EVERY BRIDE A QUEEN:
Couture Bridal Gowns by Chelsea Liu
English by Megan Wang | Chinese by Ann Lin

n New York City, a bespoke wedding dress designer is overseeing the final pearls being handstitched onto a gown fit for royalty. Chelsea Liu established her couture label in 2014 and has been making dreams come true for brides around the world with her legendary, detail-filled creations. Among the thank-you letters and photos sent to Liu by her clients, many are beyond grateful: “I would say the most common thread in all the letters is that they ‘looked and felt like a star’ on their wedding day,” says Liz Sellassie, the owner of Designer Loft Bridal in New York City. “[Liu’s] gowns are for the bride that wants an interesting, unique gown with a very feminine but also very powerful charm. Her gowns, even the most demure ones, say ‘I am a queen on this day.’ “ Indeed, Liu’s gowns seem to possess the magic to transform each bride into the most confident and beautiful version of herself, leaving a truly unforgettable mark on her big day.

Designer Chelsea Liu believes every woman deserves to feel as beautiful and special as a princess.

Liu adheres to the traditional methods of hand-sketching the design and hand-stitching her gowns, giving each gown the human touch as if personally wishing the bride a happy future. (Benny Zhang)
TURNING REGRETS INTO BLESSINGS Born and raised in Chang Chun, China, Liu studied film in South Korea in her undergraduate years. Fatefully, “it was the first step toward my fashion design career,” Liu remarks. As an international student, finding an internship befitting her major was not easy. The next stroke of destiny came when Liu started working in a modeling agency as an interpreter for the foreign models. Through this brush with the fashion industry, she uncovered her hidden passion for fashion design.

In her youth, Liu placed sole focus on academics and paid little attention to dressing to look pretty like the other girls her age. Recalling those days, she wished she had partaken in the festive school events where girls were transformed into “little princesses” in stunning sparkly gowns. To make up for this regret, Liu started designing children’s clothing. Her natural artistic talent became apparent, and the skills she honed while sketching storyboards for films came in especially handy. Liu achieved early success designing children’s apparel, which soon

led to a passion for wedding gowns. She had begun designing as a remedy for her childhood regrets, but now she was designing to send blessings to others. This was the start of her lifelong aspiration. As one bride after another began entering the gates of matrimony in her glamorous custom-made gowns, Liu was forced to take an exit from her own marriage. In 2018, she found herself reeling from the loss of a small fortune after one of her collections fell f lat. She felt completely lost, ambivalent about whether to follow the market trends or adhere to her own design principles. Just then, her husband decided to file for a divorce. Liu found herself with a frozen credit card and $14 in her hand, while her 18-month-old son waited to be fed. Refusing to be trapped at rock bottom, Liu invited the head of Designer Loft Bridal, one of New York City’s most popular bridal shops, to take a look at her prized collection of dress samples.
SERENDIPITY During her darkest hour, meeting Sellassie of Designer Loft Bridal was like a beam of light suddenly shining onto Liu’s life. Her persistence in her dream and her designs were finally paying off. Sellassie still vividly recalls how amazed she was when she saw Liu’s designs: “We had not seen such intricate, stunning ball gowns.” Liu’s dresses now take pride of place in front of other labels in Designer Loft Bridal. Liu’s design philosophy is unique and reflects her personality. “I am quite afraid of change,” she says. So she sticks to the same clothing brands, same city, and even the same phone year after year. In the world of ever-renewing technology in the name of comfort and convenience, reading can be done with the mere swipe of a finger. But Liu continues to read physical copies, be they newspapers or books. The texture and temperature of each page has no substitute, she feels. Liu lives and adores a rather old-fashioned lifestyle, and disregards the social pressure to adapt to new technologies. This is part of what leads her to design timelessly spectacular gowns.

Luxurious, semi-sheer wedding dresses encrusted with pearls or crystals, a popular style in the 1920s, are trending again today. After the Spanish flu ravaged the world in 1918, people sought the ultimate in beauty and luxury to erase dark memories of the pandemic. Today, after a year of living with fear and restrictions due to the COVID virus, people yearn to have their spirits lifted. A wedding dress that features such details and fine tailoring turns the bride into a paragon of beauty and hope.

Though she once considered letting the market trends dictate her designs, Liu has become confident in her vision of grand, classy dresses. She realizes the only way to be remembered is to adhere to her personal design principles and not waver in the face of changing trends. “I hope that when people think of a magnificent wedding, ‘Chelsea Liu’ is the first designer that comes to mind,” Liu says. Through her years in the industry, she understands that fashion trends come and go, yet traditions revered as classics remain standing. In stark contrast with the light, simple-looking wedding dresses in vogue today, Liu’s layered ball gowns are majestic. They draw the attention of entire crowds. Entirely hand-stitched, the gowns boast exceptionally exquisite beadwork on the bodice and embroidery that extends through the skirt and down the train. They accentuate the elegance and grace of

I think wedding dresses are sacred."
each bride to the utmost extent. Timelessly beautiful, Chelsea Liu’s gowns have stood out in the wedding gown market and have attracted a loyal fan base.
AGELESS BEAUTY, ETERNAL BLESSINGS Today, Liu is the go-to designer for Jewish brides all over New York. Jewish bridal gowns are among the most challenging, as the dress must cover much of the skin. With much more fabric, the design details must be more meticulous than average wedding gowns. Liu hand-sketches each detail, pouring her all into every fine part of the dress in the most traditional way. "Every stitch in the wedding dress has to bear the temperature of a worker's finger to be able to deliver the best prayer," Liu says. Because she insists on hand-stitching every gown, Liu does not compromise a single detail. Together with her team of more than 10 people, they pour over 300 hours into each gown, truly holding every nuance to the highest standard of fashion craftsmanship in order to deliver the most sincere blessings to the newlyweds. Liu shared her insight into the symbol of the wedding dress in light of her personal encounter with marriage: "I think wedding dresses are sacred." No matter the ups and downs of marriage, the wedding day is always good. The moment you walk down the aisle in a wedding dress is truly unforgettable, whether or not you are able to spend a lifetime with the person. Each wedding dress is profound—a lifelong promise and a symbol of a new stage of life. Liu knows this well and always tries her best to fulfill the bride's longing, to make her the most beautiful fairytale heroine on that day. Just like Liu’s favorite romantic movie, the characters’ romance breaks through all struggles and comes true. Though Liu is no longer in the film industry, she is still a storyteller. She uses elements like tulle, satin, and lace to embody the love of couples and tells of their happiness with every impeccable detail.

Lucky groom, your gift to your bride should bring with it the sense of a promise and blessings. In Western culture, if the bride carries something blue down the aisle (along with something old, something new, and something borrowed), happiness will follow her always. In Chinese feng shui, diamonds and pearls ensure good fortune and a happy family.

GET YOUR
English by Pia-Maria Norris Translated by Kelly Gao

leep is essential for our body and mind. But did you know that a lack of sleep for prolonged periods can have a detrimental effect not only on the body and mind, but also the face and skin? While we sleep, the skin rejuvenates and replenishes itself. Throughout the night, the body and skin are hard at work, building new, healthy cells to replace older or damaged ones. It’s a time of intense repair and regeneration. SLEEP DEPRIVATION’S EFFECTS ON THE SKIN Sleep deprivation ages the skin. A lack of sleep causes the skin to fatigue and makes it harder for new skin cells to grow. Over time, it can make your skin and face look dull and aged. When you don't get enough sleep, your cortisol levels soar and your skin collagen deteriorates, which causes poor skin elasticity. That in turn means more wrinkles and saggy skin. Too little sleep can also cause dark, puffy circles, the classic giveaway of not getting enough sleep.

In a 2015 study, researchers examined a group of 30 women. The women first received a solid night’s sleep of eight hours, after which the researchers counted and documented their wrinkles, pores, red blemishes, and brown spots. Then the same women slept six hours per night for five consecutive nights, after which the researchers again counted and documented the signs of skin aging. After the five nights of poor sleep, the women showed twice the number of wrinkles and dark circles under the eyes, and 75 percent more brown spots.

HOW ENOUGH SLEEP HELPS YOUR SKIN When you get enough sleep, you not only neutralize those negative effects, but you also give your body the tools it needs to look your best. While we sleep, the body releases HGH (human growth hormone). HGH is essential for stimulating the production of collagen, which is the protein that helps your skin stay supple, elastic, and wrinkle-free. Your skin is not the only thing that benefits from a healthy supply of collagen, which is essential for keeping your hair and nails strong and less prone to breakage, brittleness, or cracking. Sleep is also what the skin needs to build new cells—so when you get enough sleep, your skin gets plumper and smoother, and the complexion looks clearer and more luminous.

According to experts, adults should try to get seven to nine hours of sleep per night, which is the time the body and skin need to do the critical repair work required to look youthful and fresh. Quality is as important as quantity, so minimize caffeine intake before bedtime, minimize distractions, and block out light, all of which can result in a night of fragmented sleep. So, there is a lot of wisdom behind the saying “get your beauty sleep.” Make sure to get enough sleep, and you will wake up ready to face the day looking rested, youthful, and fresh.

THE MANY MEANINGS OF MARRIAGE: CENTURIES-OLD WISDOM English by Angela Feng | Chinese by Ann Lin
S
o that they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. —Matthew 19:6 Since Biblical times, we’ve been searching for our other halves, wanting to ride into the sunset with our one true love, and marrying the love of our life. But marriage traditions through the ages have ranged from joyous to somber. Some ancient wedding traditions emphasized the challenges that awaited newlyweds and the loss of moving away from their families. If one word could capture the universal ideal of marriage success, it’s probably “harmony,” beginning with the story of our first ancestors. And the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.” —Genesis 2:18. According to the Hebrew Bible, all of humankind descended from Adam and Eve. God felt that Adam needed a partner and created Eve by taking her from Adam’s rib. Thus, the first couple in the world was formed. Eve was born to nurture and accompany Adam, and in exchange, Adam vowed to protect and provide for her. They were two sides of the same coin— born of the same body, and through God’s blessed union, once again brought together as one in order to be fruitful.
Right page: There are three versions of the “Up the River During Qingming” handscroll painting, made in the Qing, Song, and Ming dynasties, respectively. In ancient China, it was customary for men to present their bride with a pair of geese as a gift. Later on, the tradition was replaced with wooden duck carvings. (Courtesy of the National Palace Museum)
THE TRUE MEANING OF MARRIAGE In ancient China, it was said that unmarried men and women were incomplete. Only after they found their other half and were wedded were they considered whole. According to the Yili Zhushu, a text from the pre-Han Dynasty, “father and son, man and wife, [and] brothers are one body as well.” This passage illustrates the importance that was placed on marriage in ancient China. While brothers and fathers and sons are bonded by blood, husbands and wives are connected only by love and loyalty.

In The Book of Rites, Confucius says, “From the distinction between man and woman came the righteousness between husband and wife." Similar to Biblical beliefs, people in ancient China thought that men and women had different responsibilities. The husband was expected to provide for his wife and family, while the wife was supposed to take care of household duties. This exchange of responsibilities resulted in a mutual understanding and respect, which the ancients referred to as “righteousness.” Marriage was an important foundation of society in ancient China, and often played an important role in clan organization and politics. But the main purpose of marriage was to raise children to become upstanding members of society and pass down each family’s heritage. As The Book of Rites says, ”The ceremony of marriage was intended to be a bond of love between two [families of different] surnames, with a view, in its retrospective character, to secure the services in the ancestral temple, and in its prospective character, to secure the continuance of the family line.” ANCIENT RITUALS Due to the sacred nature of the marriage bond in ancient China, there were strict rules of etiquette surrounding it. For a marriage to be considered valid, it must be approved by the couple’s parents. A marriage wasn’t only a union between the couple—it was a union between their two families. In fact, the parents often acted as matchmakers. Arranged marriages were very common. The courting process began with a matchmaker introducing the two people. It was considered improper for unmarried men and women to become closely acquainted with each other outside of formal matchmaking procedures. Once a match was made, the family needed to report news of the marriage to the monarch. A feast was then organized, and the entire village came together to celebrate the union of the new couple. The official proposal process involved the “six rites,” which originated in classical times. Since the Western Zhou Dynasty, it was mainly practiced among the elite. But in the Tang Dynasty, it spread widely among the common people. In order for a couple to be considered properly married, the rites had to be performed in order.
A newly wedded couple pays their respects in the wedding chapel. The three-step procedure involves first paying respect to the heavens, then to the groom’s parents, and finally to one another, sealing their status as husband and wife. (Public domain)

The first step was for the man to propose with an accompanying gift. If the lady’s family chose to accept the proposal, they could proceed to the second rite, which was “inquiring into the lady’s name and birthday.” This was done to make sure the couple didn’t have any blood relatives. Third was “the intimation of the approving divination,” which ensured that the union would be a balanced match. The fourth rite involved the husband making offerings to the lady’s family, and the fifth was inquiring about the date of the wedding. Finally, the six rites conclude with the groom and bride meeting in person.

affairs. As The Book of Rites recounts, "At the marriage ceremony, they did not employ music, having reference to the feeling of solitariness and darkness [natural to the separation from parents]. … There was no congratulation on marriage; it indicates how [one generation of] men succeeds to another." This sentiment was present in the bleak wedding ceremonies of the Western Zhou Dynasty, which had no music, words of congratulation, food, or drinks. After the wedding ceremony, the bride’s family wasn’t allowed to light candles for three nights, so as to show their sadness over their daughter’s parting. At the groom’s home, music, singing, and dancing was banned for three days to demonstrate that he was a serious man who could handle the responsibility of raising a family. There were also many traditions that took place during the couple’s first night under the same roof. To symbolize the start of their new life as husband and wife, the two drank together from a calabash, or gourd. The gourd was broken into two pieces, and each half was filled with wine. A string was used to tie the two halves together, conveying that though the couple used to be apart, fate had brought them together. The gourd and wine typically have a bitter taste, which signified future hardships the couple would face. A common tradition throughout China was for the husband and wife to each cut off a lock of hair and tie them together to symbolize unity and an eternal bond. While the marriage process has changed drastically over the centuries, a person’s wedding day remains one of life’s most important moments. Now that the world has placed so much emphasis on the individual and has splintered into thousands of subcultures, finding two people who both agree on the meaning and function of marriage is becoming rare. But the hope remains universal that, God willing, each of us will find our one perfect match and walk arm in arm for the rest of our lives.

o one wants an unlucky symbol accidentally marring her wedding day—or her future happiness. But some might not realize just how ancient and intricate the language of flowers is. Some otherwise beautiful flowers were bad omens to our ancestors. Yellow tulips mean one-sided or unrequited love to the Japanese, and yellow roses signified platonic friendship, not romantic love, to Europeans and Americans in the 1800s. Sweet peas might look like a cute option for someone’s big day, but they signify good-bye. Red spider lilies say “abandonment, never to meet again.” But don’t worry, hundreds of beautiful blooms are waiting to bring romance and special promises to couples— just not French marigolds, which symbolize jealousy.
FRAGRANT MESSAGES What else would the Victorians say about today’s bouquets and blooms? A lot. But they would likely argue over the exact meanings. That’s because the language of f lowers, floriography, was so popular in the West from 1820 until about 1900 that flower dictionaries multiplied. Each European country practically had its own renowned pioneer. The strict taboos in Victorian culture prevented people from directly expressing many thoughts and feelings, especially romantic ones. That made the wordless way of communicating through blossoms so appealing. So as long as the interlocutors agreed on a common source, a conversation in flowers could go something like this:

The gentleman presents a red rose: "I love you." The lady admits a partial reciprocation of the sentiment by returning a purple pansy: "You occupy my thoughts." The gentleman presses his suit still further with an everlasting pea: "Wilt thou go with me?" The lady replies by a daisy, in which she says: "I will think of it." The gentleman, in his enthusiasm, plucks and presents a shepherd's purse: "I offer you my all." The lady, doubtingly, returns a sprig of

—from Hill’s Manual (Chicago, 1888) The color of a flower can change its meaning yet again. A stark example is the way white is regarded in the East versus the West. In China, white is the color of death. In the East, red, pink, and others are colors of celebration and good fortune. In the West, however, white signifies innocence and purity and is looked at with positivity and awe. It’s the color that dominates weddings and bridal bouquets in modern times. If you’re seeking a wedding that appeals to both Eastern and Western sensibilities, look to traditional European cultures like Slavic wedding traditions and even early Victorians. You’ll find very different color combinations in bridal bouquets and dresses compared to those in modern wedding catalogues.
SOWING THEIR WILD OATS Floriography owes a lot to the court of Constantinople in Ottoman Turkey, according to experts at the U.K.’s Walled Gardens of Cannington. In the early 1700s, the rulers of Constantinople sparked a society-wide obsession with tulips that coincided with a peaceful period and a growing affinity with European ways. It’s now known as the Tulip Age. It’s widely held that the concept of flower languages appeared in Western Europe around 1720. But the first known dictionary of f lower meanings is a French one published in 1819: Le Langage des Fleurs by Louise Cortambert. When that book became a hit, flower dictionaries proliferated across Europe and North America. The golden age for the language of f lowers had begun. One tome has stood the test of time, and that’s Routledge's The Language of Flowers, sweetly illustrated by Kate Greenaway. It was first published in 1884 and continues to be reprinted to this day.

Before the Turks and Victorians brought the language of f lowers to new heights, Shakespeare had something to say on the topic. In Hamlet, written around the year 1600, grief-stricken Ophelia famously lists a handful of f lowers and their meanings: “There's rosemary, that's for remembrance; pray, love, remember; and there is pansies, that's for thoughts.”

Perhaps before anyone, the Chinese began cultivating deep meanings for their blossoms throughout their culture’s 5,000 year history. Famous f lowers add rich layers of meaning to Chinese paintings, ceramics, and poetry. Peonies are known in China

Some believe Queen Victoria was the first in history to carry a posy of flowers down the aisle. Orange blossoms decorated her hair and dress, seen here, to signify eternal love, fruitfulness, and innocence. She carried a bouquet of snowdrops, which mean hope, and were her groom Prince Albert’s favorite flower. as the king of flowers and traditionally symbolized the imperial family. They’re also a sign of deep love. Chrysanthemums signify longevity and wealth. Their name sounds similar to the Chinese word for “long enduring.” But they’re also closely associated with mourning and are often given at funerals.
Lotus flowers are seen as deeply spiritual, representing Buddhism, enlightenment, and purity. The words for “lotus” and “harmony” are homophones in Chinese. The positive connotations around orchids are positively overflowing: love and beauty, married couples, wealth and fortune. Orchids in a vase mean “unity.”

UNIQUE WEDDING CAKES BAKED WITH LOVE Emily Lael Aumiller, Pastry Chef English by Angela Feng | Chinese by Cora Wang

here are few days that are more sentimental than your wedding day. Being surrounded by friends and family as you make a commitment to the love of your life is truly a magical experience. Many elements go into making the big day perfect, and that includes the wedding cake. Lael Cakes, founded in 2011 by Emily Lael Aumiller, is a Brooklyn-based boutique cake studio that specializes in alternative ingredients. Aumiller creates stunning cakes using a unique blend of gluten-free flours that are healthy without sacrificing taste. Every one of her cakes is crafted with love and care, ensuring that it perfectly captures the happy couple’s love story. FINDING HER TRUE PATH Growing up in a household where food was a love language, Aumiller developed a passion for being in the kitchen from a young age. “My mom really valued eating meals together as a way to bond with the family at the end of the day,” she explained. “We were always creating food to spend time with one another.” One of her fondest childhood memories was baking with her great grandmother. Aumiller reminisces about the afternoons spent helping her great grandma make her famous molasses-filled sugar cookies. Though Aumiller’s upbringing gave her a great love for food and baking, being a pastry chef hadn’t always

been her path. In high school, she discovered ceramics, and was enthralled by the idea of creating a piece of art completely from scratch. She went on to study fine arts in college. However, she found herself drawn to the food industry, and eventually transferred to the New England Culinary Institute in Vermont. There, she came across sugar sculpting. “I fell in love with all of the things I had done with ceramics, but this time I was working with edible materials,” Aumiller said. Sugar sculpture is the art of creating elaborate designs out of sugar or sugar derivatives. In the cake industry, it is used to add ornate details and construct beautiful centerpieces. It is similar to fondant, but dries completely brittle so that it better holds its shape. One characteristic of edible art that intrigues Aumiller is the transiency of it. While she enjoyed studying ceramics, she found that all the projects and materials would just accumulate over time. But when it comes to baking, the final product is often gone in seconds. She appreciates that fast pace and lack of waste.
Just as Aumiller uses natural, organic ingredients, many of her designs draw inspiration from nature as well, with flowers, fruits, and foliage being common motifs in her cakes. (CLY BY MATTHEW)

OVERCOMING BARRIERS Upon graduating, Aumiller moved to New York City to jump-start her career. Going from the farmland and countryside of Vermont to the biggest city in America was a huge transition. However, Aumiller was glad she made the move, as otherwise she would never have received all the opportunities that came her way. “It made me the well-rounded baker and chef I am today. I look back on those experiences and I’m really grateful,” Aumiller said. Prior to opening Lael Cakes, Aumiller took on a medley of different jobs, from small boutique bakeries to large chain stores. For a period of time she was mentored by world-renowned cake artist Sylvia Weinstock, whose clientele includes Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Lopez, and members of the Kennedy family. Under Weinstock’s wing, Aumiller was able to further hone her sugar-sculpting skills. She also freelanced for a variety of businesses, which included taking on complex, specialty sugar-sculpting jobs. Aumiller was inspired to open Lael Cakes after years of battling food allergies. The issue first developed back when she was in culinary school. It was difficult to pinpoint the cause, and she was misdiagnosed many times. Eventually, she realized her allergies were caused by the ingredients she worked with—the wheat, sugar, dairy, and artificial dyes. It was devastating at first to learn that the thing she loved doing most was making her sick. But Aumiller refused to give up her passion, and instead turned it into an opportunity. “I wanted to open Lael Cakes not only for my own health, but also to help others who are struggling with the same thing,” she said. Lael Cakes prides itself on its attention to clean, organic ingredients. Instead of artificial dyes, they use natural dyes made from fruits and vegetables. Eggs are often replaced by flaxseed pastes, and butter and milk are replaced by vegan products. “We try to focus on ingredients just as much as the design, and work with local suppliers and vendors that align with our principles,” Aumiller said. The dedication to natural ingredients extends to many of her designs as well. Aumiller draws a lot of inspiration from nature, with flowers, fruits, and foliage being common motifs in her cakes. CREATING THE PERFECT CAKE Lael Cakes receives orders for all kinds of occasions— anniversaries, birthdays, and corporate events. How-

ever, weddings are extra special, as they occur only once in a person’s lifetime. With all the planning that goes into one’s wedding day, there is a lot of pressure to make sure it’s perfect. Clients often reach out to Aumiller a year—or even two years—in advance, depending on the size of the wedding. They come into the shop to sample different flavors and usually choose two of their favorites. Aumiller recommends picking one on the lighter side and another that is more decadent, to ensure that guests with different taste buds are satisfied. She then proceeds to make a sketch of the cake design. Designing a wedding cake is a collaborative process between the artist and the client. “One of my favorite parts about catering is the connection between the people that I meet,” Aumiller said. It is important to her that she is able to communicate elements of her client’s personality through her designs. In recent years, Aumiller has noticed that ornate fondant wedding cakes have gone out of favor, and relaxed, rustic designs are more popular. She has received a lot more orders for semi-naked cakes that are lightly frosted and have some texture peeking through. “A lot of times these days people are really looking for the ingredients to shine, and that’s something we specialize in,” Aumiller said. With the pandemic, many people have opted to have intimate ceremonies of just 15 to 20 people that include only immediate family and close friends. Aumiller can see smaller weddings becoming a trend even after the pandemic ends, as some may decide to ditch the extravagances and share their wedding day with only their inner circle. To adapt, Lael Cakes has been working on developing smaller, two-tiered cakes that are less elaborate but just as special. Though Lael Cakes has grown a lot in the past decade, it’s important to Aumiller that her business remains relatively small and sustainable. While catering is her passion, she wants to make sure that she has time for other interests, such as teaching, writing, and volunteering in her community. In 2016 she published her first cookbook, Pure Artistry: Extraordinary Vegan and Gluten-Free Cakes, which has been a dream of hers to write since culinary school. No matter where the future leads her, Aumiller’s goal is to continue doing what she loves and spreading joy to others through her work.

tends to perform poorly. If the issue is neglected for too long, early-onset dementia could be only a step away. In this article, we’ll show you how to help keep your brain “young” with acupoint massage, simple recipes, and a daily 15-minute habit to enhance your memory.

FOUR ACUPOINTS FOR CLEAR MEMORY On the top of the head, there is a Baihui (One Hundred Meetings) acupoint. It is located at the intersection where a line between the tips of the two ears meet. The Sishencong acupoints are located one inch from the Baihui acupoint in all four directions. Gently tapping these acupoints with your hand or a comb (a wooden or horn comb) can enhance your memory. According to traditional Chinese medicine studies, there are 12 standard meridians in the human body, and each corresponds with an organ. The meridian of the heart goes through the arm. Its path traces from the inner corner of the pinky through the arm. Along that path, at its intersection with the wrist line, you’ll find the Shenmen (Spirit Gate) acupoint, another acupoint capable of strengthening your memory. As its name suggests, the Spirit Gate acupoint is crucial for maintaining a clear consciousness. Massaging it often can invigorate the mind and bring about better rest. It restores energy the brain can use to process information, which in turn enhances memory. The Zusanli (Leg Three Miles) acupoint under the knee of either leg also helps with memory. To find it, place four fingers horizontally below the lower end of the kneecap. The Zusanli point is closely associated with stomach metabolism, and massaging it can promote a more efficient transfer of the needed nutrients to the brain. This is one way memory can become stronger.

A 15-MINUTE DAILY HABIT TO CLEAR YOUR MIND The outside information we take in, our input, needs to be processed before we can turn it into valuable output. The massages mentioned above can help with this processing. Brain-clearing exercises are great too. As the brain enters a relaxed, serene state, it’s able to sort through the input more effectively. That’s why moderate exercises (like biking) for 15 to 20 minutes a day can optimize brain operation and help reduce the chance of early memory loss. Soon you’ll find that as your mind becomes clearer, you also work better and more efficiently. Meditation is a great way to clear the mind. It lets your brain "tidy up" the information you took in earlier. Listening to slow-paced music has this effect too. Try the one-beat-per-second kind. It calms your spirits and allows you to concentrate better, thus elevating your productivity. When enjoying unhurried music, my heart rate slows down, as does my breathing, and I feel calmer. When the pressure is alleviated, the hippocampus in the brain is able to relax and absorb like a sponge, the optimal state for learning new information.

spleen-stomach system; jujube and glutinous rice help to fill and balance the stomach-spleen. Wisdom-Enhancing Decoction
Ingredients: Walnut pieces Poria cocos Spine date seed Longan pulp Tremella mushroom
0.2 oz. 0.2 oz. 0.18 oz. 0.14 oz. 0.18 oz.
Recipe: Soak the dry tremella mushroom in water for 30 minutes to an hour. Drain the water. Then tear the mushrooms into smaller pieces and cook thoroughly by boiling them in a quart of water for about 15 minutes. They should turn from white to translucent. Add the rest of the ingredients to the water. When it boils, turn down the heat and cook for 30 minutes. Next take out the spine date seed. Lastly, add the crystal sugar. Let the mixture cool before serving. According to an old Chinese saying, you can heal a body part by eating a food that looks similar. Since the walnut is shaped like a brain, it functions to nourish that organ. Poria cocos grows on the roots of pine or cedar trees. A type of fungi, poria cocos clears one’s mind and improves sleep. Likewise, the spine date seed is a tonic for insomnia. The longan pulp improves brain function and prevents memory loss. The decoction is completed with sliced tremella mushroom, which will give it a delightfully thick texture. OTHER FOODS THAT STRENGTHEN MEMORY Pumpkin is rich in beta-carotene and antioxidants. Pumpkin also contains selenium, the element associated with vision development. Compared to humans, eagles have especially high amounts of selenium in their eyes, which gives them amazingly sharp eyesight. Adding selenium-rich foods to the diet can improve vision. Strawberry is another memory-boosting food. It has an abundance of anthocyanins, a chemical that prevents brain aging. However, due to strawberry’s susceptibility to disease and pests, it’s crucial to pay special attention to pesticide residue. If possible, buy

organic strawberries, and always be sure to clean them well before eating. Eggs, a very accessible food, are among the most brain-strengthening ones. Though people warn that the yolk contains cholesterol, they often overlook the fact that eggs also contain lecithin, which not only helps to lower cholesterol levels, but also works to clean out the blood vessels. One of the major components of lecithin, choline, helps to form the chief neurotransmitter acetylcholine (ACh). ACh is involved in many important functions, including learning and memory formation. If one’s ACh level is too low, the brain can’t function properly, and problems like memory loss can appear. Simply put, eating eggs can prevent diseases associated with memory loss, and even help reduce the chance of dementia.
Please note: The ingredients mentioned in the dishes must be applied proportionately. Some ingredients might have different effects on people with various physical conditions. Please consult a medical or TCM professional. │51

tunning views of vineyards and mountains surround this idyllic wine-country retreat in Napa County, California. Luxurious yet down-to-earth, the place is the perfect escape from the bustle of the city. Designed by Bay Area-based Andrew Mann Architecture with interior designs by Chicago-based Kara Mann, the house is a contemporary take on the traditional country home. For more than 20 years, the firm has specialized in putting a modern spin on the traditional Bay Area style, with crisp lines and simple details.
A CLEAR VISION This particular home and its location carries sentimental value for the client. Originally from Chicago, Illinois, she frequently visited Napa Valley with her late husband. She had rented the home for three summers before finally getting the opportunity to purchase it. Already well-acquainted with the space, the new owner knew exactly what changes she wanted to make. She developed an idea book for the design team that captured the essence of what she was looking for: a splendid indoor-outdoor experience with a refined palette.

“I have never worked on a project where the vision was so clear,” said Andrew Mann in an exclusive interview with Elite. “The client was a great decisionmaker, consistent about client meetings and giving the right amount of feedback, never too much or too little.” The original property was a shingle-style home built in the late 1980s or early 1990s with heavy detailing. Despite being situated among the rolling hills of Napa Valley, it was closed off and didn’t take advantage of the beautiful view. To open up the space, the designers simplified the f loor plan and used French doors to connect the interior with the elegant private garden. The exterior materials and interior finishes are rich in texture, complementing the simple white-and-grey color palette.

The house came with three bedrooms and three bathrooms, but the designers decided to combine two of the beds and baths to create a grand, spacious master suite. Made up of various shades of white and cream, the bedroom has a fresh, relaxing feel. Large glass doors make up one wall, offering plenty of natural light and views of the stunning surroundings. In the bathroom en suite, the freestanding tub from Agape sits against a feature wall made of limestone sourced from Artistic Tile. The limestone is once again utilized in the kitchen, where it makes an appearance in the backsplash. The smooth white countertops are a quartz composite from Caesarstone in the color Blizzard. Above the kitchen island are customized pendant lights sourced from The Urban Electric Co.

Woven bar stools give the otherwise pristine, modern kitchen a more rustic feel. In the living room, a coffee table consisting of four separate stone slabs is a striking and unique centerpiece. Flanking the table are two beige settees, enhanced by the sleek, brown leather throw pillows. A focal wall featuring V-Groove wooden boards surrounds the Borneo limestone fireplace. Above the mantel, a burnt-golden mirror frame adds a bohemian touch. TRANQUIL MOUNTAINSIDE LIVING Both Mann and the client’s favorite design feature is the pavilion, which was created in collaboration with Scott Lewis Landscape Architecture. From the start, the client knew she wanted some sort of outdoor seating area that feels nestled in the landscape. The pavilion is oriented to ensure that it captures views of the mountains in the west and the prevailing Napa Valley w inds. A light color scheme and sweeping white curtains
give it a lavish, resort-like experience, making it the perfect place to host wine tastings. Throughout the home, minimalist furniture and neutral tones create a relaxed, welcoming ambiance. The elegant light fixtures and architectural hardware act almost like jewelry, adding eye-catching highlights to every room. The resulting creation is a traditional countryside retreat with a contemporary twist.

LUMINANCE ARTS: Reviving Traditional Art Forms to Enrich the Soul
ADVERTORIAL
uminance Arts is a meeting place for traditional artists and fans of their artwork. The New York-based organization was established in the summer of 2018 to provide giclée art prints in a variety of traditional artistic styles and to fill a gap in the art market. Outside the world of hastily manufactured art and culture, there are artists who hold fast to timeless methods, according to Sophia Li, the founder of Luminance Arts. She says that artists affiliated with Luminance Arts pour their hearts into their painting or calligraphy. Their dedication to their art moved her, and the mission statement reads: “to help artists find people who admire their work” and “to help traditional art lovers discover artists they may be fond of.” The company’s mission is ever-more salient given that current mainstream art trends provide little space to these art forms. Participating artists say they are moved by the company’s vision. That includes artists such as Zuimeng Cao, who is famous for his Chinese ice and snow painting, and the well-known calligraphy master Xitong Liu. All the artists cultivate their character, so the essence, energy, and spirit of each stroke brings a positive message to the viewer’s soul. Li says she’ll never forget when a traditional Chinese medicine doctor in Manhattan bought some paintings from Luminance Arts and placed them in her clinic. The doctor was surprised to see that the environment became quieter than ever before. She said people grew calm when they saw the paintings. Li says that’s the magic of a great piece of traditional art. “Beauty is instinctual,” Li says. She believes beautiful works of art like the ones she represents can fill an onlooker’s heart without a word. Luminance Arts shares the pure beauty of visual arts in hopes of bringing these exquisite aesthetics into people’s daily lives. 64│
