序 EDITOR’S NOTE
In the busy metropolis of New York, 26-year-old Katie G. Whipple prefers slowness. Like an ancient Greek artisan, she paints just one flower a day, devoutly applying each fine stroke, and treating every detail of a f lower petal as one would a character’s complexion in a portrait. Ethnic Chinese dancer Golden Li, also 26 years old, emphasizes focus. Every day, regardless of pain, sweat, and toil, he has never stopped practicing, calmly contemplating the essence, feeling, and spirit of every dance movement. This issue features exclusive interviews with people who each have a moving, poetic quality—a dedication to creating and spreading beauty. In the face of ostentation and temptation, they hold a remarkable intrinsic resistance. They face life with a steadfast, clear-headed attitude—devoting time only to what is right. In this complex utilitarian world, their detachment and purity is a graceful force. If your soul yearns for poetry, why not immerse yourself in some beauty? For yourself, and for others, seek beauty continuously your whole life.

TREASURE for the
EYES By Pia-Maria Norris

ccording to ancient Korean herbal medicine, the body undergoes significant internal changes every seven years. At age 35, vital energies start to diminish and fall out of balance, making the skin more vulnerable to the aging process. The delicate skin around the eyes is especially vulnerable and tends to be the first to show signs of aging. Blending native medicinal herbs through traditional Korean methods, the holistic beauty brand Sulwhasoo has just launched an exciting addition to its anti-aging Timetreasure collection with the anti-aging and brightening Timetreasure Renovating Eye Serum, presenting a comprehensive solution to strengthening the skin around the eyes. Infused with the precious Korean red pine, a symbol of longevity and youth because of its durable wood that thrives even under the harshest conditions and stays intact for thousands of years, the serum adds firmness and youthful radiance while targeting fine lines, dullness, and sagging skin around the eyes. Sulwhasoo’s unique capsulation technology enhances the delivery of active ingredients, allowing the vitality of the red pine to quickly reach the deeper layers of skin. Leaving behind a refreshing, nonsticky feeling, the weightless serum becomes even more efficient when layered with Sulwhasoo’s Timetreasure Renovating Eye Cream EX.

SKIN TONERS The FORGOTTEN Step By Pia-Maria Norris
T
oners are today one of the most neglected steps of our facial skin care regimens, yet they play a significant role in ensuring the overall health of the skin due to the remarkable benefits they provide. Toners were originally devised as an extra cleansing step to remove residual makeup and impurities, and to restore the skin’s pH balance. Our skin is naturally acidic, but due to the alkaline nature of most cleansers and soaps, the pH balance of the skin gets disturbed. This makes the skin work overtime to restore the proper balance, which, in turn, can result in sensitivity, inflammation, oily skin, and acne. Using a toner helps restore the pH balance of the skin. By removing excess oil and tightening and shrinking the pores, toners also help prevent oils and toxins from settling into the skin, making it less prone to oiliness and breakouts. A good toner can also quickly and efficiently provide antioxidants, soothing agents, and hydration to your skin, all of which are essential to maintaining the skin’s elasticity, smoothness, and a youthful appearance. An added bonus of toners is that they also help other skin care products penetrate more quickly, and they can also be used during the day to revitalize and refresh the skin. Choose a toner based on your skin’s specific needs, but make sure to avoid those that are loaded with alcohol, witch hazel, or other skin-aggravating ingredients.

ou cannot help but feel instantaneous joy when you first set eyes on Katie G. Whipple’s f lower paintings. When you look longer, a plethora of meaning unfolds from every f lower she has painted. “I paint one flower a day,” Whipple said in her summer studio in Southampton, New York. She sat in front of a large painting of an arching quince branch, partially in bloom, with tulips and daffodils elegantly attached to it. “Even though I’m pretty young, I’ve been painting for a long time—over 20 years!” she said, laughing. She started painting at age 4 with her mother. Now at 26, after completing rigorous academic training at Grand Central Atelier (GCA), Whipple can paint anything she would want to represent with admirable skill. Over this past year, she has chosen to paint flowers.
(C.S. in the gardens of the American Academy in Rome where she started to make botanical paintings of grapevines, flowers, vegetables, and lemon, orange, persimmon, and apple trees. Upon returning to the United States, she was commissioned by the C.S. Lewis Institute in Ohio to paint the Annunciation, a triptych showing the moment depicted in the Bible when the angel Gabriel announces to the Virgin Mary that she will give birth to Jesus. The painting has lemon trees in the background and many floral elements. As she painted the figures of Gabriel and Mary, she longed to go back to painting the flowers in the background. In that painting, a lemon branch at the level of Gabriel’s mouth reaches across from the left panel to Mary on the right panel. “That was my representation for the word,” Whipple said. Yet it was as if an angel of flowers was whispering in her own ear, telling her that she would give birth to many floral paintings. “That realization was so shocking to me, because I always thought I would be a portrait painter,” she said. The day after dropping off the Annunciation in Ohio, “I just haven’t stopped painting flowers since,” she said. INVENTED IDEAL ARRANGEMENTS The f loral arrangements Whipple paints can only exist as paintings. Unlike other painters who set up a bouquet in a vase and paint from life until the flowers wither away, Whipple sets up one flower at a time. She designs her floral arrangement as she paints. She came up with her own method that allows her to dedicate a whole day’s work to each f lower, expressing the difference of each in more detail, she said. Like the impossible bouquets the Dutch Golden Age masters painted, Whipple paints flowers that we would never be able to see blooming together at the same time in nature. “I love how you can make things that can only exist in a painting, and especially with things like flowers, which are very transient,” she said.

Sometimes she has to be inventive in troubleshooting. She uses tape and string to hold each flower in place, especially for tulips because they move a lot and continue to grow after being cut. USEFULNESS OF BEAUTY For Whipple, the idea that beauty is in the eye of the beholder holds true only to a certain extent. “Obviously, everyone has different taste, but there is a universality to the things we can all agree on that are beautiful. Everyone stops in their tracks when they see the Winged Victory statue in the Louvre, no matter what culture they are from. We can all appreciate really beautiful, well-made things. There’s a universal language,” she said. Flowers are a more obvious example of what is universally considered beautiful. Just as flowers have inspired countless lines of poetry, Whipple can easily perceive the endless potential in painting them. “There’s something about flowers. I think we need them. she said. “They crack me up, too, especially daffodils. They have so much personality.” Her face lit up as she remembered her favorite quote from Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables. “‘The beautiful is as useful as the useful—perhaps more so,’” she said. Painting flowers became more useful than she could have anticipated. Whipple’s transition from her studies to establishing her career developed rather seamlessly. Yet she experienced a setback during her fourth and last year of study at GCA. At 22, she fell sick, and her doctor diagnosed her with a combination of depression and anxiety that had manifested physically. Since she has been painting f lowers, she has no longer been suffering from those symptoms to such a debilitating extent. She no longer needs any medication. “I mean, how can you look at a pink daffodil and not be happy? It’s like, ‘come on!’” she said, laughing. “I don’t have any trouble going into the studio and getting to work, and I really did before for a while.” She’s absolutely certain that painting flowers helped her heal from depression and anxiety. In a sense, it is as if the flowers are helping her cultivate herself and her artistry. Painting them brings out the best in her. ELEVATING FLOWER PAINTING Paintings of flowers are not generally considered as seriously as other types of paintings, such as figure paintings or landscapes.
“I decided I’m just going to paint flowers with the most integrity that I can and be as true to myself as I can,” she said. If she started painting something else, like figure paintings for instance, assuming that they are perceived to be more important, Whipple says, those paintings would probably look terrible because she would be unhappy. Looking at her painting of white lilies, she said, “I think of these as portraits. Just like a portrait painting used to be the only way anyone could ever be immortalized, I like to think I am giving these flowers a life longer than two weeks.”

All of the techniques she learned from representing the figure she applies to painting f lowers. Painting petals, for example, is similar to painting human skin “because they are translucent, have similar light effects, and are alive,” she said. Painting each one is a unique experience. “It’s important to notice those individual nuances,” she said, “the rhythms in the design.” Especially as an academic painter, she learned “to slow down, to pay attention to the little things in the world, and to see all those beautiful moments that happen,” she said.

SWEET DREAMS Liang Shi, the Co-Creator of NYC’s First Dessert Fest English text by Irene Luo | Chinese text by Crescent Dai | Photography by Liang Shi and Roberto Stefan
F
or designer and creative director Liang Shi, every day brims with exciting and grand possibilities. As 29-year-old Liang dives into new pursuits, she sets no limits on what she can achieve. With this energy and drive, Liang started a curated dinner series to meet more people in New York City; she launched her own pop-up matcha cafe because she fancied having her own coffee shop; and most recently, she and fellow dessert lover Miraya Berke single-handedly co-pioneered New York City’s first-ever dessert festival—Dessert Goals. Since the genesis of this day of indulgence last summer, the duo has held the event four times—thrice in New York and once in Los Angeles—always with immense success, selling out online tickets within minutes.
FINDING HER OWN PATH Liang’s parents divorced when she was a baby, so Liang was raised by her mom, who grew up in Shanghai, China. Her family “didn’t have very much,” Liang said. Since she was little, Liang watched her mother work tirelessly to support the family, regularly sending money home to her grandfather. To help out, Liang started working different part-time jobs when she was 16.

Since she was little, Liang enjoyed design, and she spent most of her time learning design on the computer by herself, starting in the sixth grade. Among her childhood accomplishments, Liang made her own cartoon signature for an online forum, designed her own blog, and created a Britney Spears fan website. “It’s very embarrassing,” Liang joked, but with seriousness, she added, “The best gift I ever recieved in my life was a computer from my mother.” During her college years studying advertising, Liang worked a dozen internships, including at three advertising agencies, and squeezed in wedding photoshoots on weekends to earn pocket money. After college, she moved from one full-time position to another, from Texas to New York City. But after a while, Liang felt the structure of a 9-to-5 job was stifling. After dabbling in freelance work, she eventually decided to become a full-time freelancer. “The first time, I was forced to do freelancing. However, it’s like once you’ve tasted what freedom is like, it’s hard not coming back.” As a freelancer, Liang worked hard to build a name for herself. She now boasts clients ranging from Condé Nast and SoulCycle to startups like MindBodyGreen, Levo League, and Soma Water.
AN EXPERIMENT While working as a designer, Liang also grappled with a number of ideas for a potential startup. In her free time, she started Fun Fun Field Trip, a camp for adults, and Fun Fun Dinner, a curated dinner series, so she could meet more people in New York City. Soon Liang was pondering a new endeavor: having her own coffee shop. It seemed impossible, so she settled on something smaller-scale—a pop-up, or temporary, cafe. But even that seemed daunting: “I had zero background in food, beverage, and the pop-up space,” Liang said. But she decided to try nonetheless, giving herself three months and breaking up the seemingly unfathomable goal into a series of doable steps. It was the beginning of MA MATCHA, a popup cafe selling handcrafted, original drinks made out of matcha, or powdered green tea. Its name is a tribute to Liang’s mother, whom Liang calls “ma” in the Shanghai dialect. Her mother’s zodiac animal is also a horse—or “ma” in Chinese.

After Liang shared the idea with her friends, she was connected to a mutual friend who proposed sharing a booth for a pop-up event two weeks later. Liang agreed and promptly started making the website, defining her brand, crafting the recipes, and ordering materials. When the event happened two weeks later, everything was sold out. Following the success of the first pop-up event, Liang did 11 more. “I just wanted to prove that I could start to do something. And every step you do, you start to build your momentum,” she said.
BUILDING SUGARY PARADISE Among the many friends Liang made with her dinner series was Miraya Berke, whom Liang met at her first dinner in June 2015. The two were both freelancers and were united by one passion—dessert. In the summer of 2016, while they were enjoying some delicious shaved snow, the two mused about a dessert festival. “Dumplings, beer—there’s a food festival for everything. So we thought somebody must be doing a dessert festival. But when we searched for it, we found it actually didn’t exist,” Liang said. So the two started to plan, splitting responsibilities and trusting each other’s expertise. Miraya handled event production, while Liang managed vendors, design, and marketing. This included shooting all the promotional photos—each a colorful, mouthwatering masterpiece. To publicize the event, the pair made an event page on Facebook and invited all their friends in New York, about 500 people in total. When they returned to the page the next day, they found over 10,000 people were interested in coming. By the day of the festival, that number had grown to 40,000. “It was a huge surprise. We thought we would do well. We didn’t think it could go that well,” Liang said. They expanded, holding Dessert Goals in larger venues and branching off to Los Angeles. “For us, it’s just like a dream. And we want to create the dream dessert experience for people,” Liang said. She and Miraya have already started planning for 2018. “The American dream—I take it literally. You have to work really hard to get where you want to go,” Liang said. “Every kind of dreams has steps,” she said. “The biggest step is to take action.

n stage, Golden Li captivates audiences with not only his technical mastery, but also his ability to capture the spirit and dignity of every character—from a valiant warrior to a modern-day spiritual believer who defies persecution with moral conviction. Rigorous dedication to his craft has made this 26-year-old a principal dancer of the world-renowned Shen Yun Performing Arts company as well as a dance instructor at his alma mater, Fei Tian Academy of the Arts, which trains many of Shen Yun’s performers. On his path to reaching the pinnacle of classical Chinese dance, Golden Li discovered that it was not so much about physical excellence as it was about the forging of his character—a continuous journey of spiritual elevation. Sitting atop the highest peak of New Jersey’s Kittatinny Mountains, he shared his story of transformation from a Michigan teenager to one of the world’s most extraordinar y ar tists. He exuded warmth with his Duchenne smile, but also impressed with his refined demeanor. Despite his slender physique, he emanated an inner masculinity, or yang qi—a strong but never overpowering force.
A PROMISE Golden’s mother first brought him to see a Shen Yun performance in 2006. Impressed by the energy and dignity within the art form, he decided to audition for Fei Tian Academy of the Arts, a premier school of classical Chinese dance in upstate New York. Golden had no prior training in dance, and he was far from a natural talent. In fact, he later learned that all the teachers at the audition deemed him unfit for admission because he lacked the right physical attributes. His posture was poor, his legs were slightly bowed, and his shoulders uneven from years of wearing a backpack on one shoulder—details barely noticeable to the casual observer, but red flags to the instructors.

Of the many teachers who scrutinized the boys at the audition, only one saw Golden’s potential. As all the other boys left for lunch, Golden was asked to stay behind. This one teacher looked him squarely in the eyes and asked him in Chinese, “Can you endure hardship?” Golden nodded. “Can you persevere?” Golden nodded again. A month later, Golden was officially accepted into Fei Tian Academy of the Arts. His words to that teacher became a promise, a vow to surmount physical and mental barriers as he molded himself into a world-class performing artist.
RETURNING TO HIS ROOTS It’s hard to imagine that Golden, now an ambassador of his culture, was once at risk of losing his heritage. After he moved from Xinjiang in China’s northwest to Canada at age 4, his Chinese rapidly deteriorated. One day at the beach, “I walked up to my mom and said to her in Chinese, ‘Mom, help me roll up my sleeves.’ But I stuck out my legs,” Golden says, chuckling at the memory. Golden’s mother, concerned he would irrevocably lose touch with his native tongue, sent him back to China for five months to rekindle his language abilities. At Shen Yun, Golden has a similar but grander mission—to revive China’s 5,000 years of vibrant culture through dance. “No culture or ethnic group has such a long, unbroken history. And during these five thousand years, Chinese culture has been continually enriched. Although every dynasty moved in a new direction, they also preserved the essence of the past,” Golden said. Much of the essence of China was lost in decades of communist revolutionary movements, but Shen Yun breathes new vitality into the lost traditions of the ancients. “Dance is a language that everyone can understand,” Golden said. “It makes them interested, prompting them to ponder what China is really like.” For Golden, beauty lies in tradition, shining only brighter with the passage of time.

culture is a spiritual vitality rooted in Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism. “It’s a culture bestowed by the divine,” Golden said. Since he was little, Golden remained close to his roots by practicing the ancient Chinese spiritual discipline of Falun Dafa with his mother. The practice led him on a path of continual self-reflection and improvement guided by the principles of truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance. Instead of outward pursuit, Falun Dafa taught Golden how to search inward and elevate himself by adhering to universal moral virtues. Golden sees dance in much the same way, and he persisted despite the objections of most of his family. “With a career in dance, you may devote an enormous amount but receive only very little,” Golden said, “But for me, what I obtain is not material. It’s something spiritual.” CULTIVATING ENDURANCE Although Golden now leaps across the world stage with agile grace, those moments of magnificence belie a grueling process of suffering. In the first year of training, he practiced six days a week often until 2 or 3 a.m. perfecting flips and tumbles. His injuries are innumerable: “I fell on my hip once, and for a month, just walking caused shooting pain. Not long after I recovered, I fell and injured my hip again,” he recalls. His most serious injury occurred when he was landing a backflip and tore his Achilles tendon. He still bears a thick purple-pink scar from the surgery. When he was injured, Golden almost never told his mother. “I did not want to worry her,” he confessed. It is fitting that one of Golden’s role models is general Yue Fei of the Song Dynasty, a man celebrated for embodying the Chinese virtues of loyalty and filial piety. As China was invaded from the north, Yue Fei was conf licted between defending his country and staying home to care for his aging mother. In the classic story, Yue Fei’s mother saw her son’s dilemma 54│時尚精英 ELITE
and tattooed four Chinese characters onto his back: “Loyally serve your country.” With his mother’s support, Yue Fei rushed into battle. Golden is a warrior in his own right, braving injury and toil for his art, a tribute to his homeland and its millennia-old heritage. He chose to play the general Yue Fei the first time he entered the New Tang Dynasty Television International Classical Chinese Dance Competition as part of the junior male division. His performance won gold. He later received two more consecutive gold medals in the adult male division of the same competition. In his many years of dancing, Golden considered giving up only once. It was in 2010, when he was made team leader in a new touring company. While balancing his studies for a college degree between daily performances, he was directing rehearsals and also offering counsel to other members of his company, sometimes until 3 or 4 a.m. At breaking point, he called his mother and confessed his desire to stop dancing. But upon deeper reflection, he realized: “An experience is only temporary. Once it passes, you may reflect, and perhaps it wasn’t so bad. Maybe you learned something from it. But it won’t last forever, and it won’t always be so difficult.” “Often, it all depends on whether or not you can adjust your inner state, your outlook on the difficult situation. It depends on whether or not you are clear on what you are doing and why you are doing it,” Golden said. “So I would just adjust my mindset and then persist.” FINDING PEACE Of his many roles, Golden especially cherishes playing a Falun Dafa practitioner in mainland China, depicting the story of millions of fellow adherents who defend their moral convictions in the face of communist brutality. As a dancer, he evokes their dignity and resilience, inspiring global audiences. This spirit of moral conviction permeates all of Chinese history, and perhaps that’s why Golden feels an affinity for the ancients, even though thousands of
years separate them. In peace and in war, they lived by certain principles in their pursuit of an elevated ideal. Golden pointed to the life of Confucius, the sage who endowed Chinese civilization with benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and integrity. In fact, Golden said, “He wasn’t successful until after he died.” Although the philosopher went from kingdom to kingdom spreading his teachings, his ideas only gained traction centuries later during the Han Dynasty. “For his entire life, Confucius sought more wisdom,” Golden said. “It took him his whole life to figure it out,” but in the end “he knew how to conduct himself in any circumstance.” Golden pushes himself with the same outlook on life: “It is not a matter of how successful I am, but rather, as a person, what kind of person I seek to be. It’s like in ancient China, a man held himself to a standard of righteousness.” “If a man knows how he should conduct himself and what he should do, his heart will be at peace,” Golden said.

YEVGENIY REZNIK Excellence Born of a Simple Wish English text by Sarah Matheson | Chinese text by Yi-Chun Lin | Photography by Larry Dai

larinetist Yevgeniy Reznik was 17 when he left his home in Ukraine to further his music studies in the United States. Living so far from his family at such a young age, he would quietly reflect on the suffering of his grandfather’s generation to gain perspective. Today, even when in concert, he constantly reminds himself to think of others. Now an accomplished musician, Yevgeniy has toured with New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts for five years throughout Asia and North America. He is currently preparing for Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra concerts at Carnegie Hall on Oct. 14 and 15, which are part of an international tour spanning South Korea, Taiwan, Canada, and the United States. The Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra, which debuted at Carnegie Hall in 2012, is unique in that it brings together classical Chinese instruments—such as the two-stringed erhu and the pipa—with Western strings, woodwinds, and brass. This year’s concerts will feature Shen Yun’s celebrated original compositions, along with timeless orchestral classics by Dvořák, Suppé, and Tchaikovsky.
IMMERSED IN MUSIC Born in Ukraine in 1984, Yevgeniy started elementary school on Sept. 1, 1991—just one week after Ukraine declared independence from the Soviet Union on Aug. 24, 1991. Yevgeniy believes his was the first year of new entrants who did not have to wear the red neck scarf or a Lenin pin. Ukraine’s school system is slightly different from the United States; the schools run from 1st to 11th grade. But Yevgeniy was not enrolled in just any school— he was enrolled in one of Ukraine’s five specialized secondary music schools. His father had sensed that if his two sons were immersed in music from a young age, 56│時尚精英 ELITE

they would gain a good moral foundation and have more opportunities later in life. As fate would have it, both his sons became accomplished musicians. Yevgeniy and his older brother Roman started their musical education playing cello. Roman studied cello for four years before he seemed to plateau and switched to bassoon. A similar thing happened with Yevgeniy after four years of study, and so he switched to clarinet in 1995. There was nothing particular about the clarinet that appealed to Yevgeniy. “My brother had a lot of success with bassoon, so my parents thought, ‘Okay, try a wind instrument; maybe you will do better—cello is not going so well,’” he says, laughing. And so Yevgeniy started playing clarinet with only a simple wish to do well. He believed more opportunities for musicians were in the West. “Again I am following my brother’s footsteps,” he says. “Because when he was 17, he auditioned at the Vienna Academy of Music, and he was accepted.” In 1999, Yevgeniy made a recording and sent it to the most prestigious and expensive boarding high school in the United States, Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan. He was accepted on a full scholarship, which covered his tuition, room, and board. “I remember when they actually accepted me and gave me all this, it was like $30,000 a year in 2001—it was a lot of money,” he says. Yevgeniy turned 17 in the summer of 2001, and in September he came to the United States to attend Interlochen Arts Academy. His first teacher in the United States was Nathan Williams, a very talented clarinetist who had a doctorate from Juilliard. “From him, I learned how to actually spend time in a practice room wisely,” Yevgeniy says. When musicians practice, optimally they should use a sound-isolated practice room. At Interlochen Arts Academy, Yevgeniy was required to spend four hours a day in the practice room, where the only sound he could hear was his own, and he would work on perfecting the sound. “We just want to make the most beautiful sound so that when we play that sound, it touches people and it’s meaningful,” he says. From 2001 to 2012 until he joined Shen Yun, Yevgeniy attended four different schools in the United States: Interlochen Arts Academy for his high school, Grand Valley State University in Michigan for his Bachelor of Music degree, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln for his Master of Music degree (where he also served as a graduate teaching assistant), and the University of Texas 58│時尚精英 ELITE
Young Artist Woodwind division Competition、the State Competition and the Collegiate Competition
at Austin for his Doctor of Musical Arts degree (where he also served two years as a graduate teaching assistant and in an academic assistant position for one year). “It’s not just about working hard, because a lot of people work hard, a lot of people can practice instruments, but you have to practice the right way,” he says. “And you just have to have that inner feel for music so that when you play, it can have an effect.” Yevgeniy’s dedication and strong will resonated in his playing, and he received another full scholarship based on his audition to attend a Bachelor of Music degree program at Grand Valley State University in Michigan. Here he worked with a professor named Arthur Campbell, who not only guided him on how to play the clarinet but also emphasized the importance of being a good citizen. Campbell’s main priority was, of course, to help Yevgeniy become the best clarinetist he could be so that he would be able to go on to graduate school. “But he also kind of guided me, like what’s wrong, what’s good, because in college there’s drinking” and other temptations, Yevgeniy says, adding, “It’s easy to lose focus, and lose sight of things. So that was helpful—to stay focused.” During his undergraduate studies in Michigan, Yevgeniy won top clarinetist and alternate to the overall winner at the 2005 Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Young Artist Woodwind State Competition. He was required to prepare a 40-minute program from four different periods for the competition, and play in front of the faculty. HALLMARKS OF EXCELLENCE Yevgeniy’s musical successes continued. In 2007, while he was studying for his master’s degree at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, he won the MTNA Young Artist Woodwind Division Competition, and then went on to win the State Competition and the Collegiate Competition. In 2009, he was admitted to the University of Texas at Austin for his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in clarinet performance. Nathan Williams, his first teacher in the United States, had taken a faculty position at the University of Texas at Austin a year earlier, in 2008. “When I came to America, I started with this teacher; and for my last studies of clarinet, for my last degree, I finished also with him,” Yevgeniy says. Williams ultimately showed him, “If you want to do something well, you have to be so dedicated, and you have to be consistently dedicated,” Yevgeniy says.
Principal clarinetist with Shen Yun Performing Arts, Yevgeniy Reznik believes that if you want to do something well, you have to be very dedicated, and you have to be consistently dedicated.

AUDITIONING FOR SHEN YUN Yevgeniy’s journey to Shen Yun was guided by a Taiwanese friend named Yuen-suo Yang, who also studied clarinet at the University of Texas at Austin but had graduated in the year ahead of him. In 2011 Yang suggested that Yevgeniy consider auditioning for the company after he graduated. “I was like, ‘Okay, I will keep that in mind,’” Yevgeniy says. In the summer of 2011, Yevgeniy was awarded a scholarship based on a competitive audition to attend a six-week program at the Yale Summer School of Music, called the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival. While there, he performed in a chamber music setting with members of the Tokyo String Quartet and also with professors from Juilliard, the Manhattan School of 60│時尚精英 ELITE
Music, and Yale. “That was a great experience to perform closely with those accomplished professors and musicians and to learn from them about music making at the highest level. I benefited a lot from it,” he says. In the spring of 2012, Yevgeniy and his then-girlfriend Chia-jung Lee (now she’s his wife), went to see Shen Yun Performing Arts at Lincoln Center in April, and afterward they both auditioned for the Shen Yun orchestra. Chia-jung, like Yevgeniy, has an impressive résumé with several important competition wins, and it includes a doctoral degree in flute performance from the University of Texas at Austin, a master’s degree from Boston University, and a bachelor’s degree from Sun Yat-sen University in Taiwan, where she was raised.
Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra (SYSO) at Boston Symphony Hall in October 2016. SYSO is returning to New York’s Carnegie Hall on Oct. 14 and 15 for two performances as part of a global tour.
Yevgeniy’s and Chia-jung’s auditions were both successful, and a month later, in May 2012, they relocated to Shen Yun’s base in New York state. Shen Yun has one of the busiest tour schedules in the world, and since Yevgeniy joined in 2012, the dance companies have grown from three touring companies to five. Though they tour for four and a half months every year, performing in 35 cities, Yevgeniy rarely feels tired. On days where his touring company has a matinée and an evening performance, Yevgeniy does the Falun Dafa meditation between shows to keep his energy up. He says meditating helps clear his mind of extraneous thoughts and allows him to focus on playing well. Falun Dafa is a traditional meditation practice from China based on the principles of truthfulness, compas-
sion, and tolerance. In China, the practitioners have been severely persecuted since 1999. Most of Shen Yun’s artists practice the Falun Dafa meditation and exercises daily. After performing more than 100 shows a season, Yevgeniy maintains a high standard by always remembering that the audience is new each time. “If I start to think about myself, then I might think that I feel tired at times, but that’s just me thinking about myself, rather than thinking that we are doing this for the audience,” he says. “When I let go of self and think about other people, I receive the energy I need.” Yevgeniy believes he will be with Shen Yun for many years to come. “The way it just unfolded is because it is meant to be like this, so I just walk on this path.”
ELLIE JOHNSON ‘Because nice does matter’ 巴菲特旗下地產公司紐約總裁專訪 English text by Sarah Matheson | Chinese text by Janet Ma | Photo by Xuehui Zhang
A
powerhouse in New York’s real estate industry, a woman renowned for both her business acumen and her charm, is building the New York real estate arm of one of the world’s most influential companies. Ellie Johnson is a name familiar to anyone involved in Manhattan’s luxury real estate industry. For almost 11 years she ran a prestigious real estate office on the Upper East Side in Manhattan. During her tenure, she grew the office’s successful sales team from 70 to 140 agents. Known for its abundance of highly polished women and men, her office ranked first in sales revenue for the company year after year. She has now been entrusted with building a full-service real estate firm on behalf of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, a company owned by business magnate Warren Buffett, the second-wealthiest individual in the United States. ELLIE’S JOURNEY EAST Ellie’s childhood was in El Salvador, and her teen years and young adult years were spent in the United States on the West Coast. Her real estate career started in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she sold 14 homes in her first year. “I attribute the success to the manner in which I treated my clients; they always came first, the commissions followed,” she says, smiling warmly. In 2000, family brought her to New York from the West Coast. Although she found the Manhattan real estate landscape very different, feeling it lacked standards for service and transparency to the consumer, she remembers going home and telling her husband, “You can fund me so I can start my own company, or I can become ladies who lunch.” He replied quickly, “Where do I sign?” Ellie recalls, laughing.

Ellie Johnson , president of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices New York Properties.
The company she established in 2002 was Executive Brokers. Ellie feels extremely blessed and fortunate that her experiences over the past 17 years in Manhattan’s competitive real estate industry have enabled her to achieve great success in her career. Her transition to Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices is another milestone on her résumé. She attributes this to the high standards she sets for herself, her employees, and her sales executives. “The stars were aligned; it was a mutual meeting,” Ellie says of her new role. “I guess I have to say that I was at the right place at the right time, with the right people. And it was one of those things where I still pinch myself, and think ‘how did this happen?’” She says Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices is allowing her to build their company and their business in New York the same way that she built up her company. “That was very appealing to me,” she says. “They are very trusting of my judgment and decision-making, guided by my CEO, Candace Adams.”
MANHATTAN LUXURY REAL ESTATE Ellie has aligned Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices New York Properties to serve and provide services to all of her clients, be it at the highest end of the luxury market, or for someone buying their first home or a commercial property. It is also important to her that Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices’ clients get an immediate response and experience the highest level of service—the same level of service that allowed her to sell 14 homes at the beginning of her career. “This feeling can only be accomplished by ensuring that the client’s needs are the agent’s most important asset,” Ellie says. A Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices New York Properties partnership with the Doyle auction house puts her office on an exclusive pedestal with other players in New York’s luxury market. Ellie says that when you are working in certain levels of the real estate industry, especially in the luxury markets, it’s synonymous to have the auction and art world components to the business. “And it’s reciprocal; by working together we can provide ‘white-glove’ services to our clients, from a home’s contents to the sale of their home.”

WORK–LIFE BALANCE Ellie compares the lifestyle of a broker with that of the gazelle that gets up every morning and starts running and doesn’t stop until the sun goes down. “We’re dealing with the global market, where different time zones have created a 24/7 environment, similar to the hotel industry. For example, a client looking online at a potential investment, personal residence, or a studio apartment for his or her outbound college student is going to hit Send at four in the morning (ET) and expect an immediate response.” Understanding the pressures agents face, Ellie is a big believer in mindfulness in the workplace. She allows her agents to take time off when they need it, and she makes an appointment with herself every day to maintain her work–life balance. For Ellie, spending time with her family and maintaining mindfulness are always the top priorities. Dressed immaculately in an azure blue dress, Ellie is a picture of warmth and surprisingly downto-earth. “I have had incredible mentors along the way— people who were so willing to share their knowledge and skills—and I carry that through my career. I try to extend that to my employees and my sales team members. They say that if you plant seeds you get flowers, and I try to weed my garden every day so that the weeds won’t grow,” she says, laughing. Her office is home to a few special keepsakes given to her by some of her sales executives throughout her career, including an interesting sign that reads “Because Nice Matters.” It was originally given to her by one of her agents for her beach house. The sign had such an incredible impact that she has kept it in her office ever since. “Because nice does matter. As the saying goes, say what you mean but don’t say it meanly, right?” she says, laughing. Ellie believes that having the right people is incredibly important, and Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices’ executive team follows the same philosophy. Ellie was drawn to the fact that all the executives in the company’s residential arena started out in sales, allowing them to understand how the agents feel on the other side of the desk and to empathize with the pressures that agents face.

“Our chairman of the board for HomeServices of America, Ron Peltier—every time you walk out of a room where he’s present, you just want to hug him like a teddy bear,” she says. “These are very powerful, successful people, and yet they’re so approachable and willing to share their skills, their knowledge, their resources in a way that you just want to do more.” Ellie has specifically chosen staff members who have “that integrity and that moral compass that aligns them to really respond to your needs.” Since the soft launch of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices New York Properties in January, Ellie’s office has received a great response from the brokerage community, the general public, and the financial world. She attributes the success of this launch to Katharine Riggle, marketing director for New York Properties. “There’s such an incredible passion for Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices that people want it to succeed; there’s that energy that is underneath. It’s like a current underneath all of it,” Ellie says. In the financial world, Berkshire Hathaway is

The company also provides shareholders with lucrative returns on investment. “I believe that the core values and foundation in which Warren Buffett created his companies, and his dedication and genuine interest in people and in humanity as a whole, transfers through everything that is touched by that brand,” Ellie says. Though Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices of America is a relative newcomer to the United States real estate industry ( HomeServices of America was founded in 1998), it is the second-largest real estate company in the nation, with 42,000 agents across the country. Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices New York Properties is part of a global expansion effort that will see the company establish a presence in many markets in coming years. ECLECTIC BALANCE
IN A LOS ANGELES COTTAGE Windsor Smith:打造和諧共生的家居環境 English text by Sarah Matheson| Chinese text by Crescent Dai Photography by Michael Wells
The garden room, bathed in glorious light, features a soaring ceiling and Georgian-style doors that open to a courtyard with a pool.
A
ccent furniture from some of California’s most respected designers and carefully placed antiques bring an eclectic harmony to a spacious shingle cottage in Los Angeles. The 5,200-square-foot, five-bedroom, four-bathroom home is located in Brentwood—the former neighborhood of Hollywood star Marilyn Monroe— and was completed in 1992. Santa Monica-based interior designer Windsor Smith’s talents were enlisted to enhance the intrinsic beauty of the home. Adhering to her philosophy of giving people living spaces that support their families rather than simply creating beautiful rooms, Windsor mixed furniture styles and periods to enhance the light, airy, functional qualities of the cottage for her client. The garden room—with its lofty, structured quality—was ornately blessed with high ceilings, clean lines, and Georgian-style doors that open to an exterior courtyard and pool, granting a wealth of glorious natural light all year around. Windsor chose to juxtapose chinoiserie-style furniture with modern bookcases and a Maison Jansen coffee table. She selected calm grays and blues for the room’s palette to serve as an extension of the pool and sky. Ambient sounds of water trickling and birdsong add to the room’s almost reclusive feeling. The interplay between the sunlight streaming in and the furnishing of the room at different times of day is an integral part of the room’s experience. The functionally of the room is noted through a wall-mounted big-screen television and, at the opposite end, a leather-top writing desk with gold embellishment from the Windsor Smith Home Collection. “It’s the combination of elements that make a room sing,” Windsor says. Moving into the spacious music room, eclectic elements again manifest harmoniously. Assorted chairs from different styles and periods are set around a custom table crafted with sawhorse-style legs and a white caesarstone top. Windsor’s goal was to create a fun interactive space, 68│時尚精英 ELITE

where people could gather around the fire and perhaps even have a sing-along. One particularly exquisite item is a white painted wood chair at the head of the table. From the Windsor Smith Home Collection, the chair is embellished with gorgeous gold-colored detailing on the arm and is built with harmonious, flowing curves. Upholstered in Windsor Smith Home Collection fabric for Kravet, this piece was a prototype for Windsor’s collection with Century Furniture. On top of the table, a silver tea service and an English 1920s silver-plate samovar add to the grandeur, bringing a little tradition into what could be a very contemporary setting. The fireplace is certainly a point of focus. Windsor
crafted the mantel from glossy black painted brick for the client’s existing fireplace. The area rug over the ebony flooring is Windsor Smith for Kravet, and the round coffee table is from Californian vintage-modern-style furniture brand Lawson-Fenning. Windsor paired a light-purple iconic swan chair with a lightbeige leather Barbara Barry chair, and the two beige club chairs are Darryl Carter. On the perimeter of the music room, Windsor f lanked the family’s grand piano with a Windsor Smith Home Collection mirror that resembles an antique and twin periwinkle opaline vases from the 1920s that are set on exquisite water-gilded wood shelves. Rich ebony mahogany flooring makes a powerful, contrasting statement beneath it all.

Silver and earthy tones in the master suite are balanced with carefully placed contrasts.
A
contemporary home in Poland brings together classic style, neat forms, and striking contrasts. Inspired by luxurious summer homes in the Hamptons on New York’s Long Island, interior designer Lucyna Kolodziejska of Fabryka Wnetrz employed a light, breezy color scheme, which she balanced against dark, often pure black elements. The home is one of her most time-consuming projects to date, and she designed the interior spaces to complement her clients’ interests and lifestyle, and to display special items from their travels. Lucyna started working on the project while the home was still in the design phase, which allowed her more input regarding important architectural elements, such as where the skylights should be positioned. The heart of the home is the kitchen, where a half-octagon-shaped bay window frames part of the room. Her clients had initially considered putting cabinets under the window, but Lucyna felt the bay window was an ideal space for a relaxed, less formal dining area. Her clients liked the idea, and so Lucyna designed a custom table and window seats with storage 74│時尚精英 ELITE

that act as dining chairs. The tabletop, counters, and the splash in the kitchen were crafted from blue-gray Italian marble from Carrara—the same marble source used hundreds of years ago by Michelangelo and Bernini for their sculptures. The kitchen walls display several art and decor items that Lucyna’s clients picked up during various trips abroad. “The owners seem to have souvenirs from every continent apart from Antarctica,” Lucyna says. “I arranged the collection thematically, and so gorgeous Venetian masks are decorating the hallway on the second floor, and the chess corner in a relaxation room is fully dedicated to India. Almost every spot in the house now carries memories and has become a place worthy of its owners.” The luxurious home has a sauna, gym, music room, a formal dining area off the great room, a spacious master suite, and exquisite furniture and decorative hardware throughout. “I would not be true to myself, and my clients would be probably disappointed, had we not designed more modern interiors,” she says.

opper Beach in Oyster Bay Cove, New York, is a spectacular waterfront estate promising both opulence and relaxation. Set on five beautifully manicured acres graced by majestic specimen trees and verdant lawns, Copper Beach is a masterpiece of modern architecture designed by Keller Sandgren Architects. Positioned for panoramic views across the bay to Connecticut, the luxurious interior spaces of the 12,000-square-foot, seven-bedroom home blend seamlessly with multilevel terraces, an outdoor heated pool area, the generous grounds, and the bay beyond. Frances Covella and Lois Kirschenbaum of Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty are the home’s exclusive listing agents. The gated property is at the end of a cul-de-sac. The home’s modern interiors immaculately transition through floor-to-ceiling windows to rear patios, lawns and gardens, a gazebo, a flowing artesian well, and the spectacular water views. “Wherever you are in the home, you have this incredible view of the water and the property,” Kirschenbaum says.
