CONGRATS SYDNEY AND MATTHEW!

2019 Drive Chip and Putt National Finals

Congratulations to Junior Tour members Matthew Vital (Bethlehem, PA) and Sydney Yermish (Wynnewood, PA) for their performance at the 2019 Drive Chip and Putt National Finals at Augusta National Golf Club. A 253 yard drive, a chip-in and a holed putt helped Vital capture the Boys 12-13 Division with 26 total points, 2.5 more than the second place finisher. The chip-in also helped Vital win the chip skill for the division as well. Vital’s day was capped off with 1998 Masters champion Mark O’Meara handing him the trophy. She just needed one swing, but a drive of 235 yards was enough for Sydney Yermish to win the drive skill of the Girls 12-13 Division. Yermish finished in 5th overall in the division over some tough competition, including fourtime qualifier Vanessa Borovilos.

Know the Rules

What’s it all about? Rule 14.3c applies whenever a player must drop a ball in taking relief under a Rule. How does it work? Anytime a player must drop either their original ball or another ball in a relief area it must be dropped in the right way. First the player must choose his or her reference point. Next the player will need to identify the relief area which is either one or two club lengths to either side of the reference point no nearer to the hole. Last the player must drop a ball straight down from knee height. Once the ball comes to rest in the relief area the player has completed taking relief. Rule 20.1c In Action: John’s ball comes to rest on a sprinkler head in the middle of the fairway. He decides to take relief (Rule 16.1b) from this immovable obstruction. First, John marks his reference point directly behind the sprinkler head with a tee. He then takes his longest club other than his putter and measures one club length to the left and places another tee at the end of his club. Next he drops a ball straight down from knee height and it lands in his relief area but rolls closer to the hole. John picks his first dropped ball up and repeats his drop. This time the ball comes to rest within the relief area. John’s ball is now back in play and he has completed taking relief from the immovable obstruction. If John’s second drop also rolled forward of his reference point he would have had to place the ball within the relief area to complete taking relief (Rule 14.3c(2). Why is Rule 14.3c Important? Rule 14.3c is important because if you make a stroke at a ball that was dropped in the wrong way you will be assessed a 1 stroke penalty. Also if you make a stroke at a ball that rolls out of the relief area you are playing from the wrong place and will be assessed the general penalty of 2 strokes (Rule 14.7).

KNOW THE RULES—RULE 20.1c

14.3c: Ball Dropped in Right Way Must Come to Rest in Relief Area
