Know the Rules 16.1b: Free Relief from Abnormal Know the Rules
Course Condition in General Area What’s it all about? Rule 16.1b applies whenever a player needs to take relief from an abnormal course condition in the general area.
How does it work? Anytime a player’s ball comes to rest in an abnormal course condition in the general area, the player may take free relief by dropping the original ball or another ball within one club length from the reference point, no closer to the hole.
Rule 16.1b In Action: Tyler’s ball comes to rest in an abnormal course condition, marked off by a circle painted white. Tyler realizes that he cannot play his shot, so he needs to take relief from the abnormal course condition. Tyler sees that the nearest point of relief is directly in front of the circle, so he decides to drop his ball. His ball lands within one club length of his reference point, no closer to the hole. Tyler then can proceed to take his next shot, without any penalty given to him.
Why is Rule 16.1b is Important? Rule 16.1b is important because it allows the golfer to take free relief so he can have the best opportunity to make his golf shot. Since the players’ ball landed in an abnormal course condition, it is unfair to the golfer to have to play his shot off of that surface. Therefore, Rule 16.1b allows the golfer to take free relief from that area.
2019 Harry Hammond Invitational (Penn Oaks Golf Club, West Chester, PA) 8/6/19—A yearly tradition on the PJT, the Harry Hammond Invitational will be hosted by Penn Oaks GC where the tournament’s namesake serves at the Director of Golf. The event, which is an invitational, is open to any PJT member aged 16-18 who has finished 1st or 2nd in their age division in a PJT tournament in the last 2 years. Harry Hammond is a past Philadelphia Section Golf Professional of the Year (1991), past Section President (1986) and past Junior Golf Chairman.
2019 Philadelphia Junior Tour Championship (Coatesville Country Club—Coatesville, PA) 8/19/19—The PJT’s year end event and flagship event, the Tour Championship, is headed to Coatesville CC for the first time. A historic club, the par 71 Chester County layout will host the Tour Championship for the first time in 2019. This 18-hole event marks the end of the season and 2018-19 Player of the Year points race and Scoring Average leaders.
2019 Under Armour Jon M. Pritsch Cup (Saucon Valley Country Club—Bethlehem, PA) 8/23/19— Another yearly tradition played in memory of Jon M. Pritsch. This year we have the honor of hosting the Ryder Cup style event that pits twelve juniors from the Philadelphia Section PGA against twelve juniors from the New Jersey Section PGA at Saucon Valley Country Club’s Weyhill Course.
