The 43rd Girls Jr. PGA Championship was held July 9-12, 2018 at Kearny Hill Golf Links in Lexington, Kentucky. The 144 player field included some of the top junior girls in the country. Players qualified for the event either by exemption or through their local PGA section championship. Both the Philadelphia Section PGA and Philadelphia Junior Tour were well represented at the championship with 3 players from the section in the field. Phoebe Brinker (Wilmington, DE), Kaitlyn Lees (Bryn Mawr, PA), and Jennifer Cleary (Wilmington, DE) were the PJT members in attendance at Kearny Hill Golf Links. Phoebe Brinker finished her week with a 36-hole total of 154 (+10). Brinker came in with a 74 (+2) for the first round, and 80 (+8) for the second round. Over the two days, Brinker recorded 4 birdies. Kaitlynn Lees finished the tournament in a tie for 43rd place with a 72-hole total of 290 (+2). Lees had a very strong showing at the Girls Jr. PGA Championship, which included two under-par rounds. Lees shot 68 (-4) in round 2 and 71 (-1) in round 3. Jennifer Cleary completed the tournament in a tie for 57th place with a 72hole total of 294 (+6). Cleary started the tournament off on a strong note with two consistent rounds of 72 (E). During the third round, Cleary shot 71 (1). Cleary was the winner of the Philadelphia Girls Jr. PGA Championship at Riverton Country Club (Cinnaminson, NJ) earlier in June.

Know the Rules KNOW THE RULES—RULE 26-1

26-1. Relief for Ball in Water Hazard What’s it all about? Rule 26-1 states if a ball is found after having been struck toward a water hazard or if it is known or virtually certain that a ball that has not been found is in the water hazard ( whether the ball lies in water or not), the player with penalty of one stroke may take relief. How does it work? If the ball is found in a water hazard or if it is virtually certain that a ball that has not been found is in the water hazard you may; (a) proceed under the stroke and distance provision of Rule 271 by playing a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played, (b) Drop the ball behind the water hazard, keeping the point at which the original ball last crossed the margin of the water hazard directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind the water hazard the ball may be dropped, (c) as additional options available only if the ball last crossed the margin of lateral water hazard, drop a ball outside the water hazard within two clublengths of an not nearer the hole than (i) the point where the original ball last crossed the margin of the water hazard or (ii) a point on the opposite margin of the water hazard equidistant from the hole. When proceeding under this rule, the player may lift and clean his ball or substitute a ball. Rule 26-1 In Action: A par 4 has a pond in front of the tee. John hits his shot into the bank of the pond on the other side . When they approach the spot where they believe the ball is, there is no sight of John’s ball. John states under rule 26-1 he may take a one stroke penalty and take relief from the water hazard. John then goes back to the tee re– tees the ball and continues to play under a 1 stroke penalty. May John re-tee with a one stroke penalty even though his ball entered into a water hazard? Answer: Yes, the player may proceed under the stroke and distance provision of Rule 27-1 by playing the ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played. This is one of the many options of taking relief from a water hazard. Why is Rule 26-1 Important? Understanding rule 26-1 is important because if you understand this rule, you can use it to your advantage by knowing the many different options you have when taking relief.
