right pink cherry blossoms against a brilliant blue sky is a sight unlike any other in the world. “Sakura” is the cherry blossom’s name in Japan. They flutter slowly to the ground as crowds mill about, taking in springtime’s beauty. Across the country, the atmosphere shifts. Buds bloom. Winter draws to an end. Just as spring brings the promise of fresh beginnings, the sweet scent of the sakura brings hope and cheer. Family and friends gather to admire the scenery and enjoy warmer weather.

A REVERED TRADITION “Hanami” is the Japanese word for “the act of admiring cherry blossoms,” which is a respected tradition there. It dates back to the Nana period (A.D. 710–794) when a Japanese envoy to China brought back the custom of enjoying plum blossoms. Festivals dedicated to sakura began in the Heian period (A.D. 794–1185). Back then, Japanese people believed gods signaled a year of good harvest through cherry blossoms. So they prayed, made offerings, and feasted to honor the sacred trees. Hanami—sakura festivals as we know them now—were first popular in the imperial court. Nobles held grand viewing ceremonies that included singing, dancing, feasting, and drinking. Over time, the hanami tradition spread to the common people and became widely enjoyed all over Japan. One of the largest hanamis to ever take place was Hideyoshi Toyotomi’s Cherry Blossom Party in 1598, held at the famous Daigo-ji Temple in Kyoto. The temple was in a state of disrepair until Toyotomi invited thousands to attend his event. With over 700 cherry blossom trees planted around the temple, the extravagant fete further cemented the hanami as a valuable part of Japanese culture. After that, Daigo-ji Temple was revitalized and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

大和之櫻

image for the Japanese. Famously, Utagawa Hiroshige depicted several blooming cherry boughs in his vertical-format landscape series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. Hiroshige was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist and considered one of the last great masters of the tradition. The legendary sakura found its way into famous poetry of the day, beginning in the Heian period (A.D. 794–1185). “Waka” is one of the most recognized forms of Japanese poetry and the basis for haiku. The cherry blossom often appears in the Kokin Wakashu, one of the earliest anthologies of waka poems compiled by Emperor Uda. More than beautiful, the cherry blossom represents impermanence. Despite being so widely adored, the blossoms last for a very short period of time. Cherry blossoms bloom once a year for only a week—maybe two at best. In fact, much of Japanese literature is filled with a sense of acceptance—even celebration—of impermanence. “Mono no aware,” which translates to “the pathos of things,” is the Japanese term for the awareness of impermanence, or the transience of things. It originates from The Tale of Genji, a classic work of Japanese literature from the Heian period that is often considered the world’s first novel. The cherry blossom has come to embody this phrase, representing a bittersweet fondness for the brevity of life. While f lowers are typically associated with femininity, the cherry blossom has a masculine side, too. They are a symbol of the samurai’s bravery. These men faced death with courage. As the ancient Japanese proverb states, “the best blossom is the cherry blossom; the best man is the warrior.” Just as the cherry blossom falls at its prime, samurai were

The blossom has planted its seed in people’s hearts, making its way into everyday life. Cherry blossom viewing was first introduced to the United States in 1912, when Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo gifted 100 cherry blossom trees to Washington, D.C. Over time, hanami culture spread across America. Now, every year from late March to early April, D.C. holds a national cherry blossom festival. New York, Los Angeles, and Vancouver hold their own celebrations, as do other cities across North America. In an age when people are more isolated, the cherry blossom has the power to bring people together. “Under the cherry blossom, there are no strangers,” Japanese poet Kobayashi Issa said. No matter how vast their differences, individuals can come together in mutual admiration of the beauty of the sakura.

ach season briefly holds its unique splendor: fluttering cherry blossoms, blooming hydrangeas, dramatic red maple leaves, and pristine white snow. But, as the Japanese poet Fujiwara no Okikaze lamented, “Hundreds of flowers and thousands of grasses all flourish yet all will wither.” In order to hold on to each invaluable instant, the Japanese carved their observations of the subtle changes of each season into a wide variety of delicate confections named “wagashi.”

春天的櫻、夏天的繡球花、秋天的紅葉,與冬天的白雪, 每一個季節都擁有屬於自己的一片美景。可惜,光景再 好,花葉終會落,白雪終會融,如同日本歌人藤原興風寫 下的哀嘆: 「 千草百咲花,雖盛無一不凋零。」

A LEGENDARY FRUIT SETS THE STAGE Wagashi is traditional Japanese confectionery. “Wa” signifies Japan, and the remaining syllables refer to desserts made from fruit. Legend has it that wagashi originated from an ancient myth. When Emperor Suinin, the 11th emperor of Japan, fell ill, he heard that far away there exists an Eternal Land. There, a special fragrant fruit grows that’s used as medicine to achieve immortality. So the emperor sent out a courtier named Tajimamori to hunt for the fruit. After 10 years, Tajimamori finally returned with the special fruit, only to find the emperor had already passed away. Devastated, this loyal courtier planted the branches of the fruit tree beside the emperor’s imperial tomb, then followed his leader to the grave by ending his own life. The special fruit associated with wagashi’s origin is the tangerine. Centuries have passed, yet Japanese people still see tangerines as a traditional symbol of longevity. This little fruit sparked the beloved tradition of eating carefully crafted small sweets, especially to mark important events and people throughout the year. June in Japan brings heat, humidity, and rain that make people susceptible to illness. To ward off this misfortune, a tradition is celebrated every year on the last day of June. It’s known as “Nagoshi no Harae” (the Purification Ritual of Summer's Passing). Members of the imperial court traditionally snacked on ice on that day. Peasant families had no access to ice, so they made a dessert with a base that has a texture in between jelly and “kuih” and delightfully resembles the cooling effects of ice. It consists of a white triangular “uirō-mochi” (Japanese steamed cake) made from rice f lour, and a layer of red adzuki beans on top. The red color of the beans on top is believed to drive away evil spirits. The treat is called Minazuki, which also means June. Minazuki is delicious, and it also cleanses away midyear chaos and disaster, while attracting blessings for the coming months.

returned from their pilgrimages to China. Elements of China’s Song Dynasty culture quickly spread throughout Japan. New food traditions took off, too, such as the thick lamb soup and the steamed bun. But the Japanese replaced the meat ingredients in the treats because of their religious beliefs. Red adzuki beans and wheat flour took center stage. The thick, jellied confection we know as Yokan today, and many other popular sweets, are the result of such modifications. With these new recipes as a foundation, people in each historic period further enriched them.

The desserts’ appearances changed in the Muromachi period (1336–1573) to ref lect the culture of the time. Some wagashi were exquisitely carved into peaches, the legendary moon rabbit, and other elements with Chinese influence. Soon, symbols of Japan’s culture, such as cherry blossoms and gingko leaves, were also made into their edible versions. As wagashi artisans completely moved away from imitating Chinese desserts, a strong wagashi culture that was unique to the Japanese people took root. Wagashi transformed again when the Portugese and Spanish arrived in the 16th century. These “Nanban,” or exotic southerners, brought their own desserts to the Asian nation: honey cake, hard candy, and bread, all of which rely heavily on granulated sugar. It was a totally new ingredient to Japan. Until this time, the only sweetness the culture had was extracted from malt rice. The Japanese learned how to produce granulated sugar themselves and began mixing it with red bean paste, a popular pastry filling. Wagashi was forever altered and became more like the one we know today. If you could stop by any of the many wagashi bakeries during the Edo period (1603–1868), you’d find wagashi that were unique to the local culture and current season. In the city of Edo (present-day Tokyo), people appreciated simple designs and non-uniform techniques. The city’s traits shone

through in their wagashi, which were easily accessible for the common people. The Daifuku developed there. It’s a wagashi that’s still popular today, with pillowy-soft skin, sweet, light red-bean paste filling, and a lovely texture that melts on your tongue. Kyoto’s wagashi left a different legacy. The imperial city of the time, Kyoto fostered noble traditions like the tea ceremony. Hosts went to great lengths to prepare and refine the wagashi, hoping to shower guests with hospitality while preserving the tranquil atmosphere. The upper classes of the period gifted each other Jōnamakashi, wagashi that were dedicated to an important person, thus cementing the confection’s cultural significance. Through these traditions, wagashi craftsmanship and its aesthetic expression became ever more impressive—until the beauty of Japan itself could be felt in its diminutive elegance.

With this reverence and humility, the chefs carefully refine the texture and taste of the fillings, then craft one exquisite mosel after another. Whether it be leaves, flowers, animals, or other symbols of the seasons, the chefs can always turn them into their bitesize versions, and allow customers to, perhaps, grasp nature’s fleeting beauty. This is why wagashi is famed as the blooming flower of Japanese food culture. This praise is especially true for the Jōnamakashi, the exceptionally delicate wagashi historically popular among the elites. Not only do these premier wagashi look elegant, smell lovely, and melt on the tip of your tongue, they also invite you to delve into the captivating world of Japanese literature. Each Jōnamakashi variety is unique in its taste and design. To vividly capture this in a few words, their naming often borrows from traditional Japanese waka and haiku poems, linking the Jōnamakashi to a wide set of stories and traditions. The persimmon-shaped Jōnamakashi named First Vow is one example. It takes inspiration from a haiku by the famous 18th-century female poet Fukuda Chiyo-ni:

“Exchanging first vows, Like biting into persimmon, Will it be sweet or bitter?” Exchanging vows refers to marriage. Chiyo-ni expresses her anxious emotions as the new bride: The journey ahead is unpredictable, and whether or not it will be sweet is unknown until she embarks on it. One bite into a First Vow wagashi, and the sweetsour taste slowly develops, as if emulating the uneasiness felt by a new bride. Wagashi names are as savory as the treats themselves. krainian artist Anzhelika Doliba distills the evocative beauty of historic places in her architectural silverpoint drawings. “The atmosphere and the mood of any work are the most important elements for me,” she said. In each drawing, she tries to convey a certain mystery of the place and the feeling of that moment. For as far back as she can remember, Doliba has loved to draw. Her love for architecture arose during her time attending Taras Shevchenko State Art High School, in Kyiv. Part of her art training was to practice the discipline of plein air painting, creating complete works of art on-site in the open air.

Doliba explained that Kyiv’s cityscape is unique and diverse: “The buildings and streets of the Ukrainian capital combine more than 30 different architectural styles, [including] gothic, baroque, Moorish revival, Russian classicism style, and art nouveau. The best European, Russian, and Ukrainian architects and artists worked on the buildings.” Doliba went on to graduate from Kyiv’s National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture in 1994, from the architecture department, where she learned to draft everything in the traditional way, by hand, for which she is immensely grateful. In recent years, she returned to see her old teachers in the Ukraine and learned that since the advent of computer-aided design, many architectural students no longer draw by hand. Although she draws in pencil, pastels, and charcoal, and paints in acrylics and oils, three years ago, the now New Jersey-based artist began to draw in silverpoint. It is now her specialty. Her work is held in private collections in America, Europe, and Egypt (where she lived for more than 16 years).

ABOUT METALPOINT Silverpoint first emerged in medieval Italy, where it became a popular drawing medium, used with magnificent effect by the likes of Leonardo da Vinci. In northern Europe, German artists Albrecht Dürer and Hans Holbein the Elder rendered splendid silverpoint drawings. A metalpoint artist uses a fine metal rod of gold, copper, lead, or silver, shaped to a point at the end in order to draw, leaving a metallic mark that shimmers in response to light. An artist needs to be a skilled draftsman to use metalpoint, as any errors are almost impossible to erase or correct because the metalpoint is used over a previously applied ground, which is a layer of opaque paint that sometimes has added pigment. The ground, in simple terms, allows the metalpoint to make a mark, as drawing without it—with silver, for example, on unprepared paper—doesn’t leave a visible mark. In Renaissance times, bone ash and pigment were ground down and made into a paste with water, which was then mixed with animal glue and applied as a ground to the metalpoint drawing support (a panel or paper, for instance). A self-confessed perfectionist, Doliba loves silverpoint because it allows her to render exquisite

details in her architectural drawings. Silverpoint is a slow medium, she said, and it takes time to render the amount of detail involved in her architectural drawings. For instance, a drawing such as Bethesda Terrace Central Park, NYC takes around four to five weeks to complete, although she doesn’t work on pieces continually, and she doesn’t measure the time each piece takes because it’s such an enjoyable process for her.

GRAYSCALE Doliba drew a lot with pencil before she decided to specialize in silverpoint. Drawing with silverpoint can be similar to drawing with pencil, she said. When you draw with silverpoint, the first marks made are like gray pencil, although they have a metallic shimmer, and the darkest of tones that are easily achieved with pencil cannot be made by silverpoint. Doliba’s daughter, commenting on her mother’s pencil drawings and early silverpoint drawings, once said to her, “Everything you do is gray.” Her early silverpoint drawings certainly were monotone in color, but they were rich in atmosphere. In a traditional atelier, using grays would be the first step in how artists would learn. Masters would make sure their artists could competently render tones and forms in grayscale drawings before they moved on to paint. Doliba’s first silverpoint drawing was of an Ionic capital on Wall Street in New York. Among her early silverpoint endeavors is a drawing of the exterior arches of the New York Public Library. For that drawing, she prepared her own ground. Another stunning example of her early silverpoint work is a radiant portrait of one of her two daughters in the drawing Angelica. Doliba seems to have captured her daughter’s personality wonderfully as she looks out to her mother, full of joy and the confidence of youth.

A TOUCH OF COLOR While the application of silverpoint is precise and controlled, after the drawing is complete, the color of the silverpoint can change over time to brown and sepia tones due to the silver’s oxidizing. Copperpoint also changes color over time, from copper to green. “I like these tones because you can’t get this hue with another medium,” Doliba said. When she initially learned about silverpoint drawing, Doliba looked at how established silverpoint

artists worked and saw that they used casein paint, a paint derived from mixing pigment w ith the milk-protein casein, to add color. Now, Doliba applies casein paint much like light watercolors. The light wash helps her bring color to the drawing while still being able to shade the forms in silverpoint. She paints a casein wash and then draws over the paint with silverpoint to achieve the tonal range. Her silverpoint drawing of Central Park’s Bethesda Terrace is a great example of where the light casein underpainting brings warmth and diffused sunlight to the picture. It’s the type of drawing she loves to do, just for her own pleasure. Doliba gets a lot of requests to make this drawing available as a print because the terrace is a popular place for weddings or for couples to be photographed. The day Doliba

arrived at the terrace it was full of birds. A few of them made it into the picture along with their nests. In another silverpoint piece, Doliba drew the Angel of the Waters, the 8-foot bronze statue in the Bethesda Fountain, which stands in the center of the terrace. The angel represents a Bible story in which a paralytic was healed in the waters at Bethesda. Color features more strongly in the silverpoint drawings Doliba made after a trip to Spain, where she visited Madrid, Barcelona, and Toledo. In her silverpoint drawings of the Cathedral of Saint Mary of Toledo, she painted the frescoes with casein paint directly over the silverpoint, rather than using casein as an underpaint as she normally does. Experimenting with different ideas to get the best possible atmosphere for her silverpoint drawings is high on Doliba’s priorities. On the same trip, she traveled to the mountains overlooking Barcelona and

used a technique similar to the Toledo frescoes. The resulting silverpoint drawing is a Barcelona city view that glows in a delicate blue hue of casein overpaint with a touch of golden light in one of the towers. MASTERING SILVERPOINT Having worked with silverpoint for only a relatively short time, Doliba has come to understand how to competently use the medium and observe how it interacts with the different grounds, paper, and paint. Three years on, she still enjoys the process of preparing for her silverpoint drawings and putting metal to paper. “Every time you do art, you learn something,” she said. Each time she draws, she’s looking and thinking how best to portray what’s in front of her. She asks herself, “How can I draw this?” She observes the different tonal ranges and the color possibilities, and then thinks to herself how she can combine the silver to make the best possible picture. Sometimes, when traveling to a location doesn’t allow enough time to sketch or draw on-site, Doliba takes photographs to devise the composition at home. She then prepares a detailed pencil drawing prior to any silverpoint drawing. “It’s not easy to get what you want from the beginning with silver.” “Every time, I do something new,” she said. Her silverpoint First Light is a good example. Living in New Jersey, Doliba is close to the water. “I really love the

sunrise and how the light comes up,” she said. Having already captured how the sun hits the water in an oil painting, she wanted to see how the picture would work as a silverpoint drawing. The result is an incredibly luminous picture, in which the golden sunlight shimmers on the sea and sand as the frothy sea foam reaches the shore. A LOVE FOR ARCHITECTURAL DRAWING Doliba feels that architectural drawings are her vocation. “Of course, I’m always thinking about drawing figurative art because it’s most popular, but always, every time, I’m still drawn to architectural drawings. For artists like Doliba, whose work is quite niche, this can be a challenge. There aren’t a lot of artists doing her style or type of work; this, she believes, can be problematic for gallery submissions. Galleries want their art exhibitions to reflect or match the idea of what they sell in their gallery, she said. s one of the most celebrated violinists of his generation, David Chan is also a rising star in the world of orchestral conducting. After receiving his bachelor’s degree from Harvard University and his master’s from the Juilliard School, he went on to perform on prestigious stages across North America, Europe, and Asia. He is a concertmaster of New York’s Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, where he’s served for more than 20 years. He is in his fourth year as the music director of the Montclair Orchestra in New Jersey. Despite his accomplishments, Chan maintains a humble heart and a desire to continually grow as a musician. His passion for music has never ceased, even with COVID-19 putting a temporary stop to live performances. “During this pandemic, if you don’t truly love what you do, then it’s hard to find the motivation to keep going,” he said in an interview with Elite Lifestyle Magazine.

Over the years, Chan has performed on prestigious stages across North America, Europe, and Asia. He is currently a concertmaster of New York’s Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, where he’s served for more than 20 years.

a musical background. He describes the way he fell into music as a “happy accident.” A violin teacher visited Chan’s preschool one day and told the parents that learning an instrument could help students improve their math and reading skills. Like most other immigrant parents, Chan’s mother and father would do anything to enhance their child’s studies. So, at 4 years old, Chan’s journey as a violinist began. Though Chan knew from the age of 14 that he wanted to be a musician, his young heart hadn’t always been so certain. In his preteen years, he went through a period where he fought against practicing violin. Like any other kid, he would rather play outside with his friends than run through violin exercises for hours every day. But his parents saw his potential and encouraged him not to quit. Chan had a change of heart the summer of his freshman year of high school after he won the San Diego Youth Symphony Concerto Competition. One

of the judges invited him to go on tour across Eastern Europe, and Chan spent a life-changing three weeks playing among other musicians his age. “I came home from the trip and just knew that I had to do this forever,” Chan said. From that point on, playing the violin went from a hobby to a life goal. Chan’s road to success was not always smooth. “The truth is, like anyone else, I had three times as many things that didn’t work out as things that did,” he explained. “In a way, it could be more interesting to publish a resume of failures.” As a young musician, he was originally set on having a solo career. However, he ran into numerous roadblocks and ended up accepting jobs in various ensembles and chamber orchestras. This proved to be a blessing in disguise, as Chan realized he enjoyed the sense of community he got from working with others. Once he started turning his gaze toward a more ensemble-oriented career, doors began to open a lot faster. When asked what advice he would give to young musicians looking to make it in the industry, Chan emphasized the importance of having patience. It takes time to establish a reputation in the music industry, and many people give up before they succeed. He urges them to keep an open mind. “If you have a goal, don’t be too narrowly focused on it,” he said. “Be open-minded to other opportunities, as they can enhance your journey and open up new avenues.”

EXPANDING HORIZONS It was through keeping an open mind that Chan landed the position of music director of the Montclair Orchestra. Going from a violinist to music director meant he had to adjust his entire mindset during performances. As a violinist, he’s responsible for only his own sound. But as a conductor, instead of being a piece of the puzzle, he is now the one putting the puzzle together. While a player focuses on the present moment, a conductor must always think several steps ahead, preparing his musicians for what’s to come. The Montclair Orchestra is a relatively new organization, so working there comes with a slew of added responsibilities. There are all kinds of behindthe-scenes duties that Chan must take on, many of

which don’t involve music-making. But he enjoys the community-building that comes with being the music director. “A music director needs to be connected to the community and establish a true rapport with the musicians,” Chan said. “To me, the ultimate key is the human connection.” Aside from being a violinist and conductor, Chan is also an entrepreneur and creative director. In 2008, he co-founded the “Musique et Vin au Clos Vougeot” Festival in Burgundy, France. It combines two of his biggest passions: music and wine. His inspiration for the festival came after visiting vineyards in that region of France and finding a kinship between the winemakers and musicians. Though classical music and wine may not seem to have a direct correlation, the two actually have many similarities, Chan says. “With fine wines, there is such a subtle difference between them that only connoisseurs can appreciate it; the feeling isn’t that unlike finding the difference between various late-Schubert piano sonatas,” he said. “We have this platform of two universal languages that can create friendship and bonds between people—and it’s been enormously successful.”

A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE For Chan, one of the best parts of being a musician is the connection formed between the players and the audience during concerts. With the ongoing pandemic, people have come up with innovative ways to enjoy live music. Just a week before his interview with Elite, Chan found himself back in San Diego where he conducted a drive-in concert as part of the Mainly Mozart Festival. In normal times, a seasoned musician like Chan would never consider playing at a drive-in concert in the middle of a parking lot. But with all the chaos in the world right now, he said it was revitalizing to be able to experience a live performance again. Seeing the smiling faces of fellow musicians and feeling the audience’s joy provided a shred of normalcy that he hadn’t felt in quite a while. “I’ll carry this feeling with me for quite a long time,” David said with a broad smile.

In the future, Chan hopes to get more involved in artistic planning and curation of programs like the festival in France or the Mainly Mozart Festival. He’ll still play violin and conduct, but he’s found that his real passion lies in working on the production side of things and creating events through which he can share his love of music with others. “I feel that music is actually one of the languages of God,” Chan said. “Even though people may not realize it, it speaks to them in spaces that words don’t.” He says that classical music has the power to transcend cultural and language barriers, bringing people together in a way words cannot.

Chan is currently in his fourth year as the music director of the Montclair Orchestra in New Jersey. For him, the best part of the job is the community-building that comes with it.

From time to time, she changes the style of her nails to match her outfits. But it wasn’t long before she started wearing gloves. We found out that her long-term use of acrylic nails had caused a bacterial infection, turning the nails of her thumb and index finger into a dark-green color. This is a condition known as paronychia. The more complex the structure of the cosmetic nails, the more likely they are to cause damage to the real nails. So if you wear artificial nails, make sure to remove them regularly and give your nails a rest.

(0.26 ounces), Szechuan Lovage (0.26 ounces), and Chinese peony (0.26 ounces). Add in some dried rose (0.26 ounces), and bring everything to a boil. Then reduce the heat and simmer for 30 minutes. Enjoy! NAIL-CARE TEA This recipe can improve blood circulation, eliminate meridian obstruction, moisturize the skin, and beautify the nails. You’ll need astragalus (0.40 ounces), dried ginger (0.13 ounces), dried longan berries (0.40 ounces), cinnamon sticks (0.26 ounces), and red sage ( 0.13 ounces). After cleaning the ingredients, combine them in 34 ounces of water, bring to a boil, and then turn to low heat and continue to cook for 20 minutes. The ingredients each carry special characteristics: dried ginger and cinnamon stick possess spicy elements, while cinnamon has a special aroma. Astragalus can replenish qi, while red sage can nourish the blood. Use this prescription once or twice a week to moisturize your skin, activate blood circulation, and nurture your nails at the same time. PREVENT PARONYCHIA AND NAIL FUNGUS Have you ever experienced the pain of a nail infection? One time in my youth, I tried to trim my toenails without a nail clipper, ripping my nails left

and right with my bare hands, and I ended up with paronychia. There was a layer of pus under my nails; I could not even place my feet flat on the floor without feeling sharp pain. Just imagine walking! Housewives who prepare food everyday should take special precaution against paronychia. When preparing vegetables, the juice can get under the fingernails. If not cleaned properly, bacteria can reside under the nails, forming a mold that develops into paronychia. If one is infected with the fungus caused by ringworm, it is possible to get "gray nail" (nail fungus). After working with vegetables, wash your hands and fingers well to eliminate the risk of infection, or consider wearing gloves. When manicuring your nails, use good-quality nail clippers. Healthy fingernails that are naturally pink with a shiny surface indicate a well-functioning heart and a proper level of liver detoxification. Unhealthy nails are dull and often show strange vertical or horizontal lines. If you spend some time every day massaging your nails, eat foods that nourish them, or follow the recipes to make a nail-care tea, you’ll soon find yourself with healthier, prettier nails. hen designer Caroline Gidiere renovated three often-used spaces in the home of an entertaining maven and grandmother of 14 young children, she knew beauty had to remain front and center and yet share the stage with practicality and comfort. BEAUTY AND BALANCE Gidiere’s client keeps a busy social calendar that includes large fundraisers at her Mountain Brook home in Alabama. All the while, her grandchildren who are no older than 11 years stop in regularly after school. So the great room’s makeover had a balancing act to perform. Perform it does, thanks to special fabrics and textile sealants throughout the room. Gidiere aimed for a neutral and sophisticated feeling here, beginning with a delightful pair of persimmon-and-white chinoiserie vase lamps. She then layered on patterns, textures, and colors. Sage green provides just the right complementary touch.

IN THE HEART OF THE BEHOLDER Gidiere is a Southern belle who spent summers in Colonial Williamsburg, which is steeped in historical architectural design. She was also greatly influenced by her mother, a seamstress. Gidiere turned away from the business world in order to field a growing number of requests to design homes and wardrobes. The timeless and oh-so-livable arrangements in this Alabama home are the result of Gidiere partly painstaking, partly intuitive artistic process. “I love color and pattern,” Gidiere says. “I start with a lead fabric usually and then branch out from there. How do these colors feel or make me feel? How did they feel when you added in another color? Too much? Not enough? How do the patterns and colors feel at different times of the day? It’s an ongoing

conversation … until I find that the room is speaking in verse and saying something beautiful and moving!” The sumptuous result is apparent even in the microcosm of a kitchen nook where her client spends quiet mornings reading and talking on the phone. A tiny table is just enough. Two sconces glow before the winter sun comes up. And a soft banquette is always cosy. But the matron’s favorite place to escape to is her private den, off-limits to children and guests. The deep teal walls were her idea, which Gidiere loved and ran with, adding a velvet teal sectional. For ambience and comfort, she perfectly placed pillows, a throw, and a small sconce overhead, along with her balanced, yet unpredictable mix of colors and patterns. It’s a designer’s dream room—a tactile experience of luxury and relaxation.

特斯拉(Tesla)用不到一年,其股票價格從 40 多漲到 800 多美元,翻了 20 多倍,市值到了 6 千多億美元, 比兩個日本豐田汽車公司還值錢。但特斯拉公司汽車年 銷售量,不及豐田的十分之一,利潤就更不成比例了,這 一切使好多人不解。也有許多投資者,希望能從中找出 些蛛絲馬跡,尋覓下一個股票價格還沒有開始飛行的「 特 斯拉 」,好發一筆小財,本文就把該公司主要的炒作原 因稍作分析。 ( 一)美國是發達國家中股票炒作最盛行的 其實,發展中國家股票市場的炒作是最離譜的,因為那 裡的股市,沒有什麼真正的投資規律可言。市場的參與 者都是賭徒心態,唯一的追求,是找可炒作的題材,賺 了錢隨時準備跑,所以單個股票炒作的週期,一般都比
