How suddenly the morning comes in Spring!

Last night amidst the storm—Ah, who can tell,

On every side you can hear the sweet birds sing.

With wind and rain, how many blossoms fell?

Titled The Uji Princesses, this is one of a pair of six-panel folding screens that was painted in 1912 by Matsuoka Eikyu, who hoped to revitalize the traditional yamato-e style for the modern era.

O

ften described as the world’s first novel, The Tale of Genji is a classic work of Japanese literature that has captivated readers for centuries. It weaves together a vibrant tapestry of aristocratic life in the Heian period centered around the political ascension and romantic escapades of its charismatic protagonist Hikaru Genji, or “Shining Genji.” Filled with humor and wit, the tale was written by the noblewoman Murasaki Shikibu, who served Empress Shoshi in the Heian imperial court (794–1185). In honor of the enduring influence of The Tale of Genji on Japanese art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art has brought together more than 120 works of art from 32 public and private collections in Japan and the United States, including National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties that have never left Japan. For the first time ever outside Japan, rare works will be exhibited from Ishiyamadera Temple—the spot where legend claims Shikibu first began writing the tale.

Left page: Titled The Death of Genji, this manga image of Genji was painted by Waki Yamato and appears in her manga adaptation of the classic The Tale of Genji. This ornately decorated bridal palanquin from the late Edo period (1603–1868) was commissioned for Atsu-hime, the daughter of a high-ranking samurai who married the 13th Tokugawa Shogun. For the daughter of a high-ranking samurai, no event was more significant than her marriage. This bridal palanquin was embellished with arabesque foliage, wild ginger leaves, and family crests. The blinds are made of silk and bamboo and the wood is lacquered with gold and silver hiramaki-e with silvered copper fittings.

In the latter portion of the classic tale, Genji’s political fortunes decline, and he is devastated by the death of his greatest beloved. He leaves the capital and retires to a small mountain temple. The Tale of Genji is thus closely associated with the idea of “mono no aware,” a complex term depicting the beautiful, yet tragic ephemerality of life. It’s an idea closely intertwined with Buddhist philosophy. “The Tale of Genji has inspired generations of artists over centuries, and ours is the first exhibition to explore this phenomenon in such a comprehensive way,” said Max Hollein, director of The Met. The exhibition features art spanning a thousand years, including paintings, calligraphy, silk robes, lacquerware, a palanquin for a shogun’s bride, as well as popular art like ukiyo-e prints and contemporary manga. The exhibition will be on display at The Met from March 5 to June 16, 2019.

(Max Hollein, Director of The Met.)

rowing up, Michelle Wu always loved to keep busy, from shelving books at the library to volunteering at the local hospital. In school, she found free period boring, so she offered her time to the assistant principal, helping her alphabetize and organize her papers. Michelle had an insatiable appetite for helping others, and after some initial run-ins with government bureaucracy, she decided to try to achieve reform through public office. In 2013, Michelle was elected to the Boston City Council at age 28, becoming its youngest member as well as its first Asian-American councilwoman.

WINDING PATH “I get bored easily,” says Michelle, the daughter of two Taiwanese immigrants. “Since I was little, I always wanted to figure out what I could do next.” In school, she was actively involved in many student groups, from science clubs to math teams, and in her senior year, she became president of the National Junior Classical League, one of the largest student-run organizations in the country. She graduated in 2003 as the valedictorian of her class and a U.S. Presidential Scholar, earning her a ticket to Harvard University. During this entire time, Michelle never even considered a career in politics. Her mother always said, “When you grow up, remember three things: Find a

stable job, make a lot of money, and don’t look for trouble.” So Michelle studied hard, majored in economics, and landed a well-paying consulting position in downtown Boston. But one day, a sudden phone call steered her life onto an entirely different course. “You have to come home right now. There’s something very wrong with mama,” her little sister told her. It turned out that their mother was struggling with a mental health crisis. Suffering from depression, she was barely able to eat or sleep and could no longer take care of herself or Michelle’s younger siblings. So Michelle, the oldest of four, returned to Chicago to become the caretaker for her mother and the guardian of her sisters. To boost her mother’s spirits, Michelle decided to fulfill her mother’s lifelong dream of opening a teahouse. She planned every detail—what food and teas they’d serve, what color to paint the walls, and even what music they’d play. But in the end, it was the permit that would be the greatest barrier. Even though Michelle read the entire Municipal Code of

Michelle Wu graduated from Harvard University and Harvard Law School. She lives in the Boston neighborhood of Roslindale with her husband Conor and their sons Blaise and Cass.

Chicago, it still took almost eight months of bureaucracy, inspections, and repeated appeals to finally open their teahouse. When she asked neighboring shopkeepers, they echoed her experiences. At the same time, Michelle was fighting to put her sisters into the right schools and to persuade her mother’s healthcare insurance to cover a provider who would speak Mandarin, because that was the only way her mother would accept treatment. Suddenly, she had to face bureaucracy and government almost every day. “And each of those experiences was incredibly frustrating, not just for my family but for every other family that I’ve talked to who had been in the same place,” Michelle says. SERVING HER COMMUNITY Hoping to help craft better laws and ordinances, Michelle returned to Harvard for law school, bringing her mother and younger sisters with her to Boston. While working at City Hall as a Rappaport Fellow in Law and Public Policy, she wrote a comprehensive online guide to Boston’s restaurant permitting process and spearheaded Boston’s food truck program. Later, when she was elected Councilor-at-Large, she pushed for reforms to Boston’s permitting system. And as a mother of two young boys, she passed

an ordinance for paid parental leave for municipal employees. She also increased government transparency by releasing weekly summaries of the council’s discussions, voting results, and upcoming hearings. To aspiring politicians, Michelle says, "Don't think about the position that you want, but about the difference that you want to make." Now, Michelle lives in a two-family home in Roslindale, a neighborhood of Boston. She lives upstairs with her husband and two sons, and her mother lives downstairs. Not many people live with their parents nowadays, but Michelle says the arrangement enriches her family. “My sons can grow up knowing their grandma, and they get to see ‘wai-po’ everyday and spend time together.”

YouTuber Mike Chen Spreading Positivity One Video at a Time

n one of his latest videos on all-you-can-eat buffets, YouTube vlogger Mike Chen transports viewers to Saigon, Vietnam, to revel in a mouthwatering feast of seafood at Hotel Nikko Saigon. As we watch with anticipation, Mike piles up plate after plate with beguiling delicacies and orders a variety of custom-made lobster and crab, as well as soup and stir-fried noodles. Like always, he brims with contagious enthusiasm as he relishes the scrumptious flavors. It would seem natural for viewers to dislike only

being able to see and not taste all the mouthwatering dishes. Yet his fans say they feel immensely gratified just watching him eat—as if they were experiencing it themselves. Since Mike started his YouTube career six years ago, he has attracted a massive following on his nearly dozen channels. They feature an eclectic variety of content, ranging from food adventures to traditional Chinese culture to supernatural phenomena. For his Strictly Dumpling channel, Mike travels the globe exploring different cuisine, from delicious A5 Wagyu steak in Japan—“the best food I’ve ever had”—to a mountainous 50-pound plate of lobster in Toronto. His most popular channel, Beyond Science, delves into Earth’s mysteries and strange phenomena that cannot be explained by science. Over the years, Mike has amassed millions of subscribers, and his videos have enjoyed over 700 million views. In a world of increasing negativity, he’s going against the tide with videos that radiate sincerity and positivity. “My videos are always made so that after people watch them, they can feel better,” Mike says. “I love it when some people say that after they’ve been going through a pretty depressing period or had a bad day, they watched a video and it made them feel better.”

LIVING HIS PASSION Contrary to expectations, life as a YouTube star can be surprisingly tough. “It’s 24/7, 365. No weekends. No holidays,” Mike says. “That’s why you’ve got to love what you do, otherwise you can’t do it.” And he has faced his fair share of obstacles, from shop owners who refuse to let him film to detractors who post disparaging comments. But Mike doesn’t let them deter him: “Not everyone’s going to love what you do. There’s always going to be people who judge you.” He focuses on the positives, of which there have been many. During his globetrotting adventures, he’s had many heartwarming encounters with strangers. When his team landed in India, he recalls, a lady went out of her way to help him and his team locate their Airbnb accommodations. She “took us, called her friends, guessed which building it would have

been, and insisted on going in,” despite the protests of the security guard who tried to stop her. In the end, it turns out she was right about the building. “That was way beyond what she had to do for us, but she was nice enough to do that.” Over time, he’s been rewarded with a loyal fanbase, many of whom give him encouraging comments, letters of support, and heartwarming gifts, like a fan who mailed him over a dozen packs of unique ramen flavors to try. He feels immensely humbled and grateful for the community that has emerged around his video content. “You build a sense of friendship with your fans, and that’s why I stick with it,” Mike says. In all his videos, he strives to be sincere and stay true to himself. “It’s really about your authentic reactions,” he says. “And that’s why I say, you’ve gotta do what you’re passionate about. Otherwise, you won’t have that enthusiasm no matter how hard you try.” CELEBRATING HIS ROOTS Besides food and travel, a sizable portion of his content deals with Chinese culture, from cultural differences between East and West to ancient stories and legends. “Chinese culture is one of the most underappreciated cultures in the world,” he says. Growing up in the Midwest, Mike didn’t always appreciate his cultural background. “Everybody around me was white. I wanted to be white,” he says. But as he grew older, Mike slowly came to cherish his cultural heritage and its extraordinary vitality. “It’s not just martial arts and fried rice or whatever. It’s actually way deeper than that. And the more you explore it, the more you love it.” In college, Mike began practicing the ancient Chinese spiritual discipline of Falun Dafa, after he witnessed how the practice miraculously transformed his bad-tempered father into a kind and considerate man. The practice combines relaxing meditation exercises with a moral philosophy based on the principles of truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance. Falun Dafa, which epitomizes China’s long-standing tradition of self-cultivation, has helped Mike relieve stress and kept him grounded over the years.

Mike’s videos have galvanized many of his fans to set off on their own food adventures.

And perhaps his practice of Falun Dafa helps to explain his heartwarming geniality and infectious enthusiasm, which have captivated and touched millions across the globe. As a YouTuber, Mike feels a responsibility to do good, to release content that does not merely attract viewers but positively impacts them. “You’ve got a lot of negative content out there. I’m just trying to do my part in creating a more positive environment for people,” Mike says.

OLD-WORLD CHARM ADAPTED FOR MODERN LIVING The Chainsmokers are never getting older in this eclectic house by Peti Lau English text by Angela Feng | Chinese text by Ada Tian Photography by Brittany Ambridge and Nick Onken

A

s one half of the Chainsmokers, a Grammy-winning DJ duo, Alex Pall has built a career based on creativity and innovation. Therefore, it makes sense that he would be drawn to a house made of a mash-up of different architectural styles. This classic Hollywood Hills bungalow was built in the 1930s, with renovations made in the ’80s and ’90s to give it a dash of industrial edge. Such a distinctive home requires an equally remarkable designer. Who would be better for the job than Peti Lau? Peti was born in Israel to Chinese-Vietnamese parents. From opera singing, to opening a restaurant, to starting a clothing line—she has truly done it all. It wasn’t until 2005, when she unexpectedly took on the assignment of designing a resort’s restaurant, that she discovered her passion

for interior design. “It all came very naturally,” Peti recalled. To explain her signature style, Peti coined the term “AristoFreak”, which she describes as “oldworld charm w ith a f lash of the unexpected.” AristoFreak developed during her early career in Thailand, Mauritius, and Europe, and is inspired by her love for traveling. Through bold colors, patterns, and textures, Peti is able to express her worldly inspirations while creating eclectic spaces full of personality. Pall’s home embodies the AristoFreak concept. Peti didn’t shy away from using vibrant colors and busy patterns, even within the same space. “The house had this build-in eclecticism,” Peti explained. “It felt appropriate to approach each interior space as its own unique environment.” Before Peti took on the project, Pall had already installed palm-leaf wallpaper and an orange-velvet couch in the family room. Continuing with the tropical theme, Peti added a natural-f iber coffee table and assorted leopard- and tribal-print

pillows. The orange, red, and blue of the Hassan Hajjaj photography ties the room’s color palette together. To offset the bright colors and patterns, Peti kept the ceiling a clean white and added a vintage Turkish rug. “A classic antique rug is a nice way to stabilize all the stuff that’s going on.” The master bedroom is open and airy, with a high sloped ceiling and f loor-length windows. The neutral color scheme feels intimate and elegant, with the painted velvet drapes adding a touch of drama. To soften the room’s initial industrial feel, Peti gave the plaster on the walls a thick, layered look, imitating aged European interiors. As expected for the home of a musician, many rooms contain musical references. kitchen is the neon sign that accompanied The Chainsmokers onstage at their f irst “SNL” performance. In the great room, the duo’s Grammy Award takes center stage, sitting proudly atop the polished brass credenza. People say that “the house should mirror the soul.” With her eclectic taste and well-traveled eye, Peti certainly accomplishes this goal, crafting a one-of-a-kind home fit for a rock star. Despite being a jill-of-all-trades, she has found design to be her true path. “Design is about listening to your inner voice and having the courage to follow it,” Peti said. “I hope to be doing this until I’m 90 years old!”

alking along First Avenue through Manhattan’s East Village, you may notice one restaurant that stands apar t from the others. Its large floor-to-ceiling window beckons you to peek in at the people sitting at a long communal table relishing bowls of delicious rice noodles. Under a canopy of curved, wooden slats—which look like rows of oversized noodles—a diverse conglomeration of droplet-shaped lights hang from the ceiling, filling the sandy-hued space with warm light. The design of this small rice noodle shop, Hunan Slurp, was recently honored by The Architect’s Newspaper with the 2018 Best of Design Award in the interior design and hospitality category.

CHALLENGING NORMS For many people, “Chinese restaurant” means delicious, f lavorful cuisine, but the interior design— ranging from no-frills to garish—doesn’t quite match the quality of the food, says Sidong Lang, a partner at New Practice Studio. For the older generation of Chinese restaurant owners, the only thing that mattered was ensuring their food tasted delightful. But a new crop of 1990s-born restaurateurs and designers are striving for not just exquisite cuisine, but also excellent customer service and beautiful interior design. Among those who are leading this trend are the designers at New Practice Studio, which is led by

three innovative, ethnically Chinese designers— Nianlai Zhong, Tai-li Li, and Sidong Lang—who were united by their shared philosophies on design. Exposed to both Chinese traditions and Western aesthetic ideals, they marry these two systems with ease in their designs for Chinese restaurants. They skillfully incorporate visual elements that reflect the distinctive cuisine and cultural background of each establishment. The restaurants they’ve designed are elegant and balanced, challenging conventional notions about the appearance of Chinese restaurants.

design elements with the ancient culinary tradition of Sichuan hotpot. The restaurant’s name derives from its owner’s love of the Tang Dynasty, a golden era of cultural diversity and openness. The centerpiece of the design is a large, contemporary mural of four Tang Dynasty court ladies savoring hotpot together. Since the space has an especially high ceiling, the designers contemplated how to enhance that void with some more texture and dimension. In the end, they chose to hang golden mesh screens from the ceiling. Made from coiled aluminum, the screens float above the semicircular banquette seats below, diffusing light throughout the space.

Located in the neighborhood of Columbia University, Atlas Kitchen has three distinct areas: a main section encircled by a stunning landscape mural; a section on the side, decorated with pots of greenery hanging above a communal table; and a semiprivate dining room in the back. (Picture courtesy of Qingshan Wang)

TANGIBLE TO INTANGIBLE In designing their award-winning work, Hunan Slurp, they were faced with a dilemma: What would be the best design for this narrow space? The conventional approach was to put chairs or booth seating along the wall and put tables that can be split or joined together based on the number of people in a party. But the owner of Hunan Slurp wanted to create an air of community, a gathering spot for people to savor casual, scrumptious bowls of noodles together. So instead of seating by the wall, they put long communal tables at the center of the space, drawing inspiration from the long tables commonly seen in China’s night markets. “We wanted to create an atmosphere of everyone gathering to eat together,” said Tai-li Li. No design is perfect, and every choice made requires sacrifice of the alternatives, says Nianlai Zhong. But the final choice should add meaning and take the design to new heights, elevating ordinary to extraordinary. In the tangibles of a design, a designer must know how to create intangible value. While New Practice Studio has designed primarily restaurants, it will eventually expand to include a much broader range of projects, from hotels to organization headquarters.

“What makes us unique is our willingness to try new things, to challenge and transform people’s conventional notions, and to offer a new kind of experience.” Nianlai said. Right page (top): Atlas Kitchen’s central mural, the work of artist Anxiong Qiu, was inspired by the Classic of Mountains and Seas, an ancient Chinese text of mythic geography and legend. f your idea of silverware is mere platters and other f latware such as forks, knives, and spoons, you are in for a treat: Argentiere Pagliai’s collection showcases the pure artistry of a traditional silversmith. Since 1947, Argentiere Pagliai has made highend precious metal pieces inspired by the traditional arts of painting, sculpture, and architecture. The company continues to create with incredible passion and to uphold the silversmith tradition that is endangered across Europe. Those who specialize in silver restoration, in particular, are only a handful. For the current owner, Paolo Pagliai, his passion for silver began when he was just 15, as he watched his father, Orlando, making silver pieces. Now, Pagliai, along with his wife Raffaella and daughter Stefani, upholds his father’s trade as a silversmith and continues the world-renowned family business of Argentiere Pagliai in Florence, Italy.

INSIDE ARGENTIERE PAGLIAI As I enter, I am warmly greeted by Raffaella and Stefani. The showroom we stand in is certainly sumptuous, yet we could almost be sitting around the kitchen table, as customers come and go with the familiar air of family members. As Raffaella busies herself with carefully packing a customer’s order, Stefani and longtime assistant Silvia Staderini tell me more about Argentiere Pagliai. The showroom cupboards are an archive full of historic pieces. For every order placed, a duplicate is made in case of any imperfections, so the shop has a copy of each item made. Our conversation is interrupted only when Stefani, or sometimes Silvia,

INSPIRED BY THE PAST I am shown an album of historic works and also some physical samples, most of which are inspired by, or replicated from, the great designs of the Renaissance and Neoclassical periods. There’s the classical dolphin that Orlando made, which was inspired by a rock crystal dolphin in the Silver Museum at the Pitti Palace in Florence. In the original, the dolphin holds a shell in the natural curve of its body. In Orlando’s version, the whole piece is made of four parts in sterling silver and sits on an

The tail seems to steady the creation, which almost looks like it could topple—a tension difficult to capture in three dimensions without extra structural support. Then, there are the Tiffany & Co. pieces that Orlando designed in the 1960s. Animals feature strongly here, such as for the decorative box shaped as a classical snail. One box is replicated from a Chinese Ming Dynasty toad. Paolo made the decision to stop the collaboration with Tiffany & Co. in 1970 in order to concentrate on Argentiere Pagliai. Now, Argentiere Pagliai makes their Tiffany & Co. designs on special request. There is the fantastical dolphin that Paolo translated into silver from a 17th-century German design found in the Silver Museum at the Pitti Palace in Florence. The curvature of the body gives the piece a dynamic edge; the movement of the creature can be felt in the round as the tail turns and its head seems to proudly emerge. The detail is amazing; each scale is meticulously chiseled and each tooth is finely defined. Paolo’s favorite piece is his reproduction of a 16th-century German goblet, a museum piece he copied as part of an exam. The original is in a museum in Nuremberg. The piece took many months to

make, with the most challenging part being to cut the rock crystal into tiny pieces. One of the Tiffany salt and pepper sets is Stefani’s favorite piece. I can see why: These small pieces each fit in the palm of my hand and are designed to look like fish. Each has a teeny spoon that looks like a shell. The spoons themselves are plated in gold, as are the insides of the fish, presumably so the salt doesn’t tarnish the sterling silver. There’s a rather cleverly designed sterling silver cup that incorporates a wolf on the base. It was made for a Russian hunter to celebrate his kill. The wolf is upright when the cup is not in use, and upside down when used. Orlando himself was a keen

make the 32 11/16 inches tall, solid sterling silver skyscraper, complete with all the architectural elements such as the gargoyles, windows, and of course that famous spire. And, a grandmother from a prominent Florentine family commissioned Pagliai to make 26 sterling silver Misirizzi dolls, a traditional Italian celluloid doll from the 1960s. She gifted these to her grandchildren and had this reminder engraved on them: “Ritornate in asse e proseguite dritti sulla strada dei principi e della rettitudine indicativi”

which means:

“Come back to the path led by principles and righteousness and walk straight on.” Silvia is quick to point out the difference between a machine-engraved object and a hand-engraved object. For hand engraving, the pressure is more precise and refined. No machine can replicate that. Here, everything is handmade—even the engraving. THE WORKSHOP Silvia then takes me behind the scenes to the back of the building, where master silversmith Pagliai is immersed in his work. The air is filled with a different energy: a quiet, almost meditative atmosphere that fine craftsmanship demands. Hand tools hang at the workshop’s entrance, and precious metal objects are scattered across work surfaces in various stages of being made or restored. Up on shelves, there are antique objects d’art such as a baby-pink-and-gold classical-style clock, waiting in line to be restored, and a large chandelier lies on its side, looking a little sad with its still beautiful yet tarnished delicate silver leaves. Pagliai happily tells me that he and his assistant are preparing an 18th-century picture frame from a church that needs to be restored. He holds a tiny brass head in his hand that needs to be cleaned. He then moves on to show me a silver candlestick hallmarked

1872 that an elderly Russian customer brought in. The Russian Orthodox candlestick needs his expert attention to be taken back to its former glory. Pagliai clearly enjoys his work. When I ask if I can photograph him at work, he pulls out two bronze cherubs and places them playfully on the workbench, as if they are in conversation. The forms have been made by pouring molten metal into a wax mold, and once the silver is set, the wax is melted and drained away. This is one part of the traditional and aptly named lost-wax process that Pagliai uses to make his precious creations. At this stage, the forms are imperfect and need to be refined by filing, which Pagliai sits down to demonstrate. Then, the finishing touches are made by hand chiseling and polishing. These refinements can take months, depending on the design requirements. For example, the Tiffany animals take three months to make: A U.S. order placed in July 2017 was delivered in December that year. The most technically challenging aspect of making the decorative boxes is ensuring that the lids fit perfectly, says Stefani. To uphold the silversmith tradition is an important role, Pagliai says, because silversmiths are disappearing across Europe, largely because the work is manual and not by machine. Pagliai believes that it’s very, very important to continue this traditional work with his family. The key for silversmiths to survive is to work through collaborations with tourist shops and specialist schools such as the Sacred Art School–Florence, where students can learn restoration and graduates can apprentice at workshops like Argentiere Pagliai. What remains to be seen is whether the passion of the few remaining silversmiths like Argentiere Pagliai can save the tradition.

onsai is distinct from other visual arts in that its creative medium—a tree—is alive. Unlike a painting or sculpture, which rarely changes after the artist applies the last brushstroke or chisels the last facet, a bonsai continues to grow and develop over its lifetime. Bonsai is a Japanese word, but the art of growing these trees originates in China, where it is called "penjing." A bonsai responds to the artist, and to the environment, and the artist responds in turn in an ever-changing dance. The work of art is never finished, always becoming. With proper care, bonsai can live in their containers for hundreds of years and therefore routinely far outlive their original artists. Bonsai often get passed down over generations, becoming imbued with layers of collaborative, artistic expression. The Pacific Bonsai Museum is one of only a handful of public museums in the world solely dedicated to bonsai. Its bonsai collection includes more than 150 trees from China, Canada, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and the United States—among the finest and most geographically diverse bonsai collections anywhere. When trees are accessioned into the collection of the Pacific Bonsai Museum, they often come with a deep history of artistic intervention—some having been touched by the most revered pioneers in the field. Bonsai created by Xueming Lu, Amy Liang Chang, John Naka (known as the “father of American bonsai”), Ben Oki, Harry Hirao, Vaughn Banting, Nick Lenz, and Melba Tucker are among the most noteworthy in the collection. Aarin Packard, the museum’s curator, who oversees the collection’s artistic and botanical direction, is constantly reminded of what an honor it is to care for these living beings: “Bonsai are a touchstone for me; I not only feel connected to each tree, but to each person who has cared for it in the past and even to those who will care for them in the future after I’m gone.” The oldest tree in the Pacific Bonsai Museum’s permanent collection—a Korean Yew (Taxus cuspidata)— has an estimated birthday in the year 1500 and has been a bonsai since Su Hyung Yoo began training it in 1986. The museum’s largest bonsai is its signature “Domoto Maple,” named after the Japanese-American nurseryman Kanetaro Domoto, who cared for the tree after it was imported to America from Japan as a bonsai in 1915. It has endured trauma and war, standing as a testament to the will to live and the power of perseverance.

Bonsai is an art with ancient roots in China from at least the third century. For the past 100 years, the art has been embraced by North Americans who have evolved it in unique and open-minded ways. In America, bonsai is finding new ground, with fewer rules and a range of new “bonsai-able” tree species. The Pacific Bonsai Museum attracts a worldwide audience by presenting fresh exhibits, the likes of which the world has never seen before. The 2017 exhibit, Natives, was the first exhibit to exclusively present bonsai trees that are botanically endemic to the United States. Natives not only helped make bonsai relatable to American audiences but also celebrated the beauty and diversity of American native trees.
