With awareness of mental health issues becoming more widespread, there is information about a range of support available in Northumberland. There are helplines, courses, welcoming support groups and individual help to get you through.

It’s also thought that staying fit and active often helps keep depression at bay—so look out for new activities too - especially outdoors with a large range of walks, wildlife, gardening, conservation work or just trips out to keep you busy and engaged. There are many opportunities for volunteering outdoors and indoors too.

Extra information on starting a business or becoming self-employed ties in nicely with this year’s special feature on Retirement on page 97. Here we take a look at planning for this new phase, and discover some of the pitfalls if you don’t!

WALKING GROUPS Walking is an excellent way to build your fitness, improving overall health and stamina and keeping you trim. It can be very sociable, walking and chatting helps you stay in touch and can lift your mood.

Walking the dog is very good for both you and the dog. It is also sociable dogs are a good talking point! Or if you don’t have your own dog —there are plenty of opportunities for walking other people’s dogs instead.

Also look out for special interest walks e.g. Northumberland Wildlife Trust’s birds or wildlife guided walks and self-led trails, National Trust walks and some led by Talking Matters designed to help people with mental health conditions such as depression.

Here is some advice on how to look after yourself well and access the most appropriate service for your condition.

PRACTISE GOOD SELF-CARE

– keep a well-stocked medicines cabinet at home and treat a large range of common conditions without needing to use the NHS.

ASK A PHARMACIST – they’re highly-trained health experts on everything from colds to long-term conditions.

CONTACT YOUR GP – many GPs can offer advice over

the phone and can arrange referral to a hospital specialist if you need it.

CALL NHS 111 – if you need medical help fast, but it’s not

life threatening or you’re not sure where to go, a 111 advisor will assess you and direct you to the best-placed service in your area. NHS 111 is available 24/7 and calls are free from landlines and mobile phones.

IF IT’S URGENT – use your local urgent care centre at

PHARMACY Many pharmacies give healthy living advice and support with self care. They advise on minor ailments, can review your medicines and explain side effects. If you receive free prescriptions they may be able to treat you without having to see the doctor first. They offer cholesterol, blood pressure and glucose tests, flu jabs, help with weight management, smoking and many other conditions.

PODIATRY Good foot care helps keep you steady on your feet to prevent falls. The service deal with toenails, skin problems, foot pain, or help if you have diabetes, arthritis or medication concerns. Your GP can refer you or else advise on making an appointment.

How To Retire In Northumberland

IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY TO SAVE. The sooner you start, the less you have to save each month and the more it will grow over time. If you have left it later you can still save into your pension and get tax relief up to age 75.

DON’T GO IT ALONE. Whether your affairs are straightforward or more complex, once you’ve established the basics it’s a good idea to discuss your options and check the calculations. The Pensionwise team and the Money Advice Service are experts and can explain the pros and cons for free.

STICK TO YOUR PLAN. Having worked out what you’ll have to live on, (including money for unforeseen expenses), stay with it. Common mistakes are spending too freely early on, or giving too much to your children. Keep an eye on costs and plan how to take your pension cash carefully.

MAKE A WILL. A will means you can leave your money and assets as you wish, and avoid disputes.

Without one, the Law decides, and things may not be dispersed as you expect, e.g. your spouse will not necessarily get everything, and an unmarried partner will get nothing at all.

Even if you long to retire, flexible working helps you adjust to retirement gradually, giving you time to acclimatise and begin reshaping your life. Use this time to think about new interests you’ll enjoy and keep up or develop skills you may wish to use to earn part-time income.

We know we should eat healthy food, give up smoking and not drink too much alcohol.

Remember regular check-ups for sight, hearing and teeth are important too. Where there are costs for NHS treatment help may be available if you are eligible.

STAY FIT AND ACTIVE.

MENTAL WELLBEING.

Make exercise a key part of your life. No matter how late you start you will see benefits e.g. improved energy, muscle and bone strength, flexibility and balance. It helps with high blood pressure, weight control, insomnia and reduces falls. It lifts your mood, so you feel happier and more confident too.

Sometimes retirement is unexpectedly difficult.

It may be hard to relax if you’re not used to having time to spend on yourself. Or perhaps you feel you’ve lost your identity, or your social life has shrunk, or your lifetime of skills and knowledge are wasted.

There is a wide range of physical activities in Northumberland, both indoors and outdoors.

Health Trainers can advise on these and suggest something suitable. There are also sessions geared for those with particular health conditions.

Creating a routine for your day or week is an effective way to restore structure and a sense of purpose. For emotional health it’s important to find new friends and make the effort to keep in touch with old ones.

MOVINGFORWARD A recent American survey* asked 1,500 retirees how happy they were in retirement.

They found that 66% of those who engaged in five to nine activities a week were very satisfied. Only 52% were happy with less than five. They concluded that “The busier you are, the happier you’ll be”.

BUILD A ROUTINE. Consider a spread of activities made up of things you already like, plus at least one new activity to keep you learning—staying mentally active is just as important as physical fitness.

Always include something sociable, even if it’s just coffee with a neighbour. Men can find this harder than women, but it’s important to try. Friends and acquaintances replace lost work relationships, help keep us in touch and are an increasingly useful support network as we age.

Hundreds of hobbies, sports, clubs and classes—outdoor and indoor—are listed in the Golden Guide, and socialising often happens along the way. See pages 6-36 and also 72 and 77 for Befriending schemes and more specialist groups.

VOLUNTEERING. Helping others is an excellent way to make your time really count and give back to the community. Most charities need volunteers, so your effort will certainly be valued. You will be using existing skills and you may be surprised at what other talents you develop as you go along.

WORKING OR CARING. If you have decided to carry on earning part time or have caring responsibilities for a partner or grandchildren —still try to make time to enjoy healthy, fun activities amongst your own friends. It will keep you bright and boost your morale.

YOU AND YOUR PARTNER. The American survey also asked retirees about their relationship with their spouse or partner. They found ‘An impressive 95% of respondents said their relationship ... either improved or stayed the same in retirement compared to before.’ So if you privately worry that you and your partner will get on each other’s nerves in retirement because of too much we time, don’t!

HELP WITH PENSIONS State Pension age is currently 65 for men and for women it increases gradually to 65 between April 2016 and November 2018.

In April 2016 the Single Tier State Pension came into effect. The Additional State Pension has been removed but the flat-rate is higher. It only applies to those who reached state pension age on or after 6 April 2016. For people older than this the system of basic flat-rate pension plus additional State pension remains in operation.

What you get depends on the number of years of National Insurance contributions you have paid. You may be eligible to buy missing years to boost the total. Or you may qualify for NI credits if you were unable to pay contributions e.g. whilst raising a family or as a carer.

Even if you have other entitlements, or an occupational or personal pension you may still qualify for Pension Credit to top up the total. For an estimate of what you are entitled to contact:

…Attendance Allowance could be the answer…

WHAT IS IT? Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust in partnership with Northumberland County Council want to make sure people are aware of all the support they are entitled to. Attendance Allowance is financial help for people who have extra costs because of their long term health problems or disability.

You don’t need to be receiving any help from social services, it isn’t taxable, it isn’t taken off other benefits, and it doesn’t matter how much your pension or savings are. It is paid at one of two weekly rates, £85.60 or £57.30 (from April 2018), and is based on the help a person needs rather than their condition.

WHAT CAN I SPEND IT ON? It’s entirely up to you. Some people use it to help with heating costs or to pay someone to help them at home. Others buy equipment to help them manage everyday tasks or to pay for trips to visit friends or to go to the shops.

DOORSTEP TRADERS

Don’t respond to letters, phone calls or e-mails offering prize draws, holidays, computer repairs, horoscopes or investments. If you are asked to phone a number to claim a prize—don’t ring, it’s usually a premium rate number and the prize is rubbish.

They deal in household repairs, hardware products and quite often in fish. Do not buy at the door. Buy goods and services from local, reputable businesses who offer better products at better prices and are contactable if there is a problem later.

Watch out for subscription traps where you are offered a free sample of something but the sender asks for credit card details before they will send it. They will subsequently send you more products but will charge you every time.

Put the phone down on anyone offering insurance, PPI rebates or council tax regradings and never give your bank or credit card details over the phone.Don’t discuss anything private—just ring off, you’re not being rude.
