks? You can use wrapping paper or newspapers. Fix the corners with adhesive tape. Then use fabric, cut into shapes, glue on beads or use markers, glitter or fluorescent colours to create an individual look! Another idea is to use .... photocopied book covers to decorate your books. If you are a Harry Potter fan, you could make a cover entitled ”Potions and the Magic Arts!” Or instead, use decoupage and stick dried leaves onto your science book or cut out poetic phrases for your literature book. Studying will become more fun! Pencil cases and pens You can stick on* patches on your pencil case in the shape of a ladybird, a daisy* or a guitar.
Puzzle Work out this word puzzle and discover a quote from the French writer Marcel Proust.
The art of recycling is important because it makes you use your imagination and society and the environment benefit, too. In Damascus, which is one of the most tormented cities in the world, due* to a terrible civil war, a 720 square metre mural was created. The work of art is made of recycled objects gathered by artists and children in the city. It is the largest mural in the world!
Create a patchwork pencil case using shaped pieces of fabric or stick on large coloured buttons. Are your pencils boring? Stick on pieces of comics and coloured paper to make them original or vintage. Make your own stamp You can make your own stamp to sign your writing paper, birthday cards and letters. Cut out a small piece of polystyrene, about

Glue the piece of polystyrene onto the bottle top, wait a few minutes and your stamp is ready. Meanwhile, get a sponge and put some coloured poster paint on it, and then the fun begins!

Selena Gomez She is a star of many talents: she has had success in the worlds of cinema, music, fashion and is very involved in social issues. You have been famous since you were a child (Barney and friends with your good friend Demi Lovato and various other Disney series). How do you feel now? I have grown a lot. Everyone has experiences which make us grow, I have done the same, but at a faster pace*! What‘s strange, is that sometimes I feel as if I were a fifteen-year-old, and sometimes I feel as if I were older! When I became famous I wanted to do something useful and be a good example. I have been working with Unicef for many years and I often go away on trips with them to help children. What are you like? I am quite moody*, sometimes I feel very strong, other times I

feel fragile. I often feel sad about unimportant things and I worry about being misunderstood. I have learnt to smile at the right moments and to always be polite and kind. My latest album, Stars dance, explains that I am a young woman who has clear ideas, many dreams and a lot of fears. You are an actress, singer, fashion designer… how do you do all of this? I absolutely love what I do, even if I sometimes feel tired. As I am only 20 years old, I always find the energy to go for my goals*. Obviously, sometimes I would like to go shopping and have a laugh with my friends, instead of working. I adore fashion and I find inspiration everywhere I go. Why do you never talk about your private life? I explain my rules when I meet journalists, no photographs, no questions about boyfriends, Justin Bieber or famous friends. I am young, but I can be very serious and determined. I want to protect my privacy, my life is precious and I don’t want everyone to know everything about me. So, do you like social networks? I do and I don’t. I post photos of myself with my fans on Instagram and I write about my everyday life on Twitter, mostly for the “Selenators,” my greatest fans.
