JGS Mizuno Rehoboth Beach Series
JGS Mizuno Rehoboth Beach Series
Earlier in June, the Philadelphia Junior Tour made its annual trek
down to southern Delaware for the Rehoboth Beach Series. This year, Mizuno Golf was the title sponsor of the three event series . The winner of each division for the three-day total was rewarded with their choice of a new Mizuno wedge. Although not included in the JGS three-day total, the week kicked off with the Rehoboth Junior Open at Rehoboth Beach Country Club on Monday June 13. The 44 player field was treated to a great course situated right off the Rehoboth Bay. Jack Halleron (Timonium, MD) was the winner
The first event of the JGS three-day series took place at Cripple Creek Golf & Country Club on Tuesday, June 14. With the beautiful weather carrying over from the previous day, 41 players took to Bethany Beach’s premier country club. Continuing his stellar play, Jack Halleron (Timonium, MD) came out on top again with a round of 72 (E). Morgan Loftland (Paoli, PA) won the Boys 13-15 Division with a round of 80 (+8). Grace Stillman (Lancaster, PA) finished first in the Girls 16-18 Division, shooting a round of 89 (+17). Bret Bergey (Downingtown, PA) shot 42 (+6) to win the 12 & Under Division.

of the Boys 16-18 Division, posting a round of 70 (-2). Alex Mulrooney (Wilmington, DE) captured the Boys 13-15 Division with a score of 77 (+5). Molly Holbert (Mechanicsburg, PA) picked up the win in the Girls 16-18 Division while Christina Carrol (Bear, DE) won the Girls 13-15, shooting scores of 88 (+16) and 100 (+28), respectively. Joshua Ryan (Norristown, PA) shot 40 (+4) to win the 12 & Under Division.
JGS Mizuno Rehoboth Beach Series
JGS Mizuno Rehoboth Beach Series The Second day of the JGS Mizuno Rehoboth Beach series took place at Bear Trap Dunes. Although clouds hung around for most of the day, no weather interruptions were experienced and more great golf was played. Liam Powderly (Cockeysville, MD) fired an impressive 67 (-5) to capture the win. Nikita Romanov (Wilmington, DE) shot 70 (-2) to win the Boys 13-15 Division. Winning the Girls 16-18 and 13-15 Divisions were Casey Oppenheimer (Conshohocken, PA) with a 77 (+5) and Cristea Park (Bluebell, PA) with an 85 (+13). Hannah Lydic (Ocean View, DE) won the 12 & Under Division with a score of 43 (+7). The final day of the JGS Mizuno Rehoboth Beach series took place at Bayside Resort Golf Club. In addition to being the last event in the three-day total, this tournament also served as a Jr. PGA Championship qualifier, where 1/3 of the field would qualify for the Philadelphia Jr. PGA Championship later in July.
JGS Mizuno Rehoboth Beach Series Winners: Boys 16-18: Jack Halleron (72-75-74-221) Boys 13-15: Nikita Romanov (87-70-75-232) Girls 16-18: Casey Oppenheimer (98-77-88-263) 12 & Under: Hannah Lydic (46-43-40-129)
JGS Mizuno Rehoboth Beach Series
After three previous days of cooperative weather, the field was subjected to a rain delay. Although the rain came down heavy, the course drained well and play was able to resume. Joseph Centeno (Flourtown, PA) carded a round of 73 (+1) on a tough course to secure the win in the Boys 16-18 Division. Nikita Romanov (Wilmington, DE) won his second tournament of the series after firing a 75 (+3). Casey Oppenheimer (Conshohocken, PA) won the Girls 16-18 Division yet again with a score of 88 (+16). Cristea Park (Bluebell, PA) also picked up another win, shooting 91 (+19).

Tips for staying hydrated One of the most important things for golfers to remember is staying hydrated on the course. Dehydration can lead to symptoms affecting the overall performance of the player, as well as their health. Players often hear the expression, “keep your cool,” and to be the best of the best, players on the Philadelphia Junior Tour need to do just that. While the expression can often refer to the player’s attitude, while important, hydration is of utmost importance. In the early stages of dehydration, players will notice that their mouths are drying out or becoming sticky. The player could also become dizzy or tired, often leading to a lack of focus on the facility. Another signal that dehydration is setting in is a headache. When these symptoms start, the player is already in the dehydration stages, not on the cusp. If the player does not address the condition, dehydration can get worse and lead to more symptoms. These symptoms include extreme thirst, irritability and confusion, sunken eyes and dry skin that does not bounce back when you pinch it. When any symptoms of dehydration occur, it is as important as ever to address the situation and hydrate the body The good news is that dehydration can be prevented, which gives the player the best chance to perform at his or her optimal ability. One of the most important things to do is simply drink. Water is critical for rehydrating the body when it loses fluids, for example, sweating. When exercising, or in this case, golfing, it is recommended to drink seven to 10 ounces of fluids about every 15 minutes. This will help to keep the player hydrated and focused on their game. Sports drinks can also prove to be beneficial to players. When sweating, people lose electrolytes that help monitor water levels in the body. Sports drinks have these electrolytes and can help replenish the body, one thing
Fruits are also another way to replenish the body with water and electrolytes. Different fruits provide different types and levels of electrolytes, so varying the types of fruit eaten can be beneficial to staying hydrated. One of the hardest things for a golfer to do is stop playing during their round. However, when dehydration sets in, it can be very dangerous for the player to continue, especially if no fluids are replenished in the early stages. Dizziness is often a sign that it is time to call it a day. While the round of golf may be important, the most important thing is the health of the player. As the sun continues to pour heat over the Philadelphia Section PGA, it is extremely important for players on the Junior Tour to stay hydrated, drink plenty of fluids, and listen to their bodies. The body gives signs of dehydration, and it is dangerous to not listen. Play golf, have fun and keep your cool .
2016 PJT Travel Series
that water does not do. A balance of water and sports drinks can help to optimize the way a person balances fluid levels in their body.
A Rules of Golf Reminder: Rule 18-2
A Rules of Golf Reminder: Rule 18-2/0.5: Weight of Evidence Standard for Determining Whether Player Caused His Ball to Move
June is the host month for the U.S. Open Championship and in honor of the tournament, we’re going to take a look at the controversial rule and decision Dustin Johnson came across en route to victory at Oakmont. In his final round, Johnson’s golf ball moved as he addressed his putt on the fifth green. What’s it all about: Rule 18-2 permits a golf ball to be moved except in certain circumstances. The instances where the rule is broken include if a player, partner or caddie: lifts or moves the ball, touches it purposely (EXCEPT with a club in the act of addressing the ball, i.e. Carl Pettersson’s pre-shot routine of tapping the sole of his club on the top of a teed ball), causes the ball to move, or the equipment of the player or his partner causes the ball to move. If these actions take place, the player incurs a penalty of one stroke. Decision 18.2/0.5: The decision of Rule 18-2 weighs the evidence for determining whether a player caused his/her ball to move. Under this decision, it is of importance that when a player’s ball at rest moves, the
The exact verbiage within this decision where the USGA concluded on the Dustin Johnson ruling is most likely found in this paragraph: “If the weight of evidence indicates that it is more likely than not that the player caused the ball to move, even though that conclusion is not free from doubt, the player incurs a one-stroke penalty under Rule 18-2 and the ball must be replaced. However, slightly contradictory to the above ruling is a new addition to the decision, which has caused debate. The following is an example of a situation where the weight of evidence would indicate that the player did not cause the movement: “A player’s ball lies on an upslope in a closely-mown area. He makes a practice swing, but does so some distance from the ball as he is concerned that the ball may move. He carefully takes his stance but does not ground his club. Prior to making the backswing for the stroke, the ball moves. As the ball did not move while the player made the practice swing or took his stance, it is more likely than not that other factors (i.e. the ball’s lie on an upslope) caused the ball to move.”
A Rules of Golf Reminder: Rule 28-2 (cont.)
cause needs to be assessed. Considerations of the relationship between the player and golf ball include: the nature of any actions taken near the ball (e.g. movement of loose impediments, practice swings, grounding club, taking stance, etc.), time elapsed between such actions and movement of the ball, the lie of the ball before it moved (i.e. closely-mown area or longer grass), the conditions of the ground near the ball (e.g. degree of slope or surface irregularities), and wind, rain, other weather conditions.
A Rules of Golf Reminder: Rule 18-2
In the end, the USGA went through with assessing Dustin Johnson a one-stroke penalty in accordance with Rule 18-2. The USGA’s official statement regarding the ruling reads, “…based on the weight of the evidence, it was more likely than not that Dustin caused his ball to move. Dustin’s putter contacted the ground at the side of the ball, and almost immediately after, the ball moved.” Based on that statement, three main factors were evaluated that influenced the decision – certainty, grounding of the club/spacing, and time. Certainty: The USGA claimed that Johnson more likely than not caused his ball to move. More likely than not means the USGA committee believed there was a greater than 50% chance Dustin’s actions impacted the ball’s movement. Grounding of the club/spacing: Based on the video evidence, the USGA concluded that the putter grounded at the side of the ball and (more likely than not) caused the ball to move. Also to note, the new legal situation of the decision mentions that if a ball is known to lie on a slope of a closely-mown area, the player should make an effort to distance himself from the ball during the practice stroke if there is a concern that the ball may move. The USGA did not see enough distance separated between Johnson and the ball when it moved. Time: One of the components of determining whether or not a player caused his/her ball to move is the amount of elapsed time. This is related to the spacing of the player and the ball. If a player makes an action near a ball and the ball moves immediately or within a very short amount of time, then the player is deemed most likely responsible for affecting the ball’s movement.
After weighing these many factors, the USGA came up with a decision on this ruling, assessing Dustin Johnson a one-stroke penalty. There are many components that can still be argued regarding the entire situation – whether or not to use video evidence or use golf’s honor system, the timing of making the ruling and its effects, etc. But in the end, the USGA felt that the resulting decision best reflected what is stated in the Rules of Golf. A Rules of Golf Reminder: Rule 28-2 (cont.)
The USGA determined that almost immediately after Johnson’s putter grounded, the ball moved and therefore further influenced the ruling.
