ISSUE THREE 2019 JOHN RENELL

Chairman, Ellerslie Business Association

We have all enjoyed the warmest July since records began. The mild weather has hastened our winter and the beginning of spring is only weeks away. The annual Ellerslie Fairy Festival and Pirate Party will be held on 8th September. This is an excellent opportunity to showcase our village encouraging people from all over Auckland to discover what our wonderful village has to offer. Magical September will again feature amazing events for the younger members of our community, Fairy Door Trail, Pirate Treasure Hunt, Colouring Competitions etc. I encourage you all to check the Ellerslie Business Association website for the latest activities and information www.ellerslievillage.co.nz

I recently enjoyed a wonderful night’s entertainment at the Pop Up Globe Theatre at the Ellerslie Racecourse. The venue and cast bring Shakespeare to life in a modern way. I recommend you plan a visit with friends for a very memorable evening or matinee.

with 5326 pie entries from 553 bakers this is a huge achievement by our local retailers.

It is pleasing to note no empty retail sites in Ellerslie Village which is indicative of the support our community extends to the assortment of retail and service businesses. This also reflects on the success of the Ellerslie Business Association and their staff who strive to maximise exposure to our village.

It is with regret we farewell Desley Simpson from representing Ellerslie, as well as Kit Parkinson and Rosalind Rundle who are not seeking reelection. We will miss their loyal, enthusiastic, knowledgeable support for Ellerslie. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Desley, Kit and Rosalind. I wish them all the very best for the future. I take this opportunity to encourage you all to remember to have your say and vote in the upcoming Local Board and Council Elections.

Congratulations to Jason and team at Richoux Patisserie and the owners of Julia’s Bakery for achieving awards at the latest Bakels NZ Pie Awards,

It is just over three months until Christmas. Start your shopping early to avoid stress and please support your local vibrant retailers.

SPRING I’m writing this on one of the most wintery days we have had this year, with hail and cold winds bearing down at the door. We also had rain arrive during the opening night of our Elemental Festival event, Ellerslie Winter Nights on the 12th of July. Despite the downpour we had a great turnout to view the beautiful light installations from local artist Andy Flint. Thank you to Auckland Vehicles who brought the BBQ along and handed out over 300 delicious sausages provided by Ellerslie Meats and to the Ellerslie Community Patrol for assisting us. We hope those of you who were able to join us had a great time, despite the weather. September is one of the busiest months for us with Magical September including the Ellerslie Fairy Festival and Pirate Party on Sunday 8th September. We have a month of fantastic events planned to bring joy to little people (and adults!) in Ellerslie. Where else in Auckland can you track down hidden Lego pirates or have your photo taken with a Unicorn? Details on these and other magical events running throughout the month can be found at www.ellerslievillage. co.nz If you are intending to join us on the

8th September for the Fairy Festival and Pirate party there will be road closures in place and we encourage walking and the use of public transport. If you wish to drive we suggest parking in the vicinity of Kalmia street and walking across either of the two pedestrian entrances. You may have noticed election hoardings going up around Auckland, which for many of us are the first sign an election is coming up. This years Council and Local Body elections might be a bit confusing for those of us in Ellerslie, as from 12th October new boundary rules come into force. This means many of us will be in one electorate for voting for our Councillor and a separate electorate for voting for local board members. In order to make some sense of this we have included in this issue an article explaining what you need to know and how to find out more. See page 12 for more information. We hope to see you in Ellerslie soon, making the most of all our wonderful village has to offer (including perhaps a cheeky award winning pie!) Megan

Local things we love We’ve been on the look out in the Village and found some real goodies...

Coffee A cool winter day is always a good excuse for a warm coffee or hot chocolate – for extra cuteness we love the amazing creations from Ellerslie Coffee Club.

Want to share something you love? Let us know at hello@ellerslievillage.co.nz

Daphne Flowers of Ellerslie You may recognise the gorgeous Daphne from Flowers of Ellerslie, turns out her fabulous wardrobe is courtesy of several lovely Ellerslie locals including Anne, Dianna from Caci, Samantha from Flight Centre and Animates whose office is on Robert Street. How we love Ellerslie community kindness keeping Daphne warm on these cold winter days.

A huge congratulations to both Richoux Patissere and Julias Bakery for taking out multiple prizes in the recent Bakels Pie Awards, we love their delicious flaky pastry – sooo good!

Have you spotted our Lego heads near the pedestrian bridge yet? With a changing assortment of characters – we hope they bring a smile to your day.

DENISE LEE

Member of Parliament deniseleemp@parliament.govt.nz First and foremost, I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who came and supported our community at my Ellerslie Clean-Up. I thoroughly enjoyed hosting this event with the Ellerslie Business Association and receiving support from Bakers Delight, Four Square, and Ellerslie Supermarket. The genuine excitement from 70 community members to do their bit for Ellerslie was special. We collected at least 20 bags of rubbish, an arm chair, and more! While it may seem like we’re doing something small, picking up little wayward rubbish will reap big results. Plus, it’s a great way to connect with each other and help our environment at the same time. During my time as MP, I’ve hosted 7 community clean-ups, two of which have been in Ellerslie- they get bigger each time! I’m very happy to do my bit to spruce up our local landscape and hope many others feel the same. We’re part of a very vibrant Village that I take huge pride in. Showing our area a little love is a no-brainer. It’s also wonderful seeing our other community eco-projects flourish including the Community Garden behind the Memorial Hall, the Ellerslie Community Fruit and Vegetable stands

on Tecoma Street and Innesfree Drive, and the Ellerslie Song Bird Project. These initiatives are testament to the hard work and dedication of our local residents and businesses- thank you. In addition to cleaner streets and dumped rubbish, other issues raised with my office that relate to Auckland Council include transport and building consents. Over the past 18 months, I’ve worked hard to resolve such issues, but it’s clear that there are several roadblocks and inefficiencies that make dealing with Council so frustrating for you. I want to help. I recently launched the Rate Your Council website where you can go online and submit on what you think is or isn’t working, and what should change at Auckland Council to make it more efficient and accountable. What can central government do to

Denise Lee

make your day-to-day interactions with Auckland Council easier? Visit www.rateyourcouncil.nz and share your stories with me. It covers a number of areas, including public engagement, transport issues, building consents and the effectiveness of CCO’s. Last, but certainly not the least, I would like to congratulate Jessica McKnight from One Tree Hill College for her strong performance in representing the Maungakiekie electorate down in Wellington for the Youth MP Parliament. Her speech on mental health was a standout, and if this year’s youth talent is anything to go by, we can be confident in our next generation. As always, if there is anything my office can help with, please do not hesitate to phone 0800 DENISEMP or email deniseleemp@parliament.govt.nz.

DESLEY SIMPSON Councillor, Ōrākei board

Councillor DESLEY SIMPSON says THANK YOU for your support It’s been a pleasure to work with you to achieve much for Ellerslie including upgrades to the Michaels Ave Reserve, new art for the village, upgrading Ellerslie splash pad fountain, new mosaic murals, an Anzac memorial, successful Santa parades, Fairy festivals, town centre clean ups, tennis court upgrades, community hall upgrades and attending many plays as patron of Ellerslie Theatre. Boundary changes will now see Ellerslie no longer represented by an Ōrākei Ward Councillor but by a Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Councillor and I know they will enjoy working with the Ellerslie community.

KIT PARKINSON

Chairman, Ōrākei Local board

And in the last 18 months, there has been numerous highlights. It’s important to us that your local facilities are safe, accessible and are maintained to an appropriate standard. So we’ve given support to local infrastructure installing a swing gate at Ellerslie Domain which worked to stop late night partying at the reserve and we’ve undertaken upgrades at Leicester Hall and the Ellerslie Recreation Centre in Michaels Avenue Reserve.

I’m really proud to have served Ellerslie in my role as chair of the Ōrākei Local Board since May 2018 and as a member of the local board since 2010. Our local board has recently published our Progress and Achievements Report 1 January 2018 - 30 June 2019. Reading over our report reminds me of the significant work we’ve carried out in Ellerslie over the last 18 months and as far back as 2010. You can read our achievements report at our webpage: www.aucklandcouncil.govt. nz/orakei Over the years we’ve supported town centre and public toilet upgrades and public art including the Ellerslie Town Centre Tile Mosaic and the Anzac Verse and Poppy Mural at the Ellerslie War Memorial Community Centre.

Our upgrades at the recreation centre continue including renewing the ground floor changing rooms and replacing the air conditioning system in the fitness area. We’ve funded a safe access route into Michaels Avenue Reserve from Elwood Place. The new pathway links to existing paths and provides a direct route for pedestrians through to Michaels Avenue. A significant upgrade of the Findlay Street / Hewson Street walkway that connects to the Ellerslie train station via the underpass is underway. Improvements will include relocating the path away from existing vegetation to provide a three-metre shared path and new lighting to improve safety along the walkway, especially at night. Protecting and enhancing our local ecology is another key passion. We’re very proud to be able to support local community environment groups through funding and resources.

ELLERSLIE GOOD SORTS

This issue we are delighted to award Nick Liu and his team at Ellerslie Four Square with the Good Sorts award. If there is a community event on in Ellerslie they are always ready to help out with anything that is needed. They have donated hundreds of dollars of product to our community events including Ellerslie Rejects Hate, Community Clean up days and numerous other events – without donations like these we simply couldn’t run them. The Four Square team also assist with numerous other projects

and helping those in our community that need an extra hand, from delivering groceries to the homes of those who are unable to come in store, to donating food to those in need. Recently AON Hewitt also named Four Square among the best employers in Australia and New Zealand. The Four Square motto is “big enough to compete, small enough to care” we think this exactly embodies how Nick and his team contribute to our community.

This means the areas for local board boundaries are now different to the boundaries for voting for your councillor. For the majority of us in Ellerslie this means we are now part of Maugakiekie for voting for our Councillor and the local board arrangement of being part of the Ōrākei Local Board area remains unchanged.

Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Ward

UPCOMING ELECTIONS AND COUNCILLOR CANDIDATES and Grafton are now in the Ōrākei ward. So that the Ōrākei ward remains compliant with the 10% rule, parts of the Ōrākei ward have transferred to the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki ward and a small part of the MaungakiekieTāmaki ward has transferred to the AlbertEden-Puketāpapa ward. Unfortunately these changes mean that these ward boundaries are no longer perfectly aligned with the local board boundaries. Nevertheless the changes were need to ensure a fair spread of representation.

As election hoardings have gone up around Ellerslie you may have noticed some say Ōrākei and some Maungakiekie Tāmaki. This is because representation arrangements have changed for many of us in the Ellerslie area due to changes made when Auckland Council conducted its first review last year, under the provisions set out in the the Local Electoral Act 2001 (LEA).

Nominations for candidates closed on the 16 August, and are listed below. We contacted those standing for Councillor for Maungakiekie Tāmaki to submit candidate profiles, those who replied by the deadline are profiled here.

MAUNGAKIEKIE-TĀMAKI WARD Carmel Claridge Better Auckland Josephine Bartley Labour Party Josh Beddell Communities and Residents Patrick O’Meara United Locals

PATRICK O’MEARA

CARMEL CLARIDGE

JOSH BEDDELL

The O’Meara family have lived in Maungakiekie for five generations and have a long standing connection with the local community.

Community is at the heart of what I do. My focus has always been on policies for progress - instead of party politics. I am proud to be standing as an independent for Ward Councillor - Maungakiekie Tāmaki and Member - Ōrākei Local Board. I am current Deputy Chair of the Ōrākei Local Board.

C&R Councillor Desley Simpson has represented Ellerslie greatly. I’m looking forward to continuing her work and serving you as your strong voice. Like you, I believe Ellerslie is a special place to live. My family moved to Glen Innes in the 1950s, was born on Konini Road, attended One Tree Hill College and have lived in the area with my family for over 15 years.

I went to school locally as did my two children with my eldest now at University. My late Father was a local Roading Contractor who did work for the Local Borough Councils, back in the day. I worked for my Father during school holidays, then when I left school and then even when it became Tāmaki City Council. I then went on to work for Fulton Hogan. During all of this time I grew up on the water, boating, sailing, on the Tāmaki Estuary, cruising the Hauraki Gulf and the Waitemata Harbour, which is still my on-going passion. This took me into becoming a boatbuilder (Qualified) now working in the Marine Industry for Local and International Clients. Growing up in Panmure, has shown and taught me the loss of History here. I am trying to remind people that once our history is gone, it is lost forever, and this is why I took on the role of President for the Panmure Historical Society for the past 3 years. Working with a voluntary Groups of like minded people that want to save the History of Panmure and the surrounding districts Saving the Panmure Wharf was a priority to me last year, as was keeping the Historic Stone Cottage open to the public. I am a Stakeholder with Panuku working on Unlock Panmure- to protect our local Assets. I have been the Chair for a local Environmental Group, that helps protect the waterway, & wildlife of the Tāmaki Estuary which includes representing to the Hauraki Gulf Forum and the Manukau Harbour Forum. I have been nominated to stand as Councillor, by our local community for a United Local Voice.

ELIMINATE WASTEFUL SPENDING I am a founding member and former media spokesperson for the Auckland Ratepayers’ Alliance, an organization dedicated to ensuring fiscal prudence and elimination of wasteful Council spending. In my very first week in office on the Ōrākei Local Board I ensured that the legacy internal Board catering costing over $35’000 was discontinued. Savings can, and should, be made within Council’s current operation. PROTECTION AND ENHANCEMENT OF THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT You’ll find me in gumboots most weekends involved in beach clean ups, bush restoration, and community plantings. I hold governance positions in the ecological space as Chair of Friends of Pourewa Valley and Co-Chair of the Tāmaki Estuary Environment Forum. I am committed to ensuring our waterways, and green spaces are treated as taonga and that our beaches are swimmable 365 days of the year. TRANSPORT Solutions to transport issues must be driven by community – not top down ideology from within Auckland Transport. Over the past three years as Transport Lead on the Ōrākei Local Board I have delivered transport projects that make a real difference to residents’ everyday lives. I have forged a reputation as . strong, articulate and forceful advocate on behalf of the people I serve. I will ensure your voice is heard loud and clear throughout Council’s processes, particularly with AT. I am a lawyer and former small business owner. Living locally for 35 years, including a happy stint in a little stone cottage on Ellerslie’s Main Highway, I have three adult children and one granddaughter. I live with my partner Bruce and a menagerie of rescue creatures in St Johns. Vote for a Better Auckland. Vote Carmel Claridge

I’m local and experienced. However, we can’t afford 3 more years of this Council. We deserve better. It’s time Council gets on with the things that matter most – safe neighbourhoods, clean streets, family-friendly parks, core council services and reliable public transport. We need common-sense, careful spending and disciplined decision-making at Council. With hard work and more scrutiny, I’ll deliver this for you and focus on: - Cutting wasteful spending and prioritising core council services - Crime prevention and making our neighbourhood a safer place to live - Fixing the Robert Street/Main Highway intersection - Safety improvements for the Ellerslie Village pedestrian crossing - Moving the Ladies Mile cycle way to an alternative location where it’s not a safety hazard We must take back control of Auckland Transport, tackle congestion, get Auckland moving and invest heavily in quality infrastructure. I offer more than a decade of experience in project management, community engagement, and advocating for local residents. I’m also prepared to kick up a fuss if the bureaucracy makes poor decisions. You deserve a Councillor who’ll stand up for you and take your views to the council table. That’s why I’m asking for your vote. Please don’t hesitate to contact me on 021 202 0512 or at josh.beddell@gmail.com. I’ll be your strong voice for Ellerslie and will fight for you and our community every day. Please vote for all your C&R Ōrākei Local Board team.

Profiles of all candidates will be available from 26 August 2019 see www.voteauckland.co.nz for more information.

Recently we hosted our most recent workshop - Fizzing over Fermentation at Leicster Hall. We had a fantastic evening learning about Kombucha, Sauerkraut and Kimchi and everyone left with a smile on their face and their own jar of Sauerkraut (and a lingering smell of cabbage in the hall!) Huge thanks to our wonderful sponsors Glengarry Ellerslie and Ellerslie local Jon, owner of Perfit Seals and Jars for their generous donations to our event. Our next workshop will be Herb your Enthusiam – making herb planter boxes. Lynn, of Community garden fame, will be showing us how to make a small herb planter and sharing her tips for gardening success. Come along, meet some friendly locals and leave with your own planter box. Monday 23rd September, 7.30pm at the Ellerslie War Memorial Hall. Tickets available from Eventbrite. Our latest local initiative looks to restore and regenerate the natural landscape of Ellerslie, creating a safe place for birds, lizards and insects to thrive. The Ellerslie Birdsong Project was started by Troy Elliott, Madeline Banda, Megan Darrow, Bronwyn Abbott and Stacey Balich along with the financial support from the Ellerslie Residents Association and the Ellerslie Business Association. Since our launch we were have been successful in getting a grant from ĹŒrÄ kei Local Board that will finance more traps for us. The success of the project will require local residents to put traps in their gardens and report back on what they have caught so results can be monitored. Following the best practices that have been recommended by Predator Free New Zealand 2050, the project wants to work collaboratively with the Ellerslie community, looking to monitor appropriately to ensure effectiveness and focus on taking action. How does trapping rats in our garden help our environment? Pre humans, New Zealand, as many countries, was the land of birds. These native birds were safe from

16

predation by mammals because there was only one, the bat. Our birds have not evolved as fast as the growth in population of humans and introduced mammals have. New Zealand remains home to over 150 species of native birds and many of them are not found anywhere else in the world, they are endemic (Ministry of Environment, 2007). Four out of every five birds are at risk and some on the brink of extinction. (Ministry of Environment, 2018)

There are many community projects that are working hard to save our natural heritage. The Government has set a target of 2050 to be predator free, which involves getting rid of possums, rats and stoats. Pest management will not only support our native bird populations it will also maintain our forest diversity, water quality, natural assets and ecosystems as well as enhancing our lives through nature. Birds need a suitable and safe place, food

The success of the project will require local residents to put traps in their gardens and report back on what they have caught so results can be monitored. and somewhere to nest to thrive. Restoring abundant, resilient and diverse birdlife will involve bringing birds back to the cities. It would be great to have resilient and diverse birdlife in Ellerslie. With support and innovation it is possible to turn this around nationally. Over recent decades New Zealand has had some great success in conservation. However there is more that we can do in our gardens at home to help because our natural heritage is not just confined to the

reserves and more rural areas. There is more to protecting our natural heritage than saving birds, but if we can restore bird populations our ecosystems as a whole will benefit. Rats are killed in a variety of ways that involve either trapping or poisoning. For this project we are trapping because it is a more humane way to kill, although it is more resource intensive. We are offering to provide the traps. These traps have been made by the Mens Shed Auckland East.

WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW? • I f you are unsure if you have rats in your garden you could put out chew cards that can be brought from any DIY store to see if you have rats, mice, possums and stoats in your garden. •R ats seek sources of food and water. Make sure food scraps are in the bin and not left lying around and secure your compost bins. •K eep your garden tidy by removing

piles of wood and garden waste, pick up fallen fruit and cut back overgrown areas. • If you are landscaping in your garden think about planting native plants. Planting native trees is important as it provides food and homes for the birds. • Take a good look at your garden and see what is growing. The fatal four are climbing asparagus, moth plant, wild ginder and tradescantia.

• I f you are a cat owner add a bell to your cat’s collar to give the native birds a chance to stop silent hunting. Feed them well with a balanced diet, entertain them with toys to prevent them using real wildlife as toys and bring them in at bed time. • I f you want a trap please email us. When you collect the trap you will also be given a handout with information for how to use the trap, the bait to use and where to place it.

ELLERSLIE RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION Ellerslie has undertaken some dramatic demographic changes over the last 20-30 years. I lived in Celtic Crescent and Ladies Mile when I was a student and in those days there was not as much infill housing , we also had a lot of retired people that lived in the houses that they brought their families up in. Many of those retired people have now moved into local retirement villages that are a valuable addition to our community and they have been replaced with young families. Over time we have also had a lot more infill housing and apartments built. Whilst this is great for the beating heart of our community, it adds a lot of infrastructure problems and concerns. The most communication that the Ellerslie Residents Association (ERA) receives is around transport and parking issues and we work with both the Orakei Local Board (OLB) and Auckland Transport on these. Recently we have focussed on three specific areas of concern that have been brought to us by residents. The first is to begin a consultation about the Robert Street/Main Highway intersection, this area has many accidents and near misses and is constantly brought up as a difficult intersection. The next road that has been raised, and often mentioned on the Ellerslie Community Facebook page, is Ladies Mile. ERA has

proposed to AT that they move the cycle way in Ladies Mile to another area as the road is not wide enough (a number of problems with side mirrors taken off parked cars and crashes and near misses). We also believe this is not a safe place for cyclists and one only has to look at the lack of use to highlight this. The third transport related issue is to work with AT over the safety concerns of the Ellerslie Village pedestrian crossing , one of the proposed improvements is to install a raised crossing as per the crossing outside St Mary’s primary school on Main Highway. ERA has asked AT for the statistics on accidents on this crossing and we have been told that there are no records of any accidents at this location. This is a huge surprise to us given the fact some of us have actually witnessed accidents there. We would love to hear your thoughts on the above transport related issues, please email us and we look forward to championing these for the community. Ellerslie Residents Association works closely with the Ellerslie Business Association and we all strive to ensure Ellerslie continues to be a thriving community to live, work and play in. Mindfulness is pretty simple, really. It’s about being present and in the moment; noticing our thoughts and feelings and having an awareness of what is going on in our body and environment with compassion and non-judgement. This means we’re not obsessing about something that happened in the past, or worrying about the future and we understand that there is no right or wrong way to feel or think.

Anyone can practice mindfulness, including children. It is innately within us all; we just have to learn how to access it. Numerous scientific studies have proven that mindfulness benefits our overall health, decreasing stress and anxiety, increasing cognitive ability and improving our relationships. It can assist workplaces become more productive, improve employee engagement, reduce absenteeism and increase leadership skills through improved self-awareness. Children benefit from mindfulness both at school and home, including being less stressed and anxious during exam time, So you want to start practicing mindfulness, but you’ve got no idea how to begin? The wonderful thing about mindfulness is that you can get started anywhere, any time. Here’s how you can get started: 1. Set aside a certain time every day 2. Sit in a place where you can actually be as free from distractions as possible. 3. Set a timer, even starting with one minute will make a difference! 4. Simply sitting there for one minute, noticing your thoughts and then bringing it back to whatever you’re anchoring your attention on, such as your breath. 5. You may want to just sit and listen

improved learning through better ability to concentrate and being better able to relate to others and make friends. It also makes them more compassionate and increases their empathy. Mindfulness allows us to suspend our judgment, unlocking our natural curiosity about how our mind works and approaching our experiences with a gentle kindness, not just to ourselves but to those around us, also. It’s allows us to cultivate our best selves, enabling us to choose how we respond to situations in a way in line with our values, rather than reacting with our emotions.

Mindfulness is not only beneficial for you, but for anyone that you come in contact with. So remember, do not feel guilty that you’re taking time out for yourself! As you become more accepting, less judgmental, and kinder to yourself, you naturally extend that same courtesy to others. STANHOPE SCHOOL I am privileged to be the new Principal at Stanhope Road School. We are a large multicultural full primary school (Year 1-8) with a roll of approximately 540 students and over 60 nationalities represented. Our learners, whanau, and staff all combine to make us a truly exceptional school. The future opportunities to continue to grow our school in a positive direction are exciting and I have extremely high expectations for our school and our learners to be the best they can possibly be. Term 3 has been another action packed term at Stanhope Road School. Our learners inquiry topic is “If Aotearoa

ST MARY’S CATHOLIC SCHOOL During Term 2, our learners focused their inquiry on Tangata Whenuatanga. The focus question was ‘How can we be kaitiaki/guardians to the place we belong?’ The inquiry began with a full school Immersion Day where the children were given resources such as harakeke (flax), pumpkins and kumara. They had to brainstorm how to carry vegetables and collect water using what they had. There was also a Maori Village set up with a hangi pit and shelter.

After much discussion and many ‘wondering’ questions, all of the classes visited Mangere Mountain for an informative and enjoyable day with the educators based there. Back at school the students busied themselves with research, craft, creating movies and slideshows, all with the goal of using what they had learnt about Maori life in the past. Their work was then showcased in the Celebration of Learning where parents and friends were invited to come along and view the resulting work. There was a variety of learning on show – woven bags from scrap material, kawakawa lip balm, soap and tea, a class weaving reflecting kaitiaki (guardianship of the sky, sea and land), traditional Maori games,

fish hooks and many informative presentations. The St Mary’s children also participated in Arterslie where they loved seeing their work on display. Winter sports are in full swing with netball teams participating during the week and our hockey teams on Saturdays. We are thrilled that our new astroturf has been used for some of these games. Mrs Saira Boyle, St Mary’s principal, left at the end of Term 2 to take up a position at Willowbank School. Mrs Hellene Varoy is the Acting Principal while the hunt is on for a new leader. Life at St Mary’s continues to be learner focussed, fun and busy!

The winter terms at Ellerslie Playgroup are always lots of fun. The kids really enjoy playing in the different activity areas. Block towers take lots of concentration! Pretend play in the kitchen area is always popular, as is the playdough table. We have been doing a lot of painting during craft. The kids did a great job with their paper plate fish. In term 2 we had a visit from Little Ferns. Sarah ran a dinosaur themed session. The kids were fascinated with the dinosaur skeleton and they enjoyed dressing up and exploring the dinosaur related objects. They were even able to make their own fossil using clay and a shark tooth. We finished term 2 with a trip to Bounce and Beyond. Everyone had so much fun jumping and sliding.

Ellerslie Playgroup is a community-run group held on Tuesday and Friday mornings from 9.30-11.30am in Leicester Hall (corner Findlay and Ramsgate Streets). If you would like to try us out check us out on Facebook, email ellerslieplaygroup@gmail.com, or drop in for a visit on a Tuesday or Friday. “All toys are educational!” declared child development expert and presenter at an Ellerslie Toy Library learning session. Wendy Peedre is Child Development and she was at the Library discussing toys and the various development stages which are encouraged through play. The Ellerslie Toy Library is a membership based system, and one of over 200 located throughout the country. “It was an excellent opportunity for us as parents to learn more about toys children benefit the most from during each development stage. Wendy was also kind enough to help guide us on the variety of toys we should be buying for the library shelves and encouraging other families to borrow” explained Library host Philippa Fish. At the presentation evening Wendy focused on 0-5year olds and the toys that suit each development stage. Working with the Toy Library staff Wendy picked an array of the toys to present and discuss. Also looked at the elements of toys to look for if a parent is interested in helping their child improve spatial awareness, walking, sitting, language and activity. For example did you know that

puzzles aren’t just a great way to keep your child entertained, they are an important way to help teach your child the need to complete something, that working towards a goal and creating something new, of the satisfaction of seeing the change (a complete puzzle) happening. Children strive to control their surroundings and by doing so feel safer and more confident which is why puzzles, building blocks and other change element toys are so important. Wendy finished off by praising the toy library for its array and ever changing and increasing stocks, but also took a moment to remind parents that no toy replaces their time and that even a toilet roll can be the greatest and most educational toy if played with together. If you would like to know more about the Ellerslie Toy Library contact them via ellerslietoylibrary@gmail. com or pop in on a Saturday morning behind the St Peters Church, 7 Harrison Road, Ellerslie, between 9am and 11am. Wendy Peedre is of Teeny Tiny which provides support for parents to help them make informed decisions regarding their child’s development.

ELLERSLIE SCHOOL The first 4 weeks of Term 3 have been super busy for the students, staff and whanau of Ellerslie School. Nick Butler, who has become the School’s 22nd Principal since 1877, was warmly welcomed by the students and Board of Trustees at a special assembly. Nick believes much of the success of the school is down to the building and maintaining of strong relationships with all the key stakeholders. He has enjoyed welcoming students and their families at the front gate as they arrive at school each morning, ready for a great day of learning and fun. This has been a really effective way to connect with the school community. Recently the school has conducted 2 afternoons and evenings where the community has visited their children’s learning environments to discuss their progress with the teachers. This provided parents and caregivers with a perfect opportunity to connect with their child(ren)’s learning.

During the second week of Term 3 the Education Review Office visited the school for 4 days to conduct their 3 yearly review. They were impressed by the positive culture of the school and enjoyed meeting staff, students, parents and caregivers. The full ERO report will be available to the community before the end of the term. At the end of Week 4, all Year 4-8 students participated in the annual school cross country held at Shore Rd Reserve. 10 races were staged around the 1km course with students running between 1.5kms and 3.5kms. The Friends of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra were very sad to learn of the sudden death of one of the founding players in the orchestra. John Ure, horn player, dedicated a large part of his life to ensuring Auckland had a truly professional orchestra. Just listen to what has grown from his dedication. A truly world class orchestra! Although so much has been achieved the orchestra still needs its Friends. No orchestra in the world survives on ticket sales alone. Every Friend who pays the annual subscription of $35 contributes at least $35 to our orchestra’s survival. Players need salaries to support their families, concert halls have to be paid for, the rights for some scores are enormously expensive. The Friends meet on a Friday morning at 10.30a.m. in the Ellerslie War Memorial Hall. The entry fee is a mere $15 if you are a member and $20 if you are a visitor. These meetings occur roughly once a month on a Friday but as they depend on the availability of an international musician they are not regular. The advantage of being a member is that you will receive a 6 monthly programme so you will know when to come. There is always music, sometimes from orchestral members, sometimes from talented young players on the threshold of their musical careers. This is followed by a discussion with either the conductor or the soloist from the previous night’s Concert, followed with a light lunch where you may have the opportunity to chat with the artist if he/she is able to stay for lunch and has not had to dash off to catch a plane to the next engagement.

NOVEMBER

ELLERSLIE THEATRE There is nothing quite as still and lifeless as an empty theatre. Somehow the ghosts of past shows seem to hover in the atmosphere waiting to be moved on by the new show.

Our next meeting is September 13. We would love to see you.

A director appears with a play he wishes to bring to life, followed by a group of actors who would like to take part. Parts are read and the players are chosen, and scripts are taken to be studied and learned. There are meetings between director and set designer, spots appear on the stage marking entrances and positions for major furnishings. Costume designers join the conversations. Life is beginning to stir in the quiet theatre. Rehearsals start, lines are learned, costumes are found, modified or completely made, small hand props appear and gradually the theatre breathes again and the atmosphere expands. Then the set builders move in and the empty stage becomes a home, a garden, a train or whatever this particular play requires.

If you would like further information ring Rona 579 7605.

Then the Front of House people appear and start thinking about audience

requirements. No matter how well the play is performed the audience will not enjoy it if it is uncomfortable. There is seating to think about as well as refreshments. Opening night approaches and the theatre feels alive again. Expectancy is in the air. Opening night, the audience has been welcomed with a glass of champagne and are seated, the cast are nervously checking hair, costumes and makeup. The house lights dim, the stage lights come up and the play is born! As you can see there are many things to be done to get a play from page to stage. Some, like lighting and sound are skilled but many are simple, like sewing buttons on or painting the scenery or searching op shops for props, making tea and coffee and sandwiches to sustain the cast during rehearsals. If you would like to be part of the excitement of watching a show grow from an idea to a live performance ring Rona 525 3336 or go to our website www.ellerslietheatre.co.nz Our next season, Enchanted April runs from 7th - 16th November. Angela is an absolute angel! I had issues with a wisdom tooth that flared up occasionally. This time was different, the pain was getting worse and I knew I had to get it sorted. I hadn’t been to the dentist since arriving in NZ 5 years ago. Initially I went to the hospital as they do extractions but it wasn’t simple and they couldn’t touch it, the tooth was too far into the side of my gum and my cheek and to far back, sending me away to find an oral surgeon or dentist Angela, recommended to me by a friend with serious wisdom teeth issues also, explained everything to me in plain English, exactly what was possible and what she could do for me and said that although, complicated, she could definitely help me. She was informative the whole way through and told me exactly what she was doing at every point - initiating a ‘thumbs up’ system where by I would give her the thumbs up if it was ok for her to have another go at the tooth. She administered the anesthetic so well, that I didn’t need her to stop. After predicting around 50 pulls - she did it in 12!! (she’s strong too!) I was so overwhelmed afterwards I cried - with relief and Ana and Angela were so caring with me and reassuring me the whole time. Angela really cares about your overall dental health and not just getting the job done on the day. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience and highly recommend her services. For anyone nervous - don’t hesitate in contacting Angela for advice, you will not be disappointed plus I feel great the day after my extraction. Just a dull ache and a bit tired, but considering the complicated procedure I’m seriously impressed! Thank you Angela - Valerie

One Tree Hill College students are continuing to produce outstanding results. In NCEA, students are on track at all three levels to gain outstanding levels of achievement. This will continue to build upon last year’s excellent NCEA Level 1, 2 and 3 results. In performing arts, the school production of ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’ was outstanding. As always, I would welcome any interested members of our community who wish to take a tour of the College to contact me to arrange an opportunity for me to show you around One Tree Hill College. This continues to be a great time to be involved with One Tree Hill College as we ‘strive for higher things’. We certainly have students with exceptional talent and it is wonderful to see them show such pride in the school. I look forward to the many successes which will occur throughout the remainder of the year. Nick Coughlin - Principal
