The

GOLDENguide North East daily living guide for over 50s

www.goldenguide.org.uk Hello and welcome to the latest Golden Guide for Newcastle and North Tyneside. It’s been a busy year seeking out contacts, networks and services to keep us all in touch and enjoying life. The word is out that it’s healthy— and lots of fun to get involved!

These days we often hear about the benefits of activity and socialising for our general health and wellbeing, so we are delighted to include more information on activities—especially outdoors— than ever before. Look out for walks, cycling, kayaking and even surfboarding for over 50s! There are wonderful ways to get close to nature too—volunteer for conservation work, take up gardening, join a bird, bat or badger watch, or go dolphin spotting off the coast. Health support is always an important theme in the guide. This year you will find information on the new Care Navigator service in GP practices, notes on how to reduce the risk of falls, befriending services and many more local support groups for various health conditions. Thanks for contributions here from our partners North Tyneside CCG and TyneHealth. Lastly, please remember to take in our sponsors’ ad pages too. They are always relevant and give more detail on their services than we have space for. They will be pleased to answer any queries you have, or signpost you to a suitable contact to help you out. If you have feedback or comments, please get in touch at the address overleaf or through the website at www.goldenguide.org.uk Heather Alabaster Editor

WORKING AFTER RETIREMENT

www.gov.uk/plan-retirementincome/working-past-statepension-age If you wish you can choose to carry on working while still taking your State Pension, or defer claiming it to be paid a larger amount later on. Income from working in retirement is taxable at the usual rates, along with income from your State Pension, personal or occupational pension and from certain taxable benefits. Your net income may increase, because at state pension age you no longer pay National Insurance contributions. You are still entitled to the national living wage for any paid work you do.

42

Consult the Pension Service to find out how earnings after pension age may affect benefits such as Pension Credit. If you’re already getting the State Pension you can cancel this if you get the chance to do some work that would pay enough for your needs. Your State Pension will stop until you choose to claim it again. However, you can only do this once. See also pages 96-100 Pensions and Benefits. Keep warm, stay healthy You may not realise it, but living in a cold, damp home can affect your health in a number of ways. Each winter in England and Wales, one older person dies every seven minutes because of the cold.* (*Age UK)

Living in a cold home: • Weakens your immune system, making you prone to other illnesses. • Raises blood pressure and increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. • Can lead to hypothermia.

Avoid the risks by keeping the room you spend most time in at between 18C and 21C (64F to 70F). Visit our website at www.infrastructurenorth.co.uk for information on gas, water and electricity safety and top tips on staying warm while keeping your energy costs low.

HOME SECURITY Emergency calls 999 For any situation which has become dangerous or where a crime has just been, or is about to be, committed. Northumbria Police 101 www.northumbria.police.uk Use this number for all nonemergency concerns, enquiries and information. Their Crime Prevention team can advise on making your home secure through locks, lights, alarms and sensible precautions.

SCAMS Put the phone down on anyone offering insurance, PPI rebates or council tax regradings and never give your bank or credit card details over the phone. Never discuss anything private—just ring off, you’re not being rude it’s a scam. Don’t respond to letters or calls offering prizes, holidays or investments. If you are asked to phone a number to claim a prize— don’t ring, it’s usually a premium rate number and the prize is worthless. See page 104 Consumer Advice. Tyne & Wear Fire & Rescue Service

BOGUS CALLERS

999, emergencies

Never allow unexpected callers into your home, ask them to call another time and have someone with you. Don’t respond to doorstep offers of building work, hardware products or produce. It’s likely the price will be much too high, or there will be a problem later. Instead always check local prices and buy from reputable firms.

www.nhs.uk Detailed health and social care information includes lists of local hospitals, doctors, dentists, opticians, pharmacists. Online services for participating GP practices and pharmacies include booking appointments, ordering repeat prescriptions and an e-referral service to book some specialist hospital appointments. If you have no access to the internet, ring NHS 111 for information.

www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/ppc Most NHS treatment is free for over 60s, including prescriptions and sight tests. Where there are costs, e.g. for glasses, dental treatment and travel to and from hospital, you may apply for assistance if you are on a low income or in receipt of certain benefits.

SIGN North Tyneside www.sign-nt.co.uk If you need practical help or emotional support and guidance this network of information providers can put you in touch with the right organisations. They link to local health and social care services, as well as those provided by North Tyneside Council. The Golden Guide is a member of the SIGN network too.

Prescription Prepayment Cards (PPC) 0300 330 1341 www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/ppc If you have to pay for more than three prescriptions within three months, or more than twelve within twelve months, it may be cheaper to buy a PPC. Community Falls Service? For those at high risk of falling, Age UK North Tyneside can offer the opportunity to join in a 12 week strength and balance class.

The Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service will help to identify those who are most at risk of falling, and offer specialist training and advice to help prevent falls in the home.

Not all patients who fall require an ambulance - some simply require support to get them back up on their feet. The North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust will be able to assess where a patient has fallen but is not injured, and may dispatch responders from North Tyneside Council’s Care Call Service. A DIFFERENT CONCEPT IN DEMENTIA CARE

AT EOTHEN HOMES WE ARE COMMITTED TO PROVIDING EXCELLENT CARE WITH CHRISTIAN VALUES. Our home in

Wallsend is different to other residential homes offering dementia care. Space and room for residents to move around and enjoy life freely has played a central part of the building’s design and daily life is not made up of routine and tasks but allows people to get up and eat and drink when and where they want. In other words it is just like home. As well as our specialist dementia care facility, we have homes in Whitley Bay and Gosforth which offer 24 hour permanent residential care as well as short term respite and day care for the elderly.

Please feel free to call in to any of our homes for a cup of tea, a chat and a look around at any time. Wallsend Miller Way NE28 8EL 0191 259 8000 Whitley Bay Park Gardens NE26 2TX 0191 297 0707 Gosforth 45 Elmfield Road NE3 4BB 0191 213 0707

STAYING AT HOME WITH HELP ADULT SOCIAL CARE SERVICE If you have a health condition or disability the right kind of support and suitable modifications at home can make all the difference to your wellbeing. Contact Adult Social Care whether you expect to be eligible for help or not, as they can advise about organisations that might be able to help, and things you can do to prevent your needs from increasing, or make them easier to manage. Their services include short-term support if you need help to live independently after a health crisis or accident, (sometimes called Reablement), and also longer-term support for those who need it. There are charges for long-term support, and you may have to pay part or all of the cost depending on your income and savings. If you have complex needs, with a primary need for healthcare, you may be eligible to have all of your support funded by the NHS.

IF SOMEONE DEPENDS ON YOU, YOU CAN DEPEND ON US Are you a carer? Becoming a carer can happen to anyone at any time and can be ongoing, or temporary. You might not think of yourself as a carer because you feel that you are doing what any person in ‘your shoes’ would do. You might also think that, unless you are claiming Carer’s Allowance you should not describe yourself as a carer. In fact, we define a carer as someone who provides unpaid practical and emotional support to a family member, partner, friend or neighbour who, through illness, disability, substance misuse or mental health issues, would be unable to manage without that person.

05 MONEY MATTERS If you are close to retiring or have already retired, you will be keeping an eye on your financial position. Careful planning and the right advice will help you achieve the best income you can. Use our suggestions here to find contacts for specialist advice and information.

HELP WITH PENSIONS State Pension age is currently 65 for men and for women it is increasing gradually to 65 up to November 2018. In April 2016 the Single Tier State Pension system came into effect. The Additional State Pension has been removed, but the flat rate is higher. It only applies to those who reached state pension age on or after 6 April 2016. For people older than this the system of basic flat-rate pension plus Additional State Pension remains.

96

What you get depends on the number of years of National Insurance contributions you have paid. You may be eligible to buy missing years to boost the total. Or you may qualify for NI credits if you were unable to pay contributions e.g. whilst raising a family or as a carer. Even if you have other entitlements, or an occupational or personal pension you may still qualify for Pension Credit to top up the total. For an estimate of what you are entitled to contact:
