Everlasting Aspirations

ife offers one chance—we hope that the story of every person featured in ELITE can serve as nourishment for your life. The people featured in this issue, regardless of whether they are artists, architects, or entrepreneurs, during the course of our interviews, did not overemphasize their own importance or their personal efforts. Rather, they told a narrative of their determination, from beginning to end, to uphold the heart they had at the outset. During our discussions, they tended to start with the smallest details, talking about the most fundamental things. Seemingly commonplace, their stories often touched our hearts—originally, regardless of what they were doing, they wanted to reach the pinnacle. Without emphasizing their “skills” and “abilities,” they instead focused on their initial intentions and constantly progressed from this foundation. Besides a drive toward self-fulfillment and achievement within their craft, they feel compelled by a duty to infuse their work with cultural significance that can uplift and benefit society as a whole. This sense of duty helps them remain unaffected by changes in society’s value systems—they do not simply follow the crowd. In this complicated world, they uphold the authenticity in their hearts. The owner of an award-winning Michelin-star restaurant for the last five consecutive years, Yiming Wang said, “You have to believe in the power of time, the power of details—determination will bring marvels.” In this age of McDonaldized media, ELITE still believes that by telling a story earnestly, the story will have the power to penetrate and nourish. We hope these stories can help you retain your original intentions. Original intentions are life’s wings. They can take us soaring upward toward a broader world.

lending native medicinal herbs through traditional Korean methods, the holistic skincare brand Sulwhasoo, the number one luxury skincare brand in its home country of Korea, is gaining worldwide popularity through its efficient and time proven skin wellness regimes. According to ancient Korean herbal medicine wisdom, the body undergoes significant internal changes every seven years with vital energies starting to diminish and fall out of balance at age 35, making the skin more vulnerable to the aging process. A big believer in Korean medicinal herbs and ginseng, Sulwhasoo’s founder Suh Sung-whan already as a young boy discovered the benefits and healing powers of ginseng while growing up in Gaesong, a city known for its particularly high-quality ginseng. He subsequently dedicated his life to finding ways to produce cosmetics using the miraculous properties of ginseng, while finding cutting-edge ways to balance the inner energies of the skin and countering the aging process. The first Ginseng Cream was launched in 1966, marking the beginning of a 50-year legendary road of groundbreaking research and skincare advances. One of Sulwhasoo’s all-time best sellers, The First Care Activating Serum, has become a “must have” for loyal customers around the world, including in the USA, where Sulwhasoo made its North America debut in 2010 by entering the luxurious department store Bergdorf Goodman in New York, further solidifying its legendary mark as one of the front runners in the competitive beauty industry.

MASTERS OF THE WOVEN SILK TIE The History of Italo Ferretti English text by Sarah Matheson and Jennifer Zhang | Chinese text by Cresent Dai | Photos by Italo Ferretti
I
n the seaside resort town of Silvi Marina on Italy’s eastern coast, the Ferretti family has developed a reputation as the region’s preeminent necktie atelier. Handcrafted from the finest silks, Italo Ferretti ties produce a strong knot, while maintaining a neat, plush quality. As the prized cravats of a man’s closet, Italo Ferretti neckwear can be easily paired to complete a gentleman’s look. While the majority of Italian tie makers select finished fabrics from silk mills in Como, Italo Ferretti first designs the patterns and then has the fabrics commissioned. The construction of the ties also sets the brand apart, astonishing many clients, and several international patents ensure that only Italo Ferretti can achieve such a level of quality. For decades, Italo Ferretti’s luxury ties were available only in Europe, but around nine years ago the company entered the U.S. market. Italo Ferretti was the exclusive producer of neckwear under the Brioni label for around 30 years starting in the 1970s, and has produced luxury ties under the company founder’s eponymous label since 1967. United States President Donald Trump is one of Italo Ferretti’s high-profile clients. After returning from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida in mid-April, the president arrived at Andrews Air Force Base wearing a bespoke red silk Italo Ferretti tie. A photograph showed the tie blowing in the wind ever so slightly. But, unlike many of the president’s other ties, this tie remained in place due to the patented stitching and double flaps that add weight to the tail of the tie, and the patented “navetta” that Italo Ferretti uses to replace a traditional tie clip. Italo Ferretti’s formal necktie collections are exceptional. Made with precise hand-sewn details that epitomize Italian chic, Italo Ferretti produces luxury ties to be treasured.

FAMILY LEGACY
Immersed in the culture of his father’s workshop from a very young age, the company’s current CEO, Carlo Ferretti, has a particular eye for craftsmanship. When Carlo was 10 years old, he considered the tie workshop a place to play, to watch, and to learn. He would quietly observe the artisans tacitly focused on their tasks, their deft fingers pulling needles through rich, vibrant silk, with a passion for which Italians are renowned. Today, when an artisan completes a new prototype, Carlo will personally try it out by wearing it five or six

times. Understanding the experience that a tie evokes is the final test of quality for Italo Ferretti. This tradition was started by Carlo’s father when his three sons were still very young, long before the boys joined the company’s management.
VAST VINTAGE TIE COLLECTION
Italo Ferretti’s warehouse is full of treasures, with exquisite and unique ties that the company’s artisans crafted decades ago. Carlo amusedly reflects on how quickly trends evolve: What was once in vogue can now look quite dated.
Italo Ferretti master tailors craft luxury shirts from the finest silks, meticulously hand sewing the collar, cuffs, body, rack, and pockets, with a ratio of 30 stitches per inch.
I wanted to write to tell you that I have received many, many compliments on the three Italo Ferretti ties I purchased at Avanti in Las Vegas. In fact, I believe I have received more compliments on them than any other ties I own.” J. Warner, Chicago

For each piece of silk that comes through the workshop, only four ties are made; so when a particular piece of silk is gone, the specific tie is also gone forever. The limited quantities give one an appreciation of the exclusivity and quality of the products, and the long-lasting craftsmanship that goes into each Italo Ferretti tie. For Carlo and his family, neckties are more than sartorial elegance. It’s their life, their tradition, and their legacy.
AIMING FOR PERFECTION
The company’s founder and Carlo’s father, Italo Ferretti believes that once you decide on a certain course in life you need to pay full attention to it, investing both your heart and your soul into it. Not only has he put his heart into the business, but he has also taken his family deep into the world of tie making. Italo established the workshop more than four decades ago, after repeatedly buying ties in Como, the heart of Italy’s tie manufacturing industry, and then reselling them in Abruzzo. But as demand for his neckties grew, Italo decided to establish an atelier in his home-

town. He then invested a great deal of time and effort into learning the skills of the trade. Italo derives a pure pleasure from being in the workshop, touching the silk, examining the ties, and looking over the intricate details of his artisans’ craftsmanship. As he gradually passes the business down to his three sons, the products that have been his life’s work keep beckoning him back. Though now in his retirement years, he remains a traditional Italian craftsman at heart. Italo endlessly strives to create superior products, and he personally checks the quality of every item crafted in the family’s workshop. From his point of view, fine craftsmanship is the soul of Italy’s luxury fashion industry. Throughout his life, Italo has envisioned and commissioned masterpieces of style in his hometown of Silvi. He has become known as a maestro of Italy’s luxury tie industry, a reputation that his family will no doubt carry forward for many years to come. The company now boasts eight international patents, ensuring each product carries an air of exclusivity while adhering to quality standards that are among the highest in the world.

When she composes, she does so as a resident artist in the Eleventh Street Arts gallery, New York, adjacent to a workspace shared by painters and sculptors who have broken from the norm by creating representational art in the traditional style. “There’s a sense of almost an electric energy, with everyone working together and trying to lift each other up,” Ross said of the connecting Grand Central Atelier (GCA), the art school that owns the gallery and focuses on training in the classical tradition. To her, this place “feels like an oasis.” It was a relief to find so many contemporary artists who are looking to the past and dedicating their lives to perfecting their craft, to attaining something ideal, just as classical musicians have done by playing Bach for hundreds of years. These artistic traditions provide a depth crucial to humanity, she added. “I think people now really, really crave substance, whether we know it or not,” she said. “People want something with depth. We’re really craving it as a society.” Traditional arts, on the other hand, demand something from you—emotional honesty, engagement as a listener or viewer, or dedication to your craft as an artist. Once you’ve been opened up and have encountered that depth, you’re primed to reconnect with the world and others in a way you weren’t before, she said. “[You see] a new perspective, or it’ll capture your imagination and unlock this whole world that’s out there, and it can really transform you.” In her own way, she is on a mission to use music to help people to connect.

At the gallery, Ross curates a concert program as well. Many attendees are the artists working adjacent to her in the atelier, and after each concert there’s a Q&A session with the performers that sparks conversations about line and harmonic proportions and the overlaps between these classical forms. “The energy is totally intoxicating for everyone,” she said. “It makes me perform in a different way, and for the audience, it’s a heightened experience.” Discussing art with artists is a highlight of Ross’s residency, but she truly believes in the power of great art to communicate, to speak volumes all on its own. “I truly believe music speaks for itself,” she said. In 2012, Ross was awarded a grant from the Leonore Annenberg Fellowship Fund for the Performing and Visual Arts, and she asked herself: What sort of artist did she want to be? What works would get her to that level? Her answer was Bach because “you really have to bring courage and honesty to this music,” she said. “You can’t hide anything, you’re all by yourself. It’s almost like that idea of climbing the mountain, but every time you think it’s the peak, it’s really a new plateau.” In addition to recording an album of all the Bach solo works for violin, since 2015 she has brought this music to the people of New York. She played in bakeries and offices, on boardwalks and ferries. The one caveat with playing in public spaces was that she would not do it in a noise-polluted environment, like an underground subway station. It needed to be quiet; otherwise, it wouldn’t be fair to either the music or the listeners. Her experiences proved her hypothesis correct: “You just have to get people in a room and give it to them; that’s enough. This music withstands time.” She remembers conversations with New Yorkers who did not look at all like they had been listening while she was playing, but were actually quite moved and engaged, and shared their thoughts with her afterwards. She remembers people bursting into applause, the hugs and smiles. In addition to acquainting people on the street with Bach, she was exercising her performance muscles, as the experience was completely different from being removed from people and on a stage. “Each time was unique and taught me something different about performing,” Ross said.

AFFIRMING THE ART IN ARCHITECTURE Richard Cameron Shares His Journey Toward Classicism
English text by Milene Fernandez | Chinese text by Crescent Dai | Photos by Atelier & Co.
W
hen Richard Cameron shows up at a meeting with a portfolio full of handmade drawings, people are almost flabbergasted. The drawings almost take on a magical quality in a world dominated by pixilated images and mass production. “One of the terrible problems of architecture now is that it is a profession without its core—which is an artistic practice, first and foremost. If architecture is not an art, it is nothing,” Cameron said in his architectural design firm, Atelier & Co. in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Cameron co-founded Atelier & Co. with Jason Grimes in 2009 intending to bring artistry back into architecture. They collaborate with architects and artisans to work on a range of projects, from residential to commercial buildings, as well as interiors and preservation projects, like their proposal to restore the original Penn Station designed by Charles McKim. Looking at any of Atelier & Co.’s drawings immediately awakens one’s imagination. Cameron explained that drawing and painting by hand is the most intimate way to convey a designed space that is yet to become tangible. Each creative consideration can be illustrated in detail. Inevitably Atelier & Co. does use computer-aided design programs (CAD), but only as a tool in service of their handmade drawings.
INOCULATED FROM A MODERNIST DOGMA
“The things that endure had an artistic intent and an artistic value to them because architects where always trained as fine artists,” Cameron said, as he explained why classical architecture is timeless. Cameron reached that understanding in a circumvented way. The education he received at the University of Toronto was diametrically opposite to what he’s doing now. He has since taught himself draftsmanship and drawing techniques of the 19th century Beaux-Arts School.

As a child he was exposed to plenty of beautiful architecture when his family lived in various parts of Europe: Oxford, England; Budapest, Hungary; and in France. He knew he wanted to become an architect and enjoyed buildings with tradition, but said, “You are taught a kind of ideology that no one ever does that anymore.” He recalled how the Chair of the Architecture School at the University of Toronto, Peter Prangnell, gave a slide-show presentation to all of the students—“a kind of indoctrination talk,” he called it. Cameron recalled Prangnell praising modernist iconic buildings like those by Le Corbusier. “At one point he put up a sequence of shots of the main axis of Versailles, which I remember very vividly experiencing as a child. And his line to accompany this was, ‘Have you ever seen anything more boring and predictable than that.’ And I remember thinking, ‘No, that’s not right, that’s one of the most astonishing and dramatic moments in architecture that I have ever experienced,” Cameron said.

Then he recalled Prangnell showing a picture of Chatsworth House. “This was the dramatic moment of the talk; it was like we were taking the pledge of allegiance, and he said, ‘I want you all, every one of you in this room to promise me, you will never, ever do anything that looks remotely like this,’ but I remember thinking, ‘No, I’m not going to promise that, are you kidding?! This is Chatsworth House. It’s amazing; it’s one of the great Baroque masterpieces of the world!” Cameron said. That education was like “a communist or totalitarian mind control program,” he said. Later the school changed, but he realized at that time (around 1981) it was a more extreme version of what most architecture schools are still fundamentally about today. The students experienced so much stress that some “would literally check out and end up in the psych ward. It was really bad, and we weren’t learning any professional skills at all. There were people who graduated from the program, who really became indoctrinated and still talk like that,” Cameron said. His childhood memories of beautiful architecture in Europe had, in effect, protected him from such indoctrination. He was also fortunate to meet his main teacher, mentor, and friend, Michael Djordjevitch who taught him all things classical, and who also works with him at Atelier & Co. Atelier & Co. often gets involved in the initial stages of a project, in helping people envision how it can be done. That’s partly why the Rebuild Penn Station project is a natural fit. In his proposal for rebuilding the original Penn Station, Cameron quoted Henry Hope Reed: “The classical is at once retrospective and ever new. The backward glance transforms and regenerates. Every generation of classical architecture has its own vision of perfection and its own Golden City.” Atelier & Co. is inspired to approach truth through beauty. Cameron explained, “When you find something beautiful, you love it. … So when you create ugly antagonistic buildings, for instance, you kill love. People may think ugly ‘contemporary’ buildings are interesting, unusual, off-putting, edgy, or whatever else they are, but those buildings are ultimately producing anxiety.” “I think the majority of people will revert back to the affection for traditional things because those are actually based on thousands of thousands of years of human experimentation in the world of aesthetics,” Cameron said.

PURSUING THE IDEAL COURSE Restaurateurs Share the Tastes of Old Shanghai

utfitted with nostalgic 1930s-era Shanghai decor, and offering authentic Chinese cuisine, China Blue in New York’s Tribeca neighborhood is an elegant restaurant with an abundance of heart. The sister restaurant of Café China, a Michelin star winner for the last five consecutive years and the only Chinese restaurant in New York City with a Michelin star, China Blue is a manifestation of the will of two former Wall Street bankers and their desire to bring traditional Chinese culture to the heart of the United States. While Yiming Wang and Xian Zhang’s Michelin-starred Café China in Midtown Manhattan specializes in fiery Sichuan cuisine, China Blue in Tribeca offers the more delicate salty-sweet flavors of traditional Shanghai-style cuisine. And China Blue has also captured the attention of Michelin reviewers, who have complimented the restaurateurs for bringing “an elegant taste of Shanghai” to Tribeca. Yiming and Xian opened their third restaurant, Birds of a Feather, in trendy Williamsburg in April. It also specializes in fiery Sichuan fare, but with a contemporary twist.
THE ESSENCE OF THE CULTURE
Yiming grew up in Harbin, in China’s northeast, but came overseas to study. She loves photography, and literature, and has a particular fascination with early 20th-century Chinese culture. One of her favorite periods of Chinese literature is the Republic of China period from 1912 to 1949, which started at the end of China’s last dynasty, the Qing, and ended when the communists seized power.

By the 1930s, Chinese women were still wearing traditional Qing-style cheongsam or qipao dresses, but the style was slowly being influenced by European and American fashions. Yiming admires the fashions and the feel of that time. She personally owns around 30 high-end cheongsam, some vintage and some she actually designed herself. The essence of China’s philosophy in the 1930s also stirs something inside her, the collision of East and West that was effecting gradual cultural change. And this melding of cultures was especially apparent in old Shanghai as it became a metropolitan city.

NO COMPROMISE
Despite the countless difficulties associated with starting restaurants from scratch, the process of establishing themselves as restaurateurs has been a happy one for Yiming and Xian. It was very important to them that, like their first restaurant, China Blue also serve authentic Chinese cuisine. Xian and Yiming believe that authentic Chinese cuisine is representative of China’s traditional culture. China Blue serves a vast array of traditional Shanghainese cuisine and a small number of dishes from other provinces. Xian remembers worrying when they opened their first restaurant in Midtown that perhaps Americans would be unaccustomed to authentic Chinese cuisine. But his concerns were quickly overturned by a number of high-profile rave reviews shortly after Café China opened its doors in 2011. “There was a lot pressure,” he said. “A lot of the big chefs advised us that traditional cuisine wouldn’t work, because American-style Chinese food is something Americans are familiar with and the production costs are relatively low.” Today, their three restaurants often attract Westerners who have traveled to China and can order food in Chinese. Some of their Western employees also speak Chinese and really love Eastern culture. “I’m very proud of our team,” Yiming said.

Their team has grown to between 200 and 300 full- and part-time staff members between their three restaurants. Xian believes that creating a good environment is so important for their staff. “From the perspective of being a good person, a boss should be considerate of others. A good worker brings a restaurant far more value than their wages, so we should value our employees.”
ATTENTION TO DETAIL
Housed in a landmarked neo-Flemish building with an outdoor dining area that opens during the warmer months, China Blue’s high ceilings and colorful decor give the space an airy feeling. The Hudson River is a little under two blocks away from the restaurant’s Watts Street location, which is also not far from the Holland Tunnel. Yiming designed all aspects of China Blue. The atmosphere is humming, and the setting is nostalgic. Antiques picked up at flea markets and placed here and there help reconnect diners to an age well before smartphones. Yiming paired blue-green walls with painted exposed brick and dark wood floors, producing an exotic vibe that seems to change at each hour of the day. The extensive art-deco-style bar in the center serves a variety of liquors and cocktails. From the wooden barstools, warm orange-yellow lampshades and an old gramophone catch the eye, another reminder of how people used to socialize. The menu is extensive, brimming with delicate Shanghainese soups, a large assortment of dim sum, and many traditional forms of fish, crab, chicken, lamb, and pork. Combined with the subtle decor, great food, and warm ambience, China Blue is nothing short of East meets West, a perfectly satisfying alignment of tradition and modernity.

MIDDLE KINGDOM PORCELAIN Carrying the Literati Tradition Forward
English text by Sarah Matheson Chinese text by Janet Qiu Photos by Middle Kingdom
C
hinese literati (wenren) were always appreciated for their exquisite taste, valuable possessions, and the extensive culture that they left to prosperity. Co-founder of Middle Kingdom porcelain, Jia Bo is a man who appreciates the cultivation of the arts in the Chinese literati tradition, and the different ways artistry could be expressed—through scholar’s objects, poetry, painting, and self-improvement. When he first arrived in the United States in the early 1990s, he felt conflicted when he realized that the essence of China’s literati tradition was not commonly recognized in the West. "I attended a gathering and found a phenomenon: When people heard someone speak of Chinese people, they would say Chinese are a very hardworking ethnic group. But when someone brought up French or British people, they would say they have very good taste.”

A graduate of the renowned China Academy of Fine Art in Hangzhou, Jia Bo had been working at the National Museum on Tiananmen Square in Beijing as a professional painter and exhibition designer. His American peers’ casual comments about his nationality sparked something inside him. “At that time I just thought, through the education I received, I know Chinese people are a very cultured, very tasteful ethnic group. What should I do to remind them of the traditions of elegance and beauty that China possesses?” Porcelain and silk were the first two mediums that came to mind. Though Jia Bo had not worked with ceramics before, he decided he would create a luxury Chinese porcelain brand, and in 1998 he and his wife, Alison Alten, co-founded Middle Kingdom.
ROOTS IN CHINA
Middle Kingdom’s porcelains are handcrafted by artisans at the company’s modern facilities in Jingdezhen, a prefecture-level city in Jiangxi province, China. Home of the imperial kilns of the Ming and Qing dynasties, Jingdezhen is still China’s “porcelain capital,” boasting a 1,700-year-long history of pottery production. “We started Middle Kingdom with an idea to create a Chinese brand on par with other international brands; in short, to put China on the design map. We wanted to change Westerners’ minds about China being a source of cheap goods and labor, to remind them of China’s traditions of elegance and beauty,” he said.
COLLECTORS’ PIECES
Middle Kingdom’s craftsmanship and design has captured the attention of institutional collectors. The Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the world’s largest museum of decorative arts and design, is collecting Middle Kingdom’s pieces as signifiers of late 20th-century ceramic brand production, as is the Baltimore Museum of Art in the United States. Seeking to update the styles and aesthetics of some of the greatest Chinese dynasties, such as the Song and the Ming, with their own modern interpretations, Middle Kingdom’s work is slowly changing to incorporate a more international feel, but the emphasis on strong, clean design remains.

The entire process, from designing a piece to getting it into production, can take several months to a year. After a prototype is approved, Middle Kingdom artisans use the slip casting method to pour liquid clay into molds. When the clay is nearly dry, the product is removed from the mold, trimmed, and cleaned, and a glaze is applied. The piece is trimmed once more before being fired in the kiln.

Alison have sought out other ideas and inspirations. “I can’t create an international look by myself, since I have my particular perspective and education, but with the collaboration of Western artists I can move in this direction,” Jia Bo says. Middle Kingdom now has four European and two American designers in its stable. Looking back, Jia Bo says he might have picked a different material, but he has learned so much about the culture of ceramic production and its history. “I don’t know that there’s another material that would have expressed our original idea of updating Chinese design as well as porcelain does.”

t the heart of old Beijing are traditional Chinese hutong neighborhoods, formed by meandering streets, crisscrossing alleyways, and lines of traditional siheyuan, or courtyard residences. To breathe new life into one such historic residence in Beijing’s East District, Arch Studio’s architects transformed the interior of the building into a contemporary teahouse while retaining elements of the traditional design. Judging by the arrangement of the wood in the original structure and the size of the bricks, the architects determined that the north wing of the siheyuan predated the Qing Dynasty, making it at least 350 years old.

Encapsulated by wood, glass, and bamboo and decorated with eccentric, wooden benches, the hallway blurs the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces.
Beijing’s courtyard residences were first developed as early as the Liao Dynasty almost 1,000 years ago, and generations of Beijing residents have lived and prospered in these buildings. But over the centuries, many siheyuan have slowly fallen into increasing disrepair and dilapidation. Since the mid-20th century, large portions of these traditional neighborhoods have been demolished to make way for modern apartment complexes. The gradual disappearance of these cultural relics has prompted a number of local developers to repurpose or renovate the structures. And so vital centers of Chinese architectural history continue to withstand the test of time and the endless economic pressure. The architecture of the traditional structure had to be carefully balanced against the demands of contemporary urban living. The old was thus harmonized with the new, the exterior with the interior, and the natural with the synthetic to build a sleek, yet comfortable space for conversation and relaxation.

The “si” in siheyuan means “four” and refers to the four sides of north, south, east, and west. Rather than building a courtyard behind the home, the Chinese traditionally situated an open-air courtyard right in the center of the structure, sheltered from the elements on four sides. Chinese architects traditionally built these residential complexes guided by the basic principle of having a strong, sturdy exterior enclosing a spacious, open interior. In this way, these buildings resemble a square with a garden in its center. This verdant center was traditionally a tranquil space landscaped with a balanced myriad of flora and stone that complemented the building’s gray exterior walls. In the spirit of the traditional Chinese courtyard, the architects incorporated three refreshing oases of bamboo and warm sunlight into the modern design, thus providing each tearoom with its own small wellspring of scenery.
Stark contrast between block colors and unique textures blend with warm ambient interior lighting and natural light in the tearooms.
In designing the corridors and walkways within the teahouse, Arch Studio employed the winding, curved designs typical of traditional Chinese architecture, which values a more circular aesthetic over a linear one. This design technique also has a functional purpose in separating different spaces of that building into different tearooms. Glass barrier walls and wooden, tree-like columns pervade the interior, further blurring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors, and separating the public and more secluded spaces. From the outside, the new teahouse appears modest, with little differentiating it from the other aging siheyuan in the area. But closer inspection hints at the modernity that lies within. A smooth glass door at the end of a narrow entrance corridor is the first indication that inside waits an entirely different environment, where one discovers a creative and pleasing blend of the traditional and the modern.

n renovating a traditional Victorian house in Toronto, the design studio +tongtong sought to build a more modern and spacious home while remaining true to the vernacular of the neighborhood. The designers focused on two major features—openness and light— in transforming the structure, named the Zn House. To increase the flow of natural light into the home, they inserted a vertical shaft through the home and topped it with large skylights. With this addition, warm sunlight now illuminates every f loor of the home and also animates the zinc ceiling installation above the kitchen. Principal designer John Tong says this is the part of the design he cherishes the most: “I really embrace the slot between the two f loors. It turns the second-floor hallway into a bridge that connects all of the floors. This is key to bringing light down to the first floor.” In designing the exterior of the home, they united a darker palette with large glazed doors and windows, which bathe the home in natural light, create a more modern look, and allow for pleasant views of the outdoor scenery. The integration of gray and black zinc panels throughout the interior and exterior of the home merges the more traditional aspects of the home with the newer design. In renovating the third-floor bedroom, they replaced the gable with an expansive triangular window offering relaxing views of the neighborhood and the downtown skyline. Custom triangular blinds shade the room and retract into a millwork unit when not in use. In the kitchen, the playful flames of the vent-free ethanol fireplace add a nice touch to the dining room ambience. The designers extended the gray millwork of the kitchen into the dining and living rooms to create continuity.

Overall, the designers employed a cool palette of grays, whites, and blacks complemented by sparse, yet effective bursts of vibrant color. Ultraviolet rays from the sun, salt from seawater, and bleach from the pool can all cause outdoor furniture to corrode, so selecting high quality, well-crafted pieces is essential. For a comfortable outdoor space, the fine workmanship of a well-designed sofa and dinette set are paramount. Ambient lighting for after dark and splendid decor will add the finishing touches.

A beautiful estate inspired by the 17th-century Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte has come onto the market in Pasadena, California, for the first time in more than six decades. The Cravens Estate, situated on “Millionaire’s Row” along tree-lined Orange Grove Boulevard and Madeline Drive, was completed in 1930 for John Smith Cravens and Mildred Mary Cravens at a reported cost of $1.25 million. 25 years later, it was still famous for being the most expensive home ever built in Pasadena, according to a Los Angeles Times article dated February 6, 1955. Mr. Cravens was the first elected president of the Edison Electric Co., one of the predecessors of Southern California Edison Co., and Mrs. Cravens was the daughter of George S. Myers, a cofounder of the Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company. Mr. and Mrs. Cravens were very involved with the Pasadena community and were generous donors to local charities and churches. The architect for the Cravens Estate was San Francisco-based Lewis P. Hobart (1873–1954), who studied architecture in Rome and Paris, notably at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1901 to 1903. Due to his knowledge of concrete and steel construction, he was commissioned to design many buildings in San Francisco after the great earthquake and fire of 1906, including the Grace Episcopal Cathedral in Nob Hill. The Cravens Estate was his only commission in Southern California. After Mr. and Mrs. Cravens passed away in the late 1940s, the estate passed through several owners and some parts were sold separately. It was donated by Simon G. Zervos, an industrialist and bakery owner, to the American Red Cross in 1962, and for the last 55 years has served as the headquarters for the San Gabriel Pomona Valley American Red Cross. Honored as the Pasadena Showcase House of Design in 2010, the Cravens Estate underwent a partial restoration and renovation by many talented and well-known local designers. Today, it sits on an acre

TIMELESS CRAFTSMANSHIP
The architecture of the Cravens Estate was inspired by the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte, located 34 miles southeast of Paris. The château was designed by Louis XIV’s principal architect, Louis le Vau (1612–1670), and completed in 1661. The design of the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte was considered innovative when it was built and was also the inspiration for Versailles. It became the foundation of French architecture for the next 150 years. The Cravens Estate bears a wealth of stunning original architectural features. Glorious golden mahogany and French walnut paneling throughout the 19,970-square-foot home was installed by European craftsmen when the house was built and has stood the test of time, as have the beautiful marble floors, gold-plated fixtures, and intricately carved moldings coated with gold leaf. Designated a Cultural Heritage Landmark by the City of Pasadena in 1971, the Cravens Estate was cited as “one of the few remaining mansions representative of homes in an era when Pasadena acquired its international reputation as the finest and wealthiest residential community in this country.” Entering the home’s grand foyer validates that reputation. Hand-painted f loor-to-ceiling murals display pristine views of the grounds at the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte in France and are bordered by exquisite dark wood. The paintings were painstakingly cleaned and restored during renovations for the 2010 Pasadena Showcase House of Design. The coat closet is large enough for around 80 jackets, testimony to the home’s rich history of entertaining. The original butler’s pantry was converted into a working kitchen by the Red Cross, and was updated into a luxury chef’s kitchen during the Showcase in 2010. The 2010 renovations also revealed that the

formerly grayish floor tiles were actually a stunning turquoise blue, and in such incredible condition that local historians swooned, according to a Red Cross volunteer. A walk-in silver safe at the end of the kitchen is additional testimony to the enormous wealth of the previous owners. The home exudes a spacious serenity with ceilings more than 14 feet high throughout and floor-to-ceiling windows. Large French doors lining the front and back of the home provide pleasant transitions to the landscaped terraces and gardens outside. HISTORY OF PHILANTHROPY
The Red Cross has been evaluating its real estate holdings to ensure they align with the organization’s humanitarian mission. It was through this review that it decided to sell the Cravens Estate in Pasadena. Josie Tong and Gretchen Seager of Sotheby’s International Realty Beverly Hills Brokerage are the exclusive listing agents for the property. Josie has been a Red Cross donor for more than 35 years, starting when she graduated from college in Taiwan. After she moved to Los Angeles, a friend introduced her to the Red Cross Santa Monica Chapter. She started by volunteering on the planning committee for the annual Red Tie Gala, and eventually became co-chair of the gala and joined the board. “The more I learned about the Red Cross and what they did in addition to disaster relief, the more passionate I became about their humanitarian efforts,” she said. Josie has since joined the American Red Cross Tiffany Circle, a group of women philanthropists who are committed to the mission of the Red Cross and are willing to donate at least $10,000 a year. She became the chair of the Tiffany Circle Los Angeles Region this year. The American Red Cross has hosted many events for its donors, volunteers, and staff at the Cravens Estate. It serves as the command center for the first-aid stations at the annual Rose Parade. It is also a favorite site for filming and community gatherings. “My partner Gretchen Seager and I are very honored to be the listing agents and will be donating 100 percent of our commissions and marketing expenses back to the Red Cross,” Josie said. As the Cravens Estate is currently configured, it has seven bedrooms, four full bathrooms, five half bathrooms, six fireplaces, and garage bays for 10 vehicles. The asking price is $10.5 million.

Zadart, headquartered in Bellevue where the Greater Seattle Chinese community resides, is a leader in the exotic car rental business, not only because of their full range of exotic/luxury cars, but also because of their excellent service, which has won car lovers’ respect and trust. The founder of the company had turned the phase “Art of Zad” into “Zadart”, which means “The Art of Speed & Power”, and at the same time defines the posture of the brand and highlights the personality of charging forward. With the support from his family, Johnny Netz, an 18-year-old young man from Bellevue, started Zadart. A year later when he was admitted to a prestigious university in California, his father’s good friend JT was invited to join the firm as the CSO (Chief Strategic Officer), with a mission to develop the brand and help build the business. JT is a graduate of Harvard Business School with over 35 years of senior management experience in building multi-million dollar national and global brands and businesses. He is himself an exotic car collector. Jonny, JT and members of Team Zadart are bringing their passion to their business, and sharing their pride and joy with car lovers all over Washington, the Pacific Northwest and the US. One thing that distinguishes Zadart from other car rental companies is that Zadart only rents the top range of exotic/luxury cars, and has created Club Veloce, their motorsports and lifestyles club for serious car enthusiasts to join and mingle. This has further anchored Zadart’s leadership position in the trade. Nowadays a car is not just for transportation, and in some cases it is a symbol of personal pride or corporate identity. Not only is it essential for special personal events such as wedding or graduation, it is often used by companies for corporate outings, marketing and entertainment programs. To many people, purchasing a luxury car is not that cost-effective; other than the high price of the car, there is also the relative high cost of maintaining, garaging and insuring a luxury car. In renting your choice of exotic or luxury car from Zadart, you have none of these expenses or concerns. So, why buy one exotic car when you can drive them all at Zadart!
