Current and former Philly PGA Jr Tour players move on to compete in Sectional Qualifying

Recently, Chesapeake Bay’s own Austin and Zachary Barbin qualified for the U.S Open Sectionals at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland on June 3, 2019. With only 500 spots open to any professional and amateur golfers, over 8,600 golfers competed in qualifying tournaments across the country to advance to Sectional Qualifying. A three person playoff for one spot was needed at the U.S Open Local Qualifier at Hillendale Country Club in Phoenix, Maryland, where the 18 year old Austin came out victorious. Meanwhile, his brother, Zachary, shot an even par at his qualifier at Makefield Highlands Golf Club in Yardley, Pennsylvania to advance to the U.S Open Sectionals as well. The Philadelphia Junior Tour will be wishing the Barbin brothers the best of luck as they hope to make it to Pebble Beach, CA to compete in the 119th U.S Open Tournament. Know the Rules 6.3c: Wrong Ball How does it work? A Wrong Ball is any ball other than your ball in play, provisional ball, or a second ball in stroke play played under 20.1c or 14.7b. Examples of a wrong ball may be another player’s ball in play, a stray ball, and your own ball that is out of bounds or lost. Rule 20.1c In Action: Ben tees off the 18th hole and his ball comes to rest in the thick rough left of the fairway. Ben finds a ball that he thinks is his in the rough and plays the ball up to the putting green. When he marks his ball and picks it up, he realizes this is not his ball and it was just a stray golf ball. At this point Ben must correct his mistake. This means he must go back to search for his ball in the rough for a maximum of three minutes (Rule 18.2). In this case Ben does find his ball and plays it onto the putting green and two putts. Since Ben corrected his mistake before returning his scorecard, he will receive the general penalty on this hole for playing a Wrong Ball. The score Ben receives for the 18th hole is a 6 including 4 strokes made and 2 penalty strokes from the general penalty. Why is Rule 6.3c Important? Rule 6.3c is important because if you make a stroke at a wrong ball and do not correct your mistake by continuing play with the original ball before making a stroke to begin another hole, or for the final hole of the round, before returning his or her scorecard you are disqualified. Playing a wrong ball can happen easily in thick rough or other bad areas of the golf course so it is always important to identify your golf ball. If you cannot identify your golf ball as it lies and it is reasonably necessary to lift your golf ball to identify it, you may do so under (Rule 7.3)

KNOW THE RULES—RULE 20.1c

Know the Rules

What’s it all about? All players must not make a stroke at a Wrong Ball under rule 6.3c.
