he four seasons tell us where we are in the story of our year, but did you know that within each one, there are six miniseasons that last 15 days each? At least as far back as 139 B.C., sages in China recorded a seasonal change each year beginning around February 4 and called it Spring Commences. This season is followed by Spring Showers, Insects Awaken, Spring Equinox, Bright and Clear, and Grain Rain. Summer, fall, and winter dance their intricate steps, too, which we’ll explore in this article, for a total of 24 solar terms. Each term is divided into three notable periods or pentads, of which there are 72. This ancient and sophisticated calculation of Earth’s circuit holds so much wisdom that Asian people who have long moved away from agricultural lifestyles still use it to optimize their diet and health and to mark important milestones. UNESCO’s Lists of Intangible Cultural Heritage includes the ancient Chinese understanding of seasonal rhythms. No matter how modernized we become, our bodies will

always be subconsciously in tune (or painfully out of tune) with the year’s inescapable rhythms. Knowing the 24 solar terms can give us insight into what to expect next and what simple choices can help put us in step with nature. The classic four seasons are only the beginning. The solar terms were first recorded in the book Huainan Zi, they are evenly marked on the ecliptic in segments of 15 degrees. The description of the four seasons below is from Wu Cheng’s A Collective Interpretation of the 72 Pentads, a work from the Yuan Dynasty (A.D. 1271–1368).

Otters hunt fish that swim upstream, wild geese migrate back to their northern homes, and seeds begin to sprout. The Lantern Festival falls during this solar term. The first night of the year with a full moon marks the return of spring. “Jingzhe” (Insects Awaken) is the third solar term; peaches begin to blossom, orioles chirp, and caterpillars become butterf lies. In traditional Chinese culture, spring is the time when the earth showers her benevolence on all living beings. In “Xiaoman" (Grain Buds), crops have started to plump but have not yet matured, while some grasses wither in the harsh sunlight. “Mangzhong” (Grain on the Ear) is the busiest time to seed millet and harvest barley and wheat. Sensing the dampness, the mantises come out, the shrikes start to sing, and the mockingbirds become silent. It’s a day to say farewell to flower fairies, as many blossoms are fading. The Dragon Boat Festival is approaching. It’s also a day to commemorate Qu Yuan, a famous exiled intellectual who fought against corruption in the Warring States Period (475–221 B.C.). On “Xiazhi” (Summer Solstice), the Northern Hemisphere sees the longest day and the shortest night, and crops are in their prime. “Xiaoshu” (Lesser Heat) is a period when the weather is hot but not scorching. Fireflies and crickets are active in the balmy breeze, and eagles soar high in the sky. By comparison, “Dashu” (Great Heat) is much hotter. This is when people go hiking and swimming, or enjoy sweet watermelon slices to stay cool. According to folklore, dead grass can turn into fireflies during damp summers. The story implies the cycles of life.

On “Qiufen” (Autumnal Equinox), the sun shines exactly above the equator, and both hemispheres experience an equal amount of daylight. From then on, the Northern Hemisphere sees longer nights and shorter days. The sound of thunder begins to soften, water freezes, insects return to their nests, and flora and fauna wither away. This solar term overlaps with the Mid-Autumn Festival, when families admire the moon and feast on mooncakes together. “Hanlu” (Cold Dew) falls when the dew is so cold that it is about to freeze. This is the best time to appreciate chrysanthemums in all their many shapes and colors. On “Shuangjiang” (Frost’s Descent), dew turns to frost. As yang recedes, plants shed leaves and wither, insects go dormant, and wolves start to hunt. WINTER: A SOLEMN TIME During “Lidong” (Winter Commences), water begins to turn to ice, the earth hardens, and pheasants look for clams in the lakes. Warming foods and tonics are suggested to prepare for the frigid winter: chicken soup, ginger duck soup, mutton hot pot, and the like. “Xiaoxue” (Minor Snow) embraces the dormancy of winter, and the snowy season begins. “Daxue” (Great Snow) heralds the heaviest snow, and the “winter-crying” birds go silent. On “Dongzhi” (Winter Solstice), yin gradually abates and yang rises, enabling the spring water to flow. Elk, which are associated with yin in traditional Chinese culture, drop their antlers during this period. People in ancient times believed that spring would arrive in the 81 days after elk drop their antlers. “Xiaohan” (Minor Cold) is the bitter-cold stage of winter when wild geese begin to f ly northward, swallows build nests to prepare for the new year, and pheasants crow from distant fields. “Dahan” (Great Cold) is the last solar term of the year. But the frigidity doesn’t stop people from welcoming the Chinese New Year: They paste New Year’s couplets on their doors and bring new purchases home. Although rivers are still frozen, hens start to hatch chicks and watch out for attacks from eagles. Knowing the 24 solar terms gives us a glimpse into the beauty and characteristics of seasonal changes.

STRAYING FROM THE STRAIGHT AND NARROW PATH The Disobedient Prophet
English by Eric Bess Translated by Anne Chan
T
he story of the disobedient prophet is told in the Bible in the book of 1 Kings. The story goes as follows: A man of God traveled from Judah to Bethel. God spoke through him and cursed an altar where King Jeroboam made an offering. Jeroboam ordered the man of God to be arrested, but Jeroboam’s hand shriveled up when he pointed to identify him. Jeroboam a sked the man of G od to pray to God to restore his hand. The man of God granted Jeroboam’s wish, and Jeroboam’s hand was restored. Then, Jeroboam invited him to eat and drink, but the man of God responded that God had commanded him to not eat and drink on this journey nor return home the way he came. An old prophet, who lived in Bethel, heard about what the man of God did and sought him out. The old prophet found the man of God sitting under an oak tree and invited him to eat and drink with him.

Again, the man of God explained God’s command. Then, lying, the prophet told the man of God that God spoke to him also and that God informed him to bring back the man of God to eat and drink. The man of God listened and returned with the old prophet. While they ate, God, through the old prophet, informed the man of God that he had disobeyed God’s orders and therefore would not be buried with his ancestors. After their meal, the man of God got on his donkey and rode away but was attacked and killed by a lion. His body was left on the road, with the lion and donkey next to it. The old prophet heard about the attack and went to find the man of God’s body. He took the body home and buried it in his family’s tomb.
THE DISOBEDIENT PROPHET
AND THE UNDERPAINTING Jean-Léon Gérôme was a 19th-century French academic painter who had recently regained popularity. In his painting The Disobedient Prophet, Gérôme reveals to us the part of the story from 1 Kings and part of the painter’s process. The focal point, to the left in the composition, is the lion and the lifeless figure of the man of God. The lion stands with its head high and with a paw on the man’s chest. The direction of the lying figure, foreshortened, draws our eye toward the right side of the composition. On the right side, in the distance, we see the old prophet riding his donkey and waving his arms. Other, unidentifiable figures are visible in the distance. The man of God’s lone donkey is at the far right of the composition, but it faces back toward the old prophet to keep us from leaving the picture plane. This is an unfinished painting by Gérôme, and we’re looking at an underpainting. The foreground is painted in sepia-like colors, most likely burnt umber, white, and black. The sky and distant background have pastel colors applied for the purposes of atmospheric perspective.

These details reveal cer tain qualities about Gérôme’s painting process. Gérôme was a formalist and not a colorist. In other words, his primary concern was the three-dimensional form of the objects and not extravagant color. Gérôme would accomplish the three-dimensionality of the whole composition in lights and darks and then glaze (apply a thin, transparent color) and scumble (apply a thin opaque color) over this three-dimensional foundation. This three-dimensional foundation would have influenced the future decisions that Gérôme made and the painting’s overall look. KEEPING TO THE RIGHTEOUS PATH A good journey starts with a good question, and I’m left asking how the story from 1 Kings, the painting, and the painter’s process can possibly guide us to become better people. The story about the man of God is about straying from the straight and narrow path of truth. The man of God is tricked by the old prophet who pretends to be a man of God also, and the man of God suffers for confusing the truth of God with the lie of the prophet. In Gérôme’s painting, the man of God’s dead body is foreshortened to lead our eye to the old prophet, and the man of God’s donkey faces the old prophet as well. The old prophet, instead of God, becomes the centerpiece, the deciding factor of the man of God’s fate. To me, the old prophet’s actions only appear to be kind; they are actually symbolic of how the appearance of kindness can lead people of God to disobey God. To get to the truth of the matter, we must ask ourselves how the old prophet’s lies affected the man of God. The man of God is lied to and lets this one moment decide his fate, a fate that leads him away from God. God makes it a point to punish the man by having him not buried with his ancestors—ancestors who I presume were also people of God. I take this to mean that the man of God, for his disobedience and lack of faith, will not dwell with

his ancestors or God in the afterlife. Instead, he will dwell with what he ultimately followed: the old prophet and his lies. To me, the fact that the old prophet first lies to the man of God to get him to disobey God and then takes the man of God’s body and buries it in his own family tomb, instead of with the man’s ancestors, is symbolic of the idea that the old prophet is a false prophet. He leads doubtful souls to an afterlife outside of God’s realm. The old prophet’s supposed kindness, a lie masked by the beauty of kindness, does tremendous harm to the man of God: His life ends, and his very soul is separated from God. How often are we led astray by people, objects, interests, and so on? How often do we let kindnesses veiled in untruths lead us away from following the righteous path, a path made specifically for us? The man of God had God with him the whole time. God spoke to him, and God’s message was within him, yet the man was led astray the moment he doubted God’s direct message to him.
If our foundation accepts lies as truth, disregards righteousness, and is misled by colorful expressions instead of searching for the underlying truth, we may instead find our future—like the man of God who was unable to be buried with his ancestors— as a constant reminder of our inauthenticity in the presence of God. The 1 Kings story of the disobedient prophet and Gérôme’s process are, for me, a warning to discern colorful lies from the truth in our hearts and minds. Having this discernment can steer us toward our authentic and righteous path.

FORM AND COLOR How does Gérôme’s underpainting tie into this? The underpainting is the truth, the basic foundation of the painting in that it sets a path for everything else that will be added to it. The colors are later applied to adorn the forms, the truths, to which they are attached. The underpainting, in which only form is depicted, addresses—for the formalist painter—the most important aspect of painting: the effects of light on the world. Light illuminates the object’s sensuous reality, its truth. All else is secondary. A good painting is imminent if a good foundation is laid. I think we are similar to this as human beings: We will lead a good life if we have a righteous foundation guiding us. If God is the creator of our underpainting—the underlying truth of our lives— and illuminates our path with divine light, then our future will be one in which we are joined with our ancestors, which I see as being symbolic of that which is authentic to us.

he movie begins on a cloudy summer night in Tianjin, China. Dim street lights cast a warm glow over a park bench where a young girl lies across her mother’s lap. In smooth, melodic tones, the mother is recounting the story behind her daughter’s name, when suddenly the sky breaks into a downpour. Just as their pleasant evening was ruined by the rainstorm, the pair will soon find their lives thrown into chaos. Up We Soar tells the true story of a family that fell victim to the religious persecution of Falun Gong, an ancient spiritual practice, in China. The documentary depicts the point of view of the young daughter, Fuyao, who was forced to go through her adolescent years on her own, as well as that of her mother, Huijuan, who was imprisoned for her faith in Falun Gong’s core principles: truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance. Though their journey was full of hardship, the two remained unwaveringly faithful to their values. Released in December 2020, Up We Soar has already received plenty of critical acclaim. It is director Yan Ma's first full-length animated film. It won the Best Feature award at the Los Angeles Animation Festival. It has also been selected by several other prestigious festivals, including Sparks Animation Festival and CINANIMA.

AN INSPIRING JOURNEY In July 1999, the lives of millions of Chinese citizens, including this ordinary family, changed forever. The Chinese regime began the persecution of Falun Gong. Fuyao’s father was arrested, publicly humiliated, and sent to a labor camp. Her mother was fired from her job and placed under house arrest. She and Fuyao were confined to a small, one-bedroom apartment in the school where she used to teach. They were banned from going to grocery stores and allowed to shower only once a month. The situation went from bad to worse when Huijuan was forced to f lee the city, leaving Fuyao with her grandparents. For months Huijuan traveled the country, spreading the truth about Falun Gong until she was arrested. For the young Fuyao, this was all hard to comprehend. She went from being like every other kid to suddenly being parentless and ostracized by her peers. She didn’t understand—why was the practice that helped her father recover from hepatitis suddenly illegal, and why were good people like her parents being treated like criminals?

As a result, he decided to use this method to tell the story. “We used animation as a means of expression— every scene comes from the family’s actual experiences, down to the smallest details,” Ma said in an interview with Elite Lifestyle Magazine. However, he then faced the challenge of ensuring that the film maintained the authentic feeling of a conventional documentary. As the majority of the story is told through animation, it could be easy for viewers to forget that it is based on real events. To imbue the film with authenticity, it was important to choose the right animation technique and style. Motion capture was used to make things look as realistic as possible. Because the film deals

significant social issues. While Fuyao’s story is heartbreaking, it is unfortunately a common one. Tens of millions across China have been persecuted for their beliefs, with countless families being torn apart. According to Ma, the harmful inf luence of the Chinese Communist Party can be felt all around the world—especially with the chaos wreaked by the COVID pandemic. When the virus first emerged, the Chinese regime attempted to hide it by suppressing whistleblowers. Doctors who tried to reveal the truth were silenced and imprisoned, similar to the way Falun Gong practitioners are treated. Ma hopes this film will inspire audiences during times of such tumult and adversity. “It is a heavy story, but it still feels very hopeful. Though Fuyao and her mother go through unimaginable hardships, it
doesn’t make them resentful. Rather, they responded with courage and compassion,” he said. The movie is a testament to the strength of the human spirit when one doesn’t lose grasp of one’s values. It was Huijuan’s unwavering faith in her beliefs that helped her overcome some of her most difficult obstacles. In 2009, Huijan was finally released from prison, and the entire family was reunited. Fuyao’s father had been released three years earlier. They were eventually able to flee China and receive asylum in the United States. Today, Fuyao lives in New York and is a successful news anchor. W
hen Liu Xitong was asked by a film crew to write four words in Chinese calligraphy, he agreed immediately, heartily, and for reasons the crew did not yet know. Once a famous calligrapher back home in China, Liu had since left the country where the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) persecuted him for his faith. In doing so, he had set aside his art in his quest to pursue justice after he moved to the United States. On the day of the shoot, Liu and the documentary producers discussed the calligraphy scene as they prepared the set. The documentary When the Plague Arrives, produced by NTD Television, is about humanity at a crossroads during the turbulent times of the pandemic. In the film, historical events are shown in parallel with the present day. Epidemic diseases once threw ancient civilizations in both the East and West into disarray and not only brought death and mayhem but also cast a harsh light on those societies that no longer upheld human dignity. Liu would be writing a four-word Chinese idiom taken from the ancient Chinese text Four Books, in which philosopher Zhu Xi (1130–1200) translated the Analects of Confucius.

A CHAOTIC, EVIL SOCIETY “I was sentenced to three years in the Chinese Communist Party’s illegal labor camp and spent four years in prison,” Liu said in an interview after the film was completed. These were years of suffering. “I lost my freedom and the environment for creation, studying, and writing. I endured violent beatings and insults from Chinese Communist Party prison guards and other prisoners. I had the blood tests they give to those marked for organ harvesting. These years were like a contest between life and death.” This past year, the advent of COVID-19 and the fallout of the Chinese communist regime’s mishandling of the situation also put a global spotlight on the regime’s other misdeeds—the decades-long, brutal persecution that affected Liu being but one of them. After the CCP outlawed the practice of Falun Gong on July 20, 1999, thousands went to Beijing for redress, and Liu went too. ART THAT HEALS Liu said that after his release, he threw himself into artistic creation the way a fish needs water. His primary mission, as it had been since July 20, 1999, was spreading the truth about the persecution of Falun Gong amid the powerful regime’s propaganda. But every other hour he had, he dedicated himself to the art of calligraphy, and he created thousands of works. Meanwhile, he heard strange rumors being spread about him: that his fame as an artist had plummeted when he took up his spiritual practice, that he had been disowned by his parents, or that he’d committed suicide. None of these were true, but instead of refuting the gossip verbally, Liu put on a calligraphy exhibition in 2007. Despite the controversy, or possibly because of it, the exhibition was packed. Visitors marveled at Liu’s work and told him how different his exhibition was from others they had seen. Several attendees told him that it felt like the whole venue

radiated compassion and harmony, and that it left an unforgettable impression on them. Even though propaganda against Falun Gong and its adherents was still being published by China’s state-run press, Liu’s exhibition was lauded by newspapers, and his comments about traditional art and morality were published as well. But days after the exhibition, Liu was detained by police again, and his wife was also abducted by officers after they ransacked his home. He was interrogated and detained for a month. Then in 2008, he was illegally sentenced to four years in prison, during which time he faced periods of intense torture—all because he would not give up his dedication to Falun Gong. Liu credits Falun Gong for opening his eyes to virtue, morality, the dignity of human beings, and the importance of God, and says that this undoubtedly influenced his work. In fact, before he started practicing Falun Gong, Liu said, his art was a completely different style.

“Since childhood, I have been blessed,” Liu said by email. He immersed himself in great ancient works like those of Qing Dynasty Emperor Kangxi and Tang Dynasty Emperor Taizong, and studied silk manuscripts from the Qin and Han dynasties, bronze inscriptions, and various scripts. There were thousands of years of treasures to mine, each era and great scholar imbuing the art with something of their own, Liu said. In studying the greats, Liu developed his own style and his own scripts. “Chinese calligraphy is not only a treasure of the traditional Chinese culture that was passed down by the gods, but it is a high art that is unique in this world,” Liu said. “The history is long, and its development is colorful.” But Liu grew disillusioned in his worldview as he got older. He recounted the arrogant and selfish culture he was immersed in, surrounded by CCP members and working in Party-affiliated departments. This soon seeped into his art, and he followed fads and trends rather than tradition, creating works in modern or “cursive” calligraphy styles. His exhibitions were well-received, praised in the press, and honored with awards. Then in the 1990s, he had a profound awakening. Falun Gong was introduced to the public in 1992, and millions started practicing in just a few years. In 1996, Liu began practicing too. Falun Gong includes meditation exercises and the three principles of truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance. It is part of the ancient Chinese tradition of self-cultivation. Millions took up the practice and, seeing improvements in their mental, physical, and spiritual health, spread the practice through word of mouth. It was a return to traditional Chinese culture and morality that the spirituality-starved people craved. Liu said that these principles held a mirror up to his soul and dramatically changed his worldview. He felt he had strayed so far from the traditional principles and aesthetics that guide the art of calligraphy. He had become a selfish person who held no high ideals or traditional morals, and this was plainly evident in his work. Liu didn’t second-guess his epiphany—he burned all of his modern works and vowed to once again uphold traditional ideals. The art of calligraphy is the pinnacle of a culture believed to be divinely inspired,
and Liu’s gift was a blessing from God. He intended to honor that. “If an artist upholds God’s instructions and uses the skills given by God to express the enlightening beauty of God’s kingdom in this world, to connect humans in harmony with the world, advocating virtue and goodness … the works will reflect a beauty that truly moves people,” Liu said. He wanted his works to reflect the truth and beauty of the universe. Calligraphy, being a reflection of the artist’s soul, required Liu to dedicate himself to exactly that. He decided to let truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance guide him. Calligraphy is not an art that benefits from an impassioned state and frenzied mind. You need, instead, a pure mind in harmony with the virtues, Liu explained. “The process of calligraphy is the exquisite display of the mystery and science of life and the universal, rendered visible by the tip of the pen,” Liu said. “Calligraphy is a wonderful combination of innate human potential and acquired effort laid bare on the paper.” A few years ago, Liu was finally able to leave China. When he arrived in the United States, he set aside his passion for the art in order to focus more time on telling the truth about the CCP’s violent persecution of Falun Gong. But when word of mouth brought Liu’s talent to the attention of a documentary producer, he felt gratified to be able to use his gift in aid of his mission. “It has always been my wish to continue that path of self-cultivation, return to tradition, and leave a reference to the art of calligraphy for posterity,” Liu said.

I’d like to introduce three healthy and delicious dishes that counteract the effects of heavy holiday meals: the “unparalleled four-agents-decoction,” the “anti-three-hypers hotpot,” and a refreshing tea.
THE UNPARALLELED FOUR-AGENTS-DECOCTION The “unparallelled four-agents-decoction” (“si wu tang” in Chinese) was first made by Mr. Sun Yat-Sen, the founding father of the Republic of China. The origin explains its nickname: “Sun Yat-Sen’s Si Wu Tang.” In his early years as a doctor, Sun used to tell his patients that the most important treatment other than medicine is nutrition. He made an exclusive and nutritious recipe that contains four ingredients: soybean sprouts, tofu, black fungus, and long yellow daylilies. These can be found at many Asian grocery stores and cooked together into a soup or stew. Sun’s recipe improves digestion, preserves spleen-stomach harmony, and dispels waste and toxins from the body.
Soybean Sprouts: In ancient times, soybean sprouts were called yellow curls of soybeans. Soybeans grow when placed in water. The peel breaks down, and the roots grow long. The germ is rich in enzymes that help digest protein, starch, and fat. In the past, people used to eat soybean sprouts to expel internal dampness and strengthen the spleen-stomach.

Tofu: Also known as bean curd, tofu is prepared by coagulating soy milk and pressing the curds into solid white blocks. It is rich in protein and helps form more red blood cells. It is often used as a vegetarian substitute for meat. Black Fungus: This popular mushroom grows on fallen logs in the wild and can decompose wood to enrich its nutrition. Likewise, black fungus can reduce the risk of a variety of conditions in the body. When cooked thoroughly, black fungus returns to its original gelatin-like texture and can nourish the stomach. However, eating black fungus when it is not fully cooked might result in gastroenteritis.

THE ANTI-THREE-HYPERS HOTPOT The hotpot is a family-style Chinese dinner where participants boil a variety of raw ingredients, piece by piece, in a large, continuously boiling pot in the middle of the table. According to a popular proverb in Northern China, “Eating radish in winter and ginger in summer can keep doctors away.” I recommend adding radish, baby corn, Chinese yam, and okra to the soup base of any hotpot. These ingredients can reduce levels of blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol (the three “hypers”). The New Year’s feast is not complete without fish, poultry, beef, or pork, as well as all kinds of seasonings. The anti-three-hypers soup base is a perfect match for all kinds of meat, vegetables, and glass noodles.
THE BEST DIGESTIF: SOUR PLUM DRINK After a delicious New Year’s dinner, why not try a sour plum drink, an easy-to-make beverage? The drink was once many people’s childhood favorite. It keeps us hydrated in summer, and lukewarm sour plum drink is a great choice in winter. The ingredients of sour plum drink include smoked plums, hawthorns, roselles, and licorice, which can all be obtained at traditional Chinese medicine pharmacies. Smoked plums are sour in flavor and serve to reduce body fat. Hawthorns, in TCM prescriptions, can improve digestion. Roselles can lower the level of cholesterol and are antioxidant, and licorice adds a bit of sweetness to the f lavor. Adding rock or crystal sugar will make the drink even sweeter, and dried osmanthus blossoms make it more fragrant. The sour plum drink is an amazing choice after dinner.

U
pon stepping into this 3,000-square-foot flat in the luxurious Sky Oasis building in Macau, one is instantly filled with a sense of serenity. The space is designed to encourage meditative reflection and help residents achieve a state of zen. With a seamless fusion of Japanese aesthetics and modern Western touches, it is the embodiment of timeless luxury. The home was designed by Max Lam of Max Lam Designs, an award-winning, Hong Kong-based interior design studio. “The fundamental and ultimate goal of my design is to improve people’s way of living and interaction within the space they are in,” Lam said in a statement on his website. With this tranquil oasis, he certainly achieved that goal, providing residents with a meditative and fully engaging living experience.

Soft, demure lighting adds to the home’s calm and cozy ambience, inviting residents to leave their worries at the door. A curvaceous wooden structure separates the living room from the kitchen and dining area, adding a splash of zen. Wooden poles of varying heights are connected to form a half spiral encircling a coiling ceramic vase and f loral arrangement created by local Hong Kong artists. The living room takes on a slightly more modern, westernized appearance. Filled with neutral tones consisting mostly of soft browns, grays, and white, it feels simple yet elegant. Custom-made low furniture with sharp silhouettes include a lengthy couch and two burnt-orange chairs that frame the television. BEAUTY IN THE DETAILS Visible through the curving centerpiece by the entryway is the Japanese tearoom and the master bedroom. Japanese-inspired folding doors offer privacy, while making sure the rooms are easily accessible. In the master bedroom, sakura-patterned wooden screens, an Art Deco-style vanity, and a smooth stone wall come together to create an air of subtle opulence. In the connecting tearoom, a landscape painting by San Chiu Yan is the focal point. Ceramic tea ware by Ryan and Wy, as well as a tailor-made

Every doorknob is embellished with knots that are believed to bring peace and harmony and were crafted by a Japanese knot-tying artist. Even the aroma of the home has been carefully cultivated by a scent expert—an aroma of green tea with hints of sandalwood. After all, beauty lies in the details, and details are what lead the way to the inner self.

LIVING YOUR INNER POET Hufeng Courtyard Villa English by Megan Wang | Translated by Ada Tian Photography by Gangqiang Liu, Shukai Xu
T
he region in China south of the Yangtze River is known for its breathtaking landscape. Jiang Nan, as it’s known, was a favorite subject of many acclaimed Chinese poets. Today, not only do people express a wish to read about the region’s stunning beauty in literature, some of us also hope to experience it right inside our own home. In the suburb of Hangzhou, China, a team of interior designers from GFD Interior undertook the challenge and in doing so, also brought forth the beauty and virtues of traditional Chinese culture.
DISCONNECT TO RECONNECT One such virtue is inner serenity. In ancient times, Chinese scholars meditated routinely in preparation for intensive learning. Like them, modern people perform best in many aspects of life when they maintain a calm, reflective spirit. Living inside this villa in Hangzhou naturally puts one in a tranquil state secluded from the bustle of modern society. In the courtyard, the plants flutter in the breeze, while streams of water flow down the rocky garden, forming ripples upon ripples in the pond. When guests or residents immerse themselves in this precious little ecosystem, they are better able to listen to their inner voice. The home’s interior also maintains a calming ambiance. The white marble wall in the living room resembles an ink drawing of some ethereal landscape, 66│

A prominent feature of traditional Chinese residences, the courtyard is more than its aesthetics. It provides the owners with a more intimate connection to nature without having to step out of the house. It also maximizes the home’s natural light. The rocky garden and rippling pond emulate a mini version of Southern China’s breathtaking landscape.

CHERISH TRADITIONAL VALUES Architecture, along with its interior design, is a reflection of identity and values. Throughout this Hangzhou villa, we find this to be true, as many elements are influenced by the virtues of traditional Chinese culture. Besides the emphasis on serenity, the incorporation of the courtyard also maximizes natural lighting and improves ventilation, exemplifying the benefits of respecting harmony with nature. The concept of respecting the elders is also prominent, as the elders’ bedroom is placed on the first floor, steps away from the courtyard and living room, to ensure safety and convenience. Around the house, we also see artworks depicting pine trees, which represent the desired longevity for the family’s elders. Away from the city hustle, this luxurious villa is a haven to clear the mind, restore energy, and reconnect with virtues we once had.

CHINESE NEW YEAR ELEGANCE We’ll soon be through the threshold of a new year when the golden ox will take the spotlight in the Chinese zodiac. You can pay homage to this ancient symbol during a Lunar New Year party, starting with your home’s entryway, a traditionally symbolic place in Chinese culture. Try bunches of gorgeous peonies and wintersweet flowers to usher in prosperity and good fortune. Turn the living room into a joyful site of festive conversation and timeless significance with fresh decor for the occasion: cushions, carpets, and red-rimmed tableware. Pour the tea in oriental style, serve a melon-seed snack, and stir old memories with new ones into a rich brew that won’t be forgotten.

new residential complex, 75 Kenmare is situated in the heart of NoLita, in Lower Manhattan. "NoLita," short for North of Little Italy, is an artsy historic neighborhood brimming with chic vintage shops and boutiques, enchanting restaurants, and art galleries. Designed by acclaimed New York architect Andre Kikoski, the building consists of 38 luxury apartment homes where f loor-to-ceiling glass windows soar to sophisticated heights. Lenny Kravitz Design helmed the interior design of the building. The rocker’s distinctive touch is luxurious and layered, the epitome of modern elegance. Kravitz incorporated NoLita’s unique charm and vitality into
the interiors of 75 Kenmare. A rich variety of materials mingle, such as gorgeous natural stone, textured metal, and solid oak. Kravitz’s disarming and inviting combinations further highlight the residence’s charisma. The building includes a comprehensive fitness center, a futuristic automated parking garage, and an interior landscaped courtyard. On top of the worldclass amenities, the penthouse apartment takes luxury to a new level, boasting a large private terrace. The couch and dining table as well as other furniture pieces were chosen from the collection of high-end French brand Ligne Roset, whose designs are bold and stylistic. Such choices further encapsulate the beauty of contemporary luxury in the apartment homes. “Compound Penthouse B” includes a living room, a dining room, a kitchen, three bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms. It has a total interior area of 2,108 square feet. In addition, there are two private outdoor patios. One is 657 square feet and connects to the living room through floor-to-ceiling windows and doors. The other spans 493 square feet across the roof terrace above the living room. Floor-to-ceiling windows and doors let natural light in, while neutral-tone oak f loors add warmth. The kitchen cabinets juxtapose matte white with elm and are paired with white marble countertops. Gaggenau appliances from Germany blend classic and modern tastes. In the master bedroom, warm, light tones prevail, while dark blue and green add richness and a soothing
visual hierarchy. Oversized custom windows provide a panoramic city view, while welcoming plenty of sunlight. At night, the atmosphere in the bedroom is quiet and private. The multi-sensory experience is heightened in the master bathroom, where a heated marble f loor and luxurious Italian Devon&Devon bathtub melt away weariness and tension. 75 Kenmare Street, New York, NY 10012 │79
