The

GOLDENguide North East daily living guide for over 50s

www.goldenguide.org.uk Welcome to the new Golden Guide for Newcastle and North Tyneside over 50s. We were delighted with the response to our first edition last year—it was a hit everywhere it went.

So this year it has been a pleasure to seek out more useful hints and tips – from ways to reduce energy bills to brushing up your IT skills, with all kinds of social, sporty and educational activities in between!

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust NHS North Tyneside Clinical Commissioning Group

Plenty of health and care information is always a priority, so we are pleased to welcome two new partners. North Tyneside CCG found the guide invaluable for Practice Nurses and are keen to spread the word, so they are helping fund extra copies this year. Infrastructure North are also raising awareness about their help for older and vulnerable people at home. Their schemes give priority support in emergencies and they can advise on energy use and safety too, see their feature on pages 48—51. More new services are springing up in response to need. Some of these encourage us to get active and stay healthy, while others offer support to keep loneliness at bay and help us maintain a happy and independent life. You will find befriending and friendship schemes, help with getting out and about and help at home with daily tasks. And if you’re interested in improving the quality of life and healthcare for older people—contact the Elders Council, or Healthwatch and make your voice heard! Finally a special thanks to all who sponsored space in the guide. Their ads are full of extra useful information—so please have a look and see what they can offer. Happy reading! LIBRARIES Visit the library to see what’s on. Events may include author visits, family or local history talks, health events, crafts, creative writing and reading groups. You can borrow ordinary, large print, audio books, DVDs, CDs (Newcastle only), music sets (North Tyneside only), and download ebooks and emagazines as well as access premium online resources at home. Library membership and internet access is free and you can learn to use a computer at one of their Techy Tea Parties or Silver Surfer classes. North Tyneside has a mobile library and both services run a home delivery service for housebound customers in partnership with the Royal Voluntary Service. Ring for more information, or visit the library website. Here you can browse the collections online and also check, reserve and renew your loans.

Note on Internet Help There are many websites listed in the Golden Guide. If you have no internet access, go along to your local library where staff will help you use their computers.

VOLUNTEERING Volunteering is a good way to search for employment or to retrain. It is also a rewarding way to support a worthwhile cause, meet people, and have structure to your day. Support and training is offered by all organisations and they will all be glad to welcome you. Opportunities have included work with young people, disabled people, animals, heritage, befriending, gardening, admin work, research projects and trusteeships.

WORKING AFTER RETIREMENT

www.gov.uk/plan-retirementincome/working-past-statepension-age If you wish you can choose to carry on working while still taking your State Pension, or defer claiming it to be paid a larger amount later on. Income from working in retirement is taxable at the usual rates, along with income from your State Pension, personal or occupational pension and from certain taxable benefits. Your net income may increase, because at state pension age you no longer pay National Insurance contributions. You are still entitled to the national living wage for any paid work you do. Consult the Pension Service to find out how earnings after pension age may affect benefits such as Pension Credit. If you’re already getting the State Pension you can cancel this if you get the chance to do some work that would pay enough for your needs. Your State Pension will stop until you choose to claim it again. However you can only do this once. See also pages 90-94 Pensions and Benefits.

Keep warm, stay healthy You may not realise it, but living in a cold, damp home can affect your health in a number of ways. Each winter in England and Wales, one older person dies every seven minutes because of the cold.* (*Age UK)

Living in a cold home: • Weakens your immune system, making you prone to other illnesses. • Raises blood pressure and increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. • Can lead to hypothermia.

Avoid the risks by keeping the room you spend most time in at between 18C and 21C (64F to 70F). Visit our website at www.infrastructurenorth.co.uk for information on gas, water and electricity safety and top tips on staying warm while keeping your energy costs low. HOME SECURITY Emergency calls 999 For any situation which has become dangerous or where a crime has just been, or is about to be, committed. Northumbria Police 101 www.northumbria.police.uk Use this number for all nonemergency concerns, enquiries and information.

SCAMS Put the phone down on anyone offering insurance, PPI rebates or council tax regradings and never give your bank or credit card details over the phone. Never discuss anything private—just ring off, you’re not being rude it’s a scam. Don’t respond to letters or calls offering prizes, holidays or investments. If you are asked to phone a number to claim a prize— don’t ring, it’s usually a premium rate number and the prize is worthless.

Their Crime Prevention team advise on making your home secure through locks, lights, alarms and sensible precautions.

See page 98 Consumer Advice and page 87 Personal alarm systems.

BOGUS CALLERS

0800 032 7777

Never allow unexpected callers into your home, ask them to call another time and have someone with you. Don’t respond to doorstep offers of building work, hardware products or fish. It’s likely the price will be much too high, or there will be a problem later. Instead always check local prices and buy from reputable firms.

MENTAL HEALTH A good first point of contact for a mental health concern (e.g. depression, memory problems, anxiety) is your GP or other health professional. If appropriate you will be referred to your local Community Mental Health team who may be able to visit you at home. Counselling or talking treatments are helpful and could be all that’s needed.

A DIFFERENT CONCEPT IN DEMENTIA CARE

AT EOTHEN HOMES WE ARE COMMITTED TO PROVIDING EXCELLENT CARE WITH CHRISTIAN VALUES. Our home in

Wallsend is different to other residential homes offering dementia care. Space and room for residents to move around and enjoy life freely has played a central part of the building’s design and daily life is not made up of routine and tasks but allows people to get up and eat and drink when and where they want. In other words it is just like home. As well as our specialist dementia care facility, we have homes in Whitley Bay and Gosforth which offer 24 hour permanent residential care as well as short term respite and day care for the elderly.

Please feel free to call in to any of our homes for a cup of tea, a chat and a look around at any time. Wallsend Miller Way NE28 8EL 0191 259 8000 Whitley Bay Park Gardens NE26 2TX 0191 297 0707 Gosforth 45 Elmfield Road NE3 4BB 0191 213 0707

YOUR home or Care Home? You do have a choice... We are Europe’s largest live-in care provider. Our expert care workers live in your home with you, 24-7 as a companion, a carer and a friend. Get the care you need, want and deserve, in the comfort of your own home. We offer a genuine alternative to residential care homes. Our mission is to give elderly and vulnerable people the opportunity to remain safely in their own homes by providing 24 hour, live-in care. Each carer is matched to you based on personality, hobbies and interests as well as overall care needs. This means there’s some common ground from day one and genuine friendships blossom. Maybe you’re cared for by a family member who just needs a break, or you need help getting back on your feet after a hospital stay. Finding Out About Care IF SOMEONE DEPENDS ON YOU, YOU CAN DEPEND ON US

Are you a carer? Becoming a carer can happen at any time and can be ongoing, or temporary. You might not think of yourself as a carer because you feel that you are doing what any person in ‘your shoes’ would do. You might also think that, unless you are claiming Carer’s Allowance you should not describe yourself as a carer. In fact, we define a carer as someone who provides unpaid practical and emotional support to a family member, partner, friend or neighbour who, through illness, disability, substance misuse or mental health issues, would be unable to manage without that person.

05 MONEY MATTERS If you are close to retiring or have already retired, you will be keeping an eye on your financial position. Careful planning and the right advice will help you achieve the best income you can. Use our suggestions here to find contacts for specialist advice and information.

HELP WITH PENSIONS State Pension age is currently 65 for men and for women it is increasing gradually to 65 up to November 2018. In April 2016 the Single Tier State Pension system came into effect. The Additional State Pension has been removed, but the flat rate is higher. It only applies to those who reached state pension age on or after 6 April 2016. For people older than this the system of basic flat-rate pension plus Additional State Pension remains.

90

What you get depends on the number of years of National Insurance contributions you have paid. You may be eligible to buy missing years to boost the total. Or you may qualify for NI credits if you were unable to pay contributions e.g. whilst raising a family or as a carer. Even if you have other entitlements, or an occupational or personal pension you may still qualify for Pension Credit to top up the total. For an estimate of what you are entitled to contact:
