Know the Rules Water Hazards: What’s it all about? As the name states, Rule 26-1 deals with taking relief when your ball finds a water hazards. How does it work? The rule begins by stating that it is a question of fact whether a ball struck towards a water hazard is in the hazard. The Rule says it must be known or virtually certain that the ball is in the hazard (this means you are 99.9% sure the water hazard is the only place the ball could be), otherwise you must proceed under Rule 27-1 which deals with lost balls. If you locate your ball within the water hazard, you can choose to play the ball as it lies. However, you are not allowed to touch the ground or water with your hand or a club before making your stroke. See Rule 134 for more details about prohibited actions in hazards. If you want to take relief from the water hazard, you can take a one stroke penalty and select from the following relief options: 1. Play the ball from as near as possible to the spot from which the last shot was played (stroke and distance). 2. Drop a ball behind the water hazard keeping the point at which the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard directly between the hole and where the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind the water hazard the ball may be dropped. 3. As an additional option for lateral water hazards, you may take relief within two club lengths from where the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard, no closer to the hole. Or, you can go to a point equidistant from the hole on the opposite side of the water hazard and drop a ball within two club lengths of that point, no closer to the hole. Rule 26-1 In Action: Example 1: Bobby is putting down a severe slope towards a water hazard. He hits his putt a little firm and his ball ends up in the water hazard. Knowing all of his options, Bobby decides to take relief with the only option that will not force him to play his next shot from the other side of the water hazards: replay the shot as close as possi-ble to the spot from which has last shot was played. Example 2: Brian hit a shot that landed in a creek just in front of the green. There is a very large downslope leading into the pond. He knows one of his options is to drop a ball behind the water hazard keeping the point at which Knowing all of your options under Rule 26-1 can help the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard directly be- limit the damage of hitting your ball into a water hazard. tween the hole and where the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind the water hazard the ball may be dropped. Electing to use that relief option, Brian decides to go back about 10 yards from the margin of the water hazard to a flat spot and play his next shot from that point. Why is Rule 26-1 Important? Rule 26-1 states all of your options for taking relief from a water hazard. If Bobby or Brian had not known all of their options in the examples above, they may have decided on an option that would have led to more difficult shots and most likely higher scores. Although no one likes hitting their ball in a water hazard, knowing Rule 26-1 can help limit the damage to your score. To read Rule 26-1 in the office Rules of Golf click here.
