Know the Rules
Rule 14-1b: Anchoring The Club
What is Rule 14-1b all about? Rule 14-1b is the much discussed Rule regarding belly putters and long putters. Rule that states, “In making a stroke a player must not anchor the club either ‘directly’ or by use of an ‘anchor point.’” The Rule then has 2 notes to define directly anchoring and creating an anchor point. Direct anchoring is “when the player intentionally holds the club or a gripping hand in contact with any part of his body, except that the player may hold the club or a gripping hand against a hand or forearm.” Note 2 states, “An ‘anchor point’ exists when the player intentionally holds a forearm in contact with any part of his body to establish a gripping as a stable point around which the other hand may swing the club.”
How does it work? To better understand how Rule 14-1b works let’s take a look at a few examples of strokes that are permitted: The picture below shows 2 strokes that would be permissible under Rule 14-1b:
The next pictures give an example of a player legally holding the club against the hand or
However, if a player grips the club above the
forearm mentioned in Note 1:
elbow they will have created an anchor point and be in breach of rule 14-1b:
The next image shows the player holding his forearm against his side but because his hands are together not “creating a stable point around which the other hand may swing” he has not created an anchor point:
Now let’s look at a few examples of strokes prohibited by Rule 14-1b: These are the two most common strokes that are prohibited by Rule 14-1b:
These strokes are two examples of creating an “anchor point”:
This image shows the player creating an anchor point because he is placing his forearm in contact with his leg to establish a gripping hand as a stable point around which the other hand may swing the club:
Why is Rule 14-1b Important: Whatever your opinion on this Rule it is now a Rule of Golf and all competitions will now be played with this Rule in place. The Committee in charge of a comeptiton may not establish any Local Rule or Condition of Competition that waives a Rule of Golf so it is important that you know what is and isn’t allowed. #lifeonthephillyjuniortour And so you’ve competed on the PJT since you were of age, in the 9 hole Division. From then, year after year, you’ve moved up the ranks, your starting time getting earlier and earlier, summer after summer. And then you turn 17 and get invited to your first Harry Hammond, a collegiate event. Sooner than you know it, you’re looking upwards at your last junior golf season. All of a sudden, you’re at your last Junior Tour Championship. If you’re lucky, you have a last high school season. And then before you know it, kaput, your career as a junior golfer is over, no going back. While in the moment, you feel as if you have so much time left; another weekend to look forward to, another season. But mo-

And yet all those years you had on the Tour, the seasons, the tournaments, all the friends you made, they’ll remain an integral part of your childhood So don’t forget that 1st ever tournament you played in on the PJT. Back when maybe you were intimidated by everyone on the driving range. And your heart beat a sudden fast staccato at the sound of your name being announced by the starter. With butterflies in your stomach and sweaty hands, you put that ball on the tee, and hit your first tournament tee shot. That’s a memory worth remembering.
