The

GOLDENguide North East daily living guide for over 50s

www.goldenguide.org.uk Hello and welcome to the latest Golden Guide for Northumberland. It’s been a busy year discovering more activities and groups around the county. The word is out that it’s fun—and also healthy to get involved!

Daljit Lally Deputy Chief Executive of Northumberland County Council and Executive Director of Community Services at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust David Ferguson Acting Chief Executive Age UK Northumberland Infrastructure North

It seems more men than ever enjoy using their skills and learning new ones in the various Men’s Shed projects—not forgetting the new Women’s Workshop in Amble. More gardening, music and writing clubs are around and walking has become especially popular for getting out and about, keeping fit and socialising at the same time. There’s a growing interest in community matters too. The Golden Age Forum in Ashington discusses local plans, as well as running lively social events through the year. (More forums on pages 7 and 70) It’s always a priority to give as much health and care information as we can, so we are delighted to welcome new partners Infrastructure North. They offer help to older and vulnerable people at home through their support schemes. (See page 47 - 49). It’s also good to find more events for those with memory problems - coffee mornings, walks, singing and trips out are just some of the activities on offer. This year our special feature is The Moneymaker Issue—a lighthearted look at boosting your income. If it doesn’t inspire you to make money, maybe it will still make you smile! As always, please have a look at our sponsors’ ad pages—they are always packed with extra useful information. If you have feedback or comments, do get in touch at the address overleaf or through the website at www.goldenguide.org.uk Heather Alabaster Editor

BOGUS CALLERS 101 Northumbria Police Crime Prevention Advisers Advice on making your home secure through locks, lights, alarms and sensible precautions.

COLD CALLERS Never respond to unexpected callers offering building work, repairs or goods such as hardware products or fish. It’s likely the price will be much too high, or there will be a problem once they’ve left. Do not allow a caller into your home—ask them to call another time and have someone with you as even identification can be faked. See also page 108 Trading Standards advice.

SCAMS Put the phone down on anyone offering insurance, PPI rebates or council tax regradings and never give your bank or credit card details over the phone. Don’t discuss anything private—just ring off, you’re not being rude it’s a scam. Don’t respond to letters or calls offering prize draws, holidays or investments. If you are asked to phone a number to claim a prize— don’t ring, it’s usually a premium rate number and the prize is worthless.

See also page 93 for personal alarm systems.

ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR & DISABILITY HATE CRIME 101 Northumbria Police www.northumbria.police.uk Residents are encouraged to report any kind of anti social behaviour. But you should still ring 999 when there is immediate danger or you witness a crime taking place. 101 Disability Hate Crime This is any crime motivated by the victim’s disability. A Golden Guide publication

The

2017 MONEYMAKER Issue

Welcome to our MoneyMaker supplement, especially created for this year’s Golden Guide.

There are widely differing views about money. Jane Austen thought ‘a large income is the best recipe for happiness I ever heard of’ but for St Paul the love of money was ‘the root of all kinds of evil’. Socrates states serenely that ‘‘He is richest who is content with the least, for content is the wealth of nature.’ For most of us having enough money means we can do the extra things we want to, and also achieve a sense of financial security in going about our daily life. As we reach retirement it’s likely that income will drop, and though we might aspire to live like Socrates, it’s a sensible idea to take some steps towards achieving the best income we can. So here are a few suggestions, some lighthearted, some more serious, on boosting your income, either by making money in ingenious ways, or by saving it. See what you think and let us know! Love Heather Editor 0191 386 5918 heather@goldenguide.org.uk Twitter.com/@goldenguidene www.goldenguide.org.uk NB There are many references to online searching and websites in this issue—if you’d like to learn how to use the internet, or get help tracking down information online—there are various ways to do this. Start with a visit to your library branch and see pages 32 - 33 in the Golden Guide.

GROWING YOUR CASH

In collaboration with Rachel Connor of Stepchange Debt Charity

RECLAIM LOST ASSETS Millions in unclaimed assets are in forgotten bank accounts, pensions, premium bonds, life insurance and investments. Most are easy to reclaim on your own behalf or for a deceased relative and it’s free—you don’t need to pay a company to do it for you. Visit www.mylostaccount.org.uk for bank and building society accounts, National Savings and Investments and Post Office accounts. Go to www.gov.uk/find-pension-contact-details for pensions. Also see an informative guide at www. moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/reclaim-lostassets-free

DONATE OLD CLOTHES FOR CASH H&M stores run a scheme offering you a £5 voucher to spend in store for each bag of old clothes/fabric items you donate. You can take bags as often as you like though they only give one voucher per transaction. Quality isn’t important as items are for recycling not resale. No shoes.

MAKE YOUR HOME A FILM LOCATION A great way to make extra cash. Film production funding in the UK is tight and scouts are always on the lookout for locations - often the more ‘normal’ the setting the better. Your house might be just what they’re looking for. My House Your Shoot is an online locations library where you can upload your property to their site www.myyour.co Potential clients contact homeowners directly so there’s no middle man and no booking or commission fees for bookings made through the site. NB If you rent your property contact your landlord or housing provider for permission before signing up.

SEND A LETTER TO A MAGAZINE Many magazines, such as Take a Break and Chat, love to hear from their readers, because readers like to read about other readers. Sharing your opinions, ideas, recipes and tips could net you a quick £25. If you send an interesting personal story you can earn considerably more. See www.moneymagpie.com for all the knowhow or contact the magazines direct.

SELL YOUR HOLIDAY SNAPS You don’t have to be a camera wizard to take photos worth paying for. If you have some digital snaps with decent resolution, consider selling them to online agencies such as www.fotolia.com and www.123rf.com Every time someone buys one of your pictures you’ll get a royalty fee, and the subject matter can cover anything you want (within reason).

COUNT THE VOTES AT POLLING TIME Election time means staff are taken on for polling stations, postal vote opening, counting and as electoral canvassers. Payment varies and may depend on how long the count is likely to last. Contact Northumberland Council’s election services department for details on 0345 600 6400 or email elections@northumberland.gov.uk

BECOME A LIFE MODEL

‘Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pound ought and six, result misery.’ Charles Dickens

You don’t need to have the body of an Adonis to become a work of art. Life drawing classes require models of all shapes and sizes and may pay around £35 for a couple of hours work. Contact Newcastle Arts Centre on 0191 261 5618, or email admin@newcastle-arts-centre.co.uk Or visit the North Of England Art Club website at www.northofenglandartclub. co.uk

MONITOR EXAMS Come exam season schools and colleges need invigilators on a flexible basis and pay for the hours worked. Whilst they prefer experience of working in a school this is not essential and training is given. However they do require enhanced criminal record checks. Look for these jobs on individual school websites, or at www.northeastjobs.org.uk or www.jobsinschoolsnortheast.com

They pay people for writing engaging, well thought out travel guides for the discerning explorer. SEND IN YOUR FUNNY HOME VIDEOS

‘If plan A fails, remember there are 25 more letters.’ Chris Guillebeau

In this age of YouTube, where hours of funny moments are uploaded onto the web, you’d think that ‘You’ve Been Framed’ would be a thing of the past. Think again! The show still offers its classic reward of £250 for any of your funny clips that it uses. Not a bad price to have your embarrassing moments broadcast across the nation. Find out how to do it at www.itv.com/youvebeenframed

FLOG YOUR NUMBER PLATE It costs nothing to find out if your number plate is worth a couple of bob. A word, initials and clever numeric puns are all in demand. All you need do is log on to www.carreg.co.uk for a free valuation. You can also flog it on eBay, www.regtransfers.co.uk, www.newreg.co.uk, or ring National Numbers on 01642 363738.

CASH FOR CARTRIDGES Any old ink cartridges lying around? Not all brands are eligible, but if they are you can sell them for cash and they will be recycled. For details visit www.therecyclingfactory.com or www.cashforcartridges.co.uk

PRUNING YOUR SPEND MANAGE YOUR BUDGET Being good with money means knowing exactly what you’re spending it on. Work out your costs over the year and keep an eye on them. Allow enough for expenses like holidays or Christmas and treats now and then. Save at least a little every month for emergencies.

DON’T BE A SECRET SPENDER Be aware of over-spending without thinking, e.g. supermarket 2 for 1 deals are only a deal if you were going to buy the item in the first place. To avoid temptation make a list and stick to it, use cash - only take enough for what you need, and don’t shop for groceries when you’re hungry!

ARE YOU MISSING OUT? Millions goes unclaimed in benefits every year. Attendance Allowance in particular is frequently misunderstood, but if you have extra costs because of long term illness or disability then you may be eligible. You don’t have to spend it on care, it doesn’t matter what your income is and it’s tax free. To check on this and other benefits such as Pension Credit visit your local CAB or contact Age UK Northumberland on 01670 784821. See pages 100 - 101 in the Golden Guide.

REMEMBER TO BOOK EARLY

A man who both spends and saves money is the happiest man, because he has both enjoyments. Samuel Johnson 62

Planes, trains and buses all have a quota of seats they will sell for the lowest price and then prices increase over a matter of weeks or sometimes days, so get booked in as early as possible.

MOBILE PHONE TARIFFS The phone networks compete fiercely for your business so give them a ring and see if you can get a cheaper deal. If you already have a decent phone handset, SIM-only tariffs are excellent value for money.

See more at www.goldenguide.org.uk

The MoneyMaker Issue

CHECK YOUR INSURANCE QUOTE

SHOP ONLINE AND USE VOUCHER CODES

As with phone tariffs, shop around for insurance too. Whether it’s for your car or household contents, don’t be afraid to ask— they are used to competing to offer the best rates. Stand by the well known saying ‘shy bairns get nowt’.

Online comparison sites can show you the best price for a product, voucher codes can cut the cost even more. Find vouchers on sites such as www.vouchercodes.co.uk, www. groupon.co.uk or www.moneysupermarket. com/vouchers Sometimes you can print them out and take them to the shop itself. Also look for free delivery vouchers—these can be worth more than money off the product itself.

GROW YOUR OWN FOOD Growing your own fruit and veg reduces your food spend, is very rewarding and a great way to keep fit too. Seeds are inexpensive and instead of buying new pots – re-use old colanders, teapots, buckets or sinks. Great compost can be made from vegetable leftovers, grass cuttings and autumn leaves. If you have no garden – try growing on windowsills, balcony or just in the kitchen. You can even make money by selling on extra plants. See pages 15 - 17 in the Golden Guide.

CUT YOUR HEATING COSTS Switch energy suppliers, the Energy Helpline advise on this and can even do it for you ring 0300 123 1234. You can also hang thermal curtains, stick radiator foil behind radiators to maximise heat output, fit draught excluder round your windows and doors. See pages 47 - 50 in the Golden Guide for energy advice, grants and the Oil Can energy bulk buying scheme in Northumberland.

WORK THE WEB SAFELY There are countless online sites offering money-saving information. Good ones should be up to date and offer plenty of hints and tips - try www.moneysavingexpert.com, www. moneyaware.co.uk and www.moneymagpie. com But whatever you’re looking for there may be scam sites offering products, advice and fraudulent deals. So before you start surfing read this excellent guide to spotting fakes at www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/ advice/how-to-spot-a-fake-fraudulent-orscam-website And remember if an offer seems to good to be true—it usually is!

Enough is better than too much. French Proverb

Finding Out About Care

Care home or YOUR home? You do have a choice... We are Europe’s largest live-in care provider. Our expert care workers live in your home with you, 24-7 as a companion, a carer and a friend. Get the care you need, want and deserve, in the comfort of your own home. We offer a genuine alternative to residential care homes. Our mission is to give elderly and vulnerable people the opportunity to remain safely in their own homes by providing 24 hour, live-in care. Each carer is matched to you based on personality, hobbies and interests as well as overall care needs. This means there’s some common ground from day one and genuine friendships blossom. Maybe you’re cared for by a family member who just needs a break, or you need help getting back on your feet after a hospital stay. Perhaps you simply require a companion to help with day-to-day tasks such as cooking, cleaning and shopping. Our packages cover all this and range

from short term solutions through to ongoing support. We also offer complex care packages for those with more advanced care needs such as Dementia, stroke, Parkinson’s and palliative end-of-life care. Because our care packages are tailored to meet your individual needs, we ensure you retain as much independence and dignity as possible. The standard of care and attention to detail making sure Mum was well cared for and had all she needed was excellent. RESIDENTIAL & NURSING CARE

The local authority and housing associations provide a variety of bungalows and flats to rent or to purchase through shared ownership. Usually with an alarm system and communal facilities e.g. laundry, lounge, and sometimes with warden support. There are also private companies that offer apartments for sale in schemes with a variety of additional facilities.

Care homes provide care, accommodation and board for people who need a high level of support. They are required by law to be registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

05 MONEY MATTERS If you are close to retiring or have already retired, you will be keeping an eye on your financial position. Careful planning and the right advice will help you achieve the best income you can. Use our suggestions here to find contacts for specialist advice and information.

HELP WITH PENSIONS State Pension age is currently 65 for men and for women it increases gradually to 65 between April 2016 and November 2018. In April 2016 the Single Tier State Pension came into effect. The Additional State Pension has been removed but the flat-rate is higher. It only applies to those who reached state pension age on or after 6 April 2016. For people older than this the system of basic flat-rate pension plus Additional State pension remains in operation.

What you get depends on the number of years of National Insurance contributions you have paid. You may be eligible to buy missing years to boost the total. Or you may qualify for NI credits if you were unable to pay contributions e.g. whilst raising a family or as a carer. Even if you have other entitlements, or an occupational or personal pension you may still qualify for Pension Credit to top up the total. See overleaf for how to get an estimate of what you are entitled to contact:

OVER 65? SUFFERING FROM AN ILLNESS OR DISABILITY AND STRUGGLING TO MANAGE AT HOME? 2016

North East daily living guide for over 50s

There are many people who need help to live safely in their own home or to get out but cannot afford to pay for it.

…Attendance Allowance could be the answer… WHAT IS IT? Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust in partnership with Northumberland County Council want to make sure residents are aware of the support they are entitled to. Attendance Allowance is financial help for people who have extra costs because of their long term health problems or disability. You don’t need to be receiving any help from social services, it isn’t taken off other benefits, and it doesn’t matter how much your pension or savings are. It is paid at one of two weekly rates, £55.65 or £83.10 (from April 2017), and is based on the help a person needs rather than their condition. WHAT CAN I SPEND IT ON? It’s entirely up to you. Some people use it to help with heating costs or to pay someone to help them at home. Others buy equipment to help them manage everyday tasks or to pay for trips to visit friends or to go to the shops.

NORTHUMBERLAND TRADING STANDARDS SERVICE What to watch out for in Northumberland SCAMS

CARAVAN PARKS

Don’t respond to letters, phone calls or e-mails offering prize draws, holidays, computer repairs, horoscopes or investments. If you are asked to phone a number to claim a prize—don’t ring, it’s usually a premium rate number and the prize is rubbish.

If you’re thinking of buying a residential caravan make sure you:

Put the phone down on anyone offering insurance, PPI rebates or council tax regradings and never give your bank or credit card details over the phone. Don’t discuss anything private—just ring off, you’re not being rude.

DOORSTEP TRADERS They deal in household repairs, hardware products and quite often in fish. Do not buy at the door. Buy goods and services from local, reputable businesses who offer better products at better prices and are contactable if there is a problem later.

108

• Check the site owners belong to the British Holiday and Home Parks Association (BHHPA). • Check the contract for service and site maintenance charges. • Make very sure of pitch fees, how increases are calculated and if the contract must be renewed annually. • Check the rates of commission and disconnection fees for when you want to sell your caravan. • Check the site’s safety features are up to date and talk to other residents about their experience there.

For problems with goods or services bought at the door, or with your caravan contract, call the Citizens Advice Consumer Advice Service, 03454 04 05 06
