Know the Rules What’s it all about? Rule 20.1c comes in handy in stroke play when you come across a situation where you aren’t sure what you’re supposed to do and there is no rules official immediately available to help. How does it work? After you assess the situation and you aren’t sure what to do, but before taking any further action, tell your fellow competitor you wish to play two balls under Rule 20.1c. Tell him or her which ball you prefer to count if the Rules permit. Then, play both golf balls until they are holed. Afterwards, you must report the facts of the situation to the Committee before returning your scorecard and the Committee will make a ruling on your situation. Failure to do this results in disqualification. You MUST report the facts of the situation even if you get the same score with both balls. Rule 20.1c In Action: Elise’s ball lands near a fence. She isn’t sure whether or not the fence is considered an immovable obstruction, since it may or may not define out of bounds. Elise tells her fellow competitor that she wishes to play two balls under Rule Does this fence 20.1c. The original ball will be define out of bounds? Or is it an immovable obstruction? played as it lies. The second ball Since I don’t know, I will use will be dropped in the correct Rule 20.1c. place to take relief from an immovable obstruction (Rule 16.1). Elise finds her nearest point of relief from the fence and drops the ball within one-club length of that point, but take the nearest point of relief from the fence, no closer to the hole. She tells her fellow competitor she wishes to use the second ball for her score if the Rules permit. She then completes the hole with both golf balls. After she completes play and before turning in her scorecard, Elise reports the facts of the situation to the Committee. where she finds that the fence did not indicate out of bounds and the ball she chose (the second ball) will count for her score. Had the fence indicated out of bounds, Elise’s original ball would have counted for her score. Why is Rule 20.1c Important? Rule 20.1c allows competitor’s in stroke play to continue a round, with minimal impact on pace of play, when doubtful situations arise and no rules official is immediately available. By using Rule 20.1c and playing two golf balls, players may also protect themselves from disqualification in a tournament.
