2019 PGA Reach Diversity Scholarship Winners

PGA REACH Philadelphia Announces 2019 Diversity Scholarship Winners PGA REACH Philadelphia, the charitable arm of the Philadelphia Section PGA (PPGA), has announced its 2019 Philly Junior Tour Diversity Scholarship winners, including: Kendall Gordon of Burlington, NJ, Darius Laws of Wilmington, DE, and Jasmine Reed of Westchester, PA. PGA REACH Philadelphia created the scholarship program to provide opportunities for individuals from diverse backgrounds to participate on the elite Philadelphia Junior Tour (PJT) circuit for kids ages 18 and under. “PGA REACH Philadelphia is proud to provide scholarships that will inspire youth in our community by providing a program designed to promote social skills, self-esteem, leadership, and athleticism through the game of golf,” said Leila Mackie, Foundation Director, PGA REACH Philadelphia. “This year’s scholarship winners were chosen among many other youth golfers who applied, and they were selected based on their academic success, passion for the game based on a written essay, and references from coaches and teachers.” Highlighting the 2019 scholarship winners, Kendell Gordon is a 14-year old honor student who also plays competitive basketball. He previously participated in the Philadelphia Junior Tour and already has experienced success in his age group. Darius Laws, age 14, has played golf since he was six years old and has volunteered at The First Tee Program for 8 years. He is an honors student and is devoted to helping others with the skills he’s attained through golf. Jasmine Reed, age 14, has participated in local golf programs from the age of twelve and demonstrates impressive skills in the sport. She overcame a concussion diagnosis and continued to volunteer as a mentor for beginner youth golfers. The Diversity Scholarship program is one of many programs and initiatives managed by PGA REACH Philadelphia, designed to positively impact lives through the game of golf. Under the guidance of the PPGA’s more than 880 PGA Professionals and Assistants located in Eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey (Trenton – south), Delaware and parts of Northern Maryland, who are at the forefront of golf programming that grows the game of golf at more than 300 public and private golf facilities, PGA REACH Philadelphia’s goal is to grow the game by providing financial assistance, instruction, instructional materials, mentoring, equipment and scholarships to individuals and organizations throughout the region.

Know the Rules 19.2: Ball in Unplayable Area How does it work? Anytime a player must take an unplayable, the player has three options. First, the player may take a stroke-and-distance penalty by playing the original ball or another ball from a relief area based on where the previous stroke was made. Next, the player may take back-on-the line relief by dropping the original ball or another ball in a relief area based on a reference line going straight back from the hole through the spot of the original ball. Finally, the player may take lateral relief two club lengths from the reference point. Rule 20.1c In Action: Alyssa’s ball comes to rest in a bush 10 yards off the fairway on her second shot. She decides that the ball that is stuck in the bush is unplayable, so she will put the unplayable ball rule (19.2) into action. Alyssa sees if she has a good shot at the hole if she uses the third option in rule 19.2, which is lateral relief from the bush, two club lengths to the right or left. She sees that if she does that, she will not have a good shot at the green, so she decides to choose option 2 of rule 19.2, which is taking back-on-the-line relief from the bush. Due to the rule, Alyssa has to play her ball farther back from the hole than where her original second shot was played from. She sees that she has a good shot at the green from this spot, and decides to take a drop within a one club length relief area from where she has to play her next shot, and will be assessed a one stroke penalty. Why is Rule 6.3c Important? Rule 19.2 is important because it has three options the golfer can use to his or her advantage when hitting your ball into an unplayable area. Although the golfer will be assessed a one stroke penalty, he or she has three options to be able to hit there next shot, even if their ball is in a bush or unplayable area. a wrong ball can happen easily in thick rough or other bad areas of the golf course so it is always important to identify your golf ball. If you cannot identify your golf ball as it lies and it is reasonably necessary to lift your golf ball to identify it, you may do so under (Rule 7.3)

Know the Rules

What’s it all about? Rule 19.2 applies whenever a player decides that his or her ball in a bush is unplayable, in each case adding one penalty stroke.
