on every shot I was pretty nervous. “My mom said I didn’t show it, which was good. The girls I played with (Alice Kim and Elizabeth Schultz) I didn’t really know who they were, so that kind of helped. I didn’t feel intimidated.” Herr was solid off the tee, hitting all 14 of the ultra-wide fairways and avoiding the adjacent fescue. But the length of the golf course (6,521 yards on Thursday) worked to her disadvantage. “There are a few holes that I can’t reach [in regulation),” she said. “I did have some up and downs.” Herr also had to contend with the tricky greens at Sebonack, which were officially rolling at 11 on the Stimpmeter. She wound up taking 32 putts. “They said they were going to slow them down,” she said, “but it seems like they sped them up. They were pretty fast today.” In the end, Herr’s Open debut was a satisfying one. “I am definitely happy with the way I played,” she said. “I’ll try to go out there and do the same thing tomorrow.” Chip shots—Herr’s second-round start timer is set for 12:41 off the 10th tee. Herr played three official practice rounds prior to Thursday. On Monday her playing companions included former world number-one Stacy Lewis and twotime Open champion and World Golf Hall of Famer Karrie Webb. “It was really fun,” Herr said. “I learned a lot from them. They gave me some good advice. It was a blast” On Tuesday, Herr had the chance to play with defending champion Na Yeon Choi.
