hen it comes to his beloved Everglades, photographer Mac Stone doesn’t like the word “fragile.” The Florida wetlands may be imperiled by pollution and development, but they are also, he argues, resilient. Stone, 34, spent five years venturing into some of the swampland’s most inhospitable depths to capture images of everything from majestic cypress forests and flights of rare birds to sharks navigating the roots of mangroves. His book Everglades: America’s Wetland, containing 240 luminous photographs and also essays by leading conservationists, documents what he calls “a different kind of wild.” His Ted Talk on the subject has drawn more than a million viewers. A vast network of forests, prairies, and wetlands that extends from the Kissimmee chain of lakes to Florida Bay and covers a third of the state, the Everglades defies easy definitions. It has been viewed with antagonism, by everyone from white settlers hundreds of years ago to today’s developers, as a swamp to be hacked and paved over. Considered haunted and dangerous, its black waters have exerted an outsized influence on the American imagination. A World Heritage Site, it is home to thousands of species of wildlife, many of them endangered.

ELITE: Your photographs are a love letter to your home state. What was your experience growing up there? Mac Stone: At 14 or 15, I was looking for some kind of independence, to stake my claim on that independence. The way I got it was to go outside, look for fossilized shark teeth in the riverbeds, creek beds, and wander the sloughs and backwoods of my hometown, dodging alligators and snakes. I grew up in Gainesville, and to me that was normal. I grew up where people long before me made the decision to protect local pockets of wilderness. Not only for reasons of hydrology or ecology but also for the fundamental right we have to get to know the places we come from.

my friends. I realized that the better the photos, the more impactful the story would be. I immersed myself in how to render light and artistically express the scenes I was shooting. But I didn’t think becoming a professional photographer was feasible. After I graduated college, I took my first job teaching photography to children in Honduras. They taught me how the camera can transform into a megaphone that helps to advocate for the protection of the places we hold dear.

ELITE: What inspired you to photograph the Everglades? Mac Stone: Once back in the States, I moved to the Florida Keys to work as a wildlife biologist in the Everglades for three years. That’s where I cut my teeth to begin this body of work. My very f irst introduction to the Everglades came when I was 15. My dad and I took a kayaking trip and paddled the Everglades for five days. It was a totally different landscape from where I grew up in North Central Florida. Instead of live oaks with Spanish moss, there were mangroves and orchids. It was transformative for me. I had never seen so much wildlife in one place.

ELITE: You point out that the Everglades preserve is less appreciated than other national parks. Why the misconceptions? Mac Stone: The word “Everglades” is associated with the word “swamp,” which is unfairly associated with bugs, mud, and icky feelings. We’ve taken an adversarial attitude to the wetlands and swamps ever since our ancestors tried to drain them to make them habitable. Things live in these wetlands that can humble you: snakes, alligators, crocodiles, and mosquitos. But, they are some of the most serene and beautiful natural areas in the world.

ELITE: Why is the Everglades ecologically important and what threats does it face? Mac Stone: When you say Everglades, people typically conjure a swamp, but it’s a watershed that includes reefs, estuaries, ponds, and beaches, and all of that depends on this river of grass f lowing from Lake Okeechobee south. When we turn on the tap, that is the Everglades working for us. The management scheme through the mid-20th century sought to drain the Everglades. The problems we are seeing today are predicated on a system not built on scientific hydrodynamics but on the notion of converting swamps to developable and agriculturally viable land.

The roseate spoonbill and other shorebirds forage on the mud flats during low tide on Lake Ingram in Everglades National Park. The spoonbill is the “pink canary in the coal mines,” an indicator species of the health of the Everglades.
Now we see the red tide—algae blooms—threatening both coasts. Lake Okeechobee, which was dammed up to make agriculturally viable land, is heating up in the summer. We dump it out east and west instead of allowing it to flow south as it originally did and filter through swamps before it reached Florida Bay, the terminus of the Everglades system. Today, only a third of the water that once reached the bay ends up there. ELITE: You spent five years documenting these wetlands. What was your most challenging shot? Mac Stone: The photograph of the Everglades snail k ite, the most specia lized raptor in the world. There used to be thousands of nesting pairs, and now there are 400. It feeds only on apple snails the size of Ping-Pong balls. We went to a hotspot in Lake Okeechobee to photograph these birds plucking them off the surface of the water. I spent a week slogging through wetlands,
standing in waist-deep water with a camera trap, watching birds f ly. Nothing happened. I noticed little behavioral tricks. Nothing happened. I was so strung out that I lef t for a while, talked to biologists, went back down ready to dedicate another ten days, and eventually noticed them f lying in a different f light line. I took the trap with the apple snails in it and moved it, and on the third day the kites started snatching snails right in front of my camera. I was so elated. The sun was setting and it was the best possible light you can have. I was firing the camera, thinking I’m a genius. And I walked over to my camera and saw that not a single photo was taken. The wireless trigger had malfunctioned. But at that point, I knew where the kites were feeding, and over the next four days, I went back every day and made the photo that became the cover of the book. Sublime and compassionate Buddhas perform grand mudras—the language of the divine. Around them, exquisite heavenly maidens float across the stage in flowing, ethereal dresses. A collective “Wow!” stirs in the audience as they are transported into the heavens. Tears brim in people’s eyes as they feel a distant yet familiar yearning deep in their hearts.

Although Shen Yun Performing Arts changes its program every year, it always opens its performance with a variation of this scene. For principal dancer Kenji Kobayashi, this opening number still gives him goose bumps year after year. On his annual tours with Shen Yun, Kenji revels in the euphoria he feels as he shares the magnificent art of classical Chinese dance with audiences around the world. When he steps on stage, he becomes totally immersed in his character, forgetting all else. Kenji speaks much like how he dances—he pours in all his heart and spirit. With his infectious smile, he is like a wellspring of positive energy that flows forth to uplift everyone around him.

REACHING HIS DREAM Kenji grew up in Japan with a Japanese father and Chinese mother. When he first saw the New Yorkbased Shen Yun perform in Tokyo in 2006, he became an instant fan. Engrossed by the dignity of the male dancers, the grace of the female dancers, and the vibrant backdrop, Kenji walked away feeling deeply inspired. There was something transcendent and soul-stirring about Shen Yun, something that surpassed other forms of entertainment. From then on, Kenji went to see Shen Yun every year. He set his sights on gaining acceptance to Fei Tian Academy of the Arts, a leading school of classical Chinese dance in New York that trains many of Shen Yun’s artists. He auditioned three times before he was accepted. Kenji was determined to succeed at Fei Tian, and he told himself, “I can endure any hardship. I will endure.” He laughs as he says that Fei Tian turned out to be even harder than he had imagined, but as his love for dance grew ever stronger, he found the strength to persevere. At Fei Tian, Kenji had his first taste of performing during an internal competition. It was a qualifying round to determine which students would be selected to compete in New Tang Dynasty (NTD) Television’s International Classical Chinese Dance Competition. As he danced on stage, Kenji says, “I just felt extremely happy, extremely happy. When you enter into the character, you truly … how should I say it, you enter into your own world.” Kenji was only a fledgling dancer at the time, but he had his first taste of bliss.
出舞劇《荊軻刺秦王》。「 我一上去,一進入了,就特別 陶醉在那當中,從那時候開始我真的覺得『 跳舞,真的好 快樂!』」他彷彿墜入了回憶中。 那次比賽是小林首次準備的個人演出,雖未成功晉 級,但在舞臺上全心投入角色的他,真切地感受到表演 的喜悅,沉浸於享受舞臺的美好,無關乎成績,此次登 臺經驗反而更加堅定了他學舞的意志。 移孝為忠 寓志於舞 2016年,小林參加《新唐人電視台》第七屆「 全世界中國 古典舞大賽 」,他在大賽中表演了自編自導的舞劇《移孝 為忠》,以楊家將為創作藍本,旨在講述父親教導兒子要 習武報效祖國,後來父親出征為國捐軀,兒子雖萬分悲 慟但隨即想起父親教誨,決定承襲父志為國征戰沙場。 劇中,小林將兒子接手父親遺物那一段刻畫地真摯 傳神。他接過父親的戰袍來到舞臺中央,向後空翻一圈 緊接著大跳雙飛燕( 原地騰空大跳 ),一氣呵成,透過激 昂的舞步,將那份悲傷淋漓盡致地呈現。劇末,他目光 堅定地披上父親的戰袍,拾起長槍望向遠方,準備出征。 談起刻畫人物,小林分享呈現此劇的重點在於:必 須理解主角從「 悲傷到立志 」的心理變化。他很清楚不能 只有表面的情緒模仿,必須讓自己真正成為主角。他從 舞蹈中的每一氣口、每一舞步、每一環節都增添了細微 的層次,使主角在兩種心境的過渡中能行雲流水般地呈 現,他曾說:「 你的心就得是他,得跟他的心溝通起來那 種感覺。」這溝通過程,小林就彷彿在和過往的自己對 話,因為現實中他也曾經歷喪父之痛。 2013年,小林的爸爸突然離世,在美國的他甚至來 不及見父親最後一面。「 爸爸就是一個無敵的,吹不倒、 推不倒,什麼來了都能替我們扛得住。」他談起父親時, 言語間滿溢著敬慕,「 他真的是很無私的一個人!」他還 說父親吃飯時總是把好的留給他人,最後才動筷,從日 常的瑣事便能看見那份總是以他人為優先的堅持。 小林回憶道: 「 什麼東西都是他教我們,突然有一天
A SON’S DUTY At Fei Tian, part of Kenji’s training involved the study of Chinese history, a vibrant tapestry of stories, values, and traditions spanning five millennia of Chinese civilization. Kenji delighted in the stories of ancient China, with their colorful tales of loyalty, righteousness, and battles between good and evil— so riveting that they panned out like dramatic plays for him. “The more I read, the more interesting I found them,” he says.

Through the medium of classical Chinese dance, Kenji and his fellow dancers brought these stories to life and showcased traditional virtues like self lessness, benevolence, and integrity. The paragons of Chinese history also became windows of ref lection for Kenji. “Their stories and the way they conducted themselves can inspire us,” he says, and prompt the question: “What kind of person do you ultimately want to be?” In 2016, Kenji choreographed a dance on his own for NTD’s 7th International Classical Chinese Dance Competition. The story centered around a young

warrior who strives to follow two traditional Chinese virtues: filial piety and loyalty. The story begins with the young man’s father teaching him about martial arts and the importance of serving his country in its time of need. Later, his father dies on the battlefield, thrusting the young man into immense grief. But remembering his father’s words, he ultimately chooses to continue his father’s legacy by serving their country. The story is dear to Kenji’s heart, as he too lost his father when he was only 17. When Kenji speaks of his father, his words brim with admiration. His father

was a man who was reliable, who bore responsibility, and who selflessly gave to others. At meals, he’d eat other people’s leftovers, and at restaurants, he’d always let others pick the menu. “He never thought about himself. He always thought about others first,” Kenji says. For Kenji, his father was an infallible figure. “No matter what happened, he would be in front of us, protecting us,” he says. Kenji was at school when he received the phone call from his mom that jolted his world out of balance. At this kind of moment, Kenji says, it comes down to a choice. For him, this was a period of sudden maturation, as he learned to face the world alone: “I couldn’t be a naive youth anymore. I had to start assuming a lot more responsibilities.” And for the young man in the story, he chose to carry on his father’s legacy and life aspirations. To bring the character to life, Kenji endlessly polished his interpretation of the character, adding layers of nuance and feeling to every breath, every gesture, and every movement to show the young man’s gradual transition from despair to determination. And thus, just as a melody becomes a symphony, Kenji built a multidimensional character whose palpable emotions swept audiences away. “Entering into a character on stage is just pure pleasure. When you reach a certain level, when you have matured emotionally and rehearsed technically to a certain point, you don’t feel nervous; it’s just pleasure,” Kenji says. At the end of the scene, Kenji’s eyes are resolute as he throws his father’s cape onto his shoulders, wipes away his tears, and picks up a long spear in preparation for battle. Kenji’s moving performance, a shining tribute to his own father, was awarded gold.
derous applause after a Shen Yun performance and sees people laughing or tearing up in filmed audience reviews, he is reminded of Shen Yun’s impact on people. “It’s a mutual relationship. We give to them, and they also give to us,” Kenji says. “‘All your pain and exhaustion, ah, it was so worth it!’ It’s truly that kind of feeling.” Kenji can no longer imagine life without classical Chinese dance. This magical art has nourished his soul for over a decade and become a lifelong journey of exploration. “No matter how much you study and how far you dig, you won’t be able to unearth all of it,” he says. “This is simply too deep and too broad. The more you study it, the more you feel still remains. You will never reach the pinnacle or reach perfection. Even if you might not physically be able to dance anymore later on, your understanding of dance will still become deeper and deeper.” “It’s hard for me to express,” Kenji says, “but this is my life, what I want in my life. I don’t think I could possibly leave it!”

A BOUNDLESS ART Over the years, Kenji’s expressive performances have captivated many. A loyal fan, a Japanese landowner, went to see Shen Yun perform three times in Japan (all in the same year) and was still eager for more. So he flew with his wife to Taoyuan, Taiwan, just to see Shen Yun perform one more time. At curtain call, the landowner was spotted standing up, eagerly applauding and cheering Kenji’s name. This audience member is just one among many who have been touched, inspired, and uplifted by Shen Yun’s performances. As Kenji hears the thun-

estled among the historic, cast-iron buildings of Soho in Lower Manhattan is MarieBelle New York. Upon stepping into this charming boutique cafe, one is instantly transported to a dreamy and elegant scene straight out of a fairy tale. Exquisite crystal chandeliers, Tiffany-blue walls, and chic marble coffee tables are offset by playful embellishments and colorful displays. Since the store’s opening in 2001, founder Maribel Lieberman has been sharing her passion for chocolate with the world and, consequently, reinventing the way we enjoy the sweet delicacy.

FINDING HER PATH Maribel was born in Honduras, as the youngest of eight children. Her passion for confections began at an early age. As an 8-year-old, she would often make sugared candies and sell them to other children in her neighborhood. However, despite her early dabblings in the trade, chocolatiering hadn’t always been her path. In high school, at her mother’s prompting, Maribel enrolled in English and secretarial courses. However, it didn’t take long for her to see that this wasn’t the right path. Having always been an artistic soul, she soon realized that her true passions lay in the creative industry. This realization led her across 2,000 miles—from a small town in Honduras to the Big Apple. Growing up with a mother and grandma who were both seamstresses gave Maribel a love for fashion and design. Upon graduating from Parsons, she found work in the fashion industry, sketching and working freelance jobs. However, Maribel still felt as though something was missing. “I felt very empty,” she recalled. “I like fashion, but the industry is very competitive … Everybody wants to make it to the top, no matter what.”

From Chinatown, to Little Italy, to the city’s many Indian restaurants, she was constantly discovering new spices and different ingredients.

For Maribel, cooking is a way of making art. “In my opinion, a chef is painting with her ingredients. Just as one color may not go well with another, some ingredients don’t go together,” she explained. Her curiosity, creativity, and inborn knack for taste led her to successfully launch a five-year catering business: Maribel’s Gourmet Cuisine. However, she didn’t stop there. Catering merely paved the way for her first store, and ultimately led to her discovery of chocolate as her lifelong passion. In 2000, Maribel opened her first store: Lunettes et Chocolat. It carried a unique combination of chocolate and eyeglasses. At the time, one of Maribel’s friends had been trying to open an eyeglass shop. With Manhattan’s steep rent prices, they thought, “why not combine our visions?” Originally, Maribel had planned for a gourmet store, but with limited funds, she decided to focus on just chocolate. A year later, in December 2001, she debuted her first solo store: MarieBelle New York. In a rush to open in time for Christmas, she rented a small gallery in Soho, thinking it would be temporary. Little did she know then, however, that it would continue to serve as MarieBelle’s location for the next 18 years.
MarieBelle has prepared special chocolate gift boxes for Chinese New Year. Every chocolate has a design on it that’s inspired by Chinese culture.

STANDING HER GROUND Through its rapid growth and expansion, Maribel’s career is characterized by her steady will and willingness to go against the norm. She recalls that in the beginning, she was criticized for choosing to use dark chocolate. “People told me I wouldn’t do well, because Americans are used to milk chocolate,” she explained. Nevertheless, Maribel trusted her taste and instinct. It proved to be the right decision. A month later, a Vogue article came out, proclaiming the benefits of dark chocolate and sharply increasing its popularity. This same intuition has bolstered MarieBelle into the international brand it is today. In 2012, MarieBelle opened its first overseas store in Kyoto. Again, this decision was doubted by those around her. “They told me, you’re not going to make it. You have to

ave you become the adult you dreamed you’d become?” It’s the question posed by the new award-winning animated film On Happiness Road, directed by Taiwanese filmmaker Hsin-Yin Sung. If you have not become the adult you once dreamed of, what then? The film tells the moving coming-of-age tale of a Taiwanese girl, whose life is intertwined with major historical events in Taiwan. Despite being Hsin-Yin’s first animated feature, it has garnered international acclaim and won multiple awards in Taiwan and abroad, including the grand prize at the 2018 Tokyo Anime Award Festival and the AniMovie Award at the 25th Stuttgart Festival of Animated Film in Germany. 重拾文藝夢 宋欣穎是家中長女,她坦承自己從小背負著母親的深重期 盼。母親是鄉下的孩子,因家境貧困無法繼續升學,母親 的這份遺憾自然落在了她的肩上。此外台灣的社會環境有 個普遍認知:當醫生才能翻轉社會階級。 除了背負母親的期盼,宋欣穎也為幫助家中擺脫貧 困,一心想從醫。然而16歲這年她生了一場病,頻繁地進 出醫院,從此她改變了想法。 「 我每天看到醫院的生老病死,我會非常的難過,我 覺得那些跟我不相干的人的生老病死都跟著我回家。」宋 欣穎體察到自己面對人生百態的敏感,才驚覺自己不適合 當醫生。她釐清自己真實的想法後,決定改變人生目標。 「 我有一面是本來就是非常地喜歡藝文、喜歡異想天 開的 」。拋卻了成為醫生的志向後,有如一道開關,喚起 了她深藏許久的細膩與感性,她不再與數理周旋,轉身投 入廣闊的文藝世界。 成為說故事的人 宋欣穎從臺灣大學畢業後,進了知名報社當記者,她解釋: 「 我覺得人生最美好的就是靠寫作維生,既寫作又可以賺 錢。」而愛好電影的她便主動爭取擔任影視記者。 宋欣穎談起出差坎城影展的種種,她在影展期間每天 都起大早到影院排隊,認真看完每一場電影,盡心完成報 導。 「 透過了那個過程認識了很多的導演、創作者跟演員, At the 20th Taipei Film Awards, On Happiness Road won the Grand Prize, as well as the Best Animation and Audience Choice Award. Through a coming-of-age story of a Taiwanese girl, the film takes people through Taiwan’s contemporary history and reflects on the moments that are significant to us as we grow up. It grapples with many ideas, including family and parental expectations.
because she grew up in an impoverished family, and Hsin-Yin’s grandmother did not think girls needed schooling. So Hsin-Yin’s mother desperately wished her daughter could fulfill her own unrealized dreams. Besides parental pressure, Hsin-Yin was also mistreated by her teachers because her family was poor. So she became fixated on one thought: “I have to make money. I have to break away from this humiliation.” She poured her energy into academics with the hope of becoming a doctor, a stable career with a high salary. But when she was 16, she became sick and had to go in and out of the hospital for treatment. Although her illness wasn’t severe, she realized she could not bear to witness the human suffering around her, like the ailing children hooked up to machines or the elderly man who was around one day and in the mortuary by the next. “It was really hard for me to bear. I felt like the illnesses and deaths of people unrelated to me would follow me home,” she recalls.

The film thoughtfully speaks to the collective memory of Taiwanese people.
early in the morning to be one of the first to line up in front of the theater. Her conversations with directors and actors would eventually inspire her to become a filmmaker herself, someone who told stories and touched people through film. So she saved up money, quit her well-paying job, and set off to Japan to complete a master’s degree in film theory. It was during Hsin-Yin’s time studying in Tokyo that she truly experienced what it meant to appreciate life and subtle beauty. In Japan, simple objects could be extraordinarily thoughtful and beautiful. Everything, from arranging f lowers in a pot to drinking a cup of tea, could be a magical art of exquisite details. Hsin-Yin left Japan having learned a fundamental lesson: The most beautiful and most powerful things could also be the most simple. This philosophy would also be reflected in the way she makes films.

“I tell stories by using many, many details to build emotions,” she says. These details and subtle interactions come together to create explosive emotions. EMBRACING HERSELF The idea for On Happiness Road came to HsinYin when she went to the United States to continue studying filmmaking. One of her professors asked students to answer the questions “Who am I?” and “Where am I from?” So Hsin-Yin began to reflect on her childhood in Taiwan, which was colored by the turbulent contemporary history of this island nation. Although On Happiness Road didn’t perform as well as expected in Taiwan box offices, she was heartened by the support she received elsewhere. While Hsin-Yin was visiting Japan, the veteran filmmaker Mitsuru Hongo told her, “I’ve been making animated films for nearly 40 years. I can use my career to promise you that many films will quickly disappear from this world, but this film of yours will remain.” After seeing the film, he had phoned many of his friends and acquaintances in the filmmaking world to recommend it. The Japanese filmmaker added that back when Grave of the Fireflies and My Neighbor Totoro were first released, neither performed particularly well. But both are now celebrated masterpieces of Japanese animated film. “I promise you, On Happiness Road is such a work,” he said. Although he was normally a shy and reserved man, Mitsuru Hongo had traveled two hours by rail just to encourage HsinYin in person. On Happiness Road may not have been an immediate box office hit, but it has raked in multiple awards and garnered loyal fans, including a lively online club of Japanese fans who avidly promote her film. “I think I was very sincere in making this film, so I have met so many genuine fans,” she says. Hsin-Yin says that in the past, she had “very little confidence in myself.” It was during her time studying in the United States that she learned to embrace herself and her background, as her stories won the
recognition of her professors and her fellow students. One professor said to her, “Hsin-Yin, all the stories you write are very cultural. And the cultural background is something only you can write, but it’s very universal.” When she first started working on On Happiness Road, there were many naysayers in Taiwan who critiqued her ideas: “This story is so Taiwanese. How could foreigners understand it?” they said. But the international critical acclaim of On Happiness Road has proved that a story rooted in Taiwanese history and culture can nonetheless have universal appeal. It’s like how Forrest Gump became a celebrated classic all over the world, even in places where people knew nothing about hippie culture, the Watergate Scandal, or ping-pong diplomacy. By believing in herself and in the story she wanted to tell, Hsin-Yin was able to craft a remarkably thoughtful and moving film. Hsin-Yin titled her film On Happiness Road because she believes that happiness is found on the journey, not at the destination. Returning to the film’s central question, has Hsin-Yin become the kind of adult she anticipated she would become? She nods. She is walking on her own road of happiness, and she hopes her film will help others do the same.

endering humans is the most difficult. Next are landscapes, and after that are dogs and horses. Terraces and halls and other structures with set forms are easy by comparison,” wrote the Chinese painter Gu Kaizhi (344–406). In depicting humans, he emphasized using external forms to convey a person’s spirit, an idea that developed into a major guiding philosophy for figural representations in Chinese art. Instead of prioritizing the accurate portrayal of external forms and physical anatomy, artists thus focused on evoking a subject’s inner spirit, the individual’s distinctive “life energy.” A variety of such Chinese figural representations is now on display at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The exhibit includes three galleries. The first centers on children, a reflection of the long-standing importance of offspring in Chinese culture and continuing the ancestral line. The second showcases scenes of everyday life in ancient China as well as notable figures of history and legend. And the last gallery focuses on figures from Buddhism and Taoism, shedding light on the piety of the ancient Chinese. The exhibit displays more than 120 objects from the Song (960–1279) to the Qing (1644–1911) Dynasty, including textiles, lacquerware, jade, ceramics, and metalwork, as well as wooden and bamboo objects. The objects are split into two rotations to prevent damage from over-exposure to light: The first is on view until May 26, 2019, and the second will be available from June 1, 2019, to February 23, 2020.

CHILDREN AT PLAY In ancient China, all families—whether they were families of nobles, scholar-officials, or commoners— hoped to have many children, a sign of good fortune. A thriving family with many children and grandchildren was commonly considered the requisite for happiness. The art often depicted children at play, frolicking about in seemingly infinite postures and positions. One of the works on display is a silk tapestry that depicts the innocent, carefree life of children engaging in activities like archery, boating, falconry, fishing, horseback riding, kite-flying, playing musical instruments, or reading. In total, there are 83 boys in the painting. Colorful and intricately crafted, this Qing Dynasty tapestry was likely hung on the wall of a noble family’s home.

High in the sky are a pair of phoenixes, symbolizing great fortune and bright prospects. And among the auspicious clouds is a young boy riding on a qilin, a creature of Chinese lore that was said to have a horn, a yellow belly, a multicolored back, the hooves of a horse, the body of a deer, and the tail of an ox. The qilin was commonly associated with the imminent birth or passing of a sage or illustrious ruler, one who epitomized benevolence and righteousness. In traditional Chinese culture, children were symbols of purity and the original nature of humans, which is thought to be innocent and kind. As such, the classic Daoist text Daodejing celebrates infants, as Daoist cultivators sought to return to the purity of childhood before they were sullied by the chaos and turmoil of human existence.

THE LIFESTYLE OF THE ANCIENTS The everyday life of ancient people in Chinese art was quite elegant and refined. People can be seen admiring the flowers in spring and the moon in autumn, tasting tea, strolling through gardens, and relishing “the four arts”—painting, calligraphy, playing the seven-stringed zither, and enjoying the strategy board game of Go. Such scenes reflected the ethos of ancient people who sought long-term fulfillment instead of short-term rewards. Instead of bustling around restlessly, they appreciated slowness and tranquility. One of the works on display is a porcelain dish that depicts a scholar sitting peacefully beneath a tree watching as one of his attendant boys picks lotus flowers from the nearby pond. The scene reminds us of the Song Dynasty scholar-official Zhou Dunyi (1017–73), who penned the famous essay “On the Love of the Lotus.” In it, he writes, “I only love the lotus flower, which emerges out of mud, yet is not contaminated … The lotus flower is the gentleman among flowers.” The term gentleman, or “junzi,” described an ideal, virtuous individual in Confucian philosophy. And thus the lotus flower symbolizes purity and virtue and reminds people to avoid being polluted by the troubles of their external circumstances.

明 黑漆嵌螺鈿八仙賀壽圖托盤 Tray with Daoist figures, Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), dated 16th century. This scene depicts the Eight Immortals, a group of Daoist deities, standing on the riverbank awaiting the arrival of the god of longevity (Shoulao), who flies over on a crane.
DIVINITY IN ART Traditional Chinese art was filled with depictions of divine beings and immortals from Buddhist and Daoist beliefs, a reflection of the ubiquitous spirituality of ancient peoples. One of the most stunning works in The Met’s exhibit is a set of ceramics showing the Buddha reaching nirvana surrounded by eight of his disciples in immense sorrow. The Buddha’s face is round and full, and his expression serene. Very few such polychrome earthenware figurines have survived from the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), and it is almost impossible to find a full set of figurines like this one. Another notable work on display is an early Ming brass sculpture of the ancient Chinese Daoist philosopher Laozi, who quietly meditates with a peaceful and solemn expression on his face. Besides Laozi, the Eight Immortals are also popular Daoist figures frequently depicted in art. An intricately crafted tray shows the Eight Immortals awaiting the arrival of the god of longevity, who flies over on the back of a crane. The Eight Immortals can each be identified by personal attributes like a flute, staff, sword, flower, and gourd. In the background, the pine tree, the crane, the peach tree, as well as the clouds and mist are all symbols of longevity in popular beliefs. Such religious works of figural representation reflected the traditional customs and beliefs of the people at
the time, who valued purity, faith, and virtue. In different artistic mediums, from paintings to jade artifacts, ancient peoples imbued their spirit of piety, self-cultivation, and pursuit of higher wisdom.

idden away in the Jinke Jiuqu River Park in Chongqing, Sichuan Province, this 9,688-square-foot single-family v illa seamlessly blends a traditional Chinese aesthetic with contemporary design in its five floors. The designers of the NNS Institute of Interior Art and Design (NNS) incorporated many natural elements that have symbolic meaning in the Chinese consciousness, like mountains, rivers, pine trees, clouds, the wind, and the moon. For instance, the ancients believed immortals dwelled amid China’s lofty mountain peaks, so mountains became closely intertwined with beliefs in spiritual cultivation and transcendence. These natural elements appear across traditional Chinese culture and imagery, and the designers thoughtfully incorporated such elements throughout the home.

with their belief in self-ref lection and cultivating moral and spiritual character. In traditional homes, the layout of artwork exemplified symmetry, harmony, and balance. And the ancients sought to reflect the natural world that they revered within a home’s decorative details. For the villa’s furnishings, we focused on symmetry and cultural significance. Decorative details include calligraphy, paintings, antiques, scrolls, and “penjing,” the ancient Chinese art of presenting artistically formed flora and landscapes in miniature. Exquisite works of art, like wooden carvings hung on the wall, reflect the owner’s taste and respectability as well as the unique charm of traditional Chinese design. The v illa’s decor is characterized by simple, straight lines. In some cases, we drew from the rectangular designs and colors of modern Western industrial design and put them alongside traditional Chinese-style furniture. Chinese design is filled with symbolism and distinctive features, and we wanted to be flexible as we integrated these features in our design.

ELITE: How did you select modern furniture that conveys Chinese traditions?
NNS: We mixed and matched based on the overall design. Some modern furniture uses Chinese fabrics or designs, like dragon or cloud patterns. In doing so, they present the Chinese style in a modern form. ELITE: Can you discuss the function and significance of the traditional courtyard?
NNS: With a traditional Chinese-style courtyard, the rocks, water, flowers, and plants all have a unique Chinese f lavor and spirit. The courtyard layout should be pleasing to the eye and rich with feeling. The design of a Chinese-style courtyard emphasizes nature. The embellishments are all things that can be found in nature, like mountains, ponds or rivers, f lowers, plants, and trees. Stepping into the courtyard is akin to entering a natural garden, transporting visitors beyond the courtyard. Mountain peaks and flowing streams are common images in Chinese culture, and they are ref lected in the rocks and f lowing water placed around the courtyard. Courtyards typically had a pipe that transported water to the top of the rocks, allowing the water to f low down like the waterfalls that stream down China’s mountain peaks. For the ancient Chinese, convenience was a manifestation of good fortune. If people had water flowing in front of their door, they would not have to travel long distances to collect water, so flowing water became a staple in traditional courtyard design. In modern cities, it is difficult to find a house that reflects nature in this way, so when we started this project, we decided to include the traditional courtyard. Our ultimate goal was to make the exterior and interior of the home mirror each other and to bring nature into the design, thereby reflecting the prosperity and joy of life. This interview has been edited for clarity and brevity.
陣列式可以做出儀式感,另一方面也符合了我們這個戶 型的人物定位與愛好,一舉兩得。 《時尚精英》:庭園的部分,是否可以談談它的用途、文 化傳統、重要性,以及它在整個設計中的作用? 納沃:中式庭院指的就是中式風格的庭院設計,在一山 一水、一花一草間都帶有中國的獨特風格和韻味。這種 庭院的布置風格十分美觀,而且富有情調,加上現在新 中式裝飾風格的興起,能夠起到室內室外呼應的作用。 中式 庭 院 在 設 計上注 重自然性 的 打造,所用裝飾 物,皆是大自然中能夠看到的事物,如山、水、花、草、 樹。進入庭院的人,能從庭院的一花一木,聯想到更多 的場景,讓人回味無窮。庭院的布景,像是自然風光的 再現,走進中式庭院中,與走進一個原始園林的感覺是 相似的。高山流水是中國文化裡十分常見的一種意象, 既然中式庭院中有了代表高山的假山,自然也不能缺少 代表流水的水景了。中式庭院中一般會用水管將水引到 假山高處,然後讓水流從高處跌落,從而打造出「 高山流 水 」這一常見的自然景觀。 在中國人的觀念裡,水是庭院設計中不可或缺的精 靈。對古人來說,生活方便就是有福氣,而門前有水就 是讓他們省得跑遠路去挑水。現代都市卻很難找到這種 要風得風、要水有水的住宅,所以我們在打造整個項目之 時,就要把中國傳統園林設計引入我們的庭院,這就是 我們最終的目的,起到內外呼應的作用,另一方面,風水 上也是要山有山,要水有水,體現了生活的富足與美滿。 注:因版面需要,採訪內容有刪減和修訂。

Initially, market inventory could not satisfy demand, so many developers constructed new buildings in the past few years, leading to an increase in housing inventory on the market, especially luxury units. Currently, apartment construction in the greater New York area is at a 30-year high. In 2018, there were over 60,000 new units under construction. With the influx of apartments on the market, New York City’s housing market is softening. The market is balancing itself, says Donna Rubertone, the sales manager and associate real estate broker at Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty (DGSIR). Home buyer demand still exists, Rubertone says, but buyers are waiting for better prices. Million-dollar condos are still in great demand in Manhattan and have even led to bidding wars. Luxury condos with relatively high prices tend to stay on the market for longer periods. So in terms of prices, the market is adjusting, she says.

Rubertone says that as we look at the effects of the Amazon headquarters announcement on the housing market in Long Island City and the entire Queens borough, it is important to remember that the housing market in Queens in the past 10 years has always been pretty steady. Besides the enthusiasm brought by Amazon, Long Island City on its own has unique advantages. The location is convenient, safe, and trendy. Long Island City is separated from Manhattan only by the East River, which can be conveniently crossed by just one or two stops on the subway. Those who ride the subway past Long Island City can see over 40 new buildings, many with great amenities that attract young white-collar New Yorkers. According to Deirdre O’Connell, the CEO of DGSIR, the new Amazon headquarters will not only affect the housing market in Long Island City but also other places in New York City that Amazon employees can easily commute to. It will include comprehensive information and market analysis of the neighboring areas for the next two Amazon headquarters (one in New York City and the other in Arlington, Virginia), including information about schools and education, transportation, food and drink, moving services, and so on. Rubertone emphasizes that the effects of the new Amazon headquarters will not happen overnight, but instead will be felt over the course of the next few years. The company’s expansion will open up many new job positions in New York. And these new employees will have demands for housing, food, transportation, hospitals, schools, housekeeping services, and more. They will propel Long Island City to grow its service industry and bolster Queens’ overall economic development. Besides Amazon, Google also announced in December 2018 that it would spend $1 billion to create a new campus in downtown Manhattan. The 1.7-millionsquare-foot campus called Google Hudson Square will allow space for 12,000 new employees. With tech giants choosing to expand operations in New York, O’Connell said it has allowed the city to also become a tech hub. Although it’s the most central city on the east coast of the United States, New York has never been widely known for technology. But by gathering talent from around the world and with the help of government tax cuts and other support, New York City has also become a hot location for tech companies, and it seems the city may become the Silicon Valley of the east coast. But unlike Silicon Valley, New York is a more international and multivariate city, a major hub for finance, fashion, media, marketing, and cultural institutions. Although the growth of the tech industry will greatly affect the housing market in New York, technology will not become the only major factor that determines trends in the market.

The other was Sinseollo, a hot pot of seafood, meat, and vegetables cooked at the table in a special brass pot. “So this time, I’m also showing how nice Korean food is, and how healthy Korean food is,” Sophia Lee said. “She [Anastasia] tasted some of it, and she agreed with me.
